We saw a last minute rush with biden, hairs, mr. Trump campaigning there in the last few days. We 63 a reliablely red state. President trump leading 53 to joe bidens 46. Thats just 14 reporting. Again those polls just closed in the last couple of minutes here. We want to take you to end end. Vice president mike pences state. Donald trump leading 64 to 34 with just 7 reporting. This is also where amy coney barrett, new Justice Amy Coney barrett was teaching at notre dame, so this state certainly expected to go if President Trump and mike pences favor. Now joe biden spent his morning at his home state of pennsylvania. One last opportunity to get out the vote in another crucial swing state. As always, all eyes on pennsylvania and its 20 electoral votes. Part of the three midwest states President Trump flipped in 2016 to lead him to victory. President trump made a stop at his Campaign Headquarters in virginia this morning. Hell spend the evening watching returns at the white house. We also understand he is hosting a party there. As we begin to see results tonight, here is the bottom line. Theres food chance we may not know who the winner is, especially with so many more mailin ballots due to the pandemic, especially in key states like pennsylvania. Election experts are urging people to be patient. The bottom line is, its really important for people to know, because theres been so much more vote by mail this time of around, because of a phenomenon called the blue shift thats been happening more and more. Its entirely possible we will not know who the winner is tonight, and again, nothing wrong with that. Theres no law that says we have to know by tonight. Here is the other important point to make, paced on how and when states release numbers, interests entirely possible we could see major swings in who is leading. Its been called the blue or red mirage. For states that release their early voting or vote by mail counts first, those will likely favor biden, but then as election day results are counted, it could swift back towards President Trump. Greg, you mentioned a few of the key states that could swing this election, but we are expecting to see early results in some other critical states. Yeah, heather, in the next hour or so, well get our First Tranche of release from the state of florida. That have a state that is very close. Democrats have been focused on that state since President Trump won in 2016, so well certainly keep our eyes on that. In addition to the way they count votes, we could see a large count, because theyre allowed to count those vote by mail votes early. In addition to those mitt west states like michigan,s, wisconsin, and pennsylvania. Obviously the president ial election garners so much attention, but the battle for control congress is also being waged today. Democrats trying to recapture the senate, and also expand their lead in the house. Sure. Every seat up in the house. 435 democrats have that edge. They believe that they can make that edge even bigger, but the senate is certainly a big one. Right now republicans leading 53 to 47 in terms of edge there. 35 seats up for grabs. Democrats believe they can win back the senate. We saw how crucial power of the senate was when it came to the confirmation hearing of amy coney barrett, just a week ago. So that have a number of key races that we will be watch Nothing Senate seats up in california, but information a lot of places like arizona that we will be keeping our eyes on. Yeah, we certainly will be. All right, well be checking in with you throughout the night. Greg, thank you. While the president is expected to be watching the results tonight from the white house, joe biden will watch the returns at his home in wilmington, delaware. He told reporters he could speak to the nation tonight if there is something to talk about. If not, he said he will wait until the votes are counted. Vice president ial nominee Kamala Harris will join bead therein in delaware. Across the country people been lining up , eager to cast their ballot for president. In arizona, voters came out en masse to weigh in on the race between mcsally and kelly. The race is considered a crucial one in terps which party will control the senate. People have to realize the freedoms that are on the line. People need to make sure that their own rights are protected at this point. Its bigger than politics. Its a bout social issues. Its about humanity. Its about disparities in healthcare. Theres a lot of things we need to make sure that are protect ed, and this is a really big election. And in new york city, the board of elections said it has hired 4800 additional poll site workers who will be assigned specifically to Line Management but a Record Number of americans have already voted with close to 100 Million People casting their ballots election day. And here in the bay area, voters were out at polling places, all across the area, to cast their ballots. In santa clara, the parking lot at levis stadium was transformed into a big polling place for south bay voters. There was even a separate area for seniors to drop off their ballots. The Oakland Coliseum was also serving as a polling place. In Contra Costa County, we spoke to one womb who became emotional while casting her ballot. Im a teacher of high school students, and i tell them that so many people have fought for us as a black woman, have fought for my right to vote, and so im very proud to be able to have my voice heard and to be an example for the young girls in this world that we have a voice and we do is the power, and they do, too. Contra costa county saw a surge in mail inspect and early voting, with 65 of registered voters getting their ballots in before election day. Vote verse been coming into the Marin Convention center all day today to cast their ballots. Thats where tom vacar is joining us live now. How is the voting going there in the north bay. Reporter well, we are at the Marin Civic Center which is the Frank Lloyd Wright designed building where they have a polling place and the office of the registrar of voters. Theres been an ebb and flow here. Part of that is because so much has already been done. As of last night, 75 of all marin vote verse actually voted by mail or the other ways that they could. And then the registrar, why just spoke to, said they expect to have 90 of all of marins registered voters vote in this election. She said one of the most exciting and certainly one of the most crucial that she has seen in her long history being a ring star of voters both here and up in the sierra. Now, what is the update of martin . It is probably one of the bluest counts in the one of the bluest states in the united states. 60 of the voters in this count call themselves democrat, 27 call themselves independents. Only 13 of the registered voters in this county call themselves republicans. But as of the moment, this is one of several places where you can vote within marin county. What were going to try to do a little later is go over to one of the hotels hereby here where a lot more people show up, because its easier access. Thats the story for now. Tom vacar, ktvu fox 2 news. Before let you go, you talked about 3 4, i believe is what you said, 3 406 the voters in marin county have cast their ballots. When you talk about the folks showing up on application day today to vote, what the reason for that . Did they not get around to cast ing their ballot, so are some people that just like the idea of showing up to their polling places on election day . Reporter well, think some people did wait until the last minute but i think the majority of people here that i spoke to believe in making sure that their ballot is placed in the ballot box, so there is no intermediate area, but most people like the tradition of it, the idea of coming here. One person, one vote, one chance, get it done, and 75 have, and by the end of this evening, the registrar expects 9 out of 10 people in this county are going to say i voted. Yeah, that is just remarkable. Well, businesses are boarded up around the bay area, bracing for the possibility of several unrest, due to the outcome of the election. In downtown walnut creek, stores and restaurants there are taking precautions, and the Police Department said it is on high alert. There have not been any Credible Threats of violence in walnut creek or other bay area cities. The businesses fear that no mat were wins the election, there will be civil unrest. If you ride, you get it. Geico motorcycle. Fifteen minutes could save you fifteen percent or more. This is a record. Breaking year for early voting here in the bay area. You heard tom vacar mention marin county has the highest number of voters turning in their ballots early with a 70 turnout in early voting. Early voting in San Mateo County came if at 65 . Santa clara was just behind at 63 . Overall, more than 60 of the bay areas almost 4. 5 million registered voters had already cast ballots before election day. Well, voter turnout has certainly soared in many parts of the bay area. Christien kafton is live for us now in San Francisco where turnout there is expected to be 80 . Christien . Reporter yeah, historically voter turn out is high in San Francisco as you noted, somewhere north of 80 there president ial Election Years, and this year expected to be no different. This years plot may have a lot of applications for San Francisco for years to come. The combination of the president ial cycle, high interest, and uniform mailin ballots could mean San Francisco will set a record for voter turnout. Voters say theyre motivated. If youre not going to vote today, if its not important today, what sells more important than voting today with whats going on. Reporter San Franciscos director of elections john arnst said more than 60 of ballotst certainty out have already been returned. So far the turnout is 66 for this election which is really good for this point in the election cycle. The activity this morning has been a little bit light compared to other president ial elections that weve experienced recently, but thats, at the same time, we know that were going to have a surge. Politics Professor James taylor from the university of San Francisco said interest this year is understandably high. People are responding to the covid crisis, speaking to the National Elections with their votes. Its showing up in a local pattern. Dr. Jason mcdaniel from San Francisco State University said voter turnout will depend on how the bam between an outflow of people plays out. I think we might see a few thousand at least of those kinds of voters that may not be voting because theyre not here. I think that might impact some of the board of supervisor races. The election with propositions and the board of supervisors races on the ballot are expected to have a major impact on city hall. I expect it to be close. All of these races, and it really is important, it could be a knifes edge on who wins, who loses, and how that shifts the board Going Forward for the next several years. Professor taylor said some things may shift, but he said the more things change, the more they stay the same. This goes back 30 to 40 years now. Were talking about willie brown and every Administration Since has been a democratic liberal, and theyve been challenged by a progressive, more or less progressive board of supervisors that voters continue to give them. At this point, theres no estimate on when the vote count will be completed in San Francisco. The county has 30 days to certify the election results. Christien kafton, ktvu fox 2 news. The Mission District at mannys cafe, which is often a hub for political discussion. Representatives barbara lee and jackie spear and mayor breed and schaaf joined the mayor. The goal was to mobilize voters across the country in order to defeat donald trump. This is unprecedented. And weve long said this, that when democrats vote, when people vote broadly, democrats win, and so we, i think, will prove that theory, just test it tonight, and i just im real confident. Reporter aside from phone calls and text messages, the phone bankers also wrote over 25,000 letters to swing state voters. Well, in bay area weather, this is one of those weeks where in the short term, well be enjoying lots of sunshine and warm temperatures, but just a few days away, not a little drop in the temperatures, a big drop, and we could be tracking some showers here, and maybe some snow in the sierras. Foreyour tuesday evening, we are expecting mostly clear skies. Mild temperatures inland, and most areas should fall within this range of 56 to about 68 degrees for this evening. Lots of clear skies up above. Could have a few patches of fog trying to regroup near portions of the coastline. Lets check in on some of the current numbers. A warm 77 in fairfield. Santa rosa 66, oakland 64, san jose 65, and San Francisco in the upper 50s. Here is our live camera looking out above San Francisco from sutro tower this afternoon. Still a bit of haze in some of the bay area sky, but still lots of sunshine today. Jesse gary joining us now live from san jose with more on this. Jesse . Reporter the registrar of voters here says so far more than 661,000 mailin ballots have been received. Add to that another almost 40,000 people that have gone to county vote centers. And then there are the people who prefer to use the drop boxes. Reporter this first time voter wasnt sure how the ballot drop works. But she is glad multiple ways to cast a vote means her voice will be heard this election cycle. Its definitely exciting, and its going to be really interesting what happened once they start adding up everything. So well see how this goes. Im glad i could be a part of it. All across the south bay, application day sees a stream of voters casting their ballots are voting at polling sites. We got lot of ideologies going on in this country right now, and its important that we vote. Others prefer the ease of dropping their ballots in one of the 100 county drop boxes. Put a voice out to everybody that we have a right who runs our country, and it feels really good to be an american citizen. Reporter Election Officials say so far 2 3 of a million ballots have been cast. The number represents an historic high with no hiccups so far. Really been excited and encouraged by all of the voters ive seen get out and vote. This is probably one of the best elections ive experienced in my 25 years working in this department. Reporter experts say Santa Clara County mirrors National Political interest this election cycle. The usual 60 turnout will be shattered in 2020, according to political scientist dr. Matt record. Trumps signal hat he kind of intends to monkey with the election system may have a sort of backlash effect where once peoples vote is under threat, that causes them to take steps to ensure that their voice is heard. Reporter with professional ballots still to be counted, and mailin ballots allowed to be counted 17 days after election day, many more voices will help weave the preliminary tapestry. . Its going to be a defining moment i fink for a lot of our lives, includes myself. I cant imagine another one being this polarizing. Oh, my god, no, i cant imagine one polarizing than this either. If you have not voted jet just thinking, you know what, im going to go ahead and take the plunge, there is still condition Voter Registration available. Conditional Voter Registration, but you have to go to one of the vote centers here in Santa Clara County to do so. Go there in person. You can register and then you can vote. Back to you. It is never too late. Jesse, i dont think there is anything better than seeing the woman in your piece there voting for the first time. Its just so exciting to see someone cast that ballot the first time and understand the impact theyre going to have. Exactly, with her family there. Thanks to dave, our photographer, for getting that. Absolutely. We appreciate it. Jesse gary live in the south bay. Thank you. Well, we continue to question keep a close eye on the president ial election. Polls about to close in three more states. Well take look after the break. Also, the chances very are slim that well know who the next president will be by tonight. What that means and what the next steps will be. Well discuss with a political expert next. Bubbles at this price . Is this for real . Oh, its real. Believe me. I mean this is upexpected. You would say. Remarkable . Absolutly. A remarkable deal. Thanks. I get that all the time. Wait. What . grocrey outlet jingle to give you the protein you need with less of the sugar you dont. [grunting noise] ill take that. Woohoo 30 grams of protein and 1 gram of sugar. Ensure max protein. With nutrients to support immune health. The polls have just closed in three more states. Those are ohio, West Virginia, and North Carolina. Those are the states you see in gray on this map. The state juice in light green are where the polls have yet to close. Greg lee tracking the results of the president ial election tonight, and, greg, a come of states have already been called. Yeah, i want to say real quickly, North Carolina were watching closely. It could be a little bit delayed because there were some glitches with voting today, and Election Officials have said they will extend the time that those polls are open. Now, just moments after polls closed at the top of the hour on the east coast, fox news is already calling some of these races. I want to take you straight to the electoral map. There you see kentucky and its 8 electoral votes as expected going to President Trump. Vermont going to former Vice President joe biden as expected. Remember, 270 electoral votes. That have the magic number to win. Lets take a look at some of those early returns from a couple of very important states in the sunbelt. Georgia. Joe biden leading early, 53 to 46 . Still a long way to go, but certainly a state that democrats would love to flip from 2016. Now i want to take you to all important florida right now. Just 11 reporting, and as one would expect, it is a dead heat. Joe biden a 1 lead, 50 to 49 . Again, just 11 reporting, but certainly we are going to keep a close eye on florida. That is going to be a major prize there. And one quick note, alex, were just hearing that fox news is now calling West Virginia for President Trump. Again, no surprises so far, and just some very early results from some of those swing states. Two Key Senate Races in georgia, as well, which currently could certainly influence the balance of power in the senate. We are watching those races as well, alex, a lot going on. We have talked a lot, already, greg, as we head to election day, about the potential for either a red mirage or a blue mirage, and you just laid out the results were seeing already in georgia and florida. A lot depends on which ballots are counted first. Right . What do voters need keep in mind . Sure. So it certainly depends on the tranches of votes that come in. So along the sunbelt, a lot of votes counted early are those that were mailed in or done by early voting, and we know because over the pandemic, we have seen some record turnout especially from young people or firsttime voters in those states. So at first, as we get more numbers, it may look like temperatures are having a very good day in those states, but i would caution viewers to know that as more votes are count from todays voting, day of voting in those states, that they could certainly shift towards President Trump, because some of the rhetoric from him around mailin voting. Its a little different in the midwest, where those votes, the numbers released early on, are those from day of voting, and, again, they have said in states like pennsylvania, michigan, and wisconsin, that it could take days to count some of those absentee ballots, alex. Well, political experts have warned that the results of the president ial election likely will not be decided tonight. Joining us once again to discuss is david mcewen, Political Science professor at sonoma state. David, always a pleasure to see you. We should not be surprised if it takes day or two or longer to decide who, in fact, is the winner of this election. Yeah, you have to kind of think about a couple of differentsen arroyos. Someone that if there is a wave that builds for joe biden it and doesnt come down to florida or doesnt come down to pennsylvania in joe biden already at 270, it doesnt matter that philadelphia comes in on wednesday or thursday, or parts of pennsylvania come in at one time or another. Pennsylvania being key here. However, if the vase close, if no one clearly has the momentum, 0 or is at 270, and its 2 00 a. M. Tonight, a late night, and were going to drag this out a little bit, thats where things could get a little bit crazy. So thats what you should watch. If you take, for example, just the area around pittsburgh, pennsylvania, and just the area of philadelphia, thats about 25 of the vote in pennsylvania. So that could be important down the road. However, theres also what is happening in these senate races, and in those senate races, President Trump has been a drag on many of the candidates. So if joe biden does well and democrats do well tonight, what does the spread look like between the president s vote and those down ballot or u. S. Senators running for re election . Something to watch tonight. So you helped us identify the things to be watching for tonight, but, david, discuss for the audience some of the factors that could lead to the actual count taking longer than they might expect. Sure. So if you think about it, elections are really governed state by state and county by county. So how counties count the ballot, how they process the ballots. What that looks like in terms of automatic verification, versus manual verification of signatures. What that looks like. In california, most regional stars prepared to handle this deluge. But earlier voting has been so large, and whether or not we see a spike up, for example, of voters who will tend to be republican this particular election, how is that handled in terms of counting . Are you running the ballots today or after the polls close, and how often are you processing those and announcing the results. The pressure on those registrars to announce results, the pressure will be really huge in some areas. It certainly is. But really you cannot talk enough about the enormous volume, david, of mailin ballots. Especially we know, just look at california here, right . This has got to affect the process. It does. It does slow it down. Because what registrars want to do county by county they want an accurate count, and do you want that accurate count, votersed should know if youre in line before the polls close, dont leave, stay. There there is an obligation to count your ballot and your vote. We have between 150 and as many as maybe 160 Million People are going to vote. This is a record election with lots of people voting for the first time. That also will slow down the process. Okay. But, david, if the process is stretched out, do you believe that it is, in fact, going to stoke partisan tension, even though it is how the process is designed to work, you know, to go about this in a timely methodical manner, but is that delay going to stoke partisan division . Sure. Its going to stoke lawyers on both sides. Its going to stoke what we call the Brooks Brothers army. Those lawyers are going to be pushing on county registrars to record things and pushing on the courts. Most states have 30 days to certify the results, and they want to go slow, but they also want to be accurate. A wave builds tonight and its clear early what the direction happening in states like fiscal income, georgia, florida, and texas and those upper midwest states like wisconsin, michigan, pennsylvania, and we know whats going on, thats a different scenario. But there can be, if the process is slow and the counting slow, it can lead to pressure on these registrars to move things along. Yeah, sounds like, though, your message to everyone watching tonight be patient. All right, david mcewen, really appreciate it. Thanks again. And tonight, as the results roll in, well giving you several options to stay informed on ktvu. Well have special national confirm of the president ial election, as youre watching that, you can also stream local results on your second screen, so you can watch both at the same time. Just go to watch live on ktvu. Com, or the ktvu app, and of course all results will be posted on ktvu. Com as they come in. Well, bay area weather, another sunny warm day today, but we are tracking those changes as we head into friday and the weekend. Were talking about the possibility of some rainfall, but this is not like the real soaking rainfall that will bring an end to fire season, but still some scattered showers could be paying us a visit later in the week.
