For states that release their early voting or vote by mail counts first, those will likely favor biden, but then as election day results are counted, it could swift back towards President Trump. Democrats have been focused on that state since President Trump won in 2016, so well certainly keep our eyes on that. In addition to the way they count votes, we could see a large count, because theyre allowed to count those vote by mail votes early. In addition to those mitt west states like michigan,s, wisconsin, and pennsylvania. And here in the bay area, voters were out at polling places, all across the area, to cast their ballots. In santa clara, the parking lot at levis stadium was transformed into a big polling place for south bay voters. There was even a separate area for seniors to drop off their ballots. The Oakland Coliseum was also serving as a polling place. In Contra Costa County, we spoke to one womb who became emotional while casting her ballot. Im a teacher of high school students, and i tell them that so many people have fought for us as a black woman, have fought for my right to vote, and so im very proud to be able to have my voice heard and to be an example for the young girls in this world that we have a voice and we do is the power, and they do, too. Contra costa county saw a surge in mail inspect and early voting, with 65 of registered voters getting their ballots in before election day. Reporter well, we are at the Marin Civic Center which is the Frank Lloyd Wright designed building where they have a polling place and the office of the registrar of voters. Theres been an ebb and flow here. Part of that is because so much has already been done. As of last night, 75 of all marin vote verse actually voted by mail or the other ways that they could. And then the registrar, why just spoke to, said they expect to have 90 of all of marins registered voters vote in this election. She said one of the most exciting and certainly one of the most crucial that she has seen in her long history being a ring star of voters both here and up in the sierra. Now, what is the update of martin . It is probably one of the bluest counts in the one of the bluest states in the united states. 60 of the voters in this count call themselves democrat, 27 call themselves independents. Only 13 of the registered voters in this county call themselves republicans. But as of the moment, this is one of several places where you can vote within marin county. What were going to try to do a little later is go over to one of the hotels hereby here where a lot more people show up, because its easier access. Thats the story for now. Did they not get around to cast ing their ballot, so are some people that just like the idea of showing up to their polling places on election day . Reporter well, think some people did wait until the last minute but i think the majority of people here that i spoke to believe in making sure that their ballot is placed in the ballot box, so there is no intermediate area, but most people like the tradition of it, the idea of coming here. One person, one vote, one chance, get it done, and 75 have, and by the end of this evening, the registrar expects 9 out of 10 people in this county are going to say i voted. Yeah, that is just remarkable. Well, businesses are boarded up around the bay area, bracing for the possibility of several unrest, due to the outcome of the election. In downtown walnut creek, stores and restaurants there are taking precautions, and the Police Department said it is on high alert. There have not been any Credible Threats of violence in walnut creek or other bay area cities. The businesses fear that no mat were wins the election, there will be civil unrest. This years plot may have a lot of applications for San Francisco for years to come. The combination of the president ial cycle, high interest, and uniform mailin ballots could mean San Francisco will set a record for voter turnout. Voters say theyre motivated. If youre not going to vote today, if its not important today, what sells more important than voting today with whats going on. Reporter San Franciscos director of elections john arnst said more than 60 of ballotst certainty out have already been returned. So far the turnout is 66 for this election which is really good for this point in the election cycle. The activity this morning has been a little bit light compared to other president ial elections that weve experienced recently, but thats, at the same time, we know that were going to have a surge. Politics Professor James taylor from the university of San Francisco said interest this year is understandably high. People are responding to the covid crisis, speaking to the National Elections with their votes. Its showing up in a local pattern. Dr. Jason mcdaniel from San Francisco State University said voter turnout will depend on how the bam between an outflow of people plays out. I think we might see a few thousand at least of those kinds of voters that may not be voting because theyre not here. I think that might impact some of the board of supervisor races. The election with propositions and the board of supervisors races on the ballot are expected to have a major impact on city hall. I expect it to be close. All of these races, and it really is important, it could be a knifes edge on who wins, who loses, and how that shifts the board Going Forward for the next several years. Professor taylor said some things may shift, but he said the more things change, the more they stay the same. This goes back 30 to 40 years now. Add to that another almost 40,000 people that have gone to county vote centers. And then there are the people who prefer to use the drop boxes. Reporter this first time voter wasnt sure how the ballot drop works. But she is glad multiple ways to cast a vote means her voice will be heard this election cycle.
