Eastbound 580, several lanes blocked with a deadly crash on eastbound 580 as you head up toward greenville road just at the bottom of the grade. Now normally westbound is slow this morning. Im not sure if at that point people can see the crash. Its normally slow there. Anyway, lets talk about the bay bridge now steve mentioned it things are improving at the bay bridge. This usually doesnt happen in winter or fall or even in spring. But in summer, once things start improving, they kind of get going fast. And that bay bridge is improving quite a bit. San mateo bridge as well. I do want to mention something that happened southbound 101 at blossom hill road. Again, count commute, but theres a crash there. 802 lets get back to the headlines. And alex, are the roads in the area still closed . And what do people have to know if they may be driving on the central freeway or through hayes valley . Thats right, ali. There is some disruption to traffic here at octavia street at oak. Thats because of this devastating fire from yesterday morning. Were hearing that the blaze that displaced eight neighbors is still under investigation by the fire department. Fortunately no one was hurt. No word on what started it. Back in may, the hayes Valley Neighborhood Association sent a formal letter to city leaders concerned about street fires that happened along octavia street since may. Neighbors also concerned about unsheltered people using the unsecured building site that was under construction. Weve heard squatters would use the space and then leave before workers showed up in the morning. This man lives across the street from the site. He says homeless encampments are all around this area. Hes concerned about the safety of the entire community. Its complicated. People need places to live. I mean, i understand that. And, you know, i personally im just thinking about the people who live next door who have been affected with their housing now. Right. Like where are they going . How are they living now . Eight neighbors were displaced from this fire damage to their homes. Most due to water later today, crews will return with the crane to remove some of that jagged metal thats melted from all that fire yesterday morning. In the meantime, traffic is a little disrupted. Streets are still taped off, so plan accordingly if youre going to be planning to travel in this area. As for the San Francisco fire department, they report theyre still investigating what happened. They brought down this huge construction site live in hayes valley. Alison ktvu, fox two news. All right, thank you, alex, for that update. The many has another Court Appearance august 15th. Donald trump is expected to appear in federal court tomorrow. He faces charges in yet another federal indictment, this time for his efforts to overturn the 2020 election. It was fueled by lies , lies by the defendant targeted at obstructing a bedrock function of the us government. Justice Department Special counsel jack smith has spent months investigating trump. The indictment accuses trump of exploiting the january 6th attack on the us capitol in order to delay the counting of votes in the 2020 president ial election. Trump faces four counts related to his efforts to overturn that election. Republicans meanwhile, have rushed to his defense. Hes being indicted for free speech. Hes being indicted for objecting to the way that the 2020 election was carried out. Now the case will add to trumps rising legal fees and could complicate his Campaign Efforts. However, recent polls have shown he is the clear gop frontrunner for 2024. The judge, who will oversee Donald Trumps latest criminal case is known for harsh sentences for the january 6th rioters. Washington d. C. Federal judge tonya chunkin was randomly selected to oversee trumps criminal case. Well, there are new reports of some movement in the strike by the Writers Guild. The studios have asked Union Officials to meet about restarting contract talks since the strike began three months ago. This is the First Official communication between the Writers Guild and the studios and streaming services and production companies. The Writers Guild told Union Members that they would get an update after the two sides meet that is scheduled to happen on friday. Theres no indication yet that the companies have also contacted the leaders of sagaftra, thats the actors union. They are also on strike the minute city council is considering a local law that would set a minimum wage for rideshare drivers. California, washington and new york already have laws to give drivers a minimum wage. The state law here , which voters approved in 2020, is headed for the state supreme court. Now, lyft says the minneapolis plan could double what riders pay. That would likely lead to fewer rides. So drivers would see a drop in their pay. But one minneapolis drivers says companies are already charging riders more than they did just a few years ago and decreasing the amount drivers can earn. And now i have to work like 80 18 hours every day, you know, to make to make a list, to hundred and 50, sometimes not even 200. Insurance is not cheap. Maintenance is not cheap. Advocates for rideshare drivers across the country say the law in washington is one that works their drivers earn a minimum pay of 3 per trip. A new york journalist who went to interview ubers ceo had a surprising question for the companys leader. The reporter from wired asked the uber boss to guess how much his uber ride would cost to the company headquarters, which was just about three miles away. The ceo guessed 20. The reporter told him with a tip. The total came to 51. 69. And note that if he had booked the trip five minutes earlier before 10 a. M, the fare would have cost 20 more than that. The uber ceo blamed the high cost on surge pricing and inflation. Tom 809 right now and we do see a crash in san jose southbound 101 at blossom hill road and thats if youre leaving, lets say san jose for gilroy. Dont let that stop you because well, i mean, you should give yourself extra time though. Eastbound 580, same thing connor commute eastbound. Not a lot of people going that way, but there is a lane blockage on eastbound 580 near greenville and usually theres no backup here. So theres going to be at least a mile, maybe a little more than that of a backup approaching a very serious crash on eastbound 588. Greenville, westbound, 580 coming in over the altamont pass. Looks about the way it normally does. And at the bay bridge toll plaza, we have seen improvement even though we had some issues on the bridge earlier. Things are improving. And if you wait until nine, i think itll probably be a lot better even then. Eight, ten. Lets go back to the desk. Thank you, sal. Vector control workers in the south bay will start spraying for mosquitoes tonight. Still to come, where they will focus their efforts and why theyre trying to help stop the spread of west nile virus. And helping solve 1 million smash and grab at a san ramon Jewelry Store. A Security Camera showed images of two gunmen confronting security guards and store workers while a family ran off to safety. Theres also video of a man using a hammer to smash into a jewelry case. Other evidence includes video of an orange Dodge Charger and a Jeep Grand Cherokee at the scene. When we heard that a vehicle of the same description was back in the city and was possibly associated with hellas jewelers, it gave us a lead to go on. Investigators were able to track down the suspected robbers because there was a gps tracker in one of the rolex watches that they stole. Both of the vehicles were found abandoned in east Oakland Police were also able to connect some of the suspects to those vehicles. The reason the fbi was involved was because the stolen rolex watches were imported from switzerland and were taken across state lines. Police are still looking for two other suspected robbers. The fbi says it has located 200 victims of sex trafficking in a nationwide operation. Authorities say 59 of the victims were minors. They also found 59 missing children during the two week operation last month. That campaign also led to the identification or arrests of 126 suspects. The fbi says its victims specialists provided emergency food and clothing, shelter and other crisis intervention to the victims of the sex traffickers. Alameda county supervisor have voted to reduce the maximum possible jail time for sideshow spectators. The original ordinance by the county had said that people within 200ft of a sideshow could be fined 1,000 and sentenced to up to six months in jail. But supervisors later reduced the jail time to three months. But forgot to change the wording of the law that they passed last month. Yesterdays vote officially reduced the jail time to three months. The law goes into effect one week from today. Theres still questions about the legality of that ordinance, though today will be day two of San Jose City workers voting on whether or not to go on strike. The bargaining teams of two city unions are recommending that Union Members authorize a three day strike. Theyve been working without a contract since the end of june. The unions represent more than 4500 city employees, including labor koreans 911 dispatchers. Animal shelter techs, engineers and airport staff. Theyre demanding pay increases, parental leave and increase staffing. We are facing a staff crisis right now in our city. We have over 1000 vacancies and we want to be able to serve our community and do the best for our residents. San jose mayor mehan says the city has offered a 5 pay raise plus increased paid parental leave next year. If we go beyond a 5 raise in year one, which is where the county just settled with seiu, we have to identify what were going to cut. I havent heard yet from any Council Members or from the bargaining units what they suggest we cut on monday. Well get the results of the san jose strike vote. Theres no target date yet, though, for a strike later today. Fast food workers at several san jose restaurants will be going on strike. Theyre joining with the group fight for 15, urging state lawmakers to deal with problems that include wage theft and unsafe to hold corporations, including mcdonalds, accountable when franchises violate labor laws. There are new concerns in the Financial Services industry as some 28 million student loan borrowers will need to start making payments on federal student loan debt. This comes after a three year pause. The latest survey from Morgan Stanley found just 26 of consumers with federal Student Loans feel confident theyll have enough money to resume Monthly Payments. 36 say theyll have to cut back. In other areas to make those payments. And 38 say they wont be able to make the payments at all if people have to use their funds now to pay loans, they wont have as much money to buy things that help to fuel the economy. So it should have some effect on the gross domestic product, which has actually been doing fairly well this year. Were kind of moving at about a 2. 5 clip right now in spite of the high Interest Rates that were seeing, student Loan Interest is set to resume on september 1st and Monthly Payments will begin in october. All right. Its 8 to 18. Back over to sal for a look at traffic. What are you keeping an eye on, sal . Well, were looking at an improving bay bridge now. It was improved a little bit and then it slowed down again. I think sometimes people show up late and youll see it is now backed up. It was improved and now its backed up beyond 880. But i still think its going to stay improve. And thats because the 880 ramps just dont have the volume. If youre driving into San Francisco right there, you can see theres not a lot of volume there. And thats why i think its going to stay improved. San mateo bridge has already improved substantial eastbound 580. Dont let this catch you by surprise at greenville. A pretty serious accident at greenville road. Its going to take an investigation to. So this is going to be slow in an area we wouldnt expect slowing westbound. Of course you do expect that slowing and its slow coming in from the tracy triangle to livermore. 819 lets talk about the weather now. Heres steve. Thank you kindly, sal. Yes, sir. All right. Take a look at that fog bank on the visible satellite. Some breaks in it, though, especially on the peninsula. Some of thats moving north, dare i say. Maybe well get some clearing here in the Oakland Alameda estuary. Its gray right now, but watch how you can see the clearing. San jose poof like that. Still, fremont in the soup, if you will, down to the santa clara valley. But saratoga, mountain view, palo alto and then moving north maybe towards hayward there on the san mateo bridge and the dumbarton getting some clearing there. San bruno mountain, though, in tilden park before all the clearing 0. 03 on the drizzle la honda picked up oh. 02 and near the Claremont Hotel at. 01, low pressure system is taking aim at the high, so its packed its bags. Its heading east. As it does, it takes that moisture, monsoon moisture with it as well. So thats out of the picture. Still lots of activity down around las vegas, salt lake city, also into the four corners. But for our immediate concerns, its cooler pattern, especially for these for san rafael, san mateo, walnut creek and san jose, 76, 70, 79 and 74 on the forecast highs today. Inland temps continue their march down. It was a hot one on sunday, 94 in concord. Monday was still hot. 93, 85 yesterday going 80 today and a cool 78. Thats you know, that wont last in august and it wont because by the weekend theyll be back up into the 90s there west southwest 25 two bits there travis t31. So the delta breeze is kicking up its heels 5060s on the temps, 63 concord, rio vista and also brentwood, san jose at 62. Low clouds and fog will retreat. Maybe take a little longer to the north. But overall, we are seeing this series of lows. Take the high and kick it out of here for a couple of days. That allows our cooler pattern and more drizzle looks to be in the forecast tonight. Also tomorrow, maybe even friday morning before i think well get that fog bank starting to get compressed and be more confined to the coast as we go to the weekend. Big fog bank though, coast in bay drizzle sunny inland cooler breezy to windy though 6070s 80s below average coast bay and inland that will continue tomorrow probably about friday then does look warm to hot for some inland areas over the weekend. You too. All right thanks steve. Well Climate Change according to scientists, is making big ocean waves along the california coast even bigger. So theres no extended heat, but it will warm up after a couple of days. But today its 60s and 70s as livermore 580. Yeah, unusual delays are what usually. Well unusual delays are what people hate because usually at this time eastbound 580 is not slow getting out to the central valley. But if youre leaving the bay area, going out to the central valley, there is a big backup approaching greenville road because of a very serious crash. And it and some traffic is getting through, but its very slow now in the commute direction. We do have the bay bridge improving quite a bit. No problems there. San mateo bridge has improved quite a bit and so has the dumbarton bridge. Things are much better. South bay commute mostly good. Southbound 101 near blossom hill. Theyre clearing a crash. 831 lets go back to the headlines. All right. Thank you, sal. Donald trump has been summoned to appear in federal court tomorrow.
