Police in San Francisco are searching for a man who was caught on Surveillance Video shooting multiple rounds in the middle of the street in the citys tenderloin district. Our crime reporter, henry lee found out no one was hurt, but plenty of people were startled. Keep your eye on the man on the left as he walks near the corner of hyde and ellis in San Franciscos tenderloin. All of a sudden he reacts to something and then pulls out a gun and starts firing. As the man opens fire. People scatter and scramble for cover, including this man on a scooter. They dont have any type of morals or standards these days. They just do anything that they want in the street. But the gunmans not done. He continues to fire more shots before stopping and running off. The shooting happened at about 1110 sunday night. San Francisco Police responded to a shotspotter activation. Officers found spent shell casings but no victims. Surveillance video on a nearby building captured the incident. The video was posted by tenderloin tube and retweeted by the San Francisco sheriffs union. I showed residents the video to gauge their reaction. Its just crazy that it happens out here in the community that we live in because its children and women out here. You know what i mean . Im not surprised. It happens like weekly on my street. I dont know. I think its just like the same thing you see in la, you know, skid row. Its like mini skid row here. You shop dealing a lot in here. Shootings you should be here a lot and then move to up there. Many more hpd patrolling around. But besides sfpd, the feds have also been paying close attention to violence in the tenderloin. These images show urban alchemy worker darnell houston firing a gun near hyde and golden gate. He was charged in federal court and got probation after arguing it was self defense. The feds have more more power when it comes to things like like, you know, ammunition and guns and things that they can do and make happen. Sfpd is investigating the case with those recovered shell casings. Its quite possible the feds could get involved, assuming that gun or ammo was made outside california and they link that evidence to a suspect. Supervisor, hilary ronen today criticized supervisor matt dorseys proposal to scrap the Wellness Center plans and instead divert millions of dollars into jailhouse programs. Ctvs Jana Katsuyama spoke with both supervisors. Shes live tonight in the newsroom with more on the controversy. Jenna mike and julie, supervisor ronen said that she could not believe that supervisor dorsey abandoned the plan so suddenly. Dorsey says the plan for wellness hubs has changed so much, he says he cant continue to support them. This building at 444 sixth street near the hall of justice in San Francisco, was identified as a future Wellness Center for drug users, a place to get users off the streets and closer to care and services. Its an attempt to solve the citys drug problems, but also a concern for people working at the Beauty Supply business next door. I think it would be bad for our business. I think that they should find another place to put it. San francisco supervisor matt dorsey, who represent the neighborhood, originally voted for the idea, but he sent a letter to mayor london breed friday saying he no longer supports that plan. When i signed up for this, the idea was that wellness hub was going to be a safe consumption site. It was going to have other services. Dorsey says one reason hes upset is that the number of Wellness Centers has been reduced. There was going to be six different sites and six different neighborhoods to relieve the pressure. That narrowed down to three sites one in the tenderloin, one in the mission, and one in south of market. Then it narrowed to one site. Dorsey also says the City Attorney has ruled that none of the Wellness Centers can have supervised consumption sites because theyre illegal under federal law. Dorsey says he no longer thinks the wellness hubs will be effective in reaching drug users. Instead he wants the 18. 9 million in funding diverted to help incarcerated drug users through Jail Health Services supervisor Hillary Ronen called dorseys pivot a political ploy. She says Wellness Centers are important and can still help drug users, even if they dont offer a supervised consumption space. What we can do is we can fund all the other services that Wellness Centers provide counseling, Harm Reduction supplies, acupuncture, wound treatment, visits with doctor ronen says dorseys district already has a Harm Reduction center nearby at sixth street and mission streets that is overwhelmed with demand for services. It provides life saving care to drug users every single day. Previously 150 people a day were using those services. Now theyre is a request of over 500 people a day to request those services. So what comes next . Ronan says the Wellness Center in dorseys district and another in the mission could be ready by the end of this year and a third in the tenderloin by march of next year. Dorsey says he does not want to wait around and hopes that the mayor will support his request to move the funds immediately to jail programs. Mike Jana Katsuyama live tonight in the newsroom.
