The painstaking task of searching for victims continues with crews using cadaver dogs. But the process has been slow and Authorities Say just 3 of the burn area in lahaina has been searched. The fire destroyed or damaged 2200 structures, most of them homes. Right now, maui county Officials Say 4500 people are in need of shelter. Reporter gina silva live tonight from maui and kihei, where the community is mobilizing to help gina. Yes they certainly are. I can tell you that many people on this island are frustrated with the way the government is handling this natural disaster. So they are taking it upon themselves to help the people of lahaina cooking oil. You cant sit back and watch people suffer. You have to jump in and help. At the kihei boat ramp in maui, volunteers are busy collecting donations for people in lahaina. We feel like we are crowdsourcing and running our own logistics coordination and supplies, getting them in here you can see behind you these are all local residents. We have people coming in from the neighboring islands. We had a boat come in last night from the big island with supplies of epipens, water, propane tanks, fuel, baby supplies, clothing. People in this community are bringing all kinds of necessities for their neighbors. Right now, the government is letting us down. So its really important that all of the people of maui stick together, come together and support one another at this really crazy time. I feel i have to do whatever i can. Im here. My brothers and sisters are over there suffering. I have to do something in maui. John tour boats loaded with supplies are making runs to lahaina several times a day. So a lot of whats happening is jet ski transfer. While authorities deny reports of looting, volunteers tell the different story. Caravans coming in with supplies are being at gunpoint, arent we are fearful that law and order is going to break down and we need boots on the ground and assistance s immediately. Theres just a lot of blockage on the roads right now. Thats why a lot of the vessels are going straight over to the Upper West Side and dropping goods directly off to the families in need. And joining me is stefan. You guys just made the last run to lahaina. Describe how the community is doing right now. Theyre super grateful that were able to bring gasoline, propane, medical supplies, diapers, formula and yeah, theyre very grateful. And yeah, theyre doing well. Theyre doing well now. Everybody here is just like so united. You know, its this spirit of maui here. Yeah. And your message to the people who you know, our viewers who are watching, how can they help . Yeah, were maui , maui strong. Mauis the best. My local you can help by finding different ways to give or you can send toothbrushes. You can send pillows. You can actually send money to the right kind of organizations that can distribute that. Well, im with the awakening church in maui here. And were also raising money to distribute to people in need in lahaina. And so im dougs pastor. He owns the maui snorkeling tour. And we this is our Second Mission going out there. And theyre in deep need of all kinds of supplies. They need radios. They dont know whats going on. They cant they cant get any information over there on obviously, medications. Theyre asking for food and gasoline is a big item that they need. Well, thank you so much. Keep up the great work. Im sure everybody here appreciates it, especially the people in lahaina. Thank you so much. Now, you know, you heard in the piece about the looting. I did speak with a Business Owner in lahaina whose business was looted, but he doesnt call it that. He says people were desperate. Right after the fire. You know, theres nothing going on there. No ones allowed to go inside at the time to go into that town. So they were hungry. They needed food. They needed water, some blankets. So he doesnt fault those people. He blames the government for taking too long to respond with any assistance. Yeah, gina, you know, to follow up on that, do you get a sense that that it is a slow response from the federal government from your Vantage Point . Every one here says it has been a very slow response. And one of the things theyre mostly frustrated with are the roads that are blocked to the island. Very few people are allowed in. I know yesterday we spoke with a gentleman who has been who was there for hours in line trying to get back, takes some medications to his wife. And he was not allowed to go in. So its extremely difficult to get back into the town. And thats why some of these supplies, theyre being taken on boats like this. Yeah can you tell us whether or not the west of maui airport is operating at the time we know that its closer to the damaged areas than the main airport there in kihei. Is relief being flown to the west maui side . You know, thats a very good question. I kept calling the airport. There was no answer whatsoever. I did speak with a couple of people who believe it has reopened, but i cannot confirm that because i wasnt able to on my side. I can tell you that power has been restored, limited in some areas , but most of lahaina still doesnt have any power. I know theyve made a donation to wifi. Trucks were donated to the town so people can go and charge up their cell phone. I was able to do a zoom today with a Business Owner. We were not able to do that before today. So things are slowly coming back. All right. Gina silva reporting live for us in maui. Gina, thank you for that report. We dont want to use the calm and mild conditions that weve experienced this year so far as a kind of false reading on the vulnerability that were actually in. Jonathan cox with cal fire said theyre already preparing for what could be a dangerous week for fires in the bay area. We dispatch resources based on the danger for that, that exact moment. Our priority is to keep all fires or 95 of the fires at ten acres or less. And that really comes down to an aggressive initial attack. Cal fire says they use a two pronged approach to fight fires. We can bring in additional staffing based on the conditions so as we start to look at areas that are going to have lightning or extreme heat or potentially wind , we will staff Additional Resources in those locations. They also use a strong initial attack utilizing californias fire air force, which is the largest in the world, to attack the flames from above and back staff to ensure all local Fire Departments remain fully staffed at all times. But cox says weather conditions can create perfect storms for large, dangerous fires. Firefighting is very ineffective when youre up against 80 mile an hour winds. And really at that point its just a Mass Evacuation until we get substantial rain. This fall and winter, the fire conditions are elevated across the state. Now cox told me theres a few things people can do to ensure that you are ready for fire season number one. Thats to have an evacuation plan in place. Number two, to ensure that there is Defensible Space around your property. And three, if you have to evacuate to get out early in the newsroom. Im bailey ocarroll, ktvu fox two news.
