Lets find out how things are going to be looking with Steve Paulson. Hes been tracking all the latest for us. Still a little cloudy behind you, steve. A lot of low clouds, but once that burns back, then, more sunshine today than what we had over the weekend here. And temperatures starting off 50s and 60s havent changed really. And if youre far enough inland, youll start to bump out of those 70s get into the 80s. Our system with the thunderstorm activity is now moved out. So much calmer here, especially up in the mountains. 6070s and 80s on your highs and your average to a little bit below. All right, back to ali. An update on the traffic. Ali we are keeping an eye on the Road Conditions out there. Its very, very empty at the bay bridge toll plaza. No problems getting into the city. And im checking the chp log and theres really not much to tell folks about this morning. So overall, light traffic just about everywhere, including highway 24 and lafayette, you can see traffic moving smoothly and just not a lot of people out on the road right now. That could, of course, change later today, say when people start returning from their destinations from this three day Labor Day Weekend andre. All right. Well, happening now, a section of interstate 80 is closed again this morning as caltran as crews are finishing up a project thats been going on for weeks. Ctvs Amanda Quintana joins us live from near the carquinez bridge to tell us what drivers should expect there until the work wraps up early tomorrow morning. We got to deal with it another day. Amanda yeah, just another full day. It should be done by 5 00 tomorrow morning. So that is the plan. But you can see this is the westbound side of the carquinez bridge closed right now. And caltrans has been hard at work doing this main major pavement repairs in this area. Now its a three mile stretch that theyve been working on. Theyve been trying to move quickly, closing down the highway over four weekends to try to avoid a big traffic impact. But those detours have caused some headaches and we could see a backup with people coming back from their Labor Day Weekend vacations. Now, if we take a look at the map, the closures are on the westbound side this weekend, the detour takes drivers onto 780in vallejo past benicia and then onto 680 towards concord. You can then re enter 80 at highway four. Now if youre headed up to sacramento, that side of the highway and the bridge is open, still the pavement on i80 that were replacing, weve been spot repairing for over 30 years. So what were doing in one fell swoop is completely replacing that area so we dont have to go back for 40 years. This weekend is the first time in its 20 year history that the carquinas bridge has been closed. Many of us know it as the carquinez bridge, but its named the alfred zampa memorial bridge, named after an ironworker that worked on multiple bridges in the bay area. Now, he actually fell off the Golden Gate Bridge. He was in the hospital for weeks, but he came back to continue to his work in this Labor Day Weekend. He and other men and women that have helped build and maintain our infrastructure here are being celebrated. Were actually going to talk to his grandson son later this morning who is also an ironworker. So thatll be pretty cool to catch up with him. Also on the bridge while its been closed, caltrans has been able to make some other repairs to lights and things like that. But they say they know this has been kind of a headache to be closed. Different areas over the last over these four weekends that theyve had areas closed. But they say when people come back, they will feel the difference, itll be smoother and they will be happy that they ended up doing all of this work live in vallejo. Amanda quintana, ktvu fox two news. Amanda, thank you. Investigators wont provide any other information about what happened to that person who died. Now, Rainy Weather on friday and saturday turned the Festival Grounds into a muddy mess. Some people were able to make it out before festival organizers closed the gates for safety reasons. As many as 60,000 other festival goers are still stuck on the playa of the Black Rock Desert. Most people are still just chilling, as you can see around me, there are some empty campsites, but people seem to have been embraced out and are not. One did about getting out of here. Most of those people were able to get out on their own. But two people in inflatable kayaks had to be pulled out of the water by First Responders. Well, for many people, labor day is the holiday that marks the end of summer. And is celebrated with backyard barbecues or a day at the pool. But the holiday was first proposed as a way to honor workers and their contributions to society. The first celebration of labor day happened in new york city in 1882. It became a federal holiday 12 years later. This year, many workers are using it to remind Corporate America of their value. Ups reached a new contract with the Teamsters Union before the strike was called. A United Auto Workers are preparing to possibly strike scriptwriter and actors are on strike. And American Airlines flight attendants just authorized a strike because they believe theyre being taken advantage of by their employers. Were all fighting corporate greed. The record setting revenues as yet, we are still here without a contract, you cant make 21 billion in profits in half a year and expect members to take a mediocre contract. Work has changed dramatically since that first labor day. More than 100 years ago, with worker concerns now including remote work and artificial intelligence, as well as some longtime concerns like worker safety and pay for companies. The biggest concern this labor day is finding enough workers to fill lower paying jobs, many of which have workers and customers meeting face to face. Well, new figures from the bureau of labor statistics show manufacturing tops the list of sectors seeing significant worker shortages, with 550,000 job openings in july. Construction is next with about 363,000 jobs available. The numbers show there are shortages of commercial airline pilots, High School Teachers and school bus drivers. It should be noted that us Unemployment Rate is at an historical low of 3. 8. Well, lets take a look at some of the businesses that are closed this labor day. Banks post offices and the stock market and government offices are closed. Ups and fedex stores will not be open today, but will still pick up and deliver. Costco stores and its gas stations are closed. Most transit agencies will run on a holiday or sunday schedule. Well, coming up, building an entire city from scratch. The pilot was pulled from the wreckage and rushed to the hospital, but was later pronounced dead. Well, metallica has postponed a Holiday Weekend concert in arizona after lead singer James Hetfield tested positive for covid 19. The bay area based band has now rescheduled last nights scheduled show in glendale to september ninth. Metallica is currently on a two year world Tour Supporting its latest album, 72 seasons. According to a statement posted on social media, buffett had been battling merkel cell cancer for the past four years. This type of skin cancer is very rare and tends to spread quickly to other parts of the body. Ten sirens have been installed across the city with plans to install another five next year. The sirens wail and provide verbal messages to inform residents about an emergency in their area, like a wildfire or tsunami. Theres a solar powered and connected to pgncs power grid. The city is also reminding residents to sign up for the Alameda CountyEmergency Alert text message system on the county website. Well, there are growing concerns about the threat of a major wildfire in california with the state now moving into what is usually peak fire season. And for some, the recent decline in the number of fire Lookout Towers is adding to those fears. At one time, there were more than 600 lookout sites in areas of high fire danger across the state. That number has now dropped to fewer than 200. Cal fire says these towers and the volunteers in them have played a Critical Role in spotting wildfires before they get out of control. We currently have a 360 degree view on a clear day. We can see up to 100 miles. I believe that the human eye is the best tool up in the Lookout Tower nor west. We can see the pilot peak range, which is where another cal fire lookout is located. Cal fire says the recent decline in the number of Lookout Towers is due mostly to a dwindling number of volunteers. Firefighting efforts across the state have also shifted to rely on webcams and even Sensor Technology to spot fires. Well, there is a new development in the plan to build a 55 story residential skyscraper overlooking ocean beach and the San Francisco zoo. The original proposal was sent back to the developers after it failed to meet San Franciscos height limitations. Well, now the developers have submitted a new application under a new state law that allows developers to build taller buildings if they add Affordable Housing units. The plan has the support of some of the People Living in that neighborhood. We need more housing. We need more housing in every neighborhood in the city, including the avenues. Im super excited about the project that i hope they do end up building out there. However, critics still have concerns about this high rise project and the way the developers have been dealing with the city. A lot of their reasoning for this does not make any sense to me. Ive ive read through the application, ive read through the citys response to the application in the its hard to i think the city has had to exercise a lot of patience in dealing with this developer, considering some of the outlandish accusations theyve made. Well, a spokesperson for San Franciscos Planning Department says the city is still reviewing this latest application version. Well, the vision of a new city in Solano County is being met with skepticism from some local residents and officials. The group flannery associates, backed by a major Silicon Valley investors here purchased land large swaths of land near highway 12 between rio vista and fairfield. But theyve to theyve they have to convince locals before they can actually build anything. And that may be easier said than done, since some residents say theyre concerned about the secrecy involved in the project. Solano county leaders are weighing the pros and cons of the idea, which is still in the very early stages, were told. If its done correctly. I think theres a lot of opportunities for the county. We probably will get better medical access. We probably will get better stores, well get better restaurants, but were going to get a lot more traffic. Were going to get a lot more congestion. The better thing would be to approach our city leaders and work with us within our city boundaries, not to create a new city. I think that endeavor is a bit self motivated with their own end goal, which is to create a new playground for who they want there versus what the needs of our residents are in our community members. Well the people behind the proposal say they will be sending a survey to every household in Solano County, and they say they will be opening offices in vallejo, fairfield and vacaville to hear from residents about their opinions on this project. Time now is 717. Not sure if were going to have bright blue clear skies like we saw in that last picture. Steve paulson, at least not in oakland for a little bit, but some improvements on the way, right. The high mid level clouds are gone. The fog will burn back and then therell be a lot more sunshine and temps which were on seasonably cool for the first and 2nd of september or starting to bump up a little bit here from 70 yesterday. Santa rosa, redwood city, livermore, san jose to upper 70s and low 80s today. I mean, it was nonstop, almost there from friday into saturday and sunday. Got a little break at times, but there was rain up in 50 and 80. Northeast california also Mendocino County lake county, northern Sacramento Valley. And it has finally calmed down as the low has moved out. But, boy, the thunderstorm activity was just going crazy on the lee side of the sierra, pretty good rain over the weekend. I went 48 hour totals, blue canyon, two thirds of an inch. Reno picked up 43 100. Caples lake, a third of an inch. South. Lake tahoe at 5100s, all quiet now, much quieter, although its cold. Theres 30s in the mountains, 50s here and 60s on the temps. A pretty good fog bank out there. But 36, 34, 36. Truckee, south. Lake tahoe. And also in the mammoth renos down to 43. A little chill in the mountain air, thats for sure. The low, though, paid its visit. Its out of the picture. Well have not much change here except more blue sky after the fog burns off low overcast, then more sunshine. Temperatures today coming up a little bit, 6270s 80s, not changing all that much until probably after wednesday. Then it do
