Can right near lake merritt gets hit by a stray bullet. Im just scary, you know, because you dont know whats going on and you dont know where the bullets are flying. And so, unfortunately, someone was hit and the victim was taken to a hospital in critical condition. Good evening, everyone. Im mike mibach and im julie julie haener. Right now, police are still investigating what led to the shooting. Ktvus amber lee went to the lake this afternoon. Amber, what did you learn from people there who were at the lake when those shots rang out . Julie neighbors tell me there was a gun battle between people in two vehicles. They say theyre shocked that it happened in the middle of the day with so many people around. You see the lamplight and the bush right in the middle. Everett, Alex Alexander points to the spot where a woman was shot while walking on the path along lake merritt in oakland. He says he looked out his balcony after he heard dozens of shots fired shortly before 1230 monday afternoon. It was scary, you know, because you dont know whats going on and you dont know where the bullets are flying. Police have confirmed that the victim is an innocent bystander caught in the crossfire. A bicyclist tells me multiple witnesses saw a gun battle between two groups on Lakeside Drive near the intersection of madison street. There were a couple of cars like two white lexuses. The guys were hanging out the windows, shooting and shooting at each other. You know, point blank range. They went on and on and on for whatever, 10 or 15 seconds. The shooting happened on the Labor Day Holiday with lots of people out enjoying the day. I ride my bike around here all the time and it kind of pisses me off and it scares me to probably walk elsewhere, which is too bad because lake merritt is part of whats great too, to about living here right . About living in this neighborhood. Ne lake merritt as the heart and soul of oakland. And to have a shooting like this happen is disturbing. One neighbor says many people in the area rushed to help the woman and says that speaks to whats good about this city. These people didnt know that the danger was past, but they were willing to put themselves at risk to help this innocent woman neighbor tell me First Responders arrived quickly and that the woman was taken to the hospital. Police say she is in critical condition. They did not release descriptions of the suspects or the vehicles involved. Julie yeah, just out for a walk in the middle of the day. So many bullet casings around. Do we know anything else about the woman who was shot . Well neighbors described her as being in her 20s to 30s, and it appeared that she was thank yo, amber. And staying in oakland, a 7eleven store in the city was robbed. And then just hours later, officers say a body was found outside the same business. Our Crime Reporter henry lee has the latest on those investigations. Oakland police gathered outside the 7eleven at fifth and international after a dead body was found on a mattress on the sidewalk early monday morning. Store yeah. Take your dead body. Very, very scared. 7eleven workers tended a customers as an Alameda County coroners van. Prepare for transport patrol officers were later joined by homicide investigator with opds criminal investigation division. Surveillance video shows some movement near the mattress at about four in the morning. Ive learned Oakland Police are investigating whether the body was dumped at the scene around that time. Hours later, after the body was removed. Shoes, bags and a baseball cap and a coroners tarp were left behind. This wasnt the only activity at the 7eleven where store employee sagar sagar on the job for only four months was trying to get over the stress of being robbed. You have last night. No missing sleep. Very scared at about 610 sunday night, this honda accord backs into a space outside for men run out. They rush into the store and cleaned it out of nearly all its cigarets and tobacco, worth about 10,000. Here you can see one robber take the entire Cash Register with about 1,000 inside. After only about a minute in the store, they take off the back to back visits by Oakland Police rattled store employees but were welcomed by a resident across the street. We need the police. Oakland can be a tough town and theyre doing their job and good. Im glad theyre here in oakland. Henry lee, ktvu fox two news. Now to san jose where police say a teenager driving a stolen vehicle has been arrested after hitting and killing a man who was on a sidewalk. This crash happened right near the intersection of winchester boulevard and walgrove way south of 280, early yesterday morning. Police say the teen was driving a stolen suv when the vehicle went off the roadway and then struck and killed the man. Officers say this is the 19th pedestrian death in san jose so far this year. The victim of a hit and run in Sonoma County has been identified. And 18 year old Oswaldo Cardenas junior was walking with friends near river road and rio vista in forestville when he was hit august 27th. The chp says the suspect left the scene in a buick enclave. The suv was found before dawn on wednesday after it had been set on fire near santa rosa. The vehicle was registered to 35 year old alyssa whitten, who has since been arrested, and uncle of the victim, telling ktvu cardenas was a happy teenager and that the family was quite upset that the suv had been set on fire in an attempt to cover up the crash. The westbound lanes of interstate 80 between interstate 780 in vallejo and highway four in hercules are back open tonight. This comes after caltrans workers spent several days finishing the final phase of a major repaving project. Ktvu is Jana Katsuyama was on the highway and drove behind the chp as officers reopened i80. Gianna joins us now live from the carquinez bridge toll plaza where the roadway reopened just in time for holiday travelers who were returning home. Gianna. It did. Julie a little bit of caltrans is delivering on a labor day surprise. If you take a look behind me, this was supposed to be closed until tomorrow morning but it is back open and thats a big relief for drivers who now do not have to take that detour to the benicia bridge. An exciting sight for drivers monday as the chp moved into position to finally reopen westbound i80 between vallejo and hercules one day. Early crews came through pulling up the cones and roadblocks, signs and then the chp began allowing traffic back on the highway. A slow rolling escort to keep the reopen safe. Just a little before 5 p. M. Instead of Tuesday Morning at 5 a. M, which is excellent for the commute. This this route handles about 50,000 vehicles per day and Labor Day Weekend coming back is heavily trafficked. Caltrans says crews worked nonstop since the westbound lanes shut down at 9 p. M. Thursday. A big resurfacing project that stretched some three miles. We were able to do it because we had crews working around the clock, 12 hour shifts in order to get the work. Thats awesome. Theyre working. Theyre kicking butt. Jessica ray is a vallejo. Was happy to hear about the early opening. She says her husband was caught in the detour delays all weekend. I think hes been like at least 20 minutes late to work each day. Other drivers were also relieved that the drive will be shorter and smoother. I am living in vallejo. What was that . Yeah, i am living in vallejo. My company is in benicia. Normally it takes 15 minutes when you use the highway, but last time i spent two hours along with repaving and landscape shaping, caltrans was also able to repair the lights that had been out due to a fire three years ago because the bridge was out of service. Our Electrical Maintenance teams went in and they literally went to every single light bulb on that bridge and replaced the fixtures. The beautiful lights restore poured on the span named after alfred zampa, an ironworker who worked on the Golden Gate Bridge and survived a fall. His grandson was there to see it. On this labor day. My gramps was a tough dude, very proud. Caltrans says they appreciate everyones patience and understanding during the holiday closure. This particular paving project is able to last up to 40 years because its a continuous concrete pour. So we wont be back here for a while. All right. And back here live, you can see those beautiful lights on the zampa span of the carquinas bridge. Again they had to replace those because of damage due to a fire some three years ago. Now there is one note. They finished this whole span of i80, but district three, which is from sacramento to the nevada border, well, there are about five projects that need to be completed there. So anyone heading to tahoe or up to truckee be prepared because there are still some Construction Projects to be done on i80 a little bit further down the road. Yeah, well, any project that gets done a little bit ahead of time, always good news. Jana katsuyama reporting at the carquinez bridge toll plaza. Thanks, gianna. Dollar by dollar a nine cent by cent 100. Leonardo and Nicolo Felice close in on their goal. Now were at 200 across the bay area fundraiser for lahaina devastated last month by wildfires continuing to pop up. When i saw the video of when it got burnt down my heart, just like bam. It just ten and 13. These two brothers from san mateo, perhaps among the youngest, to spearhead a campaign to help out, move to do something for kids just like them on the island. After visiting lahaina in june and then watching it burn down, i felt really bad and telling their parents they wanted to part with their toys to do it. Some of them werent as hard to get rid of, but there were a couple of them that i really like kind of felt bad about giving away. Its overwhelming to watch them want to give back. And i think they were really devastated by seeing the homes destroyed, knowing that children lived there, that possibly they met these children. Some of the money raised through a garage sale. The rest online through a gofundme page. Their original goal, 1000 hundred dollars, 1000 at last count, raising 1,539. 25. Today crews work to contain a diesel and oil spill from a sunken tugboat in the delta. The Sheriffs Department warned boaters to stay away from the empire tract area of the waterway near herman and Helens Marina where the submerged boat was located. Deputies say their boating safety unit was working with other agencies, including state fish and wildlife and the coast guard, to contain the spill. The coast guard says the boat leaked some 600 gallons of oil and a thousand gallons of diesel. The department of wildlife spill prevention and Response Team says at this point it did not observe any impacts to wildlife due to the spill. And the coast guard says it did appear that the vessel had been there for quite some time. And deputies say they believe the boat started to sink last night. No reports of any injuries. All right. A pretty mild a cool weekend around here. And the week is going to follow suit. This is the model. This is right now, essentially. And theres the jet stream. And you see this. I think you can see this trough right here. So that trough and then this associated shortwave trough are going to kind of ride this trough is going to hang. And then these shortwaves are going to ride on into it the next couple of days. And that sets us up with a mild weather pattern right through to pretty much this week. So as we push into tuesday, it reconfigures a little, but look at that. See just a little deeper trough. Thats why its not going to be hot. And then we go into thursday. I just picked a random time, but you can see here still, were in the troughing pattern. Then we go to friday. Still a bit of a trough here. It does change up late in the weekend. Not saturday, but sunday. You see things starting to go this way. So thats a little bit more up pretty much sunday and monday a little bit subtle. I know. I just want you to see how subtle the changes are. But the idea that were into this mild cool weather pattern for a while, at least for this week, and some indications are that next month could be pretty mild to cool, too. So well see. But in the meantime, what we had today is what you get tomorrow. We will see changes towards the end of the weekend. Ill have that when i see you back here. Or else. Hey, now youre an all star.
