This was a unique situation because rescuers didnt have a driver or any passengers to ask about the nature of the injuries or how the victim became to be. Now the woman is being treated for critical injuries once again. Police say the driver who first hit her left the scene. Officers are actively looking for both the driver and the car. And ktvu zac sos has more on what may have sparked that fire. I look out the window expecting to see blue skies and all this and all i saw was brown. Fred barcelo coming face to face with a fast moving grass fire below his east oakland home monday afternoon. The weeds were up and it just engulfed the entire lot and burned the fences down next door on outlook avenue, cheverie chambers, who runs a home for people with developmental disabilities. The main thing is getting them out once everyone was out, he says, he glanced back at his neighbors home. A big flames. It was a big flame in the attic. Firefighters arriving within minutes. It was moving pretty quick. It moved with this 2 to 3 acres in a matter of a couple of minutes. It spreads very fast when the grass is dry like this. Crews immediately working to put out the flame on barcelos roof while others made sure the fire didnt spread to nearby homes. You know, you start catching a couple houses, things can grow very rapidly down the hill. One homeowner trying to spray back the flames with a garden hose. When i saw that it was getting close to the tree, thats when i just started packing stuff in the car and i left. Firefighters able to keep the flames away from every home in the neighborhood except for one. Theres a displaced Family Member that were going to give Financial Assistance and blankets and toiletries to barcelos home badly damaged. I just finished a landscaping and you know, over 60,000 in here. Im back to dealing with the living room. Neighbors now wondering if landscapers may have played a part in sparking the blaze. They got a crew down here. Three men, crew cutting the weeds. I saw a couple of guys with with weed is and it looked like a more that was running out the back and oakland fire confirming that there were landscapers in the area of where that fire started due to mitigation work at the time. Now thats west of highway 101 between san rafael and novato. Smoke may be visible from both cities. The controlled burn is meant to clear dry brush in the area to prevent fires. All right, pam, time is 410. You love the weather. Yesterday day i did. Steve more beautiful weather ahead. Yes, a little warmer bumping up a little bit, but yes, still nice today, although i think well add about 3 to 5 degrees on the highs that a system clipped the Pacific Northwest in the northern part of the state. If you saw a few high clouds, thats what it was. But it pushed off towards the east and the flow coming around that is out of the north. So there is a northerly breeze up in the hills, not too bad at the surface, but fog is the big story here. Petaluma zero visibility. Novato a mile and a half Half Moon Bay, a mile and three quarters. So the bases of that fog that low over cast is coming down as the high builds in 40s 50s on the temps 49 marshall 50 and 40. In santa rosa 48 excuse me, 51. Menlo park, also Mountain View in there. Berkeleys at 51 napa airport. So there are some cool lows a lot of 40s again to the north. Marin county all the way up to novato as well. Sebastopol, windsor, healdsburg in there, middletown, sonoma, all in the 40s. Although it does appear that we are running a little warmer than yesterday at this time. 34 though. Truckee, South Lake Tahoe 50s up and down the coast. Monterey Santa Barbara system has pushed off. Our big system is now visiting the inner mountain region, the rockies. And that high is building in. Thats a big high and thats going to allow temperatures to warm up. So not as much fog today. And what is there is more in the fog category instead of the low overcast. So sunny and warmer, a little northerly breeze, 60s, 70s and 80s, you guys. All right. Thank you, steve. Theres a new push in san jose to declare an emergency over homeless ness. Coming up, we hear from the mayor about what that could do for the city. During the past two weeks, the number of positive covid cases dropped from 10. 8 to 9. 4. And the number of covid hospitalizations dropped by 13. Now, medical experts say closer to the holidays, we may see another covid surge, but they say that could be less. And if everyone gets the new Covid Vaccine, california doctors who share false information about covid to patients will no longer face any punishment under state law. A law that went into effect in january would have officially labeled that physician misconduct, but it was blocked by a judge earlier this year. And now now it has officially been repealed. Critics say that law was a violation of free speech. Our time now for 16. How did you sleep last night . Nutrition is, say if you had a midnight snack, it could have disrupted the quality of your sleep. They say there are three foods you should not eat before you go to bed. Pay attention, pam. Dark chocolate, spicy foods and red meat. Dark chocolate has caffeine in it, so it will give you a sugar rush. The spicy foods that can raise your body temperature, making it harder to sleep. It also give you heartburn or indigestion. Iron and meat is just hard to digest. It can make you feel sluggish now. The foods you should eat include nuts, whole wheat toast and avocados and drink decaffeinated drinks like tea. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It is a time devoted to educating everyone about the disease. More than 240,000 cases of Breast Cancer are diagnosed in the us each year and each year there are more than 42,000 deaths nationwide from Breast Cancer. Doctors say mammograms remain a critical tool for diagnosis. Sometimes it can be detected. You can actually detect a cancer three years before it is felt on an exam. Mammography has helped reduce Breast Cancer mortality in the us by nearly 40 since 1990. Now, the American Cancer Society recommends that women with average cancer risk should start getting yearly mammograms at the age of 45 and then continue through age 54. At 55 years old, they can switch to screening every two years. Well october is also dyslexia Awareness Month and a San Francisco man launched a nationwide postcard project that will debut on capitol hill october 17th. And ktvu Jana Katsuyama tells us more each one is just a whole different level of expression. If a picture postcard is worth a thousand words, gil gershon is awash in a wealth of pages that speak volumes. So we have over 1000 postcards to date, a thousand from from over 30 schools from around the country. Growing up, gershony felt the frustration first hand of seeing words on the page as a puzzle struggling to read with dyslexia. And so this year, he asked others to write themselves a dear dyslexic , a postcard expressing what dyslexia means to them with art and a word. To me, dyslexia is mysterious. Marin samuels is a sixth grader at Northbridge Academy in mill valley, which has 82 students with dyslexia participating in the project. Their feelings and their art turning blank pages into open books, learn ing that shortcomings can also be superpowers. Now that i know things like that, i feel proud and i feel more comfortable being like, oh yeah, i have dyslexia. The postcard project is including everyone from students to celebrities, even bestselling author dave pilkey sent a postcard of his famous pup dogman. This is an original one that he sent to us and we just opened envelope and i was just my jaw just dropped. I was like, whoa oh. So awesome art and words coming together and opening new doors all the images are different. And its it really touched me so deeply. And in putting those feelings to paper, Something Else magical happened. And the postcards words strung together into a powerful poem always here. This ocean of words is always here. The fog i am soggy, frustrated. Then i accomplished and clear in my frozen moments. I cling to a particle of dust and trust in my ability as they crystallize and form snowflakes. My beautiful striving self in mill valley. Jana katsuyama ktvu fox two news. Wow very interesting. Thank you, jana. All right. Time now is 420. We go back over to Steve Paulson for our forecast. A warmer, warmer, warmer. You two started a teeny bit yesterday. Not so much the coast, but inland temps bumped up, but theyre right there in the comfort zone.
