Nothings ever done about it. Now our goal is to significantly reduce this and get this problem under control so that people can come to the city and feel like they dont have to worry about their car getting broken into. On september 28th, Oakland Police caught seven people in the act on three separate occasions recovering three catalytic converters, two firearms and personal property. We must and that we will do more to hold accountable those individuals behind these crimes. In one of the incidents, the suspects rammed a stolen car into a Police Cruiser trying to escape the individuals involved in auto burglaries have become extremely brazen in like as you can see from this operation, theyre carrying guns and photos sent to us from viewers showing smashed windows and stolen parts. We have car alarm systems. We have the clubs on our cars. All of us use them. But its not enough. The couple who sent us this video from oakland say they waited on the phone for 12 minutes, calling 911 before hanging up. All while thieves checked for unlocked car doors. Were doing everything we can to make sure that people can get through to us when they find themselves in these situations. Oakland pd funded six Police Academies this year to help with low staffing recently instated foot patrol officers. And as long as city council approves, well have 300 new license plate readers to be installed within the next six weeks. Police asking people not to engage with dangerous thieves in the act. Its just not worth it. Now, six of the seven people were charged by the district attorney, and while oakland officers will be regularly conducting these undercover operations, as chief jones didnt say exactly how often crystal bailey, ktvu, fox two news. Crystal thank you. There has not been a lot of progress in the search for oaklands next police chief. Mayor shengtao still has not received a list of chief candidate names from the citys Police Commission. Just last week its process of selecting candidates stalled over a recommendation to reinstate former chief lauren armstrong. We spoke with the mayor this morning and she says she has heard that the commission is getting close to the phase when it will give her a list of three names as im hopeful that by the end of the year, ill get the top three names so that we can actually start the interview process from the mayors office. I havent heard anything. No lists have been shown to me quite yet because thats not the process. And so im waiting patiently for the Police Commission to do their job. The Police Commission will attempt another vote on the recommendation to reinstate armstrong during its next meeting on october 12th. It expects to provide a final list of candidates to the mayor the following week. We are following the latest developments in washington, where today was a historic day in both chambers of congress. Kevin mccarthy became the first speaker of the house in American History to be voted out of the job. And in the senate, Laphonza Butler was sworn in as californias newest senator. She becomes the third black female senator in history and the first lgbt senator from california. Butler is also the only black woman currently serving in the us senate. Senator or senator butler comes to the position with a lot of experience in political organizing and union building. As ktvu political reporter greg lee tells us plenty of questions are now circling about whether she may intend to run for election next year. An historic moment on the floor of the us senate. I will congratulate us Vice President kamala harris, the first black woman to represent california in the upper chamber, swearing in the second black woman in the role. Laphonza butler. Its a great day for californians. Its a great day for democrats. Thats its a great day for black women. I know that our old colleague is looking down at this moment with pride. And now that her seat is in good hands, Governor Newsom appointed butler to finish the term of the late senator Dianne Feinstein, following through on a promise to pick a black woman. There are so many barriers that have existed to prevent lgbt folks and black folks and others from entering the most exclusive halls of power in the senate was one of those. After the moment on the floor, she took the oath on her personal bible held by her wife, nikki lee. Butler is the first openly lgbtq person to represent california in the senate and the first black lesbian to serve in congress. Today, the senate takes another step towards fully reflecting our vibrant democracy working people, labor, of course, lgbt rights, lgbtq rights. Shes a mom. You know, im excited for our state. Debbie mesloh has known butler since 2010, when they worked together on vp harriss California Attorney general win. She says butler will bring to the job her experience his as a political consultant, labor leader and supporter of abortion rights. Laphonza has been there. Laphonza fought for people and shes not going to stop that. Going into the senate. Thats just going to give her more of a platform to be able to get things done. Butlers never held Elective Office and faced immediate criticism for currently living in maryland. Her staff says shes since reregistered to vote in california. The question remains will she run for a full term next year . Her office said this week. Laphonza is focused on respecting and honoring senator feinsteins legacy and getting ready to serve the people of california in the senate. Her entry would complicate an already crowded field. We plan to partner with senator butler and we plan to continue backing barbara lee for senate think. I think we can do both. No, i dont believe she should. Each one putting together a Viable Campaign and to be airdrop wrapped into this is simply not fair. And by the way, i dont think many people know her. Greg lee, ktvu fox two news. The Funeral Service for senator Dianne Feinstein will take place thursday at 1 p. M. On the front steps of San Francisco city hall. There will be standing room in Civic Center Plaza and the service will be streamed live tomorrow. The senator will lie in state inside the rotunda of city hall and the public is invited to pay their respects from 9 a. M. To 7 p. M. Well, there are plenty of questions about what happens next now that Kevin Mccarthy has been removed from his post. Fox is Rebecca Castro joins us live tonight from washington. And rebecca, we are hearing now from the former House Speaker for the very first time. How is he reacting . Well, mike, julie, this is an outcome even Kevin Mccarthy himself did not see coming. He was optimistic heading into the house floor this afternoon, telling reporters he was confident hed still be speaker at the end of the night. But in a historic twist, he was kicked out of his chair with republicans now scrambling to find a new leader. I do not regret, negotiate ing our government is designed to find compromise. I dont regret it. My efforts to build coalitions and find solutions. I was raised to solve problems, not create them. So i may have lost a vote today, but as i walk out of this chamber, i feel fortunate to have served the american people. I leave the speakership with a sense of pride, accomplishment and yes, optimism. North carolina congressman Patrick Mchenry will temporarily lead the house until a new speaker is elected. Currently House Republicans and democrats are meeting separately to discuss their picks. Mccarthy says he will not seek the speaker seat again, but its unlikely well see a republican jumping to run for the position over 200 house members voted in support of mccarthy, so its more likely someone will need to be tapped to run. And if we remember, it took five days in 15 round of votes for mccarthy to be elected. So another long haul speakership campaign is expected here. Mike and julie. So, rebecca, what are you hearing about a vote for the new speaker . Any word yet when that will happen in so were not hearing it will be happening anytime soon. We are starting to hear, though, some names being considered. House majority leader steve scalise, hes the number two republican in the house. So his name is, of course, being thrown around. He would be considered the natural successor, but at least to congress. Men are calling for former President Donald Trump to be speaker, which sounds far fetched, but its actually not impossible because the speaker doesnt have to be a member of congress. Its. All right. Rebecca castro, live for us tonight in washington, dc. Rebecca thank you. Tens of thousands of kaiser workers are preparing to walk off the job tomorrow. Coming up, the implications for patients nationwide. The snow Glen School District president is facing intense threats after a contested board decision. His reaction to the blowback and a typical fall day out there, the sun getting ready to set. Not much fog at the coast. Its warmer. Its going to be warmer. The next couple of days. Authorities also say another vehicle struck a pedestrian before the woman became trapped underneath the robotaxi. Tonight, the Autonomous Car company is defending itself. Ktvu allie rasmus explains the key role dashcam video will have in this investigation. When San Francisco firefighters first arrived at the crash scene at fifth and market last night, they found a woman pinned underneath the axle of a selfdriving crews car. There was no one else around, so initially it appeared as though the selfdriving car was the only vehicle involved in this unique situation. We had no driver or passengers, nor any witnesses on the sidewalk to tell us how long she had been beneath the vehicle, what i can say is that rescuers responded within 60s from the initial dispatch, but overnight, representatives from cruise, the company that operates the Autonomous Car, said they looked at that cars dash cam video, which gives a different view. The company says that video clearly shows another car involved in the collision. Cruise shared that video with ktvu for our viewing purposes only, theyre not releasing it publicly. In it, we did see a dark colored sedan driving alongside the cruise car. Both cars appeared to have a green light as the woman tries to cross the street into oncoming traffic. In the video, we see the dark colored sedan hit the woman first. The impact throws her into the path of the selfdriving car and she becomes pinned underneath it. That dark colored sedan was gone by the time firefighter arrived. Were looking to identify the driver as well as locate the vehicle. In a statement this morning, San Francisco police acknowledged the second vehicle, but stopped short of calling this a hit and run, saying, quote, we believe another vehicle that was not an Autonomous Vehicle may have been initially involved in the collision, but the vehicle or driver were not present at the scene during our investigation, end quote. Authorities arent sharing any information this morning about the woman who was struck, but firefighters say she suffered multiple traumatic injuries in the collision. Cruise says it will not make that video or any still pictures from it. Public the company says it will only share that dash cam video with investigators and said, quote, our heartfelt concern and focus is the wellbeing of the person who is injured and were actively working with police to help identify the responsible driver, end quote. San Francisco Police want the publics help with this investigation. Theyre asking anyone who may have Surveillance Video from their home or business in the area or anyone who witnessed the crash at market. And fifth, to come forward and help. Allie rasmus, ktvu, fox two news and the woman pinned underneath the car was taken to the hospital with critical injuries and update on her condition has not been released. The person who posted the video said it happened right near pier 39 and public works confirmed this was during an enforcement operation on unlicensed vending on San Francisco public works, saying in a statement, while we are still looking into what led up to the moment and the events that preceded, we strive to treat members of the public with respect during permit enforcement operations. Starbucks says that it regularly evaluates store performance and retail footprint. All employees will be offered the chance to transfer to a different location. Starbucks also points out that it has recently opened or reopened three other locations downtown and has renovated for other cafes in the city. All right. A Beautiful Day yet again today. Sun setting a little earlier as we get into october here, its fall. It feels like fall. This weather is exactly what you would expect. Temperatures above the average by a few degrees, pretty dry out there for the most part, but still all in not in record setting area. So were not looking at any red flag warnings as of yet or any kind of thing, any kind of fire weather advisories is what im getting at. That could change. But right now, the models, everythings kind of kind of staying below criteria for all that stuff. But still, fire danger is high and it will get its going to peak temperatures. Temperatures will peak probably on friday in a little bit into saturday. And that will set us up with the increased fire danger, especially as we get into saturday. And friday, friday and saturday, because down the road, you get day after day after day of dry, warm, dry, warm, dry, warm fuels, dry out. And once the fuels dry out and certainly the humidity will drop down, you start to get into these these thresholds where the advisories become a thing. Right now, it looks like were going to stay above those, but well keep an eye on these. Are the highs from today, warmer by a good five, six, seven degrees in some places tomorrow. I think tomorrow well see a couple of low 90s in the north and the Northeast Bay and everybody else kind of mid 80s upper 80s. And were going to hover there now as we go. Were going to warm up a little bit. Were going to hover in the low to mid 90s as we go into th
