Theres no fog out there at all at all. So 50s on the temps right now and if youre looking for warmer temps theyre on their way. Theres nothing out there. Topping our news this morning, more than 70,000 Kaiser Permanente workers here in the bay area and in several other states are expected to go on strike and hit the picket lines beginning at 6 00 this morning. Representatives from eight kaiser unions have told ktvu the strike will start and will continue through saturday. Contract talks have stalled over issues that include Staffing Shortages, pay raises and medical care for retired kaiser employees and Union Leaders say kaiser has refused to listen to the concerns of employees, as kaiser has not. You know, the executives have not listened to the frontline members, the frontline employees about this staffing crisis. And until they can, you know, come to the table at good faith and bargain with the rank and file members regarding this staffing crisis, we will not they it will not turn we will be striking tomorrow. Now, the workers say they would end the strike if kaiser would keep negotiating and work out a deal. Also, they say if by this weekend theres still stalled and at an impasse , the strike may be extended. And kaiser says some Patient Services may be affected by this strike, including pharmacies. The kaiser released this statement, quote, our goal is to reach a fair and equitable agreement that strengthens Kaiser Permanente as a best place to work and ensures that the high quality care our members expect from us remains affordable and easy to access. Its our time now. 403 in San Francisco, starbucks now shutting down several stores. Heres a look at which cafes will be closed. The store locations are mainly in the financial district as well as one location in nob hill. Ktvu is amber lee talked to starbucks customers and the owner of a coffee shop who used to work for starbucks. This starbucks at the corner of mission and main in San Franciscos financial district is the go to spot for people who work in the area. I come twice a day in the morning and right now, yeah, its yeah, its just really nice to be able to walk across the street. But as of october 22nd, seven locations, including this one, will be closed most are concentrated in the downtown financial district area in a written statement, a starbucks spokesperson said in part, each year as a standard course of business, we evaluate the store portfolio to determine where we can best meet our community and customers needs. Starbucks, at least from what i know, has always acted very quickly in shifting business strategies. If somethings not working, theyre like gone. Aiden compton tells me he was store manager for the starbucks on stockton and sutter streets before opening up his own coffee houses in the north beach neighborhood and on fillmore street. He says starbucks has a lot of stores that are no longer generating the business they did before the pandemic. But as soon as downtown cleared out, you know, business dried up for everybody. Starbucks says it is, quote, reevaluating our footprint, including adding and reopening some stores. It had closed, including this one at powell and ofarrell at union square. Theres more variety here, so people have more to choose from. Vasconia reyes is the former executive director of the fillmore and west portal merchants associations. He says business closures are never good, but that starbucks is adjusting to changing consumer trends. The popularity of other types of beverage shops are likely a factor for the emergence of the variety of boba shops that we see in the marketplace right now is a big reason for the closure of some of these mainstream coffee shops like starbucks in San Francisco. A lot of things are closing due to the economy due to a lot of issues that are going with the city. So i mean, im not surprised. Starbucks says no workers will lose their jobs, that all employees affected by the closures will have the opportunity to transfer to another store in San Francisco, amber lee, ktvu fox two news. All right, amber, thank you. Times 405 in the north bay. A starbucks store there just voted to form a union at the store in the Solano Town Center in fairfield. Employees voted 14 to 2 to join the starbucks workers united. And this is now the 29th california starbucks store to unionize. The union says since december of 2021, more than 360 Starbucks Stores in 41 states and the district of columbia have successfully formed unions in the past. Starbucks has said the Company Supports its employee labor movements at cal State University. Student assistants announced they will vote on unionizing the state Public Employment board has ruled there is enough support to hold an election. Now the student assistants will vote on whether to join the California State University employees union. Organizers say most of those workers make minimum wage, have no sick time and no Health Insurance because the csu limits student assistance to working 20 hours a week. Ive also have to work other jobs off campus. Uh, over my six years of working as a student assistant, and ive held to some times three jobs at once. Now, the University System has not commented on the announcement. There are 19,000 student assistants working across cal states 23 campuses so far, theres no date set for a vote. Our time now, 407 will later this morning. Fema will be testing the nationwide alert system and theyll be testing it on every tv and radio and cell phone in the country. That test will take place about 1120 this morning. Our time, tvs and radios will play that tone for about a minute. If you get the alert on your phone, itll come in as a text message with a vibration tone and a tone. This is the seventh nationwide Emergency Alert system test. Fema says the purpose is to make sure these systems are an effective way of warning the public about emergencies, especially early on the national level. Starting today, you can board the ships docked along San Francisco shoreline for fleet week. The tours are all free. They begin at 10 00 this morning at piers, 30 and 32 ships on display this week include an amphibious transport dock and a guided missile destroyer. Our visitors can also meet sailors and see their day to day routines. You dont have to preregister for the tours. But police have not given much information about them in investigators found dorm windows that were shattered by bullets at the scene. Students had just wrapped up a homecoming event on the campus when gunfire was heard. I just saw everybody running and heard the shots going off. And then i just just had a fight or flight instinct. We all tried to just get out of the way. Everybody tried to get out and lay down and run whatever you could. A swat team was called in. Students were told to shelter in place for hours. So far, no suspects were found and no arrests have been made. School at Morgan Morgan state has been canceled for today. Two people have been arrested in Contra Costa County for the murder of a two year old. The Sheriffs Office responded to a report monday night of a two year old drowning in a bathtub in rodeo. The toddler was taken to the hospital where he later died. Deputies say 21 year old Tyshawn Haywood and 22 year old destiny dabo were booked in the martinez detention facility in connection to the drowning. Police say they are each being held on 1 million bail. Our time now for 15 in san jose. We now know the names of the two Young Children who drowned at a home daycare. Police say the two who died were Payton Alexander cobb of hollister and lillian hannon of san jose. Both children were only one year old. A third child has injuries that are considered nonlife threatening. The police say the three children were found in an uncovered backyard Swimming Pool surrounded by a tall metal fence. Somehow along the way, there are ways that those doors opened up, whether or not that was a juveniles themselves, whether it was some other method. Were still looking into that. Nearly 24 hours after this incident. All of us are are in shock. Feeling the trauma now, its still not clear right now how many caregivers were on duty at the time and where they were when the children fell into that pool. Authorities havent said yet if criminal charges may be filed. And the san jose police, the santa clara das office and the department of family and Childrens Services are jointly investigating the drownings. Our time is 416. The recent poll suggests that crime is the reason people are just staying away from some downtown areas. But as ktvu Lamonica Peters reports, its not crime thats keeping people from visiting downtown san jose Hassan Pathan says this is his first time eating at city fish on east santa clara street. I mean, i know a lot of places have closed that we used to come here before, like four years ago. So i can see why. But theres still a lot of places that people havent discovered. Pathan and his friends say they dont worry much about safety, but traffic, parking and expenses may keep them from going downtown. More often. Its deterred me. And i understand that because a lot of businesses took a hit because of the pandemic visit. Visit san jose also released a statement saying in part, attendance in our for san jose theater venues have already surpassed prepandemic levels with 160 events to go until the end of the year, according to the report. Citywide demand for hotels on the weekends is at 97 of pre pandemic levels in san jose and at 89 monday through thursday. City fish in downtown san jose says the city has been supportive and business is picking up. But he thinks its peoples perception that may be keeping them away. Lamonica rio vista leaders accused the citys lawyers of a potential conflict of interest in relation to the new city proposed for solano county. According to the chronicle, the legal team wants to represent both rio vista and california forever. The group behind the idea to create a new city. The city council has rejected the idea. All right.
