For stable an emotional tribute tonight to the late senator Dianne Feinstein. San franciscans paying their respects to the trailblazing politician as she departed city hall tonight. It was very, very breathtaking thing and very fitting for senator feinstein in a somber night in San Francisco. Good evening, everyone. Im julie julie haener. And im mike mibach. Tonight, thousands of people slowly walk through city hall to pay their respects to a native san franciscan. Dianne feinstein, ktvu is Jana Katsuyama joins us now from the city with more on the story. Jana theres been so much emotion here today, mike and julie, i want to step aside so i can show you whats happening right now. There was just a concert that got finished up around the corner, but here at city hall, you can see that they have been making preparations for tomorrows Memorial Service. The Mayors Office said due to security reasons, it will no longer be open to the public. So the feinstein family asked that the doors to city hall remain open an extra hour until 8 00 to allow everyone who waited in line a chance to pay their respects for one final time. Dianne feinstein, californias late senator San Franciscos former mayor and supervisor, left San Francisco city hall where she started her career more than 50 years ago in honor guard escorted her past family and friends wednesday evening. Beautiful music sung from the heart, filled the rotunda where senator feinstein lay in state all day. The San Francisco gay mens chorus serenading her as her daughter granddaughter and other family and friends stood near her flag draped casket. San franciscos mayor london breed and speaker emerita nancy pelosi were also there by the familys side. Its been a very emotional day for her family, for so many people who have told me the stories of where they were or their various experiences of the senator, weve seen people walk up and were in tears. You could tell there was a lot of emotion here today. She knew her purpose and she would not be. She did things on her own terms, but she always did them with gentleness , a line of people all day paying their respects, moved past the casket. It was, you know, surreal because the chorus has been linked to her since the day it went public. Now, to come full circle, at the end of her public career here is just its hard to its hard to explain. On the second floor, flowers surrounded the statue that captured the smiling face of a younger Dianne Feinstein, who had walked the halls as a member of the board of supervisors from 1970 to 1978. And then as mayor from 1978 to 1988, outside city hall. The line of people who came from around the bay area wrapped down the street and around the block. Shes just done so much that this is a rare opportunity to get to pay respects to somebody whos been so impactful. She was a great leader, a tremendous respect for her. She was also a fighter. She fought for human rights and i respect that. I think if she were here and to see this, it would it would make it would warm her heart. And so many dignitaries, including dr. Anthony fauci, were here today to honor her as she lay in state in the south like court. People waited to write messages. Thousands of pages that will be put into a book for feinstein family. And back out here live again. You can see city hall being prepared for the Memorial Service tomorrow. We understand from the mayor that she got notice that the Vice President is going to be here, as well as a number of senate chairs and other members from congress, including perhaps some republicans from across the aisle who were her friends and who also respected the work that she did over the many years. Of course, we will be having that live tomorrow. And so many people will be able to watch it as well online streaming, mike and inspiring life and career to so many out there. Jana katsuyama live in San Francisco. Gianna thank you. And again, be sure to join us tomorrow as the bay area and really the nation bids a final farewell to Dianne Feinstein. Were constantly short staffed and were constantly having to close rooms, so theres times where theres not enough staff to fill in all the operating rooms so that we delay it. So its delayed patient care. The staffing crisis is very serious and i have to listen to them tell me they think theyre going to lose a foot. They think they have diabetes or they think theyre going to die before a patient, before theyre able to see a doctor. Its really sad. And they say the staffing crisis worsened after the pandemic. Many people left the medical field. All of us frontline workers kept coming to our executives and letting them know we need these positions back filled. We need them filled again. But they were not listening to us. A spokesperson for Kaiser Permanente says management and Coalition Union representatives are still at the bargaining table with progress made and some agreements reached on several specific proposals late tuesday. Kaiser says, quote, we remain committed to reaching a new agreement that continues to provide our employees with market leading wages excellent benefits, generous Retirement Income plans and valuable professional Development Opportunity 80s. I totally respect the workers rights to make sure that they have a voice and to bargain in good faith and i continue to encourage that. Both sides come together and have those conversations and then find a resolution. Im very hopeful because i want my patients taken care of. Late today, kaiser updated us on their offers to date to address the unions priorities, including across the board wage increases in all markets over the next four years. Theyre also offering minimum wages of 23 an hour in california and 21 an hour in markets outside of california. The entire project is a 16 mile extension from fremont to santa clara with six stations and a tunnel through downtown san jose and a Maintenance Facility at the end of the line. Vta general manager and ceo Carolyn Ganot says barts phase two expansion from berryessa to santa clara is scheduled for completion by 2036. Ten years later than expected. Although the project will cost an additional 2. 9 billion, ganot says that money has already been accounted for despite this increase, the new figure remains within our funding plan due to strong support by locally supported sales tax measures and state and federal sources. Ganot says project adjustments, inflation and Rising Interest Rates are major factors in the delay. San jose mayor matt marin also weighed in on the delay, saying on bart to Silicon Valley is happening and vta and its contractors will have to live within their means to get it done. We are not going back to the voters on this one. This area has enough money to pay for improve our lives, right . So they should make our way to make it happen even with vtas announcement of a delay in added cost, some people we spoke to in santa clara are still looking ahead to the benefits of having a bart station nearby. I know a lot of students do get internships like in the bay area especially, and i know its like really expensive for transportation and just having a car on campus.
