Also, we have that crash on 92 near pilarcitos creek. If youre getting out of Half Moon Bay or going into it, the 92 is going to be extra slow. Oaklands been without a permanent chief for more than a year now. Ktvu james torres is live in oakland with what the mayor says is the new chiefs first order of business. James gasia. This morning, well be welcoming Oakland Police chief, the newest chief, Floyd Mitchell, who comes to us after serving as police chief from lubbock, texas. The Mayors Office reports hes been part of Law Enforcement for more than 30 years. Chief mitchell was mayor shang taos final decision for the job. Thats after about a year long search to replace former chief leronne armstrong. Mayor tao fired armstrong last year after reports said the former chief did not properly handle cases of misconduct within the Police Department. The mayor has since said his attitude during conversations about that misconduct made her less confident that he could do the job. Armstrong has since filed a lawsuit against the city, the new chief coming in at a time when crime and Public Safety has been a wide concern for the city of oakland. The Mayors Office, though, is reporting assaults, homicides and burglaries are all trending down and robberies are still on the rise. We spoke to the mayor last week who says while today is the chiefs First Official day in office, hes been preparing for weeks. Hes been working closely with chief ellison, interim chief ellison and assistant chief tony jones. Really learning the ropes of all of the Different Things that were doing here, the different strategies. Over the weekend, chief mitchell attended the Graduation Ceremony of the latest police academy, 12 more officers as a result, are now added to the police force, according to the city. That brings the tally up to. 716 sworn officers in the city of oakland, which is about where the budget allocates for now. When chief mitchell was first hired, he put out a statement in print saying his focus was, quote, to promote safety, prevent crime and pursue justice. Family members and friends in oakland mourning the loss of two longtime east bay political leaders killed over the weekend in a car crash. Community members gathered at lake merritt amphitheater remembering the lives of peggy moore and her wife, hope wood. They were killed friday night in a crash in san diego county. Both built solid ties in oakland and beyond, working with former president barack obama advising former oakland mayor libby schaaf, even starting their own Political Consulting firm. At the candlelight vigil, former colleagues talked about their work and their kindness came out to take care of each other, talk to each other and remember their love and their contributions that they made to all of us individually, but also to the city. Peggy moore was 60 years old. Her wife hope was 48. Efforts are underway to make new plans for the oakland waterfront. Now that the as ballpark deal has fallen apart, city leaders have struggled for years to create a Long Term Development plan for Jack London Square and the port of oakland. The as decision to move to las vegas has killed a plan to build a new ballpark and thousands of waterfront homes at howard terminal, now, city leaders are exploring new Development Options for the area. Those plans are likely to encounter a new round of legal regulatory and environmental hurdles. Happening today, Rideshare Companies uber and lyft are going on trial in massachusetts. That states attorney general is asking the judge to rule that rideshare drivers are employees under state law, not independent contractors. The judge rules against the Rideshare Companies, drivers would be entitled to benefits. The Rideshare Companies say if the judge rules against them, they may be forced to cut or cease operations in the state. California courts made a ruling on a similar case last year, allowing Rideshare Companies to continue to treat their drivers here as independent contractors. Time now. 706 protesters gathered in palo alto on mothers day, putting a spotlight on the mothers and their babies suffering in gaza. At the corner of El Camino Real and embarcadero road, people gathered at the weekly vigil for gaza, a special focus on what they say mothers there in gaza are going through. Caltrans reopened eastbound highway 37 last night, ten hours earlier than expected, easing this mornings commute in sonoma and solano counties. Work crews repaving a seven mile long stretch of the roadway. The last repavement work will happen next weekend on 37 between the highway 121 interchange and rural Sonoma County and highway 29, in vallejo. So if you dont have to go that way, or perhaps you can get on the freeway after westborough. 280 is a pretty good after that. 101 is looking good, and you can always use El Camino Real as little secret shortcut if you will get on the freeway after westborough in the east bay highway four westbound, you have slow traffic, which is typical. 680 is beginning to fill in approaching walnut creek. The Contra Costa County Sheriffs Office believe he was by himself near the shoreline and accidentally fell into the water. A rescue diver ultimately found the boy submerged in a cove. He was believed to be in the water for about 15 minutes. Rescuers performed cpr and rushed him to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. I havent really noticed whether there could be better security measures, to tell you the truth, i think its, you know, most of the most of the most of it is really up to the homeowners to sort of make sure their particular areas are secure. Investigators are still looking into the circumstances of the young childs death. This tragic accident can serve as a reminder to families of the importance of water safety, especially as it gets hotter outside. Even if you have a life jacket on a child, absolutely arms reach at all times, and then the other thing get him in swim lessons. Get him, get him comfortable in the water. Make it enjoyable, do swim team, build your skills, those kind of things. But parental supervision, on top of lifeguards that are on site is huge to water safety is an estimated 1000 children a year are set to die from drowning. One person experienced minor injuries, didnt need to go to the hospital, though firefighters stayed at the scene for several hours after the flames were out watching for hot spots. Surrounding streets were reopened around 8 a. M. The cause of this fire is still under investigation. Across the bay, a lithium battery plant fire at the port of oakland sent a large plume of smoke into the air in oakland sunday afternoon, Oakland Fire Department says it was quickly contained. No injuries reported. Still were no word on what caused this fire. Time is 716. In west oakland, the Community Reacting to a weekend fire that badly damaged an historic church. It happened friday night at Saint Andrews missionary baptist church, 27th and west street. More than 60 firefighters battled those flames for hours. Investigators say the fire spread from a vacant home nearby. Many Church Members hope this Historic Building can be rebuilt. Its sad theres a lot of history here. Like i said, i spent the first 15 years of my life here at this church and. And, im glad to see you survived. Although it was a lot of damage, the firefighters say no one was hurt. Investigators are still searching for the cause of the fire. Happening today, cleanup crews in baltimore, maryland, plan to use explosives to break down a span of the bridge that collapsed back in march. Crews have been preparing for weeks for this controlled demolition. The focus is now on the largest remaining steel span of the ship thats now on the ships bow. The demolition was originally scheduled for sunday, was postponed, though, because of weather conditions. Authorities say they hope to reopen the shipping channel by the end of the month. The Biden Administration reportedly plans to crack down on some new technology from china tomorrow. The Biden Administration is expected to announce new tariffs for electric vehicles from china. If youre driving in oakland on interstate 880, it still looks good past the coliseum, southbound 101 is theres a problem at yerba buena heading south toward gilroy. Northbound 101 traffic a little bit slow as you drive through. And i also want to mention that on the peninsula southbound 280 at westborough, there is an overturned vehicle in one of the right lanes, Fire Departments blocking that lane. Were backing up almost all the way up to ceremony there. So if you can get on the freeway after 90, after westborough, that would be better for your drive. And also 92 getting out of Half Moon Bay right at pilarcitos creek. Theres a crash there and the traffic is slow in both directions.
