This has happened periodically over the years and its not unique to contra costa. Since september, the number of ambulances has increased from 54 to 72 per day, but Officials Say theyve received 240 calls for an ambulance this year alone. More than two thirds of them needed serious advanced medical attention, and paramedics are hard to hire and keep. We are putting up to a dozen firefighter emts through Paramedic School and then our subcontractor, amr, is also putting many of their emts who want to become paramedics through this Paramedic School, hospitals are overburdened and understaffed with hospital wait times for ambulances up to an hour at places like contra costa regional and john muir, walnut creek. We have seen some success with sutter delta in antioch, who has reduced their ambulance patient offload time in the last 12 months by a full 50, fire chief louis brochard says this is a system wide issue happening across the state. But in contra costa county, hes working on implementing a program called Nurse Navigation, where 911 callers who dont need an emergency transport can set up a doctors appointment. The whole point is to try and take demand down so that not everything is a 911 emergency. Not everything requires a paramedic transport to the hospital. Not everything, even requires transport to the hospital. And the Nurse Navigation program would cost about 600,000 a year. But it could alleviate the problem. Anyone with information about the case is asked to Contact Oakland police. A shooting suspect is in Critical Condition after San Jose Police opened fire on the man. He is accused of shooting at random in a busy neighborhood. Ktvu south bay reporter jesse gary has the latest on the investigation. San jose Police Investigators say the man seen in this Security Camera video getting out of a minivan and shooting is a felon armed with a gun that hasnt yet been traced. Around 4 00 sunday afternoon, police say 41 year old san jose resident Ricardo Villarreal drove to the k and k apartments in East San Jose for reasons still unknown and fired indiscriminately. Thats a frequent occurrence. We often find felons in possession of firearms. That was the situation 17 days ago, and so thats part of what we were trying to figure out. Its part of what were trying to convene a group of people together to figure out why in san jose, we are seeing this uptick in violence directed, gun violence directed at our police officers. Ive been doing this a very long time. Ive never seen us San Jose Police officers take so much gunfire in such a short period of time. Apartment complex residents called 911, which brought a swarm of police officers. Neighbor jorge chavez used his cell phone to show officers converging on the van after the initial shooting. We hear a gunshot and we at first we thought it was like a firecracker, but we didnt think much of it. And later we hear like two more gunshots and then thats when i looked out to the kitchen window and i saw there was like a van with broken windows. Villarreal was eventually cornered by three officers, all three on the force. Three and a half years, four years and four and a half years fired, hitting and dropping the suspect. This apartment complex was filled with people enjoying a warm sunday evening. Families, friends and children were safe one minute and the next in grave danger. What they did next was the one thing they knew would stop this nightmare and make their family safe again. They called San Jose Police officers for help. We cannot allow attempts of killing of our officers to become normalized. Expected or tolerated. Detectives say they recovered a loaded, unregistered gun at the scene. Officials say this is the third time this year San Jose Police have been targeted with gunfire. That happened only twice all of last year. We need to continue pushing to fully staff our Police Department because in dangerous situations, minutes matter. Clearly we need to do better. Ensure that people who are prohibited from owning guns cant access them by working harder to get unregistered and ghost guns off of our streets. The department is now working with the atf to try to trace a gun that they say so far has been untraceable. While at San Jose Police headquarters, jesse gary, ktvu, fox two news, San Leandro Police have arrested a 13 year old in the stabbing death of a young man inside a safeway. The attack happened last month at the safeway on bancroft avenue. Police say an 18 year old man was stabbed during a confrontation with the suspect. Investigators say interviews with witnesses and Surveillance Footage led them to their suspect. They also say a search of his home resulted in additional evidence linking the teen to the crime. He was taken into custody at his school on thursday. Home depot has been fined more than 1. 3 million as part of an arson investigation into a massive fire. Dillon gregg was charged with arson for setting the home depot in san jose on fire in april of 2022. His case is still pending. The Santa Clara CountyDistrict Attorneys Office now says, though the store had several fire Code Violations that prevented firefighters ability to save the building on that day, including a water Sprinkler System that was not working. Firefighters were also blocked from the fire lane by improperly stacked pallets. New at six tonight, the two Half Moon Bay mushroom farms, where Mass Shootings took place last year, are now being ordered to pay thousands of dollars in back wages and damages. A u. S. Department of labor investigation has recovered more than 450,000 for 62 workers at concord farms and california terra gardens. The Labor Department also assessed penalties after investigators found the farms underpaid workers and provided unsafe housing conditions. The wage recovery and fines are part o settlements reached for multiple violations of the migrant and Seasonal AgriculturalWorker Protection act and the fair labor standards act. The controversy over campus protests continued at the university of San Francisco today. The school began removing tents and belongings from a propalestine encampment. University of San Francisco student susu stasha says the campus gave no notice before they started removing tents at a propalestinian encampment on monday morning. The students were already planning to leave, but she says that doesnt make it right. They once they came in, they just started breaking stuff down. No warning, no, no consent, no. Like, hey, wheres this . They just took everything down. They shoved the tent. They shoved everybodys personal belongings. The campus says most students had already left the camp, and that the majority of the 50 tents had been abandoned. The tents have been on campus since the end of april. Protesters in line with the campus tagline, have been hoping to spearhead change, drawing attention to the plight of palestinians half a world away. The university did have its graduation ceremonies last week, and some of the protesters did interrupt the law school graduation, but for now, they are moving on to their next phase of their protest in San Francisco.
