I dont know what the exact circumstances or they had a car or not, but apparently from what i saw in an email from the fair itself, was somebody walked up to the person that or persons that were putting the money in the bank and put a gun up to their head, basically, and then the rest is history. Now, organizers of the county fair say they may now have to cut back on next years plans for free, fair activities to help make up for this loss. Theres no word from police yet on descriptions of whoever stole that money, and california lawmakers want to do more to stop smashing grab robberies. The state senate and the assembly passed separate packages of bills to increase the penalties for organized crime rings to allow thefts to be combined so they can be prosecuted as grand theft, and also allow retailers to get restraining orders against convicted shoplifters. Its a good day for retailers. We think these will provide a number of tools for law enforcement, for retailers and for district attorneys that we think will change the narrative on how california will address retail thefts throughout the state. Its a good start, but it does not solve the problem by any means. We need to reform proposition 47 and a separate effort is underway to repeal parts of prop 47, which voters approved in 2014. Ktvu james torres live at Oakland International with some numbers and travel plans expected. Hi james. Hi gasia. What you think of memorial day weekend . A couple obvious things come to mind a three day weekend, maybe some plans to do some barbecues, possibly boats on the water. But we talked to some people flying out of the bay area this morning who had a couple of different ideas of how theyre spending their long weekend. Were heading to omaha, nebraska, and whats in omaha, nebraska, were going to go take a tour with our grandparents to see what life was like before electricity going to strongsville, ohio, and whats in strongsville, ohio. We havent seen numbers like this from memorial day in nearly 20 years, not since 2005 that weve seen numbers this big, when we talk about the pandemic again, were not just talking about prepandemic numbers. We are surpassing prepandemic numbers. So that tells you a lot about how people are viewing travel these days. In california, that number is about 4. 5 Million People traveling for the weekend by car for airlines, tsa is expecting as many as 3 Million People in a single day. Thats likely set to happen tomorrow, the faa says today could be the single busiest travel day since 2019. Some popular hot spots on the agenda by flight florida, las vegas and denver, which the faa says is new to the top of their list. Experts predict if this weekends numbers reach what they are expecting to see, then we could expect to see a surge of fliers and travelers this summer at about close to 300 Million People, from now until the end of august. That is, weather permitting. Time now is 710 and we do have slow traffic out there. If you are driving on westbound bay bridge at the toll plaza, it is backed up almost all the way to the maze. Metering lights are on. Nothing unusual about that. Its been a pretty typical commute with a little bit of slow traffic here, and there for the most part, nothing major. And if youre driving on the san mateo bridge, that traffic looks good. We did have some earlier slowing on to 80 heading north, getting up to highway 17, and thats because of an earlier vehicle that was blocking lanes, although it seems to be just a little bit better now, you can kind of see it there was a fire here on the shoulder out. Let me put the arrow here. You can kind of see it. Right. Well its there, its on the right and traffic is slow. Well before that from almost highway 101 theres the Emergency Vehicle there. So it does get better right after that. Seven an 11. Lets get back to the desk. The smoke is about, id say 100, 100ft up. This has probably been the biggest fire ive seen. Smoke from a fire in redwood city at a metal scrap yard caused air quality concerns. Miles away. What it took for firefighters to get that fire under control. The city of oakland is selling its stake in the coliseum. Why . The group that wants to repurpose that prime piece of real estate has another big hurdle in its plans to vitalize the area attraction at San Franciscos pier 39. Because of allegations of excessive spending, the chronicle reports. George jacob was pressured to resign as ceo of the aquarium of the bay. Depape is facing charges of attempted murder, burglary and assault. The prosecutions got a video. This is a 21st century case. They have the crime actually recorded, visually. So the question would be for the defense. Can you find jurors that might be more sympathetic to somebody whos got mental illness, who believes in a bunch of conspiracy theories . Now, after an error was made during the sentencing . Depape is due back in Court Next Week to be resentenced in his federal trial last week, he was sentenced to 30 years in prison. Facing former Oakland Police chief Leronne Armstrong is running for city council, filed paperwork to run for the at large seat currently held by Rebecca Kaplan in 2023. Armstrong was fired by mayor shang tao after an outside investigation concluded he had mishandled two Police Misconduct cases. He was later cleared of those allegations by an arbitrator by an arbitrator. Now, his move for the City Council Seat is garnering mixed reactions. I dont really think that there should be like police and government because they might be like biased. You know, i believe he will. Like i said, hes, he did a good job when he was the chief, i think he was wrongfully fired, but, i think he would do a good job. At least eight other candidates are seeking that seat, and political watchers say more may file. And the city of oakland reached an agreement to sell its share of the Oakland Coliseum. The mayor announced the city agreed to sell its share to the African American Sports Entertainment group, ask seg will buy it for 105 million. The goal is to redevelop that property to include Affordable Housing and entertainment, and Sports Complex, and generate more jobs. The group also wants to buy the oakland as portion of the property as well. This is a moment where east oakland is going to change. We are in healthy negotiations and theyve continued and they are moving in a positive direction. And our objective clearly is to, be able to acquire that site as well. The deal still has to be approved by the oakland city council. An introductory meeting is expected to take place as early as next week. All right, 718 lets see what the morning commute is doing. Sal castaneda where are you watching most closely . Were watching right now. Grass fire. Garcia and dave, northbound 280 near bert avenue. It was there on the freeway and you can see a little indicator that i put up there. The traffic was slow as the firefighters are on the shoulder working that fire. Theres no more smoke, but right there and you can kind of see it here. You can kind of see some activity on the right hand side. You can see one of the fire trucks there. But before all this, you cant see all that slow traffic. So give yourself plenty of time to do that. If youre driving on any of the bay area bridges, i think the same material bridge looks pretty good heading out to the high rise, and we also do have westbound bay bridge backed up to the maze. 718 lets talk about todays weather. And heres steve. Thank you, kind sir. Well get right to it here. Cooler pattern. More so friday saturday before a little rebound on sunday into monday. But today is that kind of that tweener day. But temperatures are dropping and if youre heading out sacramento, lake tahoe, monterey, Santa Barbara, la been socked in big time with the may gray. Even palm springs dropping to a comfortable night. That sweater weather for palm springs. Oh my gosh. But it does look like some thunderstorm activity could pop up in tahoe if youre going there. Especially i think over the weekend 40s, 50s, mainly 50s on the temps, upper 40s, 50s here. That system thats just coming out gave record rainfall to seattle. By the way, is the western edge of that is going to deepen over us. That will allow cooler weather. Little sunny today, breezy, only some patchy fog. Otherwise were looking good to go. And if you want cooler and windy weather friday and saturday for you, if you want a little warmer sunday. Monday. All right steve thank you.
