KYW Through The Decades September 24, 2017

Its famous feuds through the decades. Feuds. They are fights that go on and on. And on. Many of us have them with family, but history has witnessed ongoing arguments among rival scientists, sports figures, politicians and even actors. Today here on through the decades, were taking the hour to look back at some famous feuds throughout history. From the duel between Alexander Hamilton and aaron burr that ended a bitter rivalry as well as hamiltons life. To comedians jack benny and fred allens pretend feud that spanned nearly 20 years across both radio and television. But we begin with the 1959 debate, when politicians from the soviet union and the u. S. Went toetotoe on television. The summer of that year, Vice President Richard Nixon was visiting to moscow as part of a cultural exchange. That trip would earn a place in history, thanks to an impromptu debate with the soviet premier that would forever be known as the kitchen debate. For four days now, some of the 20th centurys most extraordinary diplomatic maneuvers have been taking place in moscow. Vice president Richard Nixon and soviet premier Nikita Krushchev have thrown away the rules of polite diplomacy, it would seem, and are engaging in roughand tumble impromptu debate. 15 years after the end of world war ii and just a few years before some of the hottestmoments of the coldwar, honest debate was on display in moscow right alongside the newest of american housewares. Before his Famous Television president ial debate with senator john f. Kennedy, nixon got to test his chops in front of a camera against the leader of americas greatest rival. In what may be remembered as the strangest contest in political history, nixon traded barbs with soviet premier Nikita Khrushchev in a debate named for the bizarre venue it took place in a model kitchen. The topics ranged from rockets, communism and capitalism, war and freedom to Color Television and the kitchen sink. Vice president nixon escorts soviet premier krushchev on a preview of the United States fair at sokolniki park in moscow. Just a month after a soviet exhibit went on display in new york, nixon would help open the american version in russias captial city. But on this occasion, traditional diplomacy goes by the board and the story of the fair itself is eclipsed by a crackling exchange between nixon and krushchev. Soon after setting foot inside the shows model kitchen with Television Cameras rolling, krushchev both playful and filterless started to make a case against americas capitalist lifestyle. Well then, we will say america has existed 150 years and this is her level of achievement. We have existed not quite 42 years and in 7 years from now, we will be on the same level of achievement as america. In the following years, we shall continue to surge ahead, and when we shall overtake you at the crossroads, we shall greet you. applause every aspect of the cold war and sovietamerican rivalry is argued in blunt and forthright terms. There are some instances where you may be ahead of us for example in the development of your, of the thrust of your rockets for the investigation of outer space. There may be some instances, for example, Color Television, where were ahead of you. But in order for both of us. For both of us to benefit. You see, you never concede anything. Wait till you see the picture. The words sound fierce and harsh, as if they might increase International Tensions and plunge the world into a new cold war crisis, but strangely, is does not seem to be happening. The two principles, nixon and khrushchev, are still smiling, apparently enjoying the electric aura that their talks are producing. As to the question of social systems, if you want to live under capitalism, go ahead and live. This is your business. This is your internal affair and it doesnt concern us. We can only sympathize with you, but after all if you dont know how to live, live as you know. I want you, the Vice President , to give your word that my speech will be recorded in the english language. It will be yes. Certainly it will. Your hand. At the same token, everything that i say will be recorded and translated and will be carried all over the soviet union. Thats a fair bargain. applause and then nixon and krushchev continued their tour of the United States exhibition, halting at a kitchen in that model home. There they held whats becoming to be known as the kitchen summit conference, discussing among other things, the capitalist attitude towards women. The soviet premier looked at a washing machine and said that the russians had such things too, but he didnthare the capitalistic preoccupation with making life easier for women. And then krushchev teed off on the model home itself, saying that such houses would only last 20 years but russians believe in building houses to last longer. That goodwilled verbal sparring continued through multiple venues during nixons visit. Despite the obvious differences, there seemed to be a shared desire for peace. Said he, the two nations must Work Together to break the ice between them one of the most effective moments of mister nixons remarkable tour of russia. Krushchev would agree to an invitation from president eisenhower to visit the United States in september. I most sincerely hope that as you come to see and believe these truths about our people, there will develop an improved basis on which we can together consider the problems that divide us. russian while peace is advantageous to all nations, this is the basic principle that we believe the statesmen of all countries should be guided by in order to realize the aspirations of the people. It was the last time khrushchev would be this open with the u. S. And the last time Richard Nixon would meet with the man as we continue our look back on famous feuds, we look back on the deadly battle between two prominent american politicians a story that would be retold on broadway more than 200 years later. The premiere of a controversial t. V. Show that made two animated teenage degenerates pop culture phenomenons. Plus, the Television Game show that would pit two families against each other. And we remember the long running faux feud between two comedians, billed the battle of the century. Alexander hamilton. He came to this country alone at the age of 15. This immigrant from the west indies fought in the revolutionary war, was George Washingtons right hand, an author of the federalist papers and built the foundation of our modern financial system. Aaron burr was Vice President of the country, and these two men did not see eye to eye. Alexander hamilton hasnt always been the top billing of our american founding fathers. Until recently, he was introduced to americans a bit like this. President washington selected Alexander Hamilton to serve as the first secretary of the treasury. True. But what else did most of us know of his story . The guy on the 10 dollar bill. He was president right . Who knows . Its not something that is as widely known as a George Washington or Something Like that. Its no discredit to aaron burr or anyone else from that era to say that their accomplishments were not on par with those of Alexander Hamilton. Ron chernow is the author of the 2004 Alexander Hamilton biography, and in it, he brings light to perhaps the best known events of hamiltons life. Colonel burr, are you ready . Yes, i am. Present i dont know whether its correct to fault burr for having killed hamilton since this was violence between consenting adults. The duel between aaron burr, then Vice President , and Alexander Hamilton would cast hamilton as a bit of a hero with an unfulfilled destiny while burr was labeled a traitor. as attorney general, as senator for the state of new york, as Vice President to Thomas Jefferson all of his contributions have been obscured. Honor had to be restored and to the extent that Alexander Hamilton refused to do that, than the duel became inevitable. But, it is Lin Manuel Mirandas musical, hamilton that has helped illustrate chernows inveterate construction of hamilton as a vtly more complex and human story. Im past patiently waiting, im passionately smashing every expectation, every actions an act of creation im laughing in the face of casualties and sorrow. For the first time, im thinking past tomorrow. Hamilton, he was a firecracker. Hcouldnt keep his mouth shut. He kept, he would always say whats on his mind and i love that about this guy. This scrappy, ambitious and brilliant man emerged from humble immigrant roots to develop the spirit of the american character and engineer the Political Foundation of an infant nation. My father was mexican, i cant separate the idea of that part of this message of the immigrant side of Alexander Hamilton who comes into this world and says, i have to take this opportunity or i will be brushed aside or i will be left behind and that is what people think about as the United States, as the american dream. As go there take your shot. I am not throwing away, my shot. I am not throwing away my shot. And yo, im just like my country, im young, scrappy and hungry and i am not throwing away my shot. The musical has brought hamilton to the masses. The man who realized the countrys future viability and power would come from Financial Systems and industry, now has made this centuries old argument relevant and resonant. The man who arugued for a strong federal government and was instrumental in ratifying the newly written constitution is a pop icon. He says, now for a strong central democracy. If not then ill be socrates throwing verbal rocks at these mediocrities. come on. How do you even think of that . Weve been fighting about the same stuff for 200 years whether its immigration, whether its foreign policy, whether its. When are we a state . When are we a country . Thats in the fabric of the compromises that lead to the formation of our country and you have to think if it that way. You cant think of it as these stone tablets that came down from on high. While Alexander Hamilton was in there creating our country and creating all these things, he has turmoil with his family and turmoil with his inner fire that he has and so thats the biggest thing to take away is to remember that they were all just people in an unbelievably pressurized situation and how they created what they created and what they did at the time is unbelievable. It was a buh of different colonies trying to figure out how they could live together and theres, you know, theres cracks in that foundation and were always going to be figuring out how to mend those cracks. Rise up, when you are living on your knees you rise up. Tell your brothers hes gotta rise i dont say that. John lawrence says that. But, theres something there. Theres something there for a country, for groups of people, for just a people in general that are feeling left out or left behind or anxious or nervous or about anything, whatever it is, that message you got to rise above it. Were going to rise above it and were going to be great. Still to come, we remember the premiere of a controversial show that made two animated teenage degenerates pop culture phenomenons. Plus, we take you back to the day that joe frazier battled muhammad ali in a timeless match dubbed the fight of the century. This is through the decades. Century. This is through the decades. These two animated teenage knuckleheads were best friends, as they spent all of their time together. However, that time was spent watching music videos and disagreeing on the merits of the productions. Their altercations were often physical and the verbal spars unforgiving. Beavis and butthead. The animation was crude and in the 90s they were a pop cultural force. It made me laugh so i hoped it would make other people laugh but i didnt think it would be quite this huge. I hoped that it would be popular. And was it ever. Lasting 222 episodes and even spawning a feature film. But explaining beavis and butthead wasnt easy. Theyre, you know, two deviant metalheads but there is a moronic charm about them. I mean, theyre idiots but you might end up liking them. They do say things that you might think but never would find yourself saying. They have really short Attention Spans and they dont of course, they dont read much. They read street signs and things like that. Most of the time, theyre just looking for some cheap thrill basically and watching t. V. They go to school sometimes. I think theyre kinda funny and i think thats their main redeeming characteristic. Breakin the law hmmm, yeah, lets burn something mike judge, who not only created the show but voiced the characters and their laughs, says he came up with the concept in 1991 after realizing beavis and buttheads are everywhere. I was thinking about kids i knew in junior high and, you know, they had their heavy metal tshirts real serious, megadeath or something you know like real tough guys but they also have braces, you know, and so theyre at that awkward age. Theyre like 13 or 14. Where they wanna be real tough kids in the mall smoking but they still have to get their braces tightened, you know, so that they can get their teeth corrected before they grow up. Reactions to the show varied. Some thought it brilliant while others called it lewd an inappropriate. And it wasnt just the grownups. At the Glenfield Middle School in montclair, new jersey, the topic in mr. Mccarthys social studies class this week was yes. Its the beavis and butthead show. What is the attraction for beavis and butthead . Why are so many kids watching it . Its vulgar. And i think kids these days, they like vulgarness. Its not encouraging people to be stupid. Its making fun of stupid people. If thats what you think is funny, i mean, what is our Society Coming down to . But in october of 1993, beavis and butthead would be thrust in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons. A tragedy allegedly inspired by a Cable Television program watched by many children is focusing new attention on what our kids watch on t. V. How did we get from leave it to beaver to beavis and butthead . from programs about morals to programs about morons. A 5yearold set a fire that killed his little sister. His mom blamed an episode of beavis and butthead for depicting fire as fun. In the middle of all the controversy, mtv has refused all requests for interviews. But it has pulled 5 of the most controversial episodes, removed all references to fire and moved the program from its 7 p. M. Time slot to 10 30. The cartoon became a focal point in a larger cultural war that would come to define the 90s. A cruder, unpolished show that was ratings gold for genxers. Even as and maybe because their parents and teachers couldnt quite understand the point. The fact that students are looking at something that says school is bad. And it kind of glorifies the people in a sense that dont do well in the school. Instead of dissiminating the best in our culture, television too often panders to our lowest common denominator. But not everyone thought the mtv cartoon was to blame. Parents in this country cant afford to stay home and raise their own kids. Thats the problem. Its not, you know, and scapegoating beavis and butthead is, under these circumstances, its preposterous. But that, says dr. Barbara stagger, as a mother of two boys and director of adolescent medicine at Childrens Hospital in oakland, california, is precisely why we need to be more careful about what we put on television today. And we have to look at how were doing things and who is raising our children. Right now, most kids are getting raised by their television sets. But the people in charge give their viewers more credit than that. You know, theyre over the top cartoon characters and i think people can distinguish the difference between whats real and whats fiction. You know, theyre clearly caricatures and toons if you will. As we continue our look back on famous feuds, we remember the premiere of a Television Game show that pits two families against each other as they try to outguess each other. Plus, we relive Zsa Zsa Gabors notorious slap. Youre watching through the decades. Youre watching through the decades. Famiy feud is one of the most successful t. V. Game shows in broadcast history and made survey says an enduring american catch phrase. Name something you can do with a nose. Blow. Blow a nose . Let me see blow. Its one of the most iconic game shows in u. S. Broadcasting history. Family feud premiered on the abc daytime schedule on july 12, 1976. Since then, it has been one of the most popular game shows on the air. It was created by the prolific game show producer, mark goodson the man responsible for shows like the price is right, password and match game. Goodson selected one of match games star panelists, richard dawson, as the host for family feud. The british entertainer was already wellknown to american audiences primarily for his role on the 60s sitcom hogans heroes. But family feud gave dawson a chance to interact with real people. We taped 5 shows in one day and not come home high, i mean just high on people. That love of people was symbolized by his incessant smooching with female guests. All women received a kiss on the lips from dawson, whether they were black or white, young or old. His son, mark, says one sponsor threatened to pull commercials from the show if he didnt stop kissing black contestants. He was just irate abo
