KYW CBS Evening News With Jeff Glor December 6, 2017

And road trip. The r. V. Is making a comeback. I just love being on the road. This is the cbs evening news with jeff glor. Glor good evening. The state department is asking u. S. Diplomats around the world to put off all noneventual travel to israel, jerusalem, and the west bank until later this month. The department is concerned about any possible violent reaction to president trumps announcement today that the United States now recognizes jerusalem as the capital of israel for the First Time Since the jewish state was founded nearly 70 years ago. Mr. Trump also ordered the state department to begin planning to move the u. S. Embassy from tel aviv to jerusalem, a campaign promise. Major garrett is at the white house. We cannot solve our problems by making the same failed assumptions and repeating the same failed strategies of the past. Reporter president trumps recognition of jerusalem as the capital of israel rejects the policy of previous president s and the recommendations of his secretaries of state and defense. This is a long overdue step to advance the Peace Process and to work toward a lasting agreement. Reporter but Administration Officials could point to no evidence this symbolically important shift in u. S. Policy will accelerate peace talks. Mr. Trumps soninlaw, jared kushner, is leading that white house effort and has yet to formulate a plan. We will move the American Embassy to the eternal capital of the jewish people, jerusalem. Reporter in an appeal to his Christian Conservative base, candidate trump promised the embassy move. Today he started that effort, which is expected to take at least four years. A new embassy, when completed, will be a magnificent tribute to peace. Reporter the president made his decision last week at the urging of Vice President mike pence. Pence, himself a Christian Conservative and staunch supporter of israel, will travel to the region later this month. There will, of course, be disagreement and dissent regarding this announcement. Reporter mr. Trump said the u. S. Would not dictate the terms of a peace agreement, adding the u. S. Would still support a twostate solution if that is what the israelis and palestinians agreed to. This sacred city should call forth the best in humanity, lifting our sights to what is possible, not pulling us back and down. Reporter senior Administration Officials anticipate palestinians will blow off some steam before realizing the u. S. Is central to any durable peace deal, and with this move, they say, the president is signaling the contours of that deal will get worse, not better, the longer the palestinians wait. Jeff . Glor major garrett, thank you. The president s announcement set off a wave of warnings across the middle east. We are joined now by seth doane in jerusalem and Holly Williams in istanbul, turkey. Seth, to you first. What does this do to the immediate prospects of the Peace Process . Reporter well, it really depends, jeff, on who youre asking. On the israeli side, you have people, many who are overjoyed. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu came out right after with a statement and said that in the great 3,000year history of the jewish peoples connection and belief that jerusalem was their capital, this was a significant day. On the other hand, you have palestinians who feel exactly the opposite. The palestinian president , mahmoud abbas, said he believes this disqualified america, disqualified the u. S. From being a negotiator. And we asked one Senior Palestinian official about president trumps reputation of being a deal maker, and she laughed at us. She said, the abcs of deal making are not to give everything to one side, and this is how this is being viewed by palestinians. Glor holly, turkeys president says this is crossing a red line. Why . Reporter jeff, muslims around the world see this as a slap in the face, because so many of them support palestinian dreams of statehood, and here in the middle east, many, many people have somehow come to believe that the u. S. Is waging a war against islam and against muslims, and they will see this as more evidence of that. We heard today from King Abdullah of jordan, a very important u. S. Ally. He was here in turkey meeting with president erdogan, and he said that this move could fuel extremism and undermine the war against terrorism. But the criticism isnt just coming from muslims. European leaders and china have both voiced their concerns, and today even the pope spoke out, saying that he prayed that wisdom and prudence would prevail. Glor seth, are you seeing protests now, and what might you expect in the days to come here . Were already starting to see some protests earlier in the day, but several palestinian groups have called for a day of rage protest on friday of course, the holy day here that. Is already changing the security situation scenario, the look ahead on the ground here. We had abbas come out and say this announcement opens the gates of hell. Glor holly, what else are you paying attention to in istanbul or other parts of the arab world . Reporter jeff, i think there is not very much that governments in this part of the world can do about this right now, and they know, that but next time the u. S. Wants cooperation from middle eastern governments in this very important part of the world, because of oil, because of its location, because of terrorism, this wont help. Glor Holly Williams in istanbul and seth doane in jerusalem, thank you both very much. Our other big stories tonight, we are closely watching wildfires in southern california. One is in the heart of los angeles. For much of the day, a stretch of the 405, a major highway, was closed. The fires are being fueled by santa ana winds, which are expected to kick up again overnight. Nearly 200 structures have burned, thousands were evacuated from some of l. A. s most prestigious and densely populated neighborhoods, and carter evans begins our coverage on this. Reporter at daybreak, a traffic nightmare. The northbound 405 still shut down. You dont want to be on the west side this morning. Reporter this is what commuters saw on interstate 405. Oh, no. Reporter one of the nations busiest freeway. Thats freaking crazy. Reporter on the ridge above, belair, one of l. A. s most exclusive neighborhoods, as flames raced up the hillside, multimillion dollar homes lay directly in their path. And the battle on the ground became desperate. You can see the fire burning inside this home right now. The staircase and its burning through the garage door, even the roof of the home. There is nothing firefighters can do. Just a few minutes later, part of the roof crashed down. From the air, the extend of the damage became apparent. Plumes of smoke stretching for miles above los angeles. Back in belair, you can see the flames shooting through the roof of this home. No matter how much water they put on this fire, they cant seem to put it out. Were doing the best we can. Reporter it looks like no amount of water is the enough. No, its not. Reporter no amount of fires was enough either. They still hadnt reached azita kabouds home. This is my neighbors house. Its going to burn down. Reporter her husband maurice hosed down as much as they could. The fire now next door. What is it like the see your neighbors homes return . Its the worst feeling in the whole world. Reporter thats l. A. County fire coming in with a water drop here. They have a bit of a break in the wind, so theyre trying to take advantage of it, keep the fire from advancing over this hillside, but, jeff, those really heavy winds are expected to pick up again tonight. Glor carter, thank you. A photo from space shows smoke from the fires drifting yesterday hundreds of miles into the specific. Since then the fires have grown and plumes have thickened. Russell begaye tells us david beg now tells us there is a new warning tonight about the wind. Reporter jeff, as the wind shifted, that toxic smoke blowing off shore is now starting to blow back on shore, in areas of Ventura County where the thomas fire is burning. Officials have put out an alert to residents in the county telling them there will be a severe impact on air quality and visibility. As you look up at the sun, its as if day turns to night in the middle of the day. Right now firefighters are putting out hot spots. This area burned this morning, but it is still smoldering tonight. Firefighters have been told get ready and rest up, because tomorrow could be a wild day, the most extreme winds are expected tomorrow, jeff. Glor david, thank you. A senior volkswagen manager was sentenced to seven years in federal prison today for his role in the emissions scandal. Oliver schmidt, a german, had pleaded guilty to fraud. Schmidt led v. W. S Engineering and Environmental Office in michigan and covered up the companys scheme the cheat on diesel emissions tests. One day after michigan congressman john conyers stepped down, pressure is building on minnesota senator al franken to do the same. For the same reason, accusations of sexual misconduct. Today more than half of frankens fellow democrats in the senate said they want him out. Here is chief Congressional Correspondent nancy cordes. Enough is enough. Reporter female senators led the way today, lowering the boom on their friend and colleague. Its probably in the best interest of a lot of people that he resign. Reporter the final straw was a report this morning in politico, a former democratic staffer said franken tried to forcibly kiss her after a taping of his radio show in 2006, insisting, its my right as an entertainer. He mashes his lips against my face. Reporter radio host Leann Tweeden made a similar accusation three weeks ago, producing this photo of franken appearing to grope her while she slept. That prompted a series of women to say the former comedian grabbed their breasts or buttocks while taking photos with them. The latest disclosures i think have reached a tipping point. Reporter frankens quasi denials didnt help. I cant say i havent done that. Those are instances that i do not remember. Reporter by urging first john conyers and now franken to go, democrats are hoping to create a contrast with the other side. President trump endorsed Alabama Senate candidate roy moore this week, and the Public National committee resumed funding his campaign, despite multiple accusations that moore pursued teenagers while in his 30s. Well, i didnt vote for roy moore. Im a writein. Reporter Senate Republicans insist their views on moore havent changed. I think he would have immediately have an issue with the ethics committee, which they would take up. Reporter frankens colleagues assume he will resign tomorrow, but frankens office says tonight he still hasnt made up his mind. Cbs news has learned that franken and his wife met with democratic leader Chuck Schumer at schumers apartment today and that schumer told him its time to go. Jeff . Glor nancy cordes, thanks to you. Time today named the silence breakers person of the year. These are women who have shared their stories about Sexual Assault and harassment. Among those appearing on the cover are Actress Ashley Judd and singer taylor swift, the elbow you see on the right represents victims who have chosen to remain anonymous. Now here are some other stories were watching in the news feed, the republicanled house approved a bill that would allow gun owners with conceal carry permits to carry handgun in any state that allows concealed weapons. Senate democrats are expected to try to block the bill. The number of homeless americans has climbed to nearly 554,000. Thats nearly 4,000 more than last year and first increase since 2010. The soaring cost of living is mostly to blame. The crisis is worst in the west. Winter weather has stormed into the upper midwest. Whiteout conditions in minnesota yesterday caused more than 400 crashes and cold weather blows into the east on friday. The great lakes will become snow making machines for parts of ohio, pennsylvania, and upstate new york. And there is still much more cbs news to come tonight. Reporter a new study gives us a clearer picture of the risk of Breast Cancer from Birth Control medication. If it were not for my love for the people, i would not have protested, and if it was not for the support from the people, i would not be on this stage today. Reporter the lots at jayco are lined with all kinds of r. V. S, selling for 15,000 on up. This is 701,000, but one of your assistants told me i could drive it away for 699,000. My 3month old business. Plus. What if this happened again . I was given warfarin in the hospital, but wondered, was this the best treatment for me . So i made a point to talk to my doctor. He told me about eliquis. Eliquis treats dvt and pe blood clots and reduces the risk of them happening again. Not only does eliquis treat dvt and pe blood clots. Eliquis also had significantly less major bleeding than the standard treatment. Eliquis had both. And that turned around my thinking. Dont stop eliquis unless your doctor tells you to. Eliquis can cause serious and in rare cases fatal bleeding. Dont take eliquis if you have an artificial heart valve or abnormal bleeding. If you had a spinal injection while on eliquis call your doctor right away if you have tingling, numbness, or muscle weakness. While taking eliquis, you may bruise more easily. And it may take longer than usual for bleeding to stop. Seek immediate medical care for sudden signs of bleeding, like unusual bruising. Eliquis may increase your bleeding risk if you take certain medicines. Tell your doctor about all planned medical or dental procedures. Eliquis treats dvt and pe blood clots. Plus had less major bleeding. Both made eliquis right for me. Ask your doctor if switching to eliquis is right for you. Eight hundred dollars when wet switched our auto and home insurance. Looked into the link between Birth Control medication and Breast Cancer. Dr. Jon lapook is here to explain. Jon, tell us the latest. Reporter jeff, this was a very large study from denmark that followed almost two million women for average 11 years, women using Birth Control methods that involved hormones or an i. U. D. Had a 20 increased risk of Breast Cancer most. Of these Breast Cancers were found in women in their 40s, and women using hormones for less than five years had no increased risk after being off them for six months. Glor is this a surprise . Reporter well, in the past this increased risk had been known, but back then there were higher dosages of the hormones that were being used. Now were finding with relatively lower dosages of hormones, youre still seeing the increased risk. Glor so millions use Birth Control medication. Put this in perspective for us . Reporter the 20 translates to about one more case of Breast Cancer a year for ever 7,700 women. One Breast Cancer expert that we spoke to described this increase as small but meaningful. You have to balance that against potential benefits of using hormone, for example, decreasing the risk of Ovarian Cancer and endometrial cancer or colon cancer and the benefitted of preventing an unwanted pregnancy. Glor so how do you balance the risk and benefit . Reporter ultimately it comes down to discussion between the doctor and the clinician and the woman. It cant be rushed. They have to slowly discuss specifically what makes sense for her. Glor jon lapook, thanks very much. Still ahead here, this painting sold for 450 million. You might be surprised at where its headed.
