Lake Winnebago: DNR hosts hearing on technology for sturgeon spearing

View Comments
MADISON - Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has scheduled a July 8 public hearing to discuss the use of technology — underwater cameras, electronic fish finders and similar devices — during the Winnebago lake system's sturgeon spearing season.
The hearing is set for 6 p.m. online by a Zoom link or by calling 1-312-626-6799, and entering meeting # 898 4531 9032.
The Winnebago System is home to one of the largest lake sturgeon populations in the world and the annual sturgeon spearing season on Lake Winnebago and the Upriver Lakes (including Lakes Butte de Morts, Winneconne and Poygan) is managed under a DNR harvest cap system to protect the fishery from overharvest and maintain a healthy sturgeon population.
