The Nobel Peace Prize. Scotlands rugby office threatens legal action if the world match is canceled. It is in doubt because of the typhoon. Scotland will go out of the tournament if this match is called off. Barbara the u. S. Is beefing up its military presence in the gulf as tensions continue. The pentagon is sending 3000 troops to saudi arabia to bolster the kingdoms defenses following an assault on Oil Facilities last month. Septembers drone attacks threatened the heart of the saudi industryh. Houthi rebels claimed responsibility but the u. S. Pointed the finger at iran. Marine and air force units to provide increased capability in the region if necessary. United states remains committed to protecting our allies and ensuring the free flow of demonstrating our amendment for the rulesbased international order. Irish other likeminded countries especially those in europe to follow the United States lead and join with defensive assets to ensure stability in the region. Barbara our reporter joins us. What else to we know about the reasons behind the u. S. Sending these troops . They are saying there has been not just this incident on september 14, where the Oil Processing facilities were targeted and damaged partially by the drones and cruise missiles. The u. S. And several european intelligence agencies confirmed the attack had to have been launched from southwestern iran. They are holding the government responsible. Apron little bit later on friday we heard from the special thatsentative from iran the u. S. Is seeing more provocative behaviors from to. Ran from tehran this is basically trying to make ally,n a key defense saudi arabia, would be better protected and able to protect itself from iranian or other attacks. Theseng of the role troops would have, do we know that role these troops would have . They did not want to get more specific on what these troops would be doing, but when you look at the list of equipment deployed, it gives you a better sense. We have two fighter squadrons. That seems to mean air patrols to make certain there is not any iranian jets trying to encroach in saudi airspace for like carry out bombings or missile strikes. You also have the information that there will be more in the watershaps between iran and saudi arabia. It is worth pointing out one of the things brian hook did do friday was to urge european allies to actually participate in what the u. S. Has been calling its maximum pressure campaign. To provide more military surveillance not just in the gulf but in the airspace above, trying to make certain as many eyes as possible are on what the Iranian Military is or is not doing it to try to curb not doing and to try to curb its activities. Barbara what makes this surprising is it is days after President Trump publicly decides to pull out troops from Northern Syria. We are seeing this fallout from turkey attacking kurdish fighters in Northern Syria. On the one hand the president is taking troops out in syria, but putting more in saudi arabia. Rosalind u. S. Officials were questioned about that and took umbrage that there is this undercutting of what the president has long said he wants to do, to dial back the u. S. Military presence in the middle east to stop being the worlds policeman and to stop being the mediator in so many conflicts. What the defense and state Department Officials are trying to stress is that they reserve the right as the u. S. Government to prepare and to be ready to deal with any sort of unexpected contingents. They did also note that there are going to be forces leaving the region because of regular rotations and the president is much committed to getting u. S. Forces out of harms way. Care y they did not they did not appear to satisfy the contradiction that seems to be a parent. Barbara thank you for that development. The reasons and reaction from the u. S. Lets bring in breaking news the middle east. Northern syria, there has been an explosion near a u. S. Base in Northern Syria with turkish shelling. For more on this, lets talk to charles in the turkish district of on the border with syria. This happened recently. What else do we know . Charles certainly according to u. S. Officials and a syria monitoring group, a projectile lead to closely to a u. S. Base near a town. That were fears and rumors the base had been directly hit. It transpires now according to a Statement Given to the news them by. P. , given to the u. S. Official the projectile did not hit the base but was around about a kilometer away. The Turkish Defense ministry have come out with a statement which seems to verify that, saying they came under attack from what they describe as mortar shells in an area close to the base. They responded and they stopped immediately on the americans telling them to. To highlight how difficult the bordersn is along the when there are american soldiers in these outposts. We know they have pulled back certainly from this area where there are Ongoing Operations happening but there are american soldiers in syria and in this area. So as they say, it shows you what a tense situation, inflammatory, we are in at the moment. We know the americans and the turks share their coordinates. There has been some twitter activity amongst certain commentators, saying, accusing the turks of being incompetent or not taking enough care and attention in the military offensive, accusing them of not using the coordinates or paying attention to them of the u. S. Outposts, but it seems now according to the statements put out by the u. S. Sources and the Turkish Military minister of of defense, istry very nearly exclusive situation has been avoided. Barbara tell us more about the turkish impact the offensive is having with the military and situation . We have been hearing hundreds of thousands are displaced. That is right. You can imagine, we are hearing from various sources that the Turkish Military are indeed pushing further in to syria. We know the area i am in at the moment you find me, the town of which has been under bombardment for the last two or three days, we hear that Turkish Forces are effectively almost surrounding that town. We understand the civilian population fled a couple of days ago. That is a similar scenario in other towns on this border. Organizations are very concerned that the thousands that are fleeing are not going to be able to get the humanitarian assistance that they will need. Bear in mind many of these people are internally displaced throughout the 8. 5 years of the syrian conflict. Certain organizations are saying it is difficult enough to get aid to them because of the security situation in some areas. You can imagine when there are heavy weapons being used and there are those that are concerned about the potential isil for example, the military operation goes on, there are serious concerns about how those in need of humanitarian aid could be assisted. A very difficult situation. Charles there with the latest in the turkish situation. Of its oil tankers was attacked off of the coast of saudi arabia. They said the vessel was hit by two missiles in half an hour. It was sailing 100 kilometers off of the saudi port city of jeddah. The crews are reported to be safe. We have more from iran. Reporter Irans Foreign Ministry confirmed friday in the yearly Morning Hours one of their oil tankers was targeted in eastern corridor of the red sea, 100 kilometers off of saudi arabia. Explosionsenced two 20 minutes apart. The Foreign Ministry spokesman said this is not the first time iranian vessels in the red sea have gone through destructive actions. Thelamed this on perpetrators who have yet to be identified. They were taking part in dangerous adventurism. A senior mp from iran targeted the u. S. Irans National Oil Tanker Company whose experts are investigating, they were pointing out that while terrorism or some form of missile attack was the cause of the incident, they dont suspect at any attack originating from saudi shores. This comes a day before Pakistans Imran Khan will visit. He will be here to mediate between riyadh and tehran. But iran is likely to have its diplomatic defenses up again. If there was any hope for a breakthrough during his visit it is now less likely. Barbara there are developments out of the middle east. An analyst with the Advocacy Group next Century Foundation joins us now. Thank you. Lets focus on the u. S. Sending thousands of additional troops to saudi arabia. What do you make of that . It is a clear indication washington wants to protect its geopolitical interests in saudi arabia and we have crewmember we have to remember [indiscernible] the us is a clear indication the prince feels uneasy regarding his position in saudi arabia and the dangers, not just with iran but yemen. We have to remember last week a saudi territory was breached and that means so their sovereignty has been challenged. The additional troops is a direct reflection of the fear that could be further encroachment on saudi arabia which could happen quickly. Barbara why do you think the u. S. Is going to result or protect saudi arabia . How is that in the u. S. Direct interests when a few days ago President Trump announced controversially he was pulling out of Northern Syria . If you recall when you when aramco was targeted, the World Markets went crazy for a week or two and Oil Prices Went up rapidly. It would mean a recession for the u. S. And other countries across the world. It is something i dont think like to see would happen bearing in mind he is running his campaign on the basis of an economic boom in the u. S. To have saudi arabia stable and have interests stabilized with World Markets concerned, that is washingtons interest. Sending troops within that narrative makes perfect sense. Donald trump is concerned. I dont think we need to look into it as proof america is a friend or ally of saudi arabia that that saudi arabia is a great interest as far as america is concerned and americas vision for the middle east. Barbara saudi arabia and the middle saudi arabia and the u. S. Have a history, but do we see a stepping up of the thetionship, changing balance of power in the middle east with american influence . It is difficult to say because mr. Trump has the propensity to change his mind quite violently. It depends on how mohammad bin salman decides to position himself and whether he is capable of continuing to consolidate his power and his as far as the concern he can maintain the type of power he has amassed the past years. Powertinues to project and mr. Trump will be a great friend to not only mohammad bin salman but saudi arabia. It depends on what happens with iran, whether we can see something happening in the region where iran plays a greater role in bringing peace to yemen, whether the saudi decide to let go of the Mediterranean Convention in yemen. There are many components what happens next and how washington would position itself in those new dynamics. Difficult to foretell. Barbara how do you think these additional u. S. Troops in saudi arabia will be viewed by iran . What impact will that have on the country . Charles i dont think iran will be very concerned. It might see them as a direct threat to its sovereignty and escalation in the region. I think it will play out more in relation to yemen and how the rebels will look on the new threat to their traditions in yemen and maybe understand this as a challenge to the Peace Initiative that they did offer to react in terms of a truce or ceasefire. At ld be looking i dont think iran will be particularly interested. Not directly with the short term. It has to do with how the rebels will understand. It is more directed to them instead of iran. Analyst with the Advocacy Group next Century Foundation, thank you for joining us. Coming up on this newshour from london, a former u. S. Ambassador to ukraine says donald trump pressured the state department to fire her. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson says it is not a done negotiations intensify to get a brexit agreement. Barbara hundreds more indigenous protesters are pouring into ecuadors capital to join the demonstrations against government prosperity measures. They have taken to the streets to demand the president repeal a law that ended a 40yearold fuel subsidy. In a testimony to members of saysess, Marie Jovanovich she was removed from her post because of unfounded and false lanes. The inquiry is investigating if trump tried to pressure ukraines leader to dig up dirt on joe biden. We have more from capitol hill. Confirmed they did not want her to testify. So the chairs of the house committees that are leading this subpoenaed her. That is why she came. The reason that is interesting is earlier this week, we had that letter from the white house to congress saying we are not going to cooperate in any way with your impeachment investigation but now we understand what it means in reality. That would mean apparently that in order to cooperate for voluntary interviews, they will try and stop their officials from taking part. It would seem from this example if a subpoena comes, people will be allowed to testify. Before the former ambassador began her testimony, the current e. U. Ambassador said to his lawyer he will testify later on this week. He had actually earlier on in permission sed was refused permission to testify. His lawyer said the state department doesnt want him to put the subpoena means he will. He is someone donald Trump Supporters wanted to testify because he is Donald Trumps man in the e. U. This person is an ethiopia analyst and expert in international law. He joins us in the u. K. Theow you are very pleased Prime Minister got the peace prize. We heard about his accomplishments. Tell us what you think why you think he deserves it. Was think your reporter reporting from addis ababa. He came to power out of nowhere. He was not on the political scene before. He came out of nowhere and changed the landscape. Fromved ethiopian estates political explosion. So that is very specific things in terms of widening the estates laid a very significant role in tons of Holding Ethiopia together. Most importantly the role he played in establishing which is notorious for instability, not just in normalizing with neighboring ethiopia but also more broadly in the region. Somalia and kenya, south sudan, more recently in sudan. There is not really anything in the country where he hasnt played a role in terms of bringing people together. Point is that remarkable. Stabilized his own country and then bilateral relations with eritrea. What do you think the Nobel Peace Prize itself, what message do you think it sends not just to him but to the people of ethiopia and the region . I think it is partly a recognition of his achievement. Although what we have so far is a significant improvement from what we had, things are still in a very difficult and very complex position. The situation in ethiopia is fragile. It is a complex and difficult transition. The same things for regular issues, sudan, other countries. The prospect of a sustainable peace is a long way down the line. Hink the recognition would also leaders across the region to do more because building sustainable peace takes a long time. It requires working through the underlying structure problems which take a long time. I think it is a call to action primarily which would give him the energy, the push he needs to bring people together and to bring the right actors together. Barbara the Nobel Peace Prize gets criticized sometimes. It was given to barack obama. With the benefit of hindsight looking back, it might have come to early certainly. We have seen more purse peaceful years and more fraught ones. Is there a risk the same thing could happen without . There is much to do that maybe this came too early . I dont think so. In this case the Prime Minister within a short time has taken some decisive measures for peace. In some cases at great personal risk, significant risk to his power. One of the clear things was his commitment and determination, the way he reached out to the eritrean government when he was appointed as Prime Minister. He said clearly ethiopia would pt theoretically they said they would access the decision but eritrea wasnt really committed. When they made the statement, they thought it was another gesture. He followed this, and he made peace possible and he allowed normalized relations with also i think most visible aspect, reuniting families that was splintered over 20 years. That is real change. It is an achievement and important to recognize people who have shown that level of courage and pursuing the peace agenda. Barbara that has been recognized with the novell these prize.
