The white house says trump is being briefed and monitoring the situation. You can see the base on the map. Is between baghdad and syria. Our correspondent joins us on the line from baghdad. Clearly, this is a ways away from baghdad. Details are sketchy. What do we know . Reporter so far, we have spoken. Ith sources and Iraqi Security 13 missiles have landed at a base. [indiscernible] i am still getting more details. S the story develops this is a logistical and military hub. Combined chores combined joint task force for the coalition formed to fight isis. About getting reports other destinations hit by missiles. This has not been confirmed. There are a number of u. S. [indiscernible] warnings have been issued by. Orces [indiscernible] trips are being transferred to kuwait. Iter would this base be and be an easy target to identify . Reporter absolutely. Which has beend there since before saddam husseins time and was acquired by u. S. Led coalitions. Before 2011. Ration base. Efurbished the number ofen a Tactical Operations that have been launched from their. Because it is located in a strategic location, Logistical Support would be going on from southern to Northern Iraq and would have to make a stop there. Heavy aircraft could land there. [indiscernible] it would not be difficult to find on a map. Is not confirmed what kinds of defense capabilities they have. Have bastionsions attacks but we do not know if this base had it or not. Landed and iran is saying they lost launched tens of missiles. Base, they must have been living in an atmosphere of expecting some like this Something Like this. Speculation on our part but maybe they were able to put into effect a quick mechanism or procedure in anticipation of this. Reporter absolutely. Not just at this one, but across Security Forces have been on a state of high alert. We are told Coalition Forces are anticipating some sort of reaction. So steps have been taken in the last 24 hours. Almost three hours, constant stoppeder traffic were but have not resumed. Hearing that the staff and personnel are safe but we do not know what type of retaliation will come from iran or a proxy iran has. Will there be attacks . This is something all Security Forces including iraqi have been anticipating. Peter thank you very much. Another correspondent joins us from tehran. What are the are igc saying . [indiscernible] they have warned countries that any United States attack on them, iran will respond. This is not new. Ran has always stated this [inaudible] iran, iranagainst will retaliate. [inaudible] crowds were calling for revenge, a crushing revenge that the United States would remember once iran retaliated. Many people out on the streets have been calling for revenge. [inaudible] it is a matter of when, not if iran will respond. Peter is the revolutionary guard asset saying where the missiles were fired from, or can we speculate where they were fired from . Moment, we dohe not know where they are fired from. They could have been from within has. Or in a proxy iran it is difficult to tell. But we do know iran has the , outside of iran they have missiles that can reach iraq. So it is a question as to. Hether iran retaliates [inaudible] they have military aircraft and drones. A military drone was shot down using u. S. Missiles. Peter stay close, we will come back to you in a couple of minutes. Lets take the evolving story for you as we look at these latebreaking pictures. John is in washington. We understand mr. Trump being briefed as we speak. Reporter that is right. President trump has been briefed. We have a statement from the white house saying they are monitoring events from the white house. That was from the press secretary. We have a statement just received from the Defense Department saying the missiles were clearly launched from iran. The statement says approximately 5 30 p. M. Eastern standard time in the u. S. Iran launched more than a dozen Ballistic Missiles against u. S. Military in iraq and it is clear the missiles were launched from iran and targeted at least two Iraqi Military bases. Not just the base weve been talking about. Another base as well. I can tell you, i have covered the pentagon for many years and having been inside the palace on base, someone is right. That is a huge base and there are many targets because it is strategically located near the center of her rack. It is center of iraq. Where helicopters would vary troops ferry ferry troops. Last time i was there, there were restaurants, gymnasiums, swimming pools. It is a massive complex. A big base like in the u. S. Hundreds or possibly thousands of troops. So there were plenty of targets. What the people will be doing in the base right now is they have a Security Center with cameras that bring the base. There will be looking at those cameras and they have other devices that will look for the origin of attack. That is probably what they have done to find out the missiles came from iran. They will be looking at radar, satellite feeds, trying to determine the origin and pinpointing exactly where the rockets were fired from. When they have done that, they can choose to retaliate later, or retaliate immediately, which is something they do from time to time. What we have not heard is anything about casualties. We have confirmation there has been an attack. We can expect because the base was on high alert, people will be Walking Around with gear and helmets and be protected. But the base is an isolated spot. It is very possible we could have injuries or even deaths. Precisely the kind of retaliation the president , defense secretary, secretary of state, in the past 44 hours, they have all warned against. Peter stay with us, john. Earlier, trump said the killing saved a lot of lives and many countries have thanked him, he claims. He said the general was planning imminent attacks. Trump we had tremendous information we have been following him for a long time. We follow his path for the three days and they were not good stops. We did not like where he was stopping. We saved a lot of lives. He has been called a monster, and he was a monster. And he is no longer a monster, he is dead. And that is a good thing for a lot of countries. He was planning a very big, bad attack for us and other people. And we stopped him. Clearly, we took that soundbite from mr. Trump inside the oval office by the greek premier. That predates what is going on now on the ground at the base. However, at that news conference, mr. Trump basically rolled back on his stated position about having 52 targets for 52 hostages taken and held at the u. S. Embassy in the iranian capital of tehran 40 years ago. John that is right. The president tweeted several days ago that there were 52 targets and he said among the targets were iranian cultural sites and he would hit the sites if iranians retaliated against the u. S. He said he did not have any he would choose among them but he specifically singled out cultural sites. That is under a 1954 hague violation code of International Law and the defense was asked about it on monday and mark esper said, i will obey the laws passed. He was asked if that meant he would not strike . And he said that it is the law of armed conflict. Tuesday, the president backed unfair that it was he could not target the sites because american troops were being hit by roadside bombs and rockets in iraq, according to him, by iranian militia members and he thought it would be fair to target the sites but he said if that is a law, we will not do it. Peter ok. Lets listen to what mark esper has been saying. States is the united not seeking a war with iran. But we are prepared to finish one. We are seeking a diplomatic solution. But first, this will require iran to deescalate. The regime will have to come to the table with the goal of preventing further bloodshed. It will require them to cease their activities throughout the region. We are open to having this discussion with them but we are just as prepared to deliver a forceful response to defend our interests. Peter john, a cascade of soundbites from a few hours ago. Mark esper talking about the diplomatic solution with the revolutionary guard of iran taking credit for firing 13 missiles at the base. Halfwayow discussing between baghdad and syria, difficult to see a window of opportunity for diplomacy. John true. Esper said he expects iran to retaliate. Does this crossed the threshold he was warning about that could escalate the conflict into something closer to a war . Right now, they have had rockets fired at the bases before but as far as i know, it is different to have them identified as being fired from tehran. I will likely be considered a major publication. Exactly with the u. S. Does in response, we do not know but this is what esper was warning about earlier today, earlier tuesday. Pompeo and trump shining in just chiming and. A coordinated message from the administration saying they were justified in killing the iranian general, and that that was not enough to prompt iran into a war so they were warning iran any retaliation had to remain below a certain level, a level they did not identify. Peter we will talk to you in a bit, i am sure. Lets bring in a retired iraqi Brigadier General and attaching to the United States and joins from virginia. Good to talk to you. The revolutionary guard laying firedto 13 rockets being at the base. They said they would retaliate. Looks like they are doing it. Exactly. This is expected because i think this time, the strike has hit from the americans and they are poor. Iranians are taking the credit to hit back directly. They would lead their proxies to deliver the message to the americans. That is expected. It is kind of saving face for killing the general was an insult from the americans to the iranians. Therefore, i think iran has to retaliate. They are compelled to retaliate selectinghat would be same volumewith the as killing the general to be as impactful. So iran has selected this option but i do not think this will be the only retaliation from iran. Peter when it comes to the idea of it not being the only retaliation, we have another confirmed report saying a second base has also come under attack in the immediate aftermath of the assassination of the general. Everyone was saying the same thing. That iran does not have the military wherewithal to sustain asymmetrical state of war against the United States. Cant do it. But it can sustain some sort of asymmetric campaign, perhaps including going for bases such as the base we are now discussing. Is this the beginning of a war between iran and the United States on iraqi territory . Conflict has already between the United States and iran. Iran has proxies and they were always delivering the message on iraqi soul youll iraqi soil to americans supporting iraqi forces. But i think this time is different than other times. The killing of the general was an insult to iran. Warfare we arel going to be int a way to prevent it. We cannot prevent this kind of warfare by any means, even by diplomacy. I do not think so iran would be accepting or on the table to negotiate any kind of compromise with the americans. Iran will also give freedom to the proxies in the region to retaliate. For me, i think the most they a convention of conventional war with americans but i think americans do not because theo war position of the work can be easily started, but no one has the position to end the war. Peter that is interesting because that is opposite to what mark esper said. He was saying we do not want to start a war, but we will end the war or a war with iran. Had onen the place you the periphery of the decisionmaking process in the United States, what is the process they are going through now if they are deciding to react or retaliate, and what kind of targets would they go for if they are not going to go for what mr. Trump was talking about three days ago, cultural sites . Is depends on the impact and result of this kind of attack. Is resolved with casualties, the retaliation would be different. If there are no casualties or minor casualties or logistic casualties, the retaliation will be different also. So it depends on the evaluation and the aftermath of the attack and how america would react toward the kind of attack. Perspective, americans would favor deescalating the think therecause i forces in iraq are vulnerable their forces in iraq are and it would cause a lot of casualties. Wouldk the United States go for deescalating the situation. Peter thank you so much for joining us from virginia on skype. Seconds to for 20 get you up to date. This is on a loop. Not particularly exciting television news, but these are the latest pictures of what we are understanding is going on. Retaliatingey are for the killing of the general last week. These are pictures of what has gone on overnight local time at the airbase. This hosts a big u. S. Contingency and was hit at least six times according to one report. Another report said nine times. One report is talking about 13 missiles having been fired. Gs is claiming. Launched aey have successful attack in the name of the general killed. Lets bring in a correspondent in baghdad who joins us on the line from the iraqi capital. Details still coming through all the time. Yes. Ter in the last 15 minutes, we have heard a confirmation from the Northern Iraqi coalition that multiple missiles have landed. This is coming from sources close to the government and the kurdish region of iraq. This is the second location which has been hit by missiles that have been fired from iran. News agenciesia and iran that missiles have been fired. According tod Iraqi Security forces. We do not know about casualties or damage missiles have caused. A second wave of missiles has also been launched. It looks like this is a sustained attack happening on iraqi targets, Coalition Targets anorak. Rack. In a in iraq. There was fear iranian proxies would be used. A lot of speculation about ground attacks. Coalition forces have been movement in the where multiple helicopters that traveled back and forth right around the time when the letter was released by iraqi soldiers about the United States confirming that was later redacted by the United States defense secretary. Here is what we know. The base has been hit. Damage on what sort of has been caused. Complex. Sprawling we have seen multiple facilities. Troops they are say it has been a relaxed atmosphere since the fall of isil. An important logistical hub, right in the middle of a. Ack iraq for refueling we would have to stop at the base. It is a location where we stopped on our way to a check in the area where this all started to kick off when the United States attacked and retaliation to an attack in accused hezbollah of doing. We saw Mobilization Forces joined together and attack the u. S. Embassy compound and on friday it culminated in the assassination of the general, brandon my e experience is so difffferent than a mainlanand chinese, it wouldnt be authentic for me to try to cook food for Mainland China because thats not me, and thats not my audience.
