Plus, social distancing. We will tell you about a danish tradition helping people connect despite the restrictions of living in the pandemic. Also on the show my soul and heart is crying for the violence that is coming. Host i will ask the leader of the opposition from belarus about the future of the Opposition Movement in her country on this day that the eu recognized the struggle with its top human rights award. Im brent goff the. Tonight, we begin in the United States where President Donald Trump and his rival joe biden are set to face off in a few hours for their second and final president ial debate. Both men will face questions from six topics, and we will go through them. Those include fighting covid19, the state of american families, race in america, Climate Change getting a lot of attention, and national security, and last but not least, leadership. With election day less than 12 weeks away, this debate could be crucial for any last few undecided voters. New for this evening, microphones will be muted when a candidate is not supposed to speak, hoping to prevent a repeat of the chaos from the first debate last month. Finding someone who does remember that, i colleague oliver sallet. Good evening to you. Weve got the topics for the debate set. Weve got that mute button. What else can we expect . Oliver i remember very well, brent, and that is also the question that millions of American Voters are asking themselves. How is this going to look . As you mentioned, the first debate ended in chaos. It was dubbed the worst in history, President Trump constantly debating joe biden. Trump, not looking very good in the format. The moderator exposed the misinformation trump wanted to spread, and tonight, it will be the last chance for donald trump to turn the tide. He is trailing in polls, and he is feeding from that chaos, but the microphones will be muted tonight. That will bring some normalcy back to the president ial debate, and will be very interesting to see how President Trump will respond to that and how that format is going to go down with American Voters. Brent you remember the last time in the first debate, the moderator was blamed for part of the chaos. This time, the moderator is already under attack from donald trump. What is the story there . Oliver Chris Wallace at the first debate had a very hard time controlling the situation. This time will be different in part because of the new rules in place, but trump generally speaking has a problem with the mainstream news, as he calls them. He believes they are biased, trying to damage his campaign, and in an interview format published today by trump before it even aired, 60 minutes, an interview where he walked away after half the interview time. He cannot stand critical questions, and that is exactly what might happen tonight with the difference being he cannot walk away. With regards to tonights debate, he already lashed out against the host, Kristen Welker of nbc news. He called her a radical democrat. Hes trying to show himself as the underdog, him against the establishment. Brent briefly, what about early voting . How is that going in the u. S. . Oliver weve seen long lines in many states. We are nearing record turnout, with the difference of course being we are two weeks ahead of election day. What data suggests here is that the democratic voters are outnumbering republicans in early voting, but that doesnt have to mean a lot because republicans are hoping for a large turnout on election day. Brent oliver, thank you very much. We will have full coverage of the debate here on dw news. You can catch the action live at 12 30 a. M. Gmt. In europe, 2 45 a. M. In the United States, that is 8 45 p. M. Eastern time. Lets turn to another campaign issue, racism and police violence. The Police Killing of george floyd in minneapolis sparked a mass protests across the country. Many people are asking if trust between police and the community can ever be restored. Our correspondent Stefan Simons has the latest tonight on that story. Stefan minneapolis, may 28, the third precinct of the Minneapolis Police department set ablaze during protests against the death of george floyd in police custody. The Burning Police station becomes a symbol for the protesters fury, for their demands for an end to police brutality. Five months later, abandoned, boarded up, and secured with cement barriers, precinct three is a symbol, signifying the cities struggle to make the changes the protesters demand of the local police department. Minneapolis is still dealing with the fallout and the controversy and the trauma surrounding george floyd being killed by the Minneapolis Police department. There is definitely a breakdown in terms of trust to be between our elected officials and ofs, as well as between constituents and our Law Enforcement community. Stefan volunteers plan to patrol their neighborhood in the ninth ward of minneapolis. They are christian and local and growing in number. We thank you for your blessings, lord. We ask you to watch over us. Stefan the group, recently recognized and supported by the city, is filling the gap created by the collapse of trust between the police and black community. With Police Patrols absent from this part of town, they have taken on the task of proactively protecting the community. We want to have selective police in our community who live in our community and look like our community. Stefan Minneapolis Police recognize the need for urgent and fundamental change. Pd chief eric force says a new recruiting strategy is critical for progress. One of the best things you can have is have a department that is as reflective of your community as you can get it, especially people from the community. Stefan he stresses from his point of view, there are at least three other Top Priorities for reform. There needs to be deep engagement with the community. Secondly would be trainings with how we deescalate situations, and lastly, what that requires, all of this, is the personnel. Stefan words are not enough, says dave, a local activist with the group called communities against police brutality. There has been talk of reform. There has been radical talk from the city council, but there has been virtually no action whatsoever, and we are not seeing a lot of initiative for action from the city council, the mayor, the police chief. Stefan the city council talked of abolishing the current form of policing, but was hit by a reality check. My advice to other cities facing the same challenge is to ensure that when you are going to divest from your current policing system that you really do have a much longer and proactive plan for instituting alternatives that have been tested and work. Stefan after hours of patrolling their neighborhood, the agave men decide to go home. They will be back tomorrow night and the night after. The changes we are pushing for is more generational change. We want to make it better for our children. This is like our starting block right here becaus we are trying to pave the way for them. Stefan heres a quick summary of some of the days other headlines. The Senate Judiciary committee has voted to approve President Trumps pick for the u. S. Supreme court. Amy Coney Barrett will likely be confirmed for the court before the november 3 election. Democrats boycotted the meeting, calling the rush to replace the late Justice Ruth Bader ginsburg a sham. Nigerias president is calling for an end to protests in his country despite the growing anger and unrest on the streets of lagos. He made no mention in his address of tuesdays violence in which Police Allegedly shot demonstrators. At least 12 people were killed. Russian president Vladimir Putin says he would not have allowed kremlin opponent Alexey Navalny to leave russia if he had been the one who ordered navalnys poisoning. Putin said he personally authorized navalnys evacuation to germany to receive medical treatment. Five years after a hacking attack on the german parliament, the European Union has imposed sanctions on two russians, accusing them of stealing chancellor Angela Merkels emails. The sanctions were imposed on the head of russias military intelligence and one other official close to the kremlin. Germanys Public Health authority says the country could face an uncontrolled spread of coronavirus infections. The robber cocked institute has recorded a new high for cases, and warns that death rates could also rise. Authorities have issued new travel warnings and are urging people to stick to the rules in an attempt to curb the spread of the virus, but stricter measures could be yet to come. More than 11,000 new cases in one day. Its the highest number of covid19 infections germany has reported since the pandemic began. Left is a map of germany two months ago. To the right, its clear half of germany has changed color. The situation is now very serious. The number of infections is rising quickly, and we dont know where that number is headed. We can still slow the spread. We are not powerless if we fall all of follow all of the rules. While some germans are worried, many are keen to play their part in helping to slow the spread of the virus. I suspect we will have to face even more restrictions. I think that is justified because we have to live with this pandemic somehow. I still feel good because i am taking care of myself, and if everyone does, we will get through it. The government is doing enough. I hope our people do enough. That is the risk backed the respect for rules. There is ventilating rooms, as well. If we do it all, i hope we can get by without too much trouble over the winter. Germanys Public Health body says the majority of people dont catch the virus at work or on public transport, but in private settings like parties. The virus spreads where people enjoy coming together, and where they want to get to know each other. There are more intense interactions in those settings. You are having a good time, and then the virus naturally has a better chance of spreading if there is infected person present. With infection rates accelerating, some labs warned that smaller facilities are already working at full capacity and might not be able to cope with rising numbers. There is also concerned that more areas in germany will have to implement harsh restrictions again, like here in bavaria where schools have closed down again. Brent heres a look at some of the other developments in the coronavirus pandemic. The who says the rollout of rapid diagnostic tests could be a game changer in africa, but it is also warning increased testing could drive up the number of confirmed cases. Indonesia is reporting more than 4500 new cases. The country has the highest number of infections and deaths in southeast asia. Astrazeneca and oxford universities say their vaccine trials will continue despite the death of a volunteer in that trial in brazil. Political leaders across europe are faced with tough decisions over how to deal with rising numbers of coronavirus infections. In denmark, they are taking their own approach. A sense of Community Spirit has been said to help whether this crisis. They even have a word for it, and they believe it can help populations that are facing lockdowns and deal with possible economic hardships and a yearning for a sense of normality. My colleague is here at the big table with me. Pablo, what is the word we are talking about . How has this danish tradition been helpful in fighting the virus . Pablo one of our colleagues locally is danish, and he told me how you pronounce it. Essentially, the meaning of it is society spirit, mindset. It encompasses the idea that you have to Work Together as a team, a community for the greater good. Its basically that everybody in society plays a role. Its very appropriate for the situation we are in. Its about social responsibility. What was interesting was that the Prime Minister metro fredrickson spoke about this. Normally its the idea of coming together, that at the moment, its the idea that we stay apart. Basically working together so that we can reach something better. Brent you are being civicminded. What would be classified as that . There are some good examples in denmark, and one was in tinley gardens, which is a theme park in copenhagen. They doubled it up as a kindergarten during the worst of the pandemic. Also, a michelin star chef who just days before the lockdown back in the spring was charging hundreds of euros not euros in denmark, but a lot of money for his meals, but then he was cooking for the homeless and socially vulnerable citizens. Lets hear from an expert we spoke to, professor michael bang peers michael bang peterson. The concept generates motivation and acceptance. It generates your own motivation , and it creates an understanding for why the restrictions are needed. Therefore, you are excepting them to a larger extent. Brent what could political leaders learn from the danes . One thing that is very important to note is in denmark and in scandinavia, there is this idea that there is a lot of trust for the system and politicians in general, which is not something you can say at the moment in the United States. This is counterproductive, of course, if you are trying to control a situation. Not everyone is going to listen to what politicians have to say. Brent its a mixture of being civic minded, social distancing, and faang shuai feng shui. Thank you. The European Parliament has named belaruss democratic opposition of the winner of its top human rights award. The recipients include Opposition Leader sviatlana tsikhanouskaya. Despite Police Threats to use weapons and open fire, the opposition accuses longtime leader alexander of rigging the vote. I am joined by sviatlana tsikhanouskaya. Let me start by saying congratulations to you and your fellow activists. How are you feeling this evening . Sviatlana its an honor to get this award for the belarusian people fighting for democratic freedoms in belarus. I have to say thank you to every person who participated in this movement, and thank you for giving this award. It is meaningful for the belarusian people as they fight for freedom. Brent you say it has symbolic meaning. What will this pride is be able prize be able to do for you and your fellow opposition members who are trying to bring change to belarus . Sviatlana if we are taken into consideration, it will be given to one of the initiatives that helped people directly from belarus. We will give this money to the people. Brent let me ask you, were you surprised when you heard the news . Why do you think the European Parliament chose you for this award . Sviatlana because the European Parliament sees that we are fighting for new actions, for a president elected to ourountry who will build democratic freedom, and appreciate our stride for building this new country. They support the belarusian people who have done demonstrations. Our minds have been changed forever. Brent this prize will certainly bring new attention to you and the opposition and the movement to bring reform to your country. How do you feel about europes efforts to help you moving forward once all of the attention has subsided . Sviatlana of course, such attention of International Society is rather helpful for our movement. We see the interest of International Leaders helping us. We are getting different kinds of support from Different Countries like scholarships for students, opening different programs for workers who are on strikes. Its a different kind of help. Brent are you getting enough help . Sviatlana because this is my country, and the belarusian people are suffering, this is our fate. It is not enough, but we are grateful for everything they are doing. Its up to every country how they can help us, and we appreciate any help. Brent i want to ask you how you are doing personally. We know you fled the country after the election for the safety of your children. Are you safe tonight . Do you still worry that forces from inside belarus are a threat to your life . Sviatlana physically, i feel safe, but my soul and heart is crying for the violence in belarus. Brent we offer our congratulations to you for winning this prize, and we want to wish you and everyone involved in those efforts the best. We appreciate your time tonight. Thank you. All the best. A new exhibition opens tomorrow focusing on the wife of one of europes most powerful rulers, charles five. 500 years ago, the habsburg leader was crowned emperor of a dominion that included large parts of europe and the americas, but his rise to power could not be completed without a great deal of insider dealing. Here is a closer look. He was already one of the most powerful rulers of his time, but charles five wanted the title of holy roman emperor. In the middle of europe, the church was divided. The ottomans threatened the empire from the east, and powerful european competitors were vying for the same title. He borrowed 600,000 guilders with which he bribed the selection committee. It was customary for a certain negotiation to take place when a king was being appointed. Goods changed hands. Political promises were made on both sides of the table. For it to have happened on such a large scale was unprecedented. The bride worked, and charles v was appointed. His coronation mantle and a copy of his crown are on display in this german city. The coronation happened not here because
