Investigate an alleged physical and racist assault by police officers. The funeral of a football legend has taken place at a cemetery in argentinas capital. There was heavy security as his body was transported from the president ial palace to the cemetery to be bued. Dozens of people lined the route to watch the procession. Earlier, there were scuffles between mourners and police after authorities tried to shut off access to a public awake. Images showed rioters firing tear gas at crowds. The country is in the midst of three days of mourning. More from the capital of buenos aires. For one day, argentinas president ial palace was filled with football fans. Thousands came to pay their respects to the man, the myth. The coffin lay in state, adorned with the number 10 jersey that made him famous. He was filled with emotion when he saw the coffin. We do not judge him for what he did with his life. But for what he did with us. For spa he dated he gave people happiness. Something no politician has done. He came from the poor slums of buenos aires. He was an example of the extremes that exist in this part of the world. For his legions of argentine fans, he was like them. Our god is dead. The god of the people, the poor, the one who represented all of us. That is why i am so sad. Argentina is in morning. Many of those who come here are holding back their tears. Others are crying. Others say they came here to celebrate his life. That is why they are seeing songs about him. He has a special place in peoples hearts in this country. That is why thousands have come to say goodbye. And it is not just any argentina. In italy, in the city of naples where he played for several years, people also got together to bid him farewell. He fully married the city. He understood the essence and soul of neopoliticians. He is seen as one of us. s passing comes as a shock to much to most argentines because it puts an end to part of this countrys history. For many, diego will become the deity that some claimed he was while he was alive. Turning to the coronavirus pandemic, germany is imposing stricter lockdown measures as it struggles to repress infections. Lockdowns are likely to continue to january. She is pushing for an e. U. Vote to shut down ski resorts are for the holidays. That is getting a chillier reception in other european countries. At this swiss resort, the danger of covid19 has not prevented the slopes from opening and these skiers from enjoying them. Although covid has killed more than 4000 people in switzerland, officials here do not want to kill the economy too. They say they have Protection Measures in place. We are trying to make it possible to do skiing vacations. We are trying hard at the moment to improve every possibility that has been offered. With the social distancing, masks, whatever because we believe we have to live with covid19. Across the border in france, the view is different. Within a thousand people have died with covid19. Ministers here fear a repeat of the kinds of super spreaders ski events that occurred in austria and elsewhere at the start of the pandemic in europe. Of course, it will be possible for everyone to go to ski resorts to enjoy the mountain air and the shops that will be open except bars and restaurants. All the ski lift and public facilities will be closed to the public. In berlin, there is a determination to try to prevent mass participation event whether it is ski resorts are not, right across the you. The european union. We will try in europe to get an agreement on closing all skiing areas. Judging by what the australians are saying, it does not look like it is going to be easy to achieve but we will give it another try. The feeling in the austrian capital is those who want to close their ski resorts should have to compensate people whose revenue will disappear. That is unlikely to please politicians in the german capital who are worried about the spiraling costs of the pandemic here, particularly now that they have agreed to extend the current lockdown until just before christmas. Drug Company Astrazeneca is now considering running and other global trial for its Coronavirus Vaccine amid questions about its success rate. Oxford university, which partnered with the firm, says some of the trial injections did not have the right amount of vaccine due to a manufacturing error. The University Says it has discussed the problem and agreed to complete the late stage trial with two groups. The World Health Organizations executive director says a vaccine will allow for greater control but michael ryan warned a vaccine one not mean the virus is over. He appealed for continued physical distancing measures to avoid further lockdowns. I spoke to a vaccine allergist and Vice President have and Vice President at blue willow logix. He says people must continue to follow the rules. I think there is a big problem if we relax and say we have a vaccine and everything is ready and we can go out and start our life as it used to be. That is a kind of big mistake for everybody because having a vaccine is one thing and applying the vaccine to the community and to almost everybody is a huge task. That would take months. If we just relax today because we have the results from a clinical trial, that is something that should be managed well and we should not relax our behaviors and our practices. The vaccine itself although it is a it is very successful, the three vaccines including astrazeneca, there are still issues that need to be answered before we can get to the point where we say, ok, we need it. Giving the vaccine to 65 and older where we have a weakened immune system and therefore not having enough people in that category is a big problem because then that population will not benefit from a vaccine. Therefore, and they are the highest stress people around. It is and as you with regard it is an issue with regards to the 65 and older. The ethiopian Prime Minister has ordered a final offensive on the northern tiki region and says n a says a humanitarian corridor will be open to help those fleeing the conflict. He has ordered civilians to stay indoors. A government imposed deadline expired on wednesday. This follows three weeks of fighting with hundreds killed and tens of thousands displaced. Our reporter following developments from nairobi. He said the fighters had three days to lay down their arms ahead of what will be a final assault on the regional capital, which is a city of about half a Million People. We have heard conflicting claims from both sides about how close the federal forces are to the city. 70 kilometers, 50 kilometers, even as close as 30 kilometers. Have not heard any reports of shelling on the city. This is something rights organizations have expressed grave concern about because with a dense population of civilians, they say it will be dangerous if there is heavy fighting. Amnesty International Said shelling of the city could constitute a war crime. The statement from the Prime Ministers office said the federal government started giving out humanitarian assistance, food, water in the areas it controls. It is setting up four camps for displaced people. The u. N. Said more than 800,000 people in the region were dependent on humanitarian assistance even before this conflict began. Estimates an additional million will need assistance. Many people have been displaced by the fighting and some of the smooth fighting in some of the smaller sound smaller towns. They say it is not possible for the Partner Organizations to access these people and places. It is not known how many people need help or where they are. The u. N. Is warning of criticals critical aid shortages in tigre. It says fuel, cash and food are running out. Al jazeera is there with them. Where we are is not far from the order. It is where more than 15,000 refugees have arrived over the past three weeks. All of them saying they are escaping shellings, they are seeing people being slaughtered and have left family members behind. They say because of lack of telecommunication and lack of access to many parts of tigre, they cannot confirm whether their relatives are alive or not. Most of them say when they came here, they had to wait for more than a week to access 80 group to access aid. Groups say this is because the influx of refugees happened all of a sudden. A program said it had to get food from other programs in the country to be able to supply aid for the people who are here. More than 40,000 refugees have already crossed into the sudan side of the border. The biggest challenge comes when it comes to providing aid for those refugees. The fact that most of the roads are very difficult to access logistically. As not forget sudan had exceptional flood season a couple months ago where most of the roads were damaged. Aids groups say logistically speaking, moving many of their stocks to this area in response would be a rise of the refugees would be challenging and there are concerns there would be more than 200,000 refugees in sudan. Aid organizations say they are trying to step up so no refugee is left in aid. Still ahead on al jazeera, the winner of the elections in burkina faso. The opposition continues to question the legitimacy. Plus, a turkish vote hands down hundreds of life sentences length to the failed 2016 coup. Sentences linked to the failed 2016 coup. Hello again. Lets remind you of our top stories this hour. The funeral of a football legend has taken place at a cemetery in argentinas capital. The country has begun three days of National Mourning for the legendary footballer who died wednesday from a heart attack. Astrazeneca is considering running another global trial after it admitted its Coronavirus Vaccine needs further research. Oxford university, which partnered with the firm, said some of the trial injections did not have the right amount of vaccine due to a manufacturing error. Germany is imposing stricter lockdown measures as it struggles to suppress coronavirus infections. Chancellor Angela Merkel says infections are likely to continue into january and she is pushing for the e. U. To close down ski resorts over the winter holidays. Indian england will replace its locked down with a new system of regional tiers. Large parts of the country will still be under the strictest level. There is some frustration over how the rules have been applied. The end of the National Lockdown in england will not, a minute too soon for many people and livelihoods who have been impacted severely by the restrictions imposed upon them. There are winners and losers from the new system. Liverpool will come out of the highest level of restriction, that is tier three, a move down to tier two. London will stay in tier two. Manchester will stay in tier three. Only three areas will move to the lowest level of restrictions, tier one. Many other areas will move to tier two and tier three. This is kent. The garden of england as it is described. The county of kent in the southeast of england. Here, it will be tier three. That is causing a lot of angst because there is a big difference in infection rates from one end of the county to the other. Ramsgate has a rolling seven day average of around 570 infections per 100,000. Here in seven oaks, it is just 76 per 100,000. That has an impact because staying in tier three means restaurants like this, the restaurant behind me, has to stay close. They can only do take away. A massive impact on their business. Mps for the local area are not happy. Other people are also not happy. The government says it is necessary to stay on top of this infection. Millions of americans have been traveling over the thanksgiving holiday despite dire warnings from Health Experts urging them to stayathome. The u. S. Transportation Security Administration says nearly 6 Million People took flights from friday to wednesday. On wednesday, the day before the thanksgiving holiday, one Million People passed through airport security. On that day, the u. S. Reported 2400 deaths linked to covid19. Officials fear numbers will increase have urged people to scale back their celebrations. Lets speak to the founding chair of health law at georgetown university. We are looking at record numbers of infections across the country. Deaths are soaring. Our people intentionally disregarding advice by traveling or is this pandemic fatigue . It is a combination of a lot of things. I do not think there is will from those willfulness but it is clear from people all around the world that the you that the United States is bitterly divided. The simplest things Like Public Health warnings about masks or mass gatherings, all of these things are highly political. Literally just today, the u. S. Supreme Court Reversed itself and decided that new york state could not put a restriction on gatherings because it violated freedom of religion. And then there is fatigue. This is a really serious problem. The vaccine cannot come quickly enough for the United States. We are going to see tens upon tens of thousands of people dying in what are really preventable deaths. I remember when people ignore travel advice and went to the motorbike rally in august, that became a super spreader event across the midwest throughout the country. Do you think we should be bracing for something similar after thanksgiving given the travel trends we have been seeing . You will see far worse than that. That was just one mass event. This is millions of people traveling, getting together with family for celebrations. It is the american thanksgiving, which is our most celebrated and traveled holiday. People will be laughing, talking. They will be in indoor spaces because it is cold in parts of america. We are going to see we have already seen huge spikes in cases. That is going to be even more a concern in the days and weeks to come. Our hospitals are already at the brink. I can see many of our hospitals, particularly in rural areas, being overwhelmed. And this is now really just the start of the festive season. There is still christmas, new years and people trapped indoors because it is winter. What is the worstcase scenario in your mind . You know, the worstcase scenario is we will have 100,000 or more deaths between now and when the vaccine rolls out. I think basically, the Trump Administration has pretty much given up. The president almost never sees his task force. The federal government is in disarray. It is highly politicized. There is fatigue. People just want to go to restaurants, bars. They want to enjoy themselves. They went family celebrations. They see every restriction as a potential violation of their own freedom even though human beings are free to do things that may risk your own life but if you are risking someone elses life, an elderly neighbor or a family member, that is not freedom. That is just simply causing unnecessary death for others. Nobody has the freedom to harm other people. Professor lawrence from georgetown university. Thanks for being with us, professor. Thanks for having me. Take care. Hundreds of people have been given life sentences for attempting to topple turkeys government four years ago. It is one of the biggest cases related to the failed coup during which more than 250 people were killed. It is a case that has taken four years to conclude. This court acquitted 70 people before it sentenced 310 military officers and civilians to life in prison. They were all facing charges stemming from a failed military coup in 2016. A total of 475 defendants were tried for running the coup from northwest of the capital. Prosecutors say that is where 16 fighter jets took off and flew over ankara, sending out sonic booms for attacking parliament and other government buildings. This trial of four years was pointless. This course pet that this court passed its verdicts without keeping any statements or evidence into consideration. We are not happy with this verdict. I went the turkish people to be sensitive about this. Defendants were charged with a long list of crimes from murder and attempts to violate the Constitution Order to an assassination attempt targeting president erdogan. The number one defendant was a u. S. Based turkish figure who the authorities blame for the failed coup. He and others will have a separate trial because they live abroad. The trial also brings charges against socalled civilian imams , accused of being the coordinators. According to the indictment, they had direct talks on the night of the failed to to receive orders and pass them along to the military members. Ethnic crimes were detected by the court. We expect defendants to apologize to the turkish nation and the family members of the victims. We did not see any sign of regret. The failed coup killed 250 people and injured nearly 2200 others. Top military brass including the chief of general staff were held hostage. The government has arrested nearly 8000 people. More than 130,000 people including villa terry personnel have either been sacked including military personnel have either been sacked or suspended from their jobs. Defendants are not happy with the ruling but the families of the victims had wanted the sentences. Many people in turkey believe the Court Decision could serve as a lesson to those who intend to harm the Constitutional Order in a country that has bitter experiences with military coups in its modern history. Burkina fasos president has promised to move the country forward after he was reelected for another fiveyear term. He has secured 1. 6 million votes of the nearly 3 million cast. Opposition parties say the boat was marked by fraud and is threatening to reject the results. Hundreds of thousands of people were unable to vote because of fears of violence. I welcome the announcement of the provisional results of the president ial elections of 2020. I would like to thank all at home and abroad for the commitment and faith they have any democracy. This election is historic for many reasons. First is the context in which it was held. Secondly, it is the first time people in the diaspora have participated in the elections. The u. N. Agency for Palestinian Refugees says for the first time in history, it has run
