Scotland, England and Wales will get their chance later, but the opening series of This Union: A Sea Between Us is an attempt to take the temperature of Northern Irish politics by someone who grew up during the worst of the Troubles. Specifically, Catherwood is looking at unionism at a time of huge turmoil thanks to Brexit, the Northern Ireland Protocol and political in-fighting within the DUP. All this in the country’s centenary year. Some birthday. In this first episode Catherwood, who herself grew up in Belfast during the Troubles, looked specifically at loyalism. There is always a danger that loyalism is conflated with unionism. They can overlap but they are not necessarily the same thing. Catherwood didn’t fall into that trap. Instead, she painted a portrait of a divided, angry group, predated on by gangsters calling themselves paramilitaries.
