Updated: 4:13 PM CST Jan 18, 2021 KMBC 9 News Staff Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid confirmed Monday that quarterback Patrick Mahomes is in the NFL’s concussion protocol."We'll follow that and see how he does the next couple of days," Reid said during his Monday media availability. The Chiefs are scheduled to return to practice Wednesday, and Mahomes will have to clear the league’s five-step process to be available to play in Sunday’s AFC Championship game against the Buffalo Bills at Arrowhead Stadium. The graphic below details the steps Mahomes must go through to return to the practice field and potentially play.Carrington Harrison of 610 Sports in Kansas City is reporting that sources have told him that Mahomes' injury was not injury concussion related.“Patrick passed all of his tests last night,” Harrison said in a tweet. “He didn’t actually hit his head, there was a nerve in his neck that got tweaked that made him out of it. He’s getting testing done on his neck/nerve today but did clear all tests last night.”Sunday night the roughly 17,000 fans allowed into Arrowhead Stadium were left sitting in stunned silence when Mahomes was tackled around the head with 7:27 left in the quarter and was left crumpled on the turf near midfield.Mahomes, already hobbled by a foot injury, stumbled as he tried to get to his feet. He was eventually helped to the blue tent on the sideline, then ran to the locker room, where he was evaluated for a concussion. In Mahomes’ absence, the Chiefs were able to hold on for the 22-17 victory over the Browns, and it was Chad Henne, Mahomes’ backup, who made two clutch plays in the final two minutes of the game.
