Maine private beaches: Moody Beach access fight challenges p

WELLS, Maine — Beachfront property owners up and down Maine's coast may want to pay close attention to a new lawsuit that aims to reclaim some private beach areas for public access.
Benjamin E. Ford, a partner in the new Portland-based law firm Archipelago Law, said he filed the lawsuit Thursday in an effort to overturn a decision made three decades ago by the Maine Supreme Judicial Court. That decision, Ford said, was "an historical mistake" that "locked away thousands of miles of the Maine coast."
"The Maine Supreme Court’s decision in the so-called Moody Beach cases has led to nothing but confusion, conflict, and ridiculous litigation over whether seaweed is more like a worm or a tree," Ford said in a statement. "This mess was created by lawyers and judges and it needs to be fixed by lawyers and judges.”
