Escalona and FBI Special Agent in Charge Johnnie Sharp, Jr. Ward had multiple prior felony convictions in state court, including convictions for first-degree robbery, first-degree assault that happened during a 2012 burglary. The carjacking happened Dec. 6, 2018. It all began that Thursday morning when a woman contacted Birmingham police to report her car had been stolen while she was inside a convenience store on Fourth Avenue in Birmingham. The victim’s phone was inside the vehicle and she was able to track its movements via a phone tracking app.
