Well, this appears to be what the Saskatchewan Party government is seriously contemplating. It begs the question: Why? It’s a question that carries a lot of political baggage. Any messing around with the Crown corporations by this administration is bound to stir dormant speculation that something is brewing regarding privatization — poison to the Sask. Party’s own brand, given its lineage going back to the privatization-happy 1980s Progressive Conservatives. To be clear, government officials say there are no privatization plans. Really, there’s no reason to think such rebranding is a precursor to privatization. (It is, however, worth noting SaskOil — the former energy Crown corporation — had its name changed to Wascana Energy prior to its privatization. It’s even more noteworthy that this was done by the former NDP government.)
