Nationals Senator Matt Canavan says lockdowns do not seem to play a “critical” role in stopping the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.
At least four lockdowns have been introduced in states across the country since Christmas in the wake of small outbreaks.
Mr Canavan told Sky News, “We only had a three-day lockdown in the last few weeks in Brisbane while infected people had been around for weeks but we hadn’t had a significant spread."
“I just don’t think we should be bearing the cost of billions of dollars of lockdowns for what doesn’t seem to be a big payoff in terms of lack of spread,” he said.
