As a University of Pittsburgh alumna, I wanted to respond to the Feb. 22 article “Report Under Review by Pitt Trustees to Decide Future of Energy Divestment.” This board review is an exciting opportunity for one of the pillars of the Pittsburgh community to make a meaningful move — one that will likely inspire hearts and minds of a nation of young people.
We can do it without fossil fuel dependence. And it can be done without damage to the economy. Concerned Pittsburgh volunteers are working hard to raise awareness around the Energy Innovation and Climate Dividend Act, legislation to implement a price on carbon while protecting the economic well-being of citizens. This bipartisan legislation will put a gradually rising price on pollution, with almost all of the revenue going back to ratepayers in the form of dividends, which will exceed the fees for most families by 2050. A household impact study released in August found that among households in the lowest fifth economically, 96% would receive “carbon dividends” that exceed their carbon costs.
