Melrose Public Schools seeing enrollment rising in coming fall

Enrollment in the Melrose schools is projected to jump from 3,704 from the June 2021 to 3,887 in September, primarily through increases in Pre-K, Kindergarten and first grade.
“It’s an important data source for us to monitor,” Superintendent Julie Kukenberger said at the June 22 School Committee meeting, adding the numbers will affect staffing, supplies, and state aid among other things.
The population will rise from 454-511 in Pre-K and Kindergarten; 1,528-1,558 in elementary grades 1-5; 819-846 at the Middle School and 915-965 at the High School.
The number of students in Kindergarten through Grade 6 are the highest, with 315 in Kindergarten, 317 in Grade 1; 290 in 2; 308 in 3; 326 in 4; 317 in 5 and 292 in 6.
