Share Updated: 10:13 AM CDT Apr 22, 2021 It's Earth Day, and what better way to celebrate than joining more than 2,000 other people to help clean up our city. Milwaukee Riverkeeper's 26th annual Spring Cleanup is scheduled for Saturday. The pandemic is changing the event this year. All volunteers are asked to preregister, and registration is capped at 3,000 people.Start times are varied for volunteers. In previous years, 4,000 volunteers picked up nearly 100,000 pounds of trash. Even with the reduced number of volunteers, Milwaukee Riverkeeper is hopeful that this years volunteers will still be able to pick up just as much trash. "With this year and the amount of to-go containers and mail-order packages. We see how desperately our river systems need some help and beautification ad restoration," said Jennifer Bolger Breceda with Milwaukee Riverkeeper. This is all part of a larger event across the great lakes region, with a goal to remove 68 metric tons of waste by the end of next year.Registration for the spring cleanup is open through Earth Day.
