More in Mass. taking advantage of walk-in COVID-19 vaccination clinics

More people in Massachusetts appear to be taking advantage of the state’s increased focus on walk-in vaccination clinics. On May 10, all seven of the state’s mass COVID-19 vaccination sites started offering walk-in service. Gov. Charlie Baker also began shifting more vaccine doses to smaller settings such as regional collaboratives, pharmacies and doctors’ offices.Union Pharmacy in Newton has about 60 people per day walking in either to receive a COVID-19 vaccine or to make a vaccination appointment.“I tried to schedule my initial one sort of using (online) scheduling, and my first vaccine would have been today. And here I am using walk-in and I got my second one already,” said Mike Silvestri, who got both doses of the COVID-19 vaccine at Union Pharmacy along with his wife, Liza.“We’re excited to be able to be freer,” Liza Silvestri said. Anthony Petrillo, a pharmacy intern at Union, says Baker’s decision to drop all of the state’s COVID-19 restrictions on May 29 could be influencing more people to get vaccinated against the coronavirus.“They’re just coming in to get it, maybe, because friends are urging them to. Or maybe some people feel like since because the mask mandate is being lifted soon and as things open up, they want to be as safe as possible,” Petrillo said.As of Wednesday, about 3.29 million people in Massachusetts are fully vaccinated against COVID-19, according to the state’s Department of Public Health. However, data from the DPH also shows that the number of people getting COVID-19 vaccines in the state has been dipping over the last month. On April 28, the seven-day average of COVID-19 vaccine doses administered in the state was greater than 87,000. By May 18, that average dropped to more than 51,000.“We acknowledge that as we vaccinate more and more people, we expect that number to go down,” said Dr. Gabriela Andujar Vazquez, associate hospital epidemiologist at Tufts Medical Center in Boston.Andujar Vazquez also says it is important to note that the state’s COVID-19 cases are also dropping fast, decreasing the chances of new infections.“By May 29, it’s expected that the cases are going to be so low and our vaccination rates are going to be high, that we will be safe in different environments, even if we don’t know the vaccination status of other people,” she said.Baker says he believes Massachusetts is on track to fully vaccinate more than 4 million people against COVID-19 by the beginning of June.Massachusetts vaccination progressMassachusetts COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations and fatalities
