Morgan Sindall has been picked to build a £28m rockfall shelter as part of the rail upgrade in Dawlish, Devon. Morgan Sindall Infrastructure has been appointed by Network Rail as main contractor for the shelter, which will be built between Dawlish and Holcombe and will protect trains from falling rocks. Local suppliers are expected to form the main bulk of the spend on the project. The contractor will start construction of the 209 metre-long extension north of Parsons Tunnel in August with the project expected to take a year to complete. Parsons Tunnel was previously extended 100 years ago and this project will extend that further by providing a rockfall shelter in modern materials, but with open sides rather than a brick-built enclosed tunnel extension.
