MPs call for equal remediation funds access for social housing providers

Social housing providers should be given “full and equal access” to government funds for remediating buildings with fire safety defects, an influential government committee has found.
The housing, communities and local government committee has been told that because of restrictions on accessing current support, local government funds are being "diverted to remediation work that would otherwise be invested in repairing and maintaining existing homes and building more social housing”.
The committee heard that currently, social housing providers cannot access support for properties where there are tenants rather than leaseholders.
A report from the committee today warns that the £5.1bn so far allocated by the government to the building safety fund “does not go far enough”, warning that the total cost of fully remediating affected buildings could be up to £15bn.
