Crews have been on the scene for almost 24 hours now using extra caution tools, their hands, search dogs, microphones. Earlier today, a boy who was trapped in the debris was pulled out alive. For the very latest we are joined tonight by telephone by Charles Berke yet, the mayor of surfside, florida. Hes joining us by telephone because the weather has turned so severe we can get a tv signal out of there. Which means, think of the underground rescue effort, it will be slow down and hampered by rainfall. Mister mayor, ive been watching you on television all day, i think we are pretty close to the same age. When i woke up this morning, saw the pictures in your town, i thought of the Marine Barracks bombing them. I thought of oklahoma city, and then i seen your comment all day long, buildings dont fall down like this in america. Obviously, there is that investigation. But update us tonight on the search for living souls. Youre right about the rain, its heartbreaking now that it is slowing us down and we dont have time to be slowed down. The rain has stopped, thank god. We will pick it up and we will continue until we are finished. We will just keep going. You are right, these buildings do not fall down like this in first world countries. This is a third world event. We need to understand why this happened, but now is not the time for that. We need to focus on getting people out alive of this. Your lifes work, if im not mistaken, you came from the building and Property Management industry. So this is not a unfamiliar topic for you. What is the chance that we you had a slowmoving Underground Sink hold underneath this building known to know one until now . Listen, that is a very plausible theory. There are several plausible theories. Again, this was a catastrophic failure. We were not aware of any signs of this in advance. So that is why it is so crushing for us to have this happen. I woke up this morning i thought i was going to see a balcony that had fallen off. I never imagined i would see half the building in a pile. And it is something we know whenever expected. It is actually, it has left me speechless. Were dealing with it, the counties here, the white house has called. We have both our u. S. Senators called. We had one of the u. S. Senators here, we have the governor here, we walked the property with him. Theyve all committed to helping us and theyre not just talking the talk, they are walking the walk. We had Governor Desantis as well as i said, weve had mayor coppa here from the county law. Who has flooded us with resources. We have had no lack of resources. The only thing weve had a lack of is luck. We can find some people alive in the debris, and thats exactly what were doing. Were just crossing our fingers and looking as hard as we can, as fast as we can. Last question, i know youre looking for things to feel fortunate about and i have to say all the disasters we cover, miami day fire rescue, their search teams are often the first to arrive anywhere in the country, there is so good at what they do. They are on the job along with a lot of help. I know they stop every few minutes to have silence on the site to try to listen for survivors inside. I guess tonight for everyone watching, we are in the business of hoping for air pockets. Hoping that concrete and rebar held up and there are people in there just waiting on us to get the them. Listen, you said it exactly right. Those guys, i mean, were gonna have our day with on those guys, there are heroes. The building was an imminent danger of collapse. These guys didnt think twice, they went up in the building, they checked every single apartment in that building. Knowing that the building could collapse any minute. Knowing that that building could come down at any minute. It is astounding to me that we have such brave guys on our team. And you are right about that, there is nobody the better than this miami responders team. We have a lot of work in front of us. Wherever people are running out of this country, First Responders are inevitably running in. Mister mayor, we cannot thank you enough for pivoting and joining us by telephone tonight. We are all Thinking Of You and the souls inside that structure, and your city. Best of luck, we will be watching from afar. Mare the charles bigot from surfside, florida. We will talk about this later in our hour. For now we want to turn our focus to washington, in a rare sight today. A smiling president and ten senators from both parties, emerging in the white house driveway to announce their agreement on a bipartisan infrastructure plan. The we have a deal. And look i think its really important, we have all the grade that none of us got what we wanted. This reminds me of the days we used to get an awful lot done in congress. Plan will cost just over a trillion dollars to be spent over eight years time, there is still a lot of over hurdles to overcome. The democrats were in the agreement will only move forward if it is paired with a march larger package of spending tax increases which republicans say they will never agree to. I expect, i expect that in the coming months this summer with that before the fiscal year is over, that we will have voted on this bill as well as the as well as voted on the budget resolution. If only one comes to me, that i am not signing it. It is attend. We at the end or end of town, pelosi also stressed both bills must be passed together. There is not going to be an Infrastructure Bill unless we have the reconciliation bill. Passed by the United States senate. With speaker also confirmed today she intends to create a House Select Committee to investigate the won six riot insurrection and desecration of our capital. Last month, you recall, senator republicans blocked the last chance of signing a bipartisan commission. Justice department revealed today at least 500 arrests now have been made in connection with one six. And as of tonight, Rudy Giuliani, once one of the most feared prosecutors in our country, former mayor of New York City, former trump attorney, Cannot Practice Law in new york. He had his license in law suspended. He made demonstrably false statements while fighting to reverse the 2020 election results. Heres how giuliani responded. They listen to the false allegations that are made by the democrats. If im under investigation, fine. Thats not american. Thats what they do and dictatorships trump came to his defense in the statement defended his friend saying, the elliottness of his generation he also ended the statement with. Take back america. Tonight were also looking ahead to some major developments expected tomorrow, Vice President harris make surface trip to the southern border as Vice President. Shes visiting el paso, texas. Republicans have repeatedly criticized her for not visiting the region in office. And in minnesota, former Police Officer Derek Chauvin is sentenced tomorrow for the murder of george floyd. Prosecutors have asked for 30 years, his lawyers want him to get off with just probation. With all that lets bring our lead off guests tonight, peter baker the veteran journalist and author. He is chief White House Correspondent for the new york times. Michelle sender for pbs news our, moderator of Washington Week on pbs in her spare time. And former u. S. Attorney joyce vance who spent 25 years as federal prosecutor, also one cohost of our podcast sisters in law, with Kimberly Atkins store, barbara mcquade. Good evening, welcome to you all, peter ill start with you. Our lead story tonight happens to be while not federal, infrastructure in this country nonetheless. It will be harrowing and interesting investigation into what happened in florida. Is the white house confident that on their uber approach on the federal bill, their approach to it has agreed to today the carry them through today is going to work . Its a bit of a High Wire Act still. Obviously the president was very happy today. You saw that in his demeanor. He was probably the happiest day that since he took office. He said he could buy deliver a bipartisan agreement which a country that has been so divided along party lines. Thats a big deal for him. But by the time you get to this reconciliation bill, that is to say, a bill that will almost get democrats social spending and Democrat Bill programs that you would like to pass, creates a little bit of a danger zone ahead. We dont know whether that is going to be something can pass or not. It works if republicans were to say, fine, go ahead with that and ill vote against it and if i vote against will be politically beneficial for me anyways. But if they hold hostage because of that we can be in for a lot of difficult negotiation in the weeks ahead. The reason why speaking to pelosi is underscoring this they, have pressure from the left which is already upset that the president is compromising. Compromise is not a good thing because it means youre giving up some of the priorities you held out in the beginning. And, you mitch, to pick up on peters last point, compromise is something the president knows well and speaks of warmly. What does this framework, this Agreement Jew for joe biden in the city you cover so well . This Infrastructure Deal is bipartisan Infrastructure Deal is with President Biden catching his white whale. The white house were saying that they were wasting their time negotiating of four weeks over this Infrastructure Deal. This is President Biden saying you can compromise, you can move something through congress by giving up a little bit and getting a little bit from the other side. So this is where President Biden in some ways really underscores the thing that he bet on which was bipartisanship and reaching across the aisle it works. He saying that he hopes that will compromise has to happen for things to work. They say, just look at the New York City meryl likes, look at the democrats winning in louisiana and virginia. He saying yes, the parties divided, but it needs to be rational in order to get things done. This is but this deal really does and says. The president was very jubilant, weve seen a very rare white house drive way appearance. Joyce vance take us to the law. Tell the folks watching what it means to get your law license suspended in the city where you were ones among the most feared federal prosecutors in the United States . We this is an extraordinary fall from grace, brian. This is the kind of thing that lawyers are cautioned against in law school. And as a brandnew member of the bar, youre right, shiny license to practice, you take so much care to avoid even at inadvertently in falling into the kind of territory that Rudy Giuliani found himself in. This is an unrelenting opinion issued by the disciplining authority in new york state. It comes from the appellate division, not this start bar association, as you would in the many states. There is uncontroversial evidence that giuliani made false and misleading statements, to courts, to legislative for knees, to the American People, that made it difficult for people to have confidence in the outcome of the election. Its important that those allegations are uncontroversial, that means that they take the mistruth that giuliani has done nothing to disprove them although he had the opportunity to because the fact that they are so blatantly true combined with the fact that julianna can we pose danger to the community is wet warranted the action today. Suspending his license to practice law. That interim suspension is really remarkable and the one thing that i would say that is so important in this thing is with a footnote for in this opinion about giuliani and points out that when he was given the opportunity to defend his comments and their truth, he didnt. He, instead, referred to a small sorts of alpha davids that he could not they conclude we, dont know why a private citizen like giuliani would have access to confidential documents. So there is no reason to believe that this will not result in disbarment. Peter baker, back to politics, we go to your beat and a fellow member of the White House Press corps that you and i know Walter Bender from the wall street journal, he has been Repeat Reporting from his new book on the trump white house. This particularly is on our summer of protests in the streets. He writes, quoting the president here, thats how youre supposed to handle these people, trump told his top Law Enforcement and military officials, crack their skulls trump also told his team that he wanted the military to go in and beat the out of the civil rights protesters, bender rights. Just truth them. Trump said on multiple occasions in the awful office according to the excerpts. We peter, talk about the combination of the sitting president back then and how chaotic that summer was inside the west wing. Well i think this book by Michael Bender pulls the curtain back on what we were seeing this summer out loud. Even what we saw the president say in public, obviously even more private. That he was not just running on this idea of law in order and dismissing Peaceful Protesters as violent and making them violent protesters and suggesting legal action against them. He was railing at his military, he was railing at his aides. The tension that was there, with the military, which is not believed its role is to be in the streets of American Cities enforcing the law, was a huge Friction Point between this past white house and the pentagon. So i think youre seeing in these excerpts a little bit of the back story about was really going on there. We had a Commander In Chief who was basically a withstanding to crack down as we will we piling in peaceful, and the military that was resisting it. General milley will you mitch, will we know about the pelosi announcement about the select committee that the question so many people want answered, well they have the power to compel with this compel testimony . It seems as though the details are still coming together. Theres a lot of reporting that this was going to happen because, as we all remember, republicans refusing, and have refused, to reinvestigate what happened on january 6th. The question is, who are they going to be able to pull into congress, are they gonna be able to force people at times to be able to answer questions about all the Different Things that we still dont know. Including how involved was the president , how involved were republicans, did anybody give these people masks, did anybody understand exactly how bad this was gonna be . They understand that theyre gonna try to hang mike pence and try to kill 90 pelosi . I think theyre a lot of questions to the answer here. Almost every month we see a new video of these people, and of course these cases are going through the course. Something like 500 arrests have been made. So i think there are real questions here. Nancy police suit seems as though shes trying to get to the bottom of a lot of them. Joyce another reason why were happy to have you tonight is a preview of tomorrows chauvin sentencing. A maximum of 30 years, his lawyers just want parole. What aggravating circumstances will the judge be looking at to form his Sentence Recommendation . With the judge found based on pleadings that were filed that there are aggravating circumstances. That means, youll forgive me for saying this, it is not a Garden Variety of second degree, third degree murder. There are factors that she would not find present in another murder that makes this penis. For example, committing this murder in the presence of young children. The judge will consider these factors as he decides what sentence he should give. He has a lot of discretion here. Judge cahill has a reputation of being a moderate sentence are. But this may be a case that will call for something more. One of the big issues tomorrow is whether we will see chauvin trying to defend himself. He has the opportunity to make a statement. He has not been a very sympathetic figure and these proceedings, so i think there is some legitimate question about whether he can do more damage than good to himself by speaking tomorrow. But the countrys eyes will be on the sentence. There is no possibility of justice. You cannot bring george floyd back to his family. But the sentence can bring a measure of accountability and help to send the standard going forward. So i think this will be a very important, perhaps more so than usual, sentence not only to the defendant but also to all of us who will be watching. On a busy night, we are indebted to our starting line this evening, peter baker, calm yamiche and joyce vance, thank you for being with us. Today a rare display of bipartisanship. Was that . It will there be more . And now what . We will be talking about the rough road ahead. And later, defund the pentagon . A former four star u. S. Army general weighs in with us tonight on the mismatch between the florida congressman and the chairman of the joint chiefs. And what it is like to fox we use anchors to attack the u. S. Military . The 11th hour is just getting underway on this busy thursday night. Wey thursday night. We dad, why didnt you answer your phone . Your mother loved this park. She did. Delicia this is where all our recycling is sorted 1. 2 Million Pound
