Arraignment week. All eyes will be split between atlanta and, d. C. This, week in georgia on wednesday, arraignment day for the 19 defendants and the case led by Fulton County d. A. Fani willis. Trump pleaded not guilty and 11 of his codefendants waived their right to a day in court. Meanwhile, key witness and former white house Chief Of Staff mark meadows is waiting to hear if his georgia case will move up to Federal Court. And the Georgia Special grand jury report is set to be released on friday. Trump, by the way, it is fundraising like crazy off his mugshot. I want to know who are those people who give money to the socalled billionaire so he can cover his Legal Expenses . Oh, and in case you were wondering, a recent Wall Street Journal poll of republicans put trumps support, a stunning 46 higher than the second place ron desantis. And in our nations capital, congress will begin to return to work in washington on tuesday, with just a few more days until another possible government shutdown. After the Congressional Black Caucus announced Black Americans are being attacked in various ways nationwide and when republicans are leading these efforts. Thats where we start today. Joining me now is the chair of the black caucus, Congressman Steve is horsford, democrat of nevada. Congressman, mister chairman, the Congressional Black Caucus has announced last week Black Americans are being attacked in various ways nationwide with republicans leading the effort. We spoke at the state of black america, president of the capital, you spoke in washington, recent events in several gop led State Legislatures have intensified your concerns, you said. Please elaborate. Well, reverend sharpton, it is great to be with you. And congratulations to you and to the king family for the continuation march, the 60th Anniversary March On Washington last saturday. It was definitely the impetus for the work that continues. With your leadership and the leadership of so many other civil rights leaders, we are going to realize doctor kings dream. As you know, the attacks on everything from our democracy to womens rights to make Health Care Decisions about their own bodies, to the attacks on blackness with the latest from ed bloom and his alliance, dealing with the lawsuit against the fearless fund, which is a Venture Capital fund to support black women entrepreneurs. This is the latest attack attacking black Business People who are trying to create wealth for themselves and their families and the black community. Despite the fact that only 1 of that funding from Venture Capital is actually with black businesses and black Venture Capital firms. And black vso its very alarmi. These attacks are coordinated, they are well funded, and clearly ed bloom is behind it, and hes been behind the latest lawsuits on Affirmative Action. He was behind the roe v. Wade attacks. We have to call it out the way it is. We have to say who was impeding our progress in this moment. But we are not going back. We are not going to be silenced, and we are going to continue to advance a legislative agenda this congress. And as we were marching last saturday, you had the racial killings in jacksonville, florida. You had, as you say, ed bloom, Stephen Miller is part of that, that has declared war in terms of not only what they want in that Supreme Court decision in terms of college admissions, but on businesses and law firms, saying you cant have programs specifically to deal with having blacks and people of color elevated or given contracts. And then yesterday, on politicsnation, right here on this show, we had gop president ial candidate vivek ramaswamy. I want you to listen as he answered what i asked him about Affirmative Action and diversity programs. Listen to this. I want to make sure kids arent trapped in the ghetto of a zip code that they happen to be born in. To the contrary, i think every parent deserves to have the opportunity to send their kids to the best possible school. Thats why i favor radical School Choice in this country. I think its a mystery, reverend sharpton, there are people who will wax eloquent about systemic racism, they are also the ones who are opposed to educational mobility. Thats why ive said, shut down the u. S. Department of education. Use that 80 billion dollars, put it in the hands of parents, so they can actually send their kids to that best possible school they can. I asked you about Affirmative Action and i asked you about business and bloom and them coming, he pivoted over to talk about Charter Schools and education, which not only says a lot about how he tries to dunk and weave, and i would not let him do it on the show, but it also shows they are trying to build straw men up rather than deal with the issues. One of the things ive seen the congressional caucus and do under your leadership is trying to focus on exact issues, legislation, and policy. Well your interview was spot on. I wish the candidate would just really get out of the way because he is the what who is stoking these racial tensions in our country. For him to make comparisons to members of congress, i own congresswoman Ayanna Pressley and the kkk is outrageous its irresponsible and its dangerous. Its the kind of rhetoric that led to the Mass Shooting in jacksonville, florida, which Governor Desantis helped stoke with his rhetoric. But as you said, while we fight these attacks on the extreme right, but we also have to put forward an affirmative agenda to help lift up Black Americans. When we lift up black america, we lift up everyone. As you know, we have the Congressional Black Caucus and a legislative Policy Conference coming up in washington, d. C. , Starting September 20th through the 24th. During that conference, were going to position not only democracy and race, but economic mobility and Wealth Creation. At a time when black people are under attack, we want to talk about race to advance wages, work, and wealth. With partnerships, with the Biden Economic alliance, with the work that the National Urban league and the National Action network are doing under your leadership, we can put forward an affirmative agenda that moves black America Forward through jobs, better paying jobs, through Small Business creation, and through Wealth Creation for black families and black communities. Now, this past monday, together with the king family and other civil rights leaders, i want to meet with President Biden and Vice President harris at the white house, on the day, the actual day of the 60th Anniversary of the march on washington. Kennedy met with March Leaders 60 years ago when President Biden and Vice President harris 60 years later, that tradition. You spoke at the march, of course. I was there, obviously, as the head of the National Action network. I called on President Biden to hold the next hate summit the summer of hate crimes we did the first one of the white house last summer. Lets hold it in in front, after the recent shooting there that killed three innocent blacks, and in fact, today, i heard and saw that there was a rally of neonazis in orlando yesterday. King called me and talked about that early this morning. How ready is the black caucus to push on legislation on this matter, of hate crimes and enforcing of hate crimes . Well, look, the proud boys and groups like them have been named by Homeland Security as the single biggest threat to domestic security. Security. And they are a domestic terrorist organization. Youve seen the indictments that have come down, and the latest charges that have been made, as well as the sentencing. But specifically, as it pertains to florida, here you have Governor Desantis, the same governor who has tried to erode black history, to try to rewrite black history with slavery was somehow some kind of a work program that provided benefits to enslaved people. And then he wants to show up at the Candlelight Vigil for the families and the community that was mourning the very deaths of the individuals because of a racist attack on their community by a white supremacist. The Congressional Black Caucus has been and we will continue to fight to make sure that those who are responsible for these attacks, whether it is on our democracy or whether its on our blackness, are held accountable. We dont care who they are, including the former president of the united states. They must be held accountable. All right. Im going to have to leave it there. Im out of time. But thank, you and thank you for all you are doing, Congressman Steven horsford, chair of the Congressional Black Caucus. Joining me now is chicago mayor brandon johnson. Mister mayor, thank you for being with us. I want to go to another report, released on tuesday by the center for study of hate and extremism, at California State University in san bernardino. It found most of the nations ten largest cities had significant and recordbreaking jumps in hate crimes in 2022 for the second Straight Year, for the second Straight Year also chicago had the most significant rise in hate crimes over and 84 increase. You were elected mayor of chicago this year. This data is from the previous two years. I want to be sure to also mention that as a summer has come to an end, new data shows chicago murder rates are down by 21 from 2021. However, i want you i want to get your reaction to this Hate Crime Data that preceded you by just about a few months, and how concerned are you that chicago is also leading in American Cities in dealing with hate crimes, as you seemed are effectively dealing with crime . Thank, you reverend sharpton, for your leadership and again for having the audacity to lead with so much boldness. We do appreciate that here in chicago. We miss you. Thank you. Look, it is clear that the entire country is suffering from this overwhelming divisive presentation that is being propagated by the Political Forces that clearly have not accepted the results of the civil war. In fact, it is evident that many of these leaders want a rematch. As you know, the history of antiblackness, particularly in chicago, finds its roots that were planted a very long time ago when reverend Martin Luther king junior came to the city of chicago. He described it like no other place on the planet. Again, unfortunately, because weve had these systems that, quite frankly, have demonstrated antiblackness over the course of decades, whether its closing down Public Schools, whether its shattering public housing, shutting down Mental Health clinics, that theres been a practice of systems that have demonstrated hatred and animus towards black existence. D animus but im grateful that the multi cultural Generational Movement that propelled in organizer, a former Public School teacher, a middle child of ten some siblings to the fifth floor, a better, stronger, more united chicago is certainly has arrived. As youve indicated, weve been working incredibly hard with a multi tiered, layered approach at the full force of government to invest in people to create a stronger, safer chicago. Im grateful we have community partners, the civil rights community, the faith community, and of course my administration thats working to ultimately build a better, stronger, and much safer chicago. To follow up on that, the recent killing of three black people in jacksonville, florida, has drawn attention to the grim reality that researchers have long gotten to. Black americans are the most frequent victims of racially motivated hate crimes in the united states. There is a report that i mention confirms the trend showing black people where the targets of more than one fifth of all hate crimes and that were reported in major American Cities last year. The highest year of any other group. Chicago is about a third black, according to u. S. Census bureau data. What do you think is fueling the rise of violence that targets Black Americans specifically . And an that, how do you, as a newly elected mayor, major city, an activist as you came in, deal with the potential hate crimes remaining your city, and the black crime that is being perpetrated on each other with violence . You brought it down, but its still there. Youve got a double kind of assignment here that you have to battle out. We certainly have a lot of work in front of. Us but theres not a challenge thats too big for the city of chicago. Quite frankly, for this country. Weve overcome challenges before. Vicious attacks against black people, just a couple of days ago i declared August 30th Chairman fred hampton senior day here in the city of chicago. Wow. You know he was on the frontline fighting for black liberation. He understood that black liberation had a Ripple Impact on other people groups. Its that same spirit that, quite frankly, that we have revived in the city of chicago to, one, make sure we are partnering with, again, our faith community, our philanthropic community. We have major corporations stepping up along with the full force of government to make critical investments into communities that have long been starved. Whether its the former president , trump, igniting his insurrection and an attack against our democracy or whether it is the fact that for every 1 that a white family earns, a black family earns one sent, these systems of oppression have gone unchecked for a very long time. But again, im grateful that we have a new superintendent that will be confirmed, chief larry snelling, who is the proud son of englewood. Hes gone up through the ranks for the first time in the history of chicago. We have a deputy mayor devoted to community safety. And again, we have so many individuals around this city, quite frankly around the country, that continue to ask the most dynamic question. What can we do to help . That is what its going to, take reverend al, in order for us to build a better, stronger, safer america. We need to bring people together. Not subject ourselves to the type of visceral hatred that has been promulgated against black folks, asians, our jewish brothers and sisters, the lgbtq community. All these different groups that have suffered under tyranny and suffered under disinvestment and hatred that the city of chicago is very much committed to transformation. Im grateful to be in a position where, one, again, full force of government to deal with community safety. Number two, there is a major piece of legislation called treatment, not trauma. Its going to provide Mental Health professionals to shop the crises where Mental Health professionals are needed. Three, we are also making sure we raise new revenue, bring chicago home to deal with the unhoused crisis here in the city of chicago that is affecting the entire country. These last 112 days, we certainly have not totally disrupted decades of systemic racism and oppression, but we certainly have laid the foundation to build the apparatus to build a better, stronger, and much safer chicago. Chicago mayor brandon johnson, its been 112 days, it hasnt put any of the fire has barely out yet. Thank you for moving on. Coming, up a new school year is underway and its time to rise up and push against radical rightwing politics in the classroom. But, first my colleague richard lui with todays other top news stories. Richard . Thank, you reverend. A very good sunday to you. Officials are saying death is being investigated at the burning man festival. The annual Music Festival in the nevada desert, the persons identity was not released yet.
