I dont intend on voting for a republican speaker of the house. I believe its up to the Republican Congress to determine their own leadership. Its not up to democrats to save republicans. Talk us through the strategy of matt gaetz, who else is on board what he wants to do, raising this motion to vacate, and what we are looking at what a timeline is. Like thats the big question. Who exactly is on board with matt gaetz . He only needs about four other republicans to join him. The vote requires a simple majority. If all democrats vote against, did not helping mccarthy but not helping matt gaetz either, or even if they vote president , those are different strategies that are at play here. Matt gaetz has the burden to proof here with getting enough republicans on his side to make this up and. I talked to some of the hardliners, including congressman Byron Donalds yesterday. He is the one who offered the conservative Stopgap Funding Measure initially that gaetz essentially led the charge in preventing happen. Donald is not pleased with mccarthy. He ended up putting this clean spending measure on the floor, relying on those democratic votes. He did not necessarily say he is for gaetz either. This is going to be on gaetz to prove. For now, Speaker Mccarthy says to bring it on. Watch this. He says hes coming for you. Can you survive . Yes, i will survive. This is personal with matt. He voted against the most conservative ability to protect our border, secure our border. Hes more interested in securing tv interviews. He wanted to push us into a shut down. Even threatening his own district with all the military people there who would not be paid only because he wants to take this motion, lets get over with it and stop gardening. There is nothing stopping him from doing it again and again if it fails this time around and holding this Over Mccarthy said. Remember that this is a rule that mccarthy negotiated with gaetz and other members of the farright House Freedom caucus to get the gavel in the first place. I dont think its a surprise to anyone that mccarthy and i have our own issues. Its an issue of governance. We know that mccarthy has not been able to contain his conference. We know he hasnt been able to keep the promises that he has made to leader jeffries, to the president , to Majority Leader schumer when it comes to the spending. Schumer when it comes to the spending we know this is a man who is interested only in his speakership and that really governing on behalf of the country, only when its we came to politically poisoned did he decide to do a clean cr to shut down on the 11th hour with only giving us maybe five minutes notice. November 17th is the next deadline. How can americans be assured that we are not going to be going through this again as we are coming up to the thanksgiving holiday and that, for instance, democrats get the funding that they need . The American People deserve us to come to the table to govern in a bipartisan way because we have a bipartisan government. Your colleague jamie raskin essentially said this was all a result of members of the Republican Party being in the clutches of donald trump. I want to play a part of what jamie raskin told me as his funding was passing the house. Im going to have you react. We are going to try to release ourselves from in the clutches of donald trump. He started his week sending putins little helpers in the house to try to shut down the government and impeach joe biden. They now want to overthrow Kevin Mccarthy for not being sufficiently obsequious to all of their demands. What do you make of that . I, mean raskin a spot on. The former president was very clear when he asked his maga republican extremists to save him. He asked him to start an impeachment. He is a twice impeached former president who has 91 indictments. Hes facing both state and federal charges. He will do everything he can to distract from the fact that he has to go to court basically every single day. We have seen how that impeachment inquiry just fell apart with their first witness within 40 seconds of the opening statement. Its been a disaster for republicans. It was a disaster for him to make his Frontline Members who are in biden districts to take the votes where they or slashing every Essential Service that so Many Americans rely on, especially our vulnerable ones. He voted to slash 80 of the funding that helps with Home Heating Services that people like minnesotans rely on come winter, which is not that far away. These are the kind of votes that he is forcing them to take in order to appease the former president and his minions in the house. Its unfortunate. If there was a shutdown, they would not even get back pay like the rest of the federal employees. This is not a game anyone wants to play. These are not people who are interested in doing that work. They put ideology over their people all day. They put politics over people. What was the thing that was holding it up . In previous shutdowns, there was actual understanding of where the hangups were in negotiations. These were them negotiating amongst themselves. I think what Michael Cohen is missing, in terms of incentive for President Trump, are the two things that we very much learn over the course of all of these indictments and pending trials, which is that donald trump has benefited greatly within the republican primary, every time he is in court, every time there is any whiff of possible wrongdoing on his part. An indictment against him, and not just is he benefiting, within the polling, but it is huge for him in terms of raising, money which he needs to continue to do to be able to fund his lawyers.
