Speaker Kevin Mccarthy is in a political fight for his life as a member of his own party, representative matt gaetz, is pushing to oust him and has enough republicans lined up against the speaker to bring him down unless democrats come to the rescue. I have enough republicans where at this point next week, one of two things will happen. Kevin mccarthy wont be the speaker of the house or he will be the speaker of the house working at the pleasure of the democrats. Its chaos up there today with different factions, both parties conferencing and coming out with different points of view. What do we know about whether mccarthy can survive this vote which could come up as soon as an hour from now . Reporter Kevin Mccarthy has proven himself a very adept political survivor over the last nine months or so. He may be out of moves. This may be checkmate for his speakership. He has indicated he will go forward with this motion to vacate. He has the option to schedule it at any time. He will go forward with this this afternoon. Matt gaetz said and we have been doing our own Vote Counting here, that he has enough votes that mccarthy would require democrats to support him to remain as speaker. Democrats have made it increasingly clear, after a twohour closeddoor meeting in which dozens of House Democrats voiced their opposition to Kevin Mccarthy, that they are not going to save his speakership. One way or another, either by abstention, which would help mccarthy, i sort of thing my gut tells me he will survive. I have heard the report from garrett. Its an important one. Its insightful. My instincts say one way or another, i think he will make it through. Then we just gotta see how they proceed. I will tell you, even though there is no hint that the republicans and mccarthy and jeffries are talking or whatever, i guarantee aides are talking about what might come, what might not come. I sort of think he will make it again. Whose interest is it to shut the government down . Who does it benefit . You will not have a vote on ukraine. You will not have a vote on border security. Whose interest is it for the government to just shut down . It makes everybody look kind of crazy and out of touch. Thats what i think. Congressman quigley, would you vote for Speaker Mccarthy to keep him in office . I think that first vote saturday reinforces why i wouldnt want to help Speaker Mccarthy. He put out a bill and passed it to save gas stoves, but he wouldnt put money out to save ukrainian lives. You know i was in the room on january 6th when the far right crazies attacked our democracy and our capitol. The next day Speaker Mccarthy said that he blamed trump for that. Then later, he attacked the January 6th Panel and tried to delegitimize it. Its hard to support a guy who you cant trust, who works against the interests you care about most. What is the alternative . If theres no speaker in place, theres paralysis. Nothing can get passed, including a separate deal on ukraine. Look, it wasnt going to happen under Speaker Mccarthy anyway. Again, this is their civil war. At this point, if the best we can say about mccarthy is he might be better than somebody else that we put in place, thats a tough vote to take. Tell us what happened in the caucus meeting today. Look, today first half of the meeting was regular business. Second half is how this is going to proceed. None of us have been through this process. Listen to what the members of the caucus had to say about this and what they thought we should do. Whats your take on where the caucus is headed . I dont speak i dont think Speaker Mccarthy will get any help from this caucus. Let me reinforce, its another reason i voted no on saturday, because i thought it was our last best chance to do it. We had the votes to do it then. This is an unforced error. Unfortunately, all this chaos and that vote was a victory for putin. Let me ask you this also. I know how important ukraine is to you and how you voted on that before. If theres nothing thats going to get passed, isnt that worse for ukraine than at least the agreement that has mccarthy now mccarthy, mcconnell, schumer and the president on it from saturday night, which would be that there will be a separate bill on ukraine, which may or may not have border most likely would have border money in it, too. No guarantees were made. The fact is, last thursday the house voted roughly twothirds of the vote for a separate bill funding ukraine. Further evidence that we had the votes to accomplish that. Look, i get the chaos thats there. We didnt bring it about. You cant help a speaker who we know will be more chaos and renege on everything he made promises to. This was avoidable in june. There was a deal to avoid the Debt Ceiling Issue and to fund the government. A week later, the speaker reneged on that and lied about the fact that he had made any promises. One more thing also, i keep saying one more thing, but i have so many questions because you were in the room where it happened. How big a deal was the Impeachment Hearing that mccarthy let happen last thursday in House Oversight . The list is long and legitimate reasons people are mad. A baseless Impeachment Inquiry. Theres a long list of grievances. I think pretty much the caucus consensus is, we could do worse, but how can you support somebody who has been this bad for the issues that we care about . There would be a speaker pro tem who would have limited authority. A little bit of chaos, but it wouldnt go back to the chaos we saw in early january. Levels of chaos. He doesnt want to pay his service members, which he proclaims he wants to support, because he represents a district with many servicemen and women in it.
