And it really, again, undermined the conference and the institution. Unfortunately, these eight individuals torpedoed the conference, took out our best player on the field, if you will, and created a constitutional crisis. Thats republican Congressman Mike Whauler of new york state criticizing the members of his own party who voted to remove Kevin Mccarthy as speaker. Well bring you the very latest from capitol hill on the candidates who could replace him. Meanwhile, President Joe Biden is trying to reassure allies that the chaos in the house wont affect our nations support for ukraine. Well tell you what the white house is planning. And also ahead yet another tantrum from donald trump outside the courtroom in his Civil Fraud Trial. This one prompts a response from new York Attorney general letitia james. Good morning, and welcome to Way Too Early on this thursday, october 5th. Im jonathan lemire, thanks for starting your day with us. And well begin this morning with the race to become the next speaker of the house of representatives. Two republicans have announced theyre running to replace Kevin Mccarthy. They are majority leader Steve Scalise and chairman of the Judiciary Committee jim jordan. Lawmakers are saying that scalise has already been making calls to shore up support and met with the texas republican delegation, which is the largest in the party. Scalise has been the number two gop leader Under Mccarthy since 2019. Scalise who has eyed the job for years and doesnt have the best relationship with mccarthy, announced last august he has been diagnosed with a rare form of blood cancer. His name was repeatedly brought up when a farright republican put forward the motion to vacate mccarthy. Jim jordan, on the other hand, was the first person to announce his own bid for speaker. The Founding Chair of the house gop caucus is now serving ozone of the leaders into the Impeachment Inquiry into President Biden. And unlike scalise hes a current ally of now former speaker mccarthy. In their letters to lawmakers pitching their candidacies both jordan and scalise pledged to unite the republican conference. Meanwhile, congressman kevin hern of oklahoma is also intending to run for speaker. Hern is the chair of the Republican Study Committee and also met with the texas delegation. House republicans will hold a Candidate Forum on this matter next tuesday and hold internal elections the following day to determine their new nominee for speaker. At least thats the plan. In oero Win A Speakership a candidate must secure 217 votes. Which is a simple majority. Currently there are 433 members of congress. There are two open seats. However, if a lawmaker votes present, it does not count against the total number used to calculate a majority. Last january Kevin Mccarthy was elected after 15 rounds of voting. He secured the speakership with just 216 votes after six people voted present. Joining us now one of the reporters at the very front lines of this story, cofounder of punch bowl news, jake sherman. Also an msnbc political contributor. So, jake, lets start with the race here. Scalise and others and others may join them. Give us the latest what youre hearing on respective pitches, who seem to be in the lead, if you will. But also do we think that time line is going to hold inare any of these candidates going to get the number of votes needed by next wednesday . No, and i dont think, john, i dont think scalise or jordan is going to be speaker, to be honest with you. I dont think either of them could get to 18. Nothing personal, but i think they are if you look at the power of the House Republican conference to separate the signal from the noise here, the right is the loudest and the most forceful in the republican conference, but the a lot of power lays in the middle. Like you showed mike whaler of new york in the top of the show. He and his new york colleagues and Brian Fitzpatrick from pennsylvania, these are the people who by and large have a huge theyre going to have a big say when it comes to the next speaker and i cant see any of them i dont know about any of them. I have a tough time imagining all of them would support jim jordan or scalise. Well have to see who the other candidates who are that get into this race or are dragged into this race. Remember paul ryan didnt get in on his own. He got in after he was dragged in by most of the conference. I think you might see that again in the coming weeks. So certainly some news there that scalise and jordan, at least jake doesnt think hell be the favorites. Jake, give us the feeling among republicans. The house writ large particularly those in the gop now a couple days after mccarthy was ousted, like whats the mood there . And whats the sense as to how could they govern Going Forward . They cant, to be frank with you. Its very its very confused. Its very frustrated. Its very listless, and i think, listen, most of congress is gone today. Many senators are in San Francisco for Diane Feinsteins Memorial Service. The house has gone home for a rece until tuesday after the monday holiday, so i would just say that all of these lawmakers, these House Republican lawmakers understand they cant whip again. They cant go to the floor with anybody who doesnt have 218 who can win the Speaker Ballot on the first vote. Anything else will make them look like clowns, and i think they realize that, and i think thats whats going to drive a lot of the Decision Making, whenever the Decision Making comes to an end and its time to vote. And jake, give us the latest from the democrats perspective. Theres been a lot of chatter over the last couple of days the democrats have bailed out mccarthy, and weve heard them enumerate the many reasons why, painting this is gop problem. How does Hakeem Jeffries in his caucus looking at the chaos across the aisle . I will say this, ive had a lot of conversations with House Democrats over the last few days in which they said to me i really hope we knew what we were doing here. I dont think anyone is regretting not backing mccarthy. But if you get Steve Scalise or jim jordan as speaker again i find that unlikely, but if you get either of those as speaker theyre not going to be nearly as hospitable to democrats as Kevin Mccarthy was. And Kevin Mccarthy wasnt really hospitable to democrats. Listen, john, the house runs on a lot of kinds of traditions, and one of those traditions is keeping the Majority Abreast of what youre up to. Mccarthy did that to a large degree. He was calling jeffries all the time, telling him what he was thinking and doing on the floor. And i think that kind of cooperation is going to take a break no matter who the speaker is. I think democrats is looking at the other side of the aisle and saying chaos is good for us. These guys cant get their lives together, cant get their plan together and i think democrats think that will help them take back the house. Oncatrast to make, and well get more into the idea of ukraine funding and how tricky that will be later in the show today. Jake sherman, hes an msnbc political contributor, we appreciate you joining us this morning. Turning to another major headline now, Donald Trumps Civil Fraud Trial will resume tonight in new york city. After some contentious moments between his lawyer and judge Arthur Engoron yesterday the former president took a lunch break and flew back home. Before he released more attacks on the judge and letitia james. He seemingly confessed to giving fraudulent Financial Statements to his banks. Lets take a look at that one. The financial documents that i gave to the bank are much less than my actual net worth, so therefore i gave them to the bank, they cant be fraud because i gave them lower numbers. Im stuck here because i have a corrupt attorney general that communicates with the doj in washington to keep my nice and busy. They made up a fake case. Theyre fraudulent people, and the judge already knows what hes going to do. Hes a democrat judge. It all in fairness, he has no choice. He has no choice. Hes run by the democrats. Trump churning dangerously there and violating the gag order and incriminating himself. After trump left the attorney general of the state of new york, letitia james, gave remarks of her own where she defended the case brought by her office. This case was brought simply because it was a case where individuals have engaged in a pattern and practice of fraud. And i will not sitideally by and allow anyone to subvert the law. And lastly i will not be bullied. And so mr. Trump is no longer the donald trump show is over. The donald trump show, though, is paying off for his campaign. It looks like former President Trump is making more money. The Trump Campaign claims it has raised more than 45 million in the Third Quarter with over 37 million in cash on hand. Now, lets be clear. That amount cant be independently verified until the campaigns public reports are filed later this month. And there are Bookkeeping Tricks you can do to inflate that number, so well come back to it when its out. But for now a large chunk of that fundraising total spanning july to september reportedly per the Campaign Came from a flood of donations after trumps mug shot from fulton county, georgia, was released back in august following his fourth criminal indictment. The Trump Campaign has tripled the 15 million trd quarter total announced by ron desantis campaign. Because of Campaign Finance laws only 5 million of that money is available for desantis to use in the primary. Trump took a shot at desantis in a Campaign Email describing the Cash Flow Problems as, quote, a grave indication rons candidacy may not live to see the Iowa Caucuses in january or even the end of this month. At least in this email he didnt call him rob. Still ahead on Way Too Early thousands of Essential Workers will be on the picket lines today in what could be the Largest Health care strike in u. S. History. Well go through that labor dispute. Plus well talk about the latest action of President Biden in the white house to ease the burden of people who are struggling with student loan debt.
