Israel hamas war. Msnbc Special Coverage continues now with katy tur. Good to be with you, im katy tur. An extensive attack against military targets in gaza strip is underway. Thousands upon thousands of leaflets dropped by the Israeli Military warning everyone in the north to get out. The flyers telling the people there, according to a translation by reuters, gaza city has turned into a battlefield, for your safety and the safety of your families, evacuate your homes immediately and head to the south. But how do you get 1. 1 Million People to evacuate, and to do it quickly. And thousand do you do it amid the rubble of an already destroyed city . And how can you do it when the Group Governing them, hamas, is telling them to stay put, that israel is conducting psychological warfare in an attempt to displace them from their homes . Or when that same group uses civilians as Human Shields that is reportedly blocking the path out, according to Secretary Of State Antony Blinken. The u. N. Is now basically begging israel to reconsider, pleading for the government to transform what they say is already a tragedy into a calamitous situation. We keep reporting the situation in gaza is dire. You can see it from these images, and yet, by every hour, it gets even worse. One palestinian surgeon tells nbc news all hospitals are now trauma centers, and that she cant even comprehend the number of patients she has had, and many of them have no chance to have living. She expects, she herself will soon be a victim. No one can leave gaza. No one can enter gaza. Theres no crossing borders, nothing left for anyone to do. Its a huge, big cage that we are trapped inside. Whole neighborhoods have been wiped out from the map, and whole families have been wiped out from the history, and thats not fair. If hospitals are forced to move, the World Health Organization says it will be a quote, Death Sentence, for those on life support in those hospitals. For its part, the idf acknowledges the evacuation will take time, and says there is no firm deadline. Still, though, the amassing on the border continues. The strikes are just beginning, suggest thag Something Big is going to happen big soon and news from the idf that at least some soldier are already on the ground inside gaza. They say they are conducting raids and looking for hostages. Joining us now from Northern Israel is nbc news Foreign Correspondent josh lederman. Thanks for being with us. I know the situation down to the south where a lot of our reporters have been is getting quite hairy, what can you tell us about whats happening inside the country . Reporter we just learned about these raids. These are raids that the Israeli Military say they conducted on the ground in the gaza strip in the last 24 hours. The military says that they went in to try to root out the threat of terrorists as well as weapons in the gaza strip, but they also say that part of this was about those hostages there, katy. They say that the israeli troops were able to search for and obtain evidence that will be useful in trying to free those hostages in the future. Now, as far as we know, during the course of these raids, they did not free any hostages. If they did, they did not disclose that as of now. This is the first instance that we know about that the Israeli Military has gone in on the ground into the gaza strip since this began. Theres obviously been air strikes, but now we know they have been on the ground in the gaza strip as were anticipating this much broader Ground Incursion with the palestinians in the Northern Gaza Strip havent been given that 24hour notice to evacuate to the south. That deadline is set to expire about three hours from now, midnight local, about 5 00 p. M. In new york. Josh, the government of israel said it cant live alongside hamas any longer, its not possible. Theyre trying to root out everybody whos involved in hamas, everybody whos involved in planning these attacks, coordinating these attacks, perpetrating these attacks. They want them gone. They dont want them governing gaza any longer. Theyre asking gazans to move south, which we said is extremely difficult. The u. N. Is begging israel to reconsider. The World Health Organization is talking about how its a Death Sentence to those barely surviving already in hospitals. What is the Israeli Government saying publicly about this right now . Reporter to your point, theyre trying to eliminate the entirety of the threat from hamas, while minimizing civilian casualties, thats incredibly difficult to do because of how enmeshed hamas is in the civilian population there. In the notice to civilians in Northern Gaza to go south, there are tunnels that hamas is using underneath residences. There are buildings that civilians are inhabiting that hamas is using for its own activities. That makes it very difficult to distinguish, to do a Pinpoint Operation where you go in there and try to deal with this hamas threat, eliminate it off the face of the earth as Prime Minister netanyahu has said, without inflicting a significant number of civilian casualties, and so that is what the Israeli Government is bracing for. They say theyre doing everything they can thats possible. They say there still is time for civilians in the Northern Gaza Strip to get to somewhere safe in the south, but that time is running out, and aid organizations, the u. N. And others who are working in the gaza strip say its impossible to relocate 1. 1 Million People with infrastructure that has been nearly demolished in less than 24 hours without causing a mass disaster. We see people on foot. We see people where its possible in their cars. A lot of people are on the back of, i dont want to call them carriages but, you know, flat beds drawn by horses. What youre looking at is the rubble of whats happening in gaza, thats a torturous image of a teddy bear there, its gut wrenching. What youre looking at below is shot, the largest Medical Center in gaza. They say, again, yesterday they said they only had four more days of fuel for this hospital to power its generators, that would mean three more days as of today, if it still stands, meaning on sunday this whole system could fall apart, lots of people are flooding into hospitals, the compounds of hospitals hoping for some place to stay that will be safe. Hoping these areas do not get bombed. Josh, thank you very much. Lets go now to nbc news Foreign Correspondent matt bradley who is at the israellebanon border where things have been heating up again. Reporter im here in southern lebanon, just on the border with israel. Im just across the border with the northern most town of israel, matula, and this town, in just the past couple of hours, we heard from the Israeli Defense orders, they issued an order saying this town needed to be evacuated immediately, and we actually watched as Israeli Defense forces troops raced around the streets. They were basically scurrying around. It looked as though they were taking cover in certain places, clearly quite afraid that they might be taking sniper shots or some other shot from here across the border from lebanon where im standing now. Now, off my right shoulder, theres been quite a lot of action over the past couple of hours. We have seen artillery being fired from lebanon, and into israel, at least one of those was intercepted and fell down in what looked like a wooded area. Im not sure if you can see it, that sort of reddish, orange light over there, that was a fire that was started by what looked like that rocket that was felled by israeli antiaircraft or antimissile fire. So thats a situation that is still ongoing right now. But this is a situation that really pales in comparison to what we have been seeing in southern israel or just over in gaza. It is much much much less violent, but it contains the seeds of what could become a major conflagration. If hezbollah joins the fight, with iran, which also backs hamas, we could see this war being internationalized, another country entering, another major militant group whose power exceeds that of hamas, it would split the military fight into two fronts. The Israeli Military is sending new reservists all the way up here to the border, and it would drag in possibly more actors into a situation that had been until now mostly contained within israel and the palestinian territories, so this is a situation that could become so much worse than it already is. So much violence, so much more violent, and thats why folks here in lebanon, whenever they think of this, their minds go back to 2006, the war that raged across the border and killed around 1,500 lebanese people and devastated the infrastructure here in southern lebanon. All of this contains the ingredients for something so much more worse than what we have already been seeing. You have what matt is reporting there about It Heating Up in the border between lebanon and israel to the north. Again, at the top of the hour, reported that the idf is currently attack, they say, military targets of the Hamas Terrorist Organization throughout the gaza strip in an extensive attack. Thats what the idf says, they say more details will follow. We have gotten word from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahus office saying hes about to speak. Theyre calling it a special unexpected statement. Well tune into that when it begins. Joining me now is msnbc news Foreign Correspondent, Kelly Cobiella in jerusalem. Were getting the details of him preparing to speak. What are you hearing in jerusalem . Reporter this could be an announcement, an explanation about whats been happening on the ground in gaza. We understand from the idf there have been israeli Boots On The Ground in gaza but the idf has said that is for specific targeted operations to go after hamas militants. That this is not part of a larger ground invasion. So, you know, are we going to hear about some sort of planning, some sort of announcement about the Ground Operation that all of us expect but hasnt been announced yet by the government . We just dont know. That could be one avenue. There has also been an awful lot of diplomacy going on throughout the day today, to talk about humanitarian corridors and of course those civilians in gaza who have been told to evacuate to the south. Could it be something about humanitarian corridors . We dont really know that yet either. This is an unexpected statement, so were all kind of on tender hooks to hear what he has to say, katy. I know the country wants to hear about hostages. Unclear if it will be about that either. Kelly cobiella, thank you so much. Speaking of hostages, joining me from the white house is nbc news correspondent gabe gutierrez, on the topic of hostages, the president spoke with the families of americans whose loved ones are being held in gaza. What do we know about that . Reporter the call lasted more than an hour. The president speaking remotely with families of 14 americans that are unaccounted for, and conveyed directly to these families that they have been in the administrations prayers, and in a clip just released this morning from 60 minutes, the president spoke about why it was so important for him to speak with these families. Take a listen. Why do you feel so strongly about speaking to these families personally on zoom . Because i think they have to know that the president of the United States of america cares deeply about whats happening, deeply. We have to communicate to the world this is critical. This is not even human behavior. Its pure barbarism. And were going to do everything in our power to get them home if we can find them. And according to the white house, those families also told the president specific information about their loved ones and spoke about the need to hopefully get them out safely. Gabe gutierrez, thank you very much. We also have the Secretary Of State Antony Blinken who is in qatar today saying hes working with regional allies to negotiate a release of the hostages and what the u. S. Government is doing with those allies to get those hostages back but also to get the Palestinian Americans who are currently trapped in gaza somewhere between 500 to 600 of them, according to the state department. What is this country doing to make sure that they can get out . Dont go anywhere. T go anywhere. Despite treatment it disrupts my skin with itch. It disrupts my skin with rash. But now, i can disrupt eczema with rinvoq. Rinvoq is not a steroid, topical, or injection. Its one pill, once a day. As im speaking, it is bombing everywhere around the hospital, the building is shaking every minute or two minutes. I dont know if we are going to see another day. I hope my family is okay. The Hospital System in gaza is on the verge of collapse. That was a surgeon from al shee fa Medical Center, the biggest hospital in gaza, and once again, yesterday, the director said there was only enough fuel to power the generators to fuel the hospital for four more days. Sky news special correspondent diana magna has more. Reporter hamas will be crushed is what israels Prime Minister has said, and this is the sound of israeli vengeance. Who knows how many inside these body bags were hamas militants, and how many more were not, just Palestinian Civilians trying to live their lives, now trying to bury their dead, when the cemeteries are full to bursting. There is so much loss here already, and israel shows no sign of stopping. How can you console this kind of pain . A boy in gazas hospital shaking like a tiny sparrow, no child should have to be broken like this to suffer on both sides from a conflict they had no part in creating. But because the bombs keep falling, the patients keep flooding in. This is chaos, a confusion stretches of injured everywhere you look, and remember, when the generators stop, and israels total blockade of electricity, fuel and water, this will get even worse. Translator there were around 20 apartments, about 250 People Living in them, all of them women, children, and old people like me. Reporter israels air strikes are relentless, and people take shelter where they can. At the iron hotel in gaza city, the corridors are rammed. Just one nurse to keep the wounded here with the hotel medical kit. We need paramedics, this woman says, but how would they get here . When the bombs outside keep falling, 100 meters or so away. Her husbands clothes were torn from his body by the force of the blast. Hes confused and unsteady. He checks to see where he was hit. Tries to still the ringing in his ears. Translator a missile hit in the square. It was glass, metal, it was like doomsday. Reporter on alexa tv, run by hamas, and still operational, a call tr further resistance across the arab world. But hamass terrible actions have resulted in this. Joining me now is msnbc contributor, i want to get top line since we have never been able to discuss this, what your thoughts are, what youre looking for as this unfolds . Reporter i think my first thought is what is the end game for israel, the end game is the complete eradication of hamas. Israel and its military has mounted two incursions in the last two years, once in 2009, once in 2014, that this would be certainly not the first war between hamas and israel. The goal of the blockade initially in 2007 was to prevent hamas from arming itself. That has not worked. It hasnt worked because as we saw just a few days ago, the Deadliest Hamas attack against israeli civilians took place, hamas fighters are better trained than they were a few years ago. Theyve established networks of tunnels, secret hiding places and ways to acquire arms. So if that is the goal using the same method that has been used over the last decade and a half, logic would dictate is not going to work. In other words, a purely military solution to this issue is not going to be effective. So that being said, there has to be a political and diplomatic solution in the immediate sort of future here, looking at countries in the region that have influence, qatar, egypt, turkey as well, in the immediate next few weeks to prevent a complete calamitous catastrophe is something i would be looking for. Further, of course, down the line, some sort of negotiation that leads to a more permanent solution, rather than just kind of removing the military threat of violence, and then just
