Arab leaders over the siege denying gaza water, food and fuel. Now staying in the region another day as the one possible escape for gazans is not open, despite promises. President biden canceled his scheduled trip to colorado to stay in d. C. , stay at the white house and oversee the crisis. The white house is in touch with iran through back channels, we are told, to hold off any expansion of the war or else. Future u. S. Aid for israel is on hold until the House Republican majority can unite behind a new speaker, with the current frontrunner facing obstacles to securing the gavel. Good day. Im Andrea Mitchell in washington where the humanitarian crisis in gaza is worsening by the day. Israeli troops are massed at the border. They are not moving into position for an assault. Israel says the number of hostages has increased to 199. Secretary blinken in israel today is extending his diplomacy, pressing to open the crossing to let people out of Gaza To Egypt and let aid in. In the u. S. , the fbi Director Warning of increasing threats of hate crimes. In chicago, a 6yearold Palestinian American child, a boy, has been brutally murdered by his landlord who has been held on murder and hate crime charges are being investigated by the feds. The numbers get worse by the day. More than 1,400 israelis killed and 2,700 palestinians. Richard engel and his team on the ground getting a closer look at the devastation in gaza, including the heroism of some palestinians who are dismissing the danger to protect children who cannot flee the devastation. Reporter not everyone can leave, like the 22 children at an orphanage in gaza city. 12 of the children here are disabled. They are being cared for now by only two adults after the rest of the staff left for safer areas. This boy is 9 years old. He is blind and has profound disabilities. Maria is 7 and can only scoot. These children cant get out of the way of a coming ground war. Joining me now is Richard Engel, near the israel gaza border and nbcs matt bradley, up north in lebanon. Richard, Israeli Defense forces notified 199 families of hostages that their loved ones are being held in gaza and their futures could decide how large this Ground Offensive will be and when it starts. Reporter i can tell you that negotiations are still underway to try and get these hostages out. Im in touch directly with some people involved in these negotiations. They are incredibly sensitive discussions. Hamas, we know what they want. They want its prisoners out of israeli jails. Israel wants the prisoners the hostages released immediately, unconditionally. The hostages have also created a problem for the arab nations. According to negotiators and arab officials im speaking to, the arab world is embarrassed by this. It made it difficult to support the palestinian cause, because it is tarnishing the image of the palestinian cause. They cant defend people who go out claiming to be speaking for the islamic world who kidnap infants and disabled people and hold them hostage and make videos. These are sensitive talks. I think i know they are ongoing. That could be a reason why we havent seen a serious Frontal Assault by the israeli troops who are ringing the gaza strip. It seemed like they were going to go in a few days ago. Now we are in this period of diplomacy, trying to evacuate the americans from gaza and other foreign nationals, trying to evacuate the americans in israel who needed assistance getting out of the country and to try and get those 200 hostages who are somewhere in gaza right now held by hamas and potentially other militant groups. Once you go into gaza strip, right now particularly when people are on the move, it becomes incredibly complicated. These are some of the most delicate conversations that you could imagine. Richard, theres a lot of pressure from the u. S. We know Secretary Blinken is staying, extending his trip. He got a lot of pushback from the leader of egypt and from saudi arabia against the denial of aid, the siege. Water was allowed yesterday, we were told. The electricity the fuel, rather, for generators they cant pump water to people. Theres a lot of pressure from the arab leaders on the u. S. To president the israelis on getting aid in and getting people out. Egypt still hasnt delivered on the crossing. Its still closed. Egypt in particular is baring the brunt of a lot of frustration in the arab world. It looks like an easy solution. Open the door and allow the people to find a safe place, the same way poland and hungary and moldova did during the ukraine war. Open the door, give these people homes and let the militants fight it out with israel. It seems very complicated. Its not happening. Egypt wants to ensure that if it does open that gate, at least it what will effectively be a symbolic amount of aid, food and water across that border. But still, the diplomacy this is the middle east. Diplomacy can take a very long time. It hasnt happened yet. Richard engel, stay safe, you and your team. And matt bradley, in lebanon, hezbollah officials claim they are taking out Israeli Military depots to the north. There are concerns their involvement could increase in the coming days. There are back channel talks with iran from the United States, we believe through intermediaries. They are reaching out to iran to stay out of it, despite the meetings with the iranians in lebanon with hezbollah and with the iranians over the weekend with hamas. Reporter we are seeing diplomacy throughout the region. Its in parallel with Antony Blinken visiting several arab states as well as israel. The other with the Iranian Foreign minister visiting Client States or allies of iran and proxy groups like hezbollah, which is where thats the predominant force where i am here in southern lebanon. And hamas, Based In Gaza Near where Richard Engel is. We are seeing this parallel diplomacy. Both of them dancing around each other. At the same time, they are trying to create peace. They are also sort of instigating each other and launching at each other. I spoke with one member of hezbollah, a member of pa parliament. Here is what he told me. S what. Reporter he made a little interesting reference there, andrea, you could hear to the Axis Of Resistance. This is a selfstyled coalition of iranled governments and proxy groups like hezbollah, like hamas, who get direction from tehran. They also are somewhat independent. Its a very loose coalition. This reference that he made to the Axis Of Resistance, these are all groups that are opposed to israel and that are more opposed to Suni Gulf Powers like saudi arabia. That decision will be made in the coming days, and we believe after a sense of what israel is going to do in the gaza strip. Right now, hezbollah which is based in southern lebanon, just over the border with israel thats behind me, think are positioning themselves as a deterrent to whatever israel does in the gaza strip. They want to be placed here to move in and try to split the israeli army should they try to completely dismember hamas, which is exactly what they say theyre going to be doing in the coming days or weeks. We have a very delicate situation here. We have been seeing this crossborder firing over this border for the past week. It has been on a slow, rumbling sort of simmer. If anybody makes a mistake on that border and escalates the conflict further, it could boil over. Also, they are waiting on word from tehran and from their allies in the socalled Axis Of Resistance that this gentleman described. Its an incendiary situation and wouldnt take much to internationalize the conflict, drag in more foreign powers and even drag in the United States, with its naval assets parked right in the eastern mediterranean. And more coming. Matt bradley, thank you. Stay safe. Joining us now is former nato supreme allied commander, retired admiral james stavridis. Admiral, the military side, Israeli Forces are paused. Why the delay . We dont exactly know. Theres some factors that i think could be playing a part. The humanitarian aid issue that we are hearing from el sisi and the Weekend Meetings where it was really tough meetings with the Secretary Of State. The message to go back to israel where he is today, extending his trip. So theres a real pressure to do something more to help the people of gaza because of the protests that we are seeing and the devastation people are witnessing all around the world. I think there are perhaps four things at play here. None of them are mutually exclusive. First, its an incredibly complex Military Challenge to mobilize 350,000 troops, get them in position, give everyone their marching orders, if you will. Number two, the Special Forces, i assure you are doing reconnaissance, trying to find hostages. The israelis would like to give them some time to work. Then the two points that you just made. Israel has paused, i think, for the right reasons. Number one, allowing more of the gazan people to get out. Number two, to allow more time for diplomacy and potentially a hostage negotiation. Those are good reasons to pause. I suspect the idf is leaning forward ready to go but will continue to pause for the reasons i just indicated. At the same time, the worry about iran. We are told by Jake Sullivan you heard him yesterday there are back channel talks going on. How is that proceeding . How do we know whether iran is listening . I dont know how much they are listening to us. If they perceive a Potential Threat to them, they will take the diplomacy more seriously. They have always looked at hezbollah as a deterrent for attacks against them, reserved force against the israelis. They dont want to give that up. I dont think that they have a level of enthusiasm about getting into this. I do think that if you want to affect their calculus, there needs to be concerns about what we might do. They need to hear from the chinese who can tell them they really dont want to see this expand. They depend a lot on the chinese. The chinese, unlike the russians, do not want to see a regional war in the middle east given their dependency on oil coming out of there. We know Secretary Blinken talked to his counterpart in china, a close advisor, foreign minister, but he has a Larger National Security Portfolio for president xi. Also, what is israels likely reaction today . We saw meetings with bibi, an expanded meeting there, meetings with the president of israel. But then going on to meet in tel aviv after being in jerusalem with the former Prime Minister as well as the defense minister. Is israel likely to listen to the cautions coming from the arab world and the u. S. About getting the humanitarian aid in . I dont think they will dismiss it. The israelis are going to consider a number of factors before they go in. One of the main factors they are going to consider is broader not so much broader public opinion, but how well are they positioned militarily to achieve their aims. I think one of the reasons they are not rushing in probably has less to do with broader diplomacy and more to do with their own sense of how much time do they need to try to weaken hamas to the point where the nature of resistance though difficult will be less than right now. If in the process they can be signaling the arabs that they have taken some of the concerns into account, so much the better. I think theres Something Else going on. They know how important our support is. We are critical to this. We are critical to deterring hezbollah and iran. I think they will take what we have to say into account. Admiral, you know the Israeli Military so well. We had an extraordinary thing happen this year last couple of months of the year. There were daily protests and reservists, almost half the reservists signing up saying that they didnt want to train, they didnt want to do reserve duty and not going because of the domestic political concerns that they were disagreeing with the netanyahu government, with the overhaul the takeover of the judiciary, the independent judiciary. They then went. Clearly, people did show up when called after the massacre by the terrorists. Is there a lack of training or a lack of morale among the forces on those lines front lines . I spent four years in charge of u. S. Israeli Militarytomilitary activity. Went to israel constantly. Good friends with the former general who joined the unity government, which i think is a very positive thing in this regard. I mention it because getting general gantz into that war cabinet as they are calling it will ensure the spirit, the morale, the idf will continue to lean forward. Secondly, your point, this is a highly motivated force that has watched 1,000 israeli civilians butchered by these terrorists. This is a force that is going to go in with great morale and reserves have answered the call as israels Reserve Force traditionally has done. I look for the israelis to succeed here. The ambassador is correct. Its going to be a very difficult, long fight. Ultimately, i think israel will prevail because of that Reserve Structure and how they have answered these crimes against their people. Thank you so much. Appreciate you. Coming up, we speak to a father whose daughter was killed during the hamas attack but think there may be a way to somehow work toward peace. Thats next when the Special Edition of Andrea Mitchell reports is back in 60 seconds only on msnbc. An israeli businessman says his 24yearold daughter, california native, Danielle Waltman and her boyfriend were massacred trying to escape the gunmen at the music festival. As a formecoat soldier and tech titan, he was able to track his daughter and her boyfriend to their car, despite the murder of his daughter, his companies employ palestinians, said he still hopes for peace but not in the near future. He joins me now. Theres no way to express the depth of our condolences to you for your grief, the loss of a daughter. Hi, andrea. Thank you very much. Theres actually no words that can do much, but thank you for your kind words. Im sure of that. I would like to begin by asking you to tell me about danielle and her boyfriend. Tell us what kind of person she was, what kind of woman, what kind of people were they . Danielle was 24 years old. He was 26. She was born in california and spent the first four years of her life in california and around the United States. We traveled a lot. Then we came back to israel. They both grew up here. Danielle was love of everything woman. She loved dogs. She loved animals. She loved people. Everybody she touched really fell in love. She had an amazing smile. Everybody here talked about this. She loved to dance. She danced a lot. Theres an amazing dance that they have danced in a ski resort this year. My two other children and them. I will always remember them dancing. They have had a full life of traveling and fun and adventures around the world. They have lived a full life but very short. They were murdered by those creatures that came from gaza and killed so many innocent people that went down to the festival of love, Peace And Freedom In The South part of israel. Its just unimaginable looking at the pictures you have so kindly shared with us of these vibrant, beautiful young people, to think of their lives being cut out this way. So brutally, so horribly. At a love and peace festival. How did you track their car . We had an Emergency Call from her iphone that reported on a crash. Theres an sos call from the apple phone, which sends you theres an sos phone call. Then sends youion. I was able to go with a general. We took three officers with us withwo jeeps. Went down. Located the car. There were still the area was not clear. I couldnt stay away from her. I said, got to find my young daughter. We tracked the gps. We found the car. The car was full of bullets. From the back, there were at least three terrorists that shot them from the back. There were holes in the back seat that went into the front and windshield. There was a motorcycle that shot from the front. You now that everybody was in this car, probably was wounded severely or dead. We tracked it was with three terrorist bodies. One tried to escape and two inside the car. Then we searched more points where her brother and sister located their iphone and watch. We kept searching for them. Three of those out of the five places they were engagements of soldiers with terrorists but none of our teams were hurt. Eventually, we got devastating notification that both of their bodies were identified. Instead of going to a wedding, we went to a funeral ceremony. I want to ask you i know you had palestinians working in the west bank and gaza for your companies. You are in the i. T. World. Successful businessman. Working for peace. How do you continue to work with the people there and not blame them for what happened by hamas, by these Hamas Terrorists . I still believe in peace. I still believe we should stop killing each other. I think in the shortterm, at least in gaza, we need to show control, to not stop until we find all of the hostages. The most important thing now is to get the hostages out of gaza, back to their families. This is something i know the idf is working strongly on. After they understand that its better for everybody, the palestinians and the israelis, to stop killing each other, to live together, i hope we will be able to defeat. We have employed and i initiated this through a meeting with john kerry to hire and employ palestinians. It was very important for me to employ employees in gaza. I put a lot of effort to employ. At the beginning, hamas didnt like this and told them not to work for us. We were worried about them. Then hamas said, keep it quiet. Until october 7, we had about 25 employees in gaza. For now, i think, we need to deal differently with the palestinians in gaza. We need to act very cautiously with the palestinians in the west bank and understand that Something Like this should never happen again. Once they understand that brute force, murdering, raping, burning, beheading, cutting sex parts, doing awful things to babies, children, girls, women, elderly people i have seen out there and the evidence, once they understand we should stop killing each other, our hand is always reaching out for peace, always reaching out for peace, but we need first to finish the job in gaza, bring all the hostages, make sure theres no threats from gaza and understand that the whole neighborhood understands that no one should again hurt Israeli Citizens or penetrate israel again. This is a mission the idf and other Special Forces are working for 24 7. And were doing this. You talked about humanitarian things. I had a pilot from one of the squadrons yesterday. Im telling them to leave and go to where theres water and aid. We know that hamas has bombed the humanitarian corridor blaming the Israeli Forces of doing that. That is not right. Israel is trying not to harm and not to hurt any citizens unless is involved with hamas or holding our hostages. We dont want to hurt anyone thats not involved. We will hurt anyone with hamas or anyone helping or associated with hamas. This is the mission that the idf, the air force has taken. We continue working for the next days and weeks to complete this mission and bring the hostages back home. I think the best thing im asking the international community. I think the best thing for hamas is to work with international entities, bring back the hostages and then things will be less painful for both sides. Thank you. Thank you for shedding light on your reaction and the lives of these beautiful people. Thank you. Thank you very much. We would like to thank President Biden and the United States for all of the help and being an ally as the two democracies in this area Fighting For Freedom and for democracy, i think its very important. We will always be staying loyal for the United States and work with you in this area and everywhere in the world. Thank you very much. Thank you, sir. Right now, we have news from d. C. District court. A hearing today in the federal case against former President Trump for alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 election. The judge in the case was weighing whether to impose a gag order on mr. Trump. Ken dilanian is there at the courthouse. What do we know so far . Reporter andrea, minutes ago, judge chutkan announced that she will impose a partial gag order on former president donald trump. Specifically, she will prohibit all parties in the case, including mr. Trump, from making or reposting any statements publically targeting the special counsel, his staff, the judges staff or Court Personnel and also will prohibit statements about potential witnesses and the subject of their testimony. For example, mr. Trump will be able to criticize former Vice President mike pence who is running for president against in the republican primary, but he wont be able to talk about mr. Pences potential testimony in this election case in which mr. Pence is a key witness. This came after a twohour hearing that really put on stark display the clash between the First Amendment and Donald Trumps ability to speak as he is running for president and a judges interest in keeping an ordinarily courtroom, preventing witnesses and participants from being intimidated and preventing a jury pool from being tainted. What this judge concluded is that the inflammatory statements mr. Trump has been making, attacking the judge and witnesses are out of bounds and have the potential to intimidate and even spark violence, threats from the public at large, and that he shouldnt be allowed to make them. What Donald Trumps lawyers say that they will immediately appeal this order. Theres every reason to believe that the Supreme Court will ultimately weigh in on this. We are in uncharted territory with a president ial candidate gagged by a judge. What happens pending an appeal . Will they get a stay . Try to get a stay . Reporter no until they get that, a judges order is a judges order. She ordered mr. Trump not do these things. He has been posting on truth social throughout the hearing. It will be interesting to see right away what he does. The other thing that they grappled with at this hearing is, what are the sanctions . How does the judge enforce this . The judge said herself that an order without an Enforcement Mechanism is not really workable. She said some of the sanctions could be fines, for example, or ordering donald trump to show up here to face the music. The ultimately sanction would be jail. At one point, Donald Trumps attorney said, is your honor going to jail my client as he is running for president . Thats a tough thing for any judge to have to contemplate. It would be her right to change the conditions of his release. He does not have the same rights as any regular citizen. He is the subject of four criminal charges in this courtroom and many other criminal charges in other courtrooms. The judge has the right and the authority and the power to restrict what he says about certain matters. Ken dilanian, thank you very much. Major news coming from the u. S. Lets go back to the israelgaza border and raf sanchez. Not far from the border. You have been speaking with leaders in the International Committee of the red cross. Talk to me about what they are saying about the humanitarian crisis in gaza. Reporter yeah, andrea, thats right. The red cross is telling nbc news they are engaging in direct facetoface discussions with Senior Leaders in hamas about the fate of the israeli hostages being held in gaza. They say as a first step, they are trying to gain access to the hostages. They are trying to see what condition physically they are in, whether or not they need medical attention. They want to try to act as a go between to carry messages from the hostages to their families and vice versa. They say ultimately, they are hoping to secure the release of the hostages from gaza. I want you to listen to a little bit of a conversation i had earlier with an icrc official in jerusalem. Right now, in our role as a neutral organization, we are in dialogue and discussion with hamas at the highest level to ensure firstly we are demanding the Immediate Release of these hostages and also access so we can check on their wellbeing and so that we can pass messages from them to their family and vice versa. Reporter andrea, the red cross would not go into detail about what is being said in these discussions. They say they cant in order to maintain their position as a trusted, independent mediatmedi which is a role they have been playing since before the first world war. They say the talks with ongoing and they are committed to keeping the families of the hostages informed. We are also hearing for the first time from the Israeli Intelligence community about what was clearly a largescale intelligence failure. Israelis Domestic Intelligence agency, the top director today is saying his organization was unable to generate the necessary warnings to thwart the attack on saturday. He says that as the leader, he takes responsibility for that failure. But he says there will be time for investigations. Right now, that organization along with the entire Israeli Security state is fighting. You can bet that when this war is finally over, there will be a commission here in israel along the lines of the 9 11 commission in the United States, along the lines of the commission that investigated the Intelligence Failures ahead of the Yom Kippur War in 1973. That commission will be tasked with finding out what went wrong. You got a lot of news in that report. Thank you. Overwhelmed. Hospital workers on either sides, both sides of the border, are united by a common mission, putting patients first. Lester holt spoke to doctors in both israel and gaza divided by just seven miles on land. A surreal split screen. Doctors on both sides. Lives in their hands. The future not. The windows would not stand shaking. The beds empty now. All the children moved downstairs because the risk of being hit by another missile is simply too high. Theres no empty space where this doctor works. Every inch of the hospital now a trauma center. The wounded laid out on the floor. Children bearing the brunt of an escalating war. This enormous amount of injuries, i havent ever experienced Something Like that before. With at least 1 million palestinians displaced on the gaza strip, Doctors Without Borders says air strikes have driven away many of its 300 personnel into hiding and that hospitals cant function whout supplies. The organization is pleading with israel to, quote, show humanity. Joining me now the Executive Director of Doctors Without Borders. Thank you so much for being with us. Tell me about your personnel right now. What are they seeing . Whats the situation in gaza, in these hospitals . Andrea, many are running for their lives. Our ability to deliver life saving medical aid in an impartial, neutral fashion is being tested like i have rarely seen in all my years with the organization. The hospitals where we have had staff working and supporting for a number of years have lost a lot of the staff. Many of our own colleagues did decide to flee with their families to find safety. Now they are on the run. They are looking for shelter. They are doe hydrated. They are exhausted. This includes international staff. This includes palestinian colleagues, doctors, surgeons, nurses. Some of them did decide to stay behind at the bedside of patients and continue working as best they can. All through all of this, we are often losing contact with our own people on the ground. We have more than 300. Because of the shortage of electricity, people cant recharge their phones. They are moving from place to place. Were having a terrible time just even keeping track of everyone to check in to make sure they are okay. What are you hearing what are you asking from israel . You know that Secretary Blinken extended his stay and has been talking to them today about this very issue. First of all, we believe that there should be some adherence to International Humanitarian law. People should be allowed to flee, to find safety, with no prejudice on their Right Of Return eventually. We ask for there to be an ability for the humanitarian organizations to bring in supplies, medical supplies. Theres one hospital where we had harrowing stories. They have run out of painkillers. The patients are screaming in pain. Theres nothing to alleviate their suffering. To bring in the humanitarian supplies, obviously, water is a huge issue as well. Our colleagues are reporting that the water people are drinking is salty, its brackish, it needs to be treated. You need fuel to be able to run the Water Treatment plant. You need fuel to be able to run the generators to power the incubators where we have got neonatal cases, infants, newborns at risk of dying if not from a lack of electricity, then from a lack of water. We are just in a terrible situation where many people are going to die not from the direct consequences of the war and of the bombardment but from all the other issues that are surrounding them and making life untenable. From your knowledge, the crossing is not open, correct . Thats my understanding, yes. Thank you very much. Stay in touch. Best to you and all of the brave medical workers. Will do. Coming up, other news from washington where the race for house speaker, thats still up in the air. We will get the latest from capitol hill. You are watching Andrea Mitchell reports. This is msnbc. Lawmakers are returning to capitol hill here in washington, but no house speaker, no consensus on how to proceed over the weekend. Nearly two weeks after speaker Kevin Mccarthys ouster, the business of the u. S. Government ground to a halt. Jim jordan is the current gop nominee to fill the post after winning a majority of his conferences votes by Secret Ballot friday. He is facing an uphill battle to get to 217, the votes he will need to become the next speaker. Ryan nobles is reporting from capitol hill. Ryan, a lot of reports of pressure tactics, all threats of being primaried. I was also told theres a break glass proposal that some senators like Lindsey Graham are pushing to get democrats to help republicans in empower Patrick Mchenry to get the Aid Supplemental on the floor. What are you hearing . Is he going to get to 217 by tomorrow . Reporter theres so much in play. I do think that there will be serious conversations about empowering Patrick Mchenry, but probably not until after jim jordan at least gets an opportunity on the floor of the house to try and win the 217 votes to become the next speaker of the house. We expect that to happen tomorrow at noon. There are some signs that jordan is starting to build momentum and break into that group of 55 republicans who in a closed door meeting on friday said that they would not support him on the floor. Jordan sent a letter to his colleagues today. He is not sounding like the hard did the liner characterized as representing the far right of the Republican Party during his time in washington. The letter says, the principals that unite as republicans are greater than the disagreements that divide us. The difference between us and our democratic colleagues out weigh our divisions. The country and the conference cannot afford us attacking each other. Its time we unite to get back to work on behalf of the american people. Its rich coming from jim jordan. But there are signs that his outreach and the strongarm tactics he used with moderates is starting to work. A couple of these republicans who said they would never support jordan are now starting to crack. Including representative ann wagner who told our colleague Scott Wong Last week she was a hell no on jim jordan. Now shes saying that they spoke at length this morning. He allayed some of her concerns. Now shes saying he is our conference nominee and she will fort his nomination on the house floor. Another republican, more establishment who seemed reluctant to give jim jordan the gavel, mike rodgers, chair of the Armed Services committee, he is saying they had a thoughtful, productive conversation over the past two days. As a result, he decided to support jim jordan as speaker of the house. Whats important to point out is it only takes fiefr of these republicans to say no to jim jordan. We might not know the full answer to that until the voting starts tomorrow at noon. We know from the democrats from hakeem jeffries, at least with kristin welker, they are not going to help. This is a republican fight, understandably. Ryan nobles, thanks so much. Thank you. See what the next 24 hours brings. A tragedy for the family of a young boy in illinois. The boy killed by his landlord in what is being investigated as an antimuslim hate crime following the eruption of violence in the middle east. This morning from the fbi director theres no question we are seeing an increase in reported threats. We have to be on the lookout, especially for lone actors who may take inspiration from recent events to commit violence of their own. bridget with Thyroid Eye Disease i hid from the camera. Today is funeral is set for a 6yearold Palestinian American boy in a chicago sub burn who was fatally stabbed 26 times over the weekend in an alleged antimuslim hate crime by his landlord. The boys mother was also stabbed more than a dozen times and currently hospitalized in critical condition. The 71yearold suspect is expected to appear in court at any moment. The u. S. Attorneys office says it h opened a federal criminal hate crimes investigation. In a statement the Sheriffs Office says the victims were, quote, targeted byhe suspect due to them being muslim and the ongoing middle eastern conflict involving hamas and the israelis. Nbcs Shaq Brewster is outside the illinois courthouse where this hearing is just wrapping up. Also with me, New York Times columnist nicholas christophe. Shaq, the landlord is charged with first degree murder, attempted first degree murder, a hate crime. Reporter eight counts in total, andrea. I just left the courtroom where we saw 71yearold joseph czuba appear in a red to orange jumpsuit. We heard the judge list through the accusations in order against his release because of the gruesome nature of the attack and the fact that theres still one of his victims in the hospital as we speak. We did learn from that hearing a little bit more of why prosecutors and why investigators were so confident to say this was an act of hate. A lot of that they say is based on a conversation that they had with his wife. I want to go down to my notes to get this correct. She told detectives, according to what we learned in court, he had been listening to conservative talk radio on a regular basis. That he knew the family he was renting to was palestinian. They said we learned in a Press Conference yesterday that they came from the west bank years ago, and that czuba, the 71yearold landlord, essentially wanted this family out immediately and was concerned about the reporting and talk of a national day of jihad. That ultimately led to that gruesome attack on Saturday Night around 11 30 p. M. Police say when they arrived they saw the mother and the 6yearold boy in a bedroom with those multiple stab wounds. That 6yearold boy, andrea, was stabbed 26 times before he was announced dead, andrea. Shaq, its horrific. Nick kristof, what do you make of the sheriffs Quick Response to this kind of alleged murder, a 6yearold child . Stabbing a 6yearold boy 26 times is mindboggling. I think it underscores the degree to which we have a real problem in the country with antisemitism and with islamophobia. I think there are a lot of jews around the country who are deeply nervous and a lot of muslims around the country who are deeply nervous. At the end of the day, if your moral compass isnt attuned to the suffering of jews in israel and elsewhere and to muslims in gaza and elsewhere, then youve got a broken compass. All lives are equal, and everybody deserves protection. We have to think about the role of social media on the air, in print and the way it exacerbates with many people who are ignorant and in their own little niches and dont know the facts, or in response to horrible facts we spond this way. I know the president spoke at the Human Rights Campaign i talked to people who were there. They said it was an extraordinary speech, a wonderful event and he spoke about the hate and the potential hate crimes against people of both faiths as well as the lgbtq community. Andrea, i just the degree to which there are some folks out there both in our world in the media and on Social Platforms who monetize antisemitism or islamophobia or who try to build up their platforms by spreading hate, it just is its so infuriating and maybe especially when its in the media world because i think you and i both went into the media because we thought it could do something that was a public good. When these platforms are used to amplify hate in ways that can lead to these kind of hate crimes, it just breaks me apart. Is wray, the fbi director ld reporters yesterday just the past week weve seen an increase in threats to jewish and muslim americans. The day of rage never happened last week. It was just a lot of hype, thank god. It apparently triggered this man, allegedly, according to his wife. We talk about the divide now, and there is polarization to some degree between jews and muslims, but the commonality is that both feel deeply threatened, both have been threatened and have been attacked. And i fear that events in gaza will amplify the hate and the risk of hate crimes to both sides. All i can say is keep writing, please, nick, we need you more than ever. Thank you. Thank you, andrea. Up next, the Secretary Of State crisscrossing the region in crisis in an attempt to get americans home safely and try to find a way out of this crisis.
