Than he had yesterday. We have more on that coming up in this hour. We begin in the middle east with a truly historic measure, President Biden making a first wartime visited to israel as an american president. As roughly a handful of americans remain hostages of hamas. We should note with the president there earlier today, 31 americans were killed in those hamas attacks, and 13 are estimated unaccounted for. His trip diplomatically significant. Also obviously a security test. Biden did his meetings and is now en route back safely. The will also now we just learned this basically moments ago the president will do a formal address to the nation tomorrow at 8 00 p. M. Eastern. Thats an Oval Office Address on this war. Biden also meeting with First Responders and people whose Family Members were taken hostage by who hamas. We have while the human toll hitting home after a terrible explosion at a hospital that killed hundred of people. Thats according to reports from inside gaza. An explosion at the hospital where the injured and sick are vulnerable. An explosion at any hospital is a horrific development. Thats true regardless of where the hospital is located, in what territory or country, or what side hit the hospital. In general, laws prohibit targeting of humanitarian or civil sites, but i want to express to you, the current accounts of this incident do not even get to the issue of targeting but rather where the rockets came from. The United States is publicly saying the rocket was fired from inside gaza by hamas a hamas linked group is what they believe according to intelligence, that israel was not responsible basedn reporting, including evidence, Missile Activitying and open source video and images. Now, theyre still investigating what happened. We continue to work to corroborate, they say, whether it was from a Palestinian Islamic jihad rocket. The president chose in this high stakes visit to specifically address the Hospital Incident among those meetings in israel. I was deeply saddened and outraged by the explosion at the hospital in gaza yesterday, and based on what ive seen, it appears as though it was done by the other team, not you. Butheres a lot of people out there who are not sure, so weve got a lot got to overcome a lot of things. So, thats the president bh expressing his conrnnd also talking about the source ut they believe of that rocket. Israel statehat its analysis of the operational systems show the Enemy Rocket Barrage W carried out towardsisrael, which pass in the vicinity of the hospital when it was hit. Again, continuing to read from this source, according to intelligence information, the g. A. P. Organization is responsible for the failed shooting of the hospital, end quote. The United States says its evidence is independent, not an echo of its ally. We can also tell you the blast on the ground had people interpreting it as if it were one of many attacksro israel on gaza. Officials in gaza also accuse israel for launching the attack on the hospital. Quote, they are responsible for that crime and they cannot fabricate stories to deal with it. So there you have intelligence and claims that are at odds. The United States, though, standing by that account. A Hospital Attack among other things, when you look at all of the tensions in the region, sparked demonstrations. Indeed, authorities fired tear gas to try to tamp down some crowds near the u. S. Embassy in beirut. We want to show you reporting where sky news was on the ground there. The air is thick with tear smoke. Were probably not going to be able to stay here long. I reckon theres a few hundred, perhaps more people here. The atmosphere is charged. These scenes replicated across the region. You can see people here theyre breaking stones. Ill give you a little bit of a geography tour. Over there where the smokes coming up, thats the road [ speaking in a global language ] reporter thats the road leading to the u. S. Embassy, and meme here are effectively saying the United States is effectively complicit in what they say are war crimes being committed in gaza. That is one account. Nbcs Richard Engel also on the ground today, not in gaza, but over in the west bank, reporting on developments there, including demonstrations. Reporter but ill give you a sense of what is happening here. These young men are throwing stones using slingshots at israeli troops. If you look up behind me over here, you can see an israeli jeep. For now they are just holding that position. They have, however, been firing what looks like live ammunition. We saw a young man shot earlier in the leg. He was carried off, taken into an ambulance. In other places, the protests are much larger. We now have Richard Engel himself. We showed you that reporting. He is now back in jerusalem where hes reporting for us. Richard, what can you tell us from all your reporting from these various places today . Reporter there is a lot of anger out there, but there were not millions of people out on the streets. There was that protest that i attended in ramallah was quite small, a few thousand people nushlly tried to go. Security forces who work for Mahmoud Abbas prohibited the crowds from approaching the troops, so they were really just a small group, maybe fewer than 100 young people, teenagers who were there. No one was seriously injured. I believe it was actually rubber coated bullets after we found out more from medical officials. So there were demonstrations. The biggest one was the one you were talking about earlier out front of the embassy, but again, not millions of people. That is not to say there isnt outrage, but it does not seem this Hospital Incident is going to be the one that is going to tip this region into chaos. But what i think is lost in this is it is not just this one incident. The people that i speak to in gaza, in ramallah, here in jerusalem, on the palestinian side, theyre not just talking about this Hospital Incident. And they are listening to the evidence, and they are listening to what the pentagon is saying. They are outraged at the israeli air strikes that are happening constantly. They are outraged the gaza strip is cut off. Theyre outraged the Palestinian People dont have a state after decade of struggling. There are many issues that are bubbling to the surface that have been brought to the forefront because of this hamas attack. People are not defending, necessarily some are supporting it, but people are not necessarily defending the atrocities, not defending the hostage taking, but they do understand the frustration that is out there, and they feel that because of deals that were made in the arab world with israel, because of concessions that were given to israel, that this Israeli Government in particular forgot about the palestinian issue and has chosen to ignore it, and now theyre seeking to remind the world that palestinians exist. But to answer your broader question, we are still in a very, very dangerous situation. The situation in Northern Israel with hezbollah continues to escalate. The israeli troops are still talking about a ground offensive inside gaza. Iran is still fanning the flames. And it is very possible that we are on the edge of a regional war. But it does not seem like what happened at that hospital is what is going to push us Over The Edge based on what i was watching across the arab world tonight. Understood. And fresh your reporting, Richard Engel there, having moved back to jerusalem. Thank you. Stay safe to you and your team. We have more as mentioned on what was a truly historic, in the sense of firstever unprecedented wartime visit by an american president to israel. Bye was on the ground for roughly seven hours. He got off Air Force One. You can see him there. He was embracing Prime Minster netanyahu. He held a meeting with the Prime Minster and the unity governments war cabinet. I wanted to be here today for a simple reason. I wanted to people of israel, the people of the world to know the United States stands the world sees that support, and the moral clarity that you have demonstrated from the moment israel was attacked, youve rightly drawn a clear line between the forces of civilization and the forces of barbarism. President biden also discussed the american governments commitment to israel and against its commitment against any acts of terrorism. I want to know youre not alone. You are not alone. As i emphasized earlier, we will continue to have israels back as you work to defend your people. The president also used some of his limited and precious time on the ground to do something that fits in with one of the priorities for the United States and the biden administration, which is both dealing with and keeping a focus on the hostage crisis. Theres a war afoot, and there is also an open and ongoing severe hostage crisis. It was emotional. Survivors, families, missing relatives, as well as First Responders, the first people to deal with and fend off the hamas attack. We were there in the first moment seeing atrocities. Little babies that were torn around, taken away from their parents, murdered in front of their parents. Were so proud that you, the president of the United States, came here to israel to support this country. You uplifted the whole spirit in this country. That is just a short excerpt of some of what the president did, the governmental side, the humanitarian side, dealing with the hostage side. All of this a big part of what the president wanted to try to achieve in one day in wartime israel. He also spoke to the individuals alongside secretary blinken. Im convinced that the more people know your responses to whats happening, as opposed to just what War And Peace is about the more theyre going to be inclined to embrace israel. The president then concluded a key part of the visit by making a statement there. We mentioned to you tonight we just learned there will be an Oval Office Address to the nation as many gird for what could with a heighten threat issue in the ongoing crisis. The president took what many view as one of these president ial leadership moments, these test, to make sure he reiterated and clarified and 100 on the issue of condemning the terrorism. Theres no rationalizing, no excusing it, period. The Brutality We Saw would have cut deep anywhere in the world, but it cuts deeper here in israel. We will not stand by and do nothing again, not today, not tomorrow, not ever. Biden boarded Air Force One and began a long flight back home. Heard from reporting on the ground. Now we turn to aaron david miller, middle east peace negotiator, State Department veteran. Many different aspects to this, as i emphasize in our reporting. Big picture, what did you think of what the president of the United States conveyed in this unprecedented visit to a wartime israel . First of all, ari, thanks for having me. It really was an extraordinary, extraordinary moment. The president was in ukraine of course, but this was rather remarkable. I think he had three objectives. One, provide hope, reassurance and leadership to a nation that is grieving and has come to doubt, i suspect, its own political leaders. Number two, work with the Israeli Government to try to figure out a way to stabilize a bridge of humanitarian assistance into Southern Gaza where you have Hundreds Of Thousands of people underresourced and underserved. Thats a critically important point that he made, and hoping in the days ahead theyre the third issue, which i think is the toughest is have a very frank conversation with the Prime Minster and the Prime Minsters war cabinet about the nature of what the israelis are going to do on the ground, the objectives, the implications, the consequences. I think he referred not so obliquely in his remarks to 9 11 and warned of the dangers of acting on rage. And i think that conversation may have had some impact in perhaps shaping, to some degree, what we may see play out in coming days and weeks. Its a moment of leadership, and this man who has extraordinary commitment to the state of israel, deeply embedded in his political and emotional dna, showed that leadership and showed israel he talked about, the quote, black hole of loss. Thats joe biden personally reflecting on his own history of family tragedy. He related to the survivors, hoe people of israel. You point to the invocation as well as the warning about making policy coming out of these type of searing experiences, including 9 11. Heres what this is now what the president said about that. Shock, pain, rage. An allconsuming rage. I understand and Many Americans understand. But i caution this while you feel that rage dont be consumed by it. After 9 11, we were enraged in the United States. While we sought justice and got justice, we also made mistakes. Walk us through why you mention that, whats important about that, especially because for those who have studied the use of terrorism, which is a tactic thats risen, specifically aligned with certain Subset Movements that claim to be muslim or claim to have a militant ideology, although we have had many conversations about what they do and dont represent. But the tactic which has risen is precisely designed to engender not only a response, but potentially a grievous or disproportionate response. 9 11, where the standard of victory was never, when could we win, but, when do we leave . I believe he amplified that in private with the Prime Minster. What are they facing in 2. 3 million in gaza, population density, 2,300 people per square mile. A Tunnel System thats half the size of the new york subway system. A hamas that is clearly prepared with ieds, booby traps. Then im sure the president raises, what about the day after . Decapitating hamas, destroying its military infrastructure, then the question, is what comes next . I think that conversation is critically important. I think the president had it and frankly hes built up so much currency based on trust and confidence that i think he could deliver it. Whether or not the israelis are thinking this through, rethinking it, i think they know the risks and implications of a massive ground war, and we can expect something, i think, in the days and weeks ahead, but its not entirely clear now precisely how large what the depth and breadth of what the israeli response is going to be. Understood, and good context for everyone as we reflect on whats happening over there and the historic visit by President Biden. David miller, i want to thank you. Want to tell everyone whos coming up. Another day in the speaker clash. Jim jordan losing worst than yesterday. Our report on that in one minute. Next. In one minute next with some help from j. P. Morgan wealth plan. Lets go whiskers. Jen y is working with a banker to budget for her birthday. You only turn 30 once. And jen z . Her credits golden. Hello new apartment. Three jens getting ahead with chase. Solutions that grow with you. One bank for now. For later. For life. Chase. Make more of whats yours. Hey, grab more delectables. Chase. You know, that lickable cat treat . Delickable delectables . Yes, just hurry. Hmm. It must be delicious. Delectables lickable treat. We are back. Welcome to the beat with ari melber. We turn now to the speakers race. Ill show you whats happening there, why jim jordan is losing. He basically had a second vote today and fared worse than yesterday. Lost two republicans. Thats a total of 22 republicans opposing jim jordan as speaker. Now, to win of course on the floor you can only lose a handful. What republicans keep doing to themselves in public is a contrast to how most speaker votes proceeded across all of american history. Thats not, by the way, a partisan point. Both parties have never done it like this. They decide their leader in private in a meeting and just formalize it on the house floor. Thats not only more time efficient its also far less embarrassing to the people weve seen go up and down and the way the Republican Party is doing it. Theyve proved unable. Indeed, remember, it took 15 rounds for the now fired republican Speaker Mccarthy to get the gavel in the first place. A speaker has not been elected. This dramatic day that is now turning out remotely the way Kevin Mccarthy had hoped. A speaker has not been elected. Gaetz, one of the leaders of the rebellion. This looks like a bit of a heated conversation. This is incredible. This is an incredible moment. Mccarthy is now directly engaging matt gaetz. Somebodys holding somebody back. Look at that. Representative Kevin Mccarthy has now been elected speaker of the house. This comes after 15 rounds of voting. So, to put that in perspective if you remember that, today jim jordan lost by more votes than mccarthy at his lowest point during those clashes you just saw, when he was just a handful short, and jordan got fewer votes than mccarthy got on his way out when mccarthy was ousted two weeks ago. If you have been following other news or just turning kind of turning away from this seemingly ongoin
