MSNBC Alex Witt Reports September 9, 2024

She was airlifted to a hospital, no update on her Condition Or House she survived on her Own. And the man that wrote the book on the president ial debates joins me, and he can tell us a lot about what to expect on Tuesday Night, the next hour starts right now. The powerful opioid fentanyl, im sorry, we have a different story, let me welcome you to the show, thank you for being here. So, 58 days until the election, developing for you right now, we are about 54 hours or so away from the first president ial debate between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump. Today on msnbc, the Harriswalz Official says the Vice President is taking this extremely seriously. Donald trump has been in the most president ial debates than any other candidate in president ial history, so we know that Donald Trump has been preparing for weeks, so he has to come ready but so does the Vice President , she is ready to talk to Donald Trump about the issues facing voters across this country and the stakes of the election. And on the other side, republicans laying out their expectations for the former president. I think he needs to let Kamala Harris talk, something she has been reluctant to do unless she is reading a teleprompter. Im looking forward to a repetition of the good Debate Performance that President Trump had with President Biden and i think hes up to it. This is a glimpse of how tight this race is, and a new national poll by The New York Times, trump leads harris 48 with a mean margin of error and the Cbs News Poll shows they are Neck And Neck in michigan, pennsylvania and wisconsin. Earlier today, Senator John Fetterman rejected this race will be a tight one, even after the debate. It is going to be a straight up debate, shes going to do great of course, but Donald Trump will be good, too. We can all remember, he wrecked all of the republicans, he is a good debater but at the end of the day i dont believe this is going to be definitive because it is going to come dOwn to this choice and it is going to be close. We are learning Today Team Harris will take a tour of key Battleground States this week, the Vice President Will Kickoff a new way forward tour that will start thursday in North Carolina. We have reporters and analysts in place covering these developments, we are going to start with nbc in pittsburgh within the Vice President , welcome. It is going to be a busy week for the Harris Campaign, where does the Schedule Start . Reporter a busy week indeed, we are going to have the Vice President and governor tim Walz Launch a Battleground State blitz, the tour that will see its way through North Carolina on thursday before going to pennsylvania on friday. Meanwhile governor Tim Walz is going to hit michigan and wisconsin, and the first gentleman and the second gentleman, excuse me, minnesotas First Lady will go to a variety of key states including nevada, arizona, florida and georgia. As the campaign is keeping things alive after the debate, the Vice President has been in pittsburgh, preparing for this Debate Holding Sessions and pouring over Briefing Books and studying not just policies but also behavioral standpoints and how she can confront Donald Trump on the stage, with the possibility that he might get aggressive and really pouring over all different scenarios that she might face on Tuesday Night at that highstakes debate. I want you to take a Listen to conversations i had with voters throughout pittsburgh about what they are expecting to see from the Vice President on the Debate Stage this tuesday. I really want to see, which i know i will see, just for her to be her and to be honest and tell us what shes going to do for this country. I honestly have not heard any bad news about her, so i hope to learn a lot of good things about her and what her plans are to help us this next few years. As far as harris, and what she needs to do, i think it is just showing up and making it clear that she is capable. One thing about this campaign is they have consistently framed the Vice President as the underdog and the polls made clear why they will continue to improve in the Battleground States, and letting Post Labor Day and post the debate you can expect to see them on the ground and active in these battlegrounds as we are less than 60 days until the election. Okay, thank you so much, i appreciate that you lets go to Gillian Franco in New York. We have the Vice President who is characterizing herself as the underdog, does trump see himself as the favorite in this debate . We have heard trump express confidence in his debate skills, he has on the Debate Stage many times in the past and he said this is not something that you can cram for, that has impacted how hes getting ready. This time he is not taking a traditional approach, they are not hunkering dOwn in a Battleground State for a few days, Theres Nobody on his team playing harris. And they are taking a more Fluid Approach with Phone Calls and meetings to go over different policy approaches for Tuesday Night. But in Terms of the overall framing of the debate and the ability to declare victory after Tuesday Night, trump is already saying that the cards are unfairly stacked against him. I want you to hear how he described the debate during of the event in wisconsin yesterday. Take a Listen. You know, if i destroy her in the debate, they will say trump suffered a humiliating defeat tonight, No Matter What. And we do expect trump to potentially go after the Biden Harris Administration after the withdrawal from afghanistan and to possibly go after harris for her role in immigration at the southern border, as he continues to define harris before she is able to do that on her Own Terms. Thank you so much for that update. Joining me now, we have Molly Jongfast and tim miller, awfully good to have you both here on this sunday with me. Lets look ahead to tuesdays debate, it is the only Faceto Face Matchup for the candidates scheduled at this point, so what should we expect Tuesday Evening . What are you preparing for . I think it is going to be a lot of pressure, and debating Donald Trump is not like anything else in these sorts of debates and Vice President harris hasnt had a lot of reps with this and she debated Mike Pence four years ago, as she had some debates in 2019, the democratic debates which were servicing their Own right, but had up to 15 people on stage, this is going to be a very different animal, so i think for the Vice President , her main job is to, for a certain group of people that dont know her that well, to introduce herself and introduce what her agenda is going to be and also demonstrate that she can stand up to Donald Trump and i think that because of misogyny and attacks from the right, there are people wondering whether Kamala Harris can stand up to our foes and stand up to Xi Jinping and putin. Trump has become a standin for putin on the Debate Stage, so i dont expect her to go get dOwn and mud wrestle with him but they are going to have to have ties where she puts her prosecutor had on. For sure, molly was that your dog . And the reason i ask only because, was that kind of prophetic, with the same question for you because they are preparing Harris And Trump very differently for this debate, harris is reportedly hunkering dOwn to Challenge Trump on policy, trump is peppered with questions from his advisers. What do you expect and what guarantees victory for either candidate, and dont worry about the dog, we love animals, so it is all good. Yes, i have a kennel in my house, look, the problem is, i think the idea, trump is doing this thing called policy time, he says this is not a disciplined guy, you will remember in New York this week, he said childcare is childcare, so the idea that he is somehow going to be a disciplined debater is pretty wild, he benefited a lot from that last debate because he was upstaged by what was happening with biden. I think since then, they have made this case against harris that somehow she is not as mentally sharp as he is, but she has been a prosecutor and attorneys general, Vice President and senator, she has a lot more experience and is also a lot more with it than he is and she is many many years younger than he is. So i think this is a pretty weird attack that they are trying on her. I would also add, trump tends to just say what hes going to say. The thing that has benefited trump is that trump occupies this earth, too. So if he can convince enough people that some of the stuff he has been saying in rallies which is completely out there is somehow true, i think that is how he would theoretically win but you can already see there is some anxiety on his side as well as there should be. And like the first debate between trump and President Biden, the microphone is going to be turned off, and that gave the appearance of a more Restrained Trump when he was debating President Biden, what do you think the effect is going to be on this debate . I think it does help trump, i think it is pretty funny that he is playing this tough man that he is a strong Alpha Male and he has let his advisers needed him and put a muzzle on him because he cant be trusted with his Own microphone. I think that is pretty telling. But, i do think it will help him, theres a reason why his advisers use the Mute Button and i think Kamala Harris, the way it can become useful for her is going back to this prosecutor question, without Trump Interrupting her, there is a lot of material to work with and she can attack him without worrying that hes going to be shouting over her and make a case based on facts. And The New York Times reports both candidates view the debate the same way, it is a crucial opportunity to define Kamala Harris for millions of Swing Voters who feel they dont know much about her. How might that play into their approach . Well, i think trump is going to do what he always does, which is he goes into a rally speech, he says terrible things about immigrants, he will say maybe something appalling, and shes going to have to just because look, a lot of the stuff he has said has been not true so shes going to have to do the job of Fact Checking, unless the abc moderators are going to Fact Check which im not sure they are, shes going to have to perfect check while making her case while taking the High Road which is actually not so easy. I have said before, when you let trump go unfiltered, when you let him just keep going, a lot of times he says wise again and again. So, im not sure how you thread the needle when you are her, this is not a normal debate. Trump is not a normal candidate. And Listen, it is harder to disprove ally than to prove the truth, we all know that to be the case. But tim, you have many trump allies, they say this debate might be his best chance to regain his footing in the race, but they are afraid if he is going to blow it if he gets personal with harris. Trump will be on stage with a politician that is generating much bigger crowds, something i suspect he is not very happy about. What are the chances we see in a disciplined trump that does not attack harris . Well, hes going to attack her but will he be disciplined on the Trump Scale . He gets graded on this curve where he doesnt get judged, like how Mitt Romney would have been judged for attacking people. But, i think the democrats should not be overconfident about this or lowering expectations for trump. And i have said it all, but in the first debate with biden, he was restrained. There were several times, he was lying obviously but several times where i thought man, trump is going to be going for the jugular here, hes going to do a haymaker and he took a number of passes and stayed on message for trump, which is gibberish and lies but he stayed with the stuff that he does with the speeches. So i think we could very well see that again and democrats Shouldnt Count on trump just Self Ventilating on tuesday. Let me ask you, was it an example of discipline of trump doing that or that he did what All Of Us were doing which was watching what was happening and going, uh, what . Again, that is a little more eq than trump usually has. You know, theres some instinct that he had to do that, and it worked for him obviously, so thats all im saying. Whatever, hes not going to be doing Ronald Reagan or john f. Kennedy, but i do think he was able to, within the bounds of his Own limitations, be able to stay on message. Molly, Nbc News reports that harris is preparing for potential volatile moments on the Debate Stage and is a Work Shopping answers to any derogatory comments he might make, what do you think the best way is to counter crude behavior from trump . Well, what she has done so far which has been really smart, she has taken the Obama Route instead of the hillary clinton route, which is this is expected, this is what hes going to do, she keeps saying you know, when pressed about that question, that terrible racial slur, she said its the same old stuff. Just acknowledge it, and shut it dOwn. And i think that has worked pretty well for her. Because the reality is, we all know Trump And Trump has benefited a lot from outrage, where he has gotten the other person to be outraged and gotten a lot of free media that way, so i think it is very smart the way shes doing it, shut it dOwn and move on. So, im pretty sure that is what she will keep going. So you can see her literally answering by saying something like same old thing, move on. And that is going to be it. Okay. Lawmakers today taking to the Sunday Talk shows to weigh in on what they expect to see when Donald Trump and Kamala Harris faceoff Tuesday Night. Republican lawmakers underestimating the Vice President s abilities and her Campaigns Momentum and democrats saying harris will make a strong case she will deliver for middleclass americans. I think he needs to let Kamala Harris talk, something she has been reluctant to do unless she is reading a teleprompter and i think we have seen the polls very close but, mainly she is coming off of this sugar high, after what was committed against joe biden, and the course of the conventions. I think the contrast is pretty striking between the candidate on the democratic side who wants to make sure we grow the economy from the middle out and Donald Trump who still believes in this magical thinking of trickledOwn economics where if you give him and his Friends Billions of dollars, eventually that will find its way dOwn to everybody else, that is just not how it works. Back with me are tim Miller And Molly jongfast. Tim, some surprising endorsement for Kamala Harris this week, Liz Cheney and Dick Cheney, how do you think about that, is that going to persuade any conservative voters to support the Harriswalz Ticket . I dont know if any one single endorsement is a Silver Bullet or a magic touch, but i do think there is a category of voters that are mostly college educated, middle to higher income, traditional republicans that wall Street Journal haters, that dont like Donald Trump. And dont particularly like even his economic policies, but they need a nudge, so things like Liz Cheney and Dick Cheney coming out helps, i would like to see the campaign trail, seeing that stuff in ads, heading other validators come out, i know the campaign is talking to nevertrumpers and there are a proportion of suburbs that are going to be important places for the harris ticket. Yes, i can see Molly Nodding in agreement, can i ask you quickly, do you think it is a likely scenario that we see Liz Cheney on a Campaign Stage with Kamala Harris . Yeah, i think they should do it. My understanding is i think that liz, which is why you have seen her not go to the dnc convention, i think she wants to speak to conservative voters herself without seeming to be endorsed, its not like she is becoming a democrat, she is a conservative so i think she will probably do events on her Own, that is my guess, we will see. Yeah, i think that is right. She has been really available, she was on a Sunday Show today, i think, she has spoken at two different public events in the last two days, look, trump is continuingly threatening her among other people, so she really has an impetus for him not to win. But i also think, she is an important she is important because she creates a structure for republicans to say well, im not a democrat, i dont necessarily love them accredit values and what the democrats want to do but i do not want american democracy to end, i dont want to elect an autocrat that is already promising mass deportation, i think the more Permission Structure conse
