Welcome to prime time weekend i'm nicole wallace let's get to the top stories. We witnessed a political bombshell in the making, liz cheney, vice chairman of the committee and the most conservative republican dynasty in america who earlier this weekend dorsed endorsed harris, she and her father will do something if you are casually follower you might think hell is frozen over. Dick cheney is voting for democrat, he is voting for harris. Here she is in conversation with the atlantic's mark levovich making the news in austin, texas. Dick cheney, your father, a beloved figure among democrats for many, many years [ laughter ] do you, do you, if you know who he will be supporting or who he will be voting for do you care to share with us who he might be voting for dick cheney will be voting for kamala harris. [ cheers and applause ] okay. Wow. Words i never expected to hear yeah. You know. If you, if you think about the moment that we are in and you think about how serious this moment is. You know, my dad believes and he said publicly that there is never been an individual in our country who is as grave of a threat to our democracy as donald trump is. And that, that is the moment we are facing. I am going to show you all of the news that liz cheney made because there is a lot more. But i want to stop here. I worked for dick and liz cheney and what dick cheney just did and what liz announced made it impossible, played it impossible for the chris christies and the george w. Bushes and bill barrs to sustain their position, somehow, some universe, kamala harris is worse than donald trump or writing someone in or doing nothing. But liz cheney, they went further. She is endorsing the democratic nominee for the u. S. Senate in texas. Congressman alred over republican ted cruz. He will join our program in a little bit to react to this endorsement. That is where we start today with some of our favorite friends, tim miller, and democratic polester to tell us what do the democrats do with all of this. With me at the table. The president of the action network. The host of politic nation here on msnbc and the department of justice is back with us. Lucky for us, all of them msnbc contributors. To miller, your thoughts? well, some ways this is a shock. A earthquake, dick cheney, darth vadar, not much of a surprise. Because of what we have seen from liz cheney and and i want to go back to the when she was sacrificed at the alter of the insurrection by the republican party and then in that ad, our nation's 246 year history never an individual that was a greater threat to the republic than donald trump. Nothing more important that liz will ever do than lead the effort to make sure donald trump is never again near the oval office and she will succeed. I mean, that is as straightforward as it gets. That is classic dick cheney. You know, love him or hate him, he always was clear eyed about what he thought was the right approach. In this case he, dick cheney is looking at it saying trump is, seeing him as the greatest threat in the history of the republic. I mean, that is not mincing words. So, i agree with everything. Huge news t means we should mention that now the last two republican vps will not be voting for trump. Mike pence is neutral, i guess. And dick cheney is, donald trump's own vp is not voting for him and the previous vp is voting against him, that is telling. And i think it is worth it to something that you said. Condoleezza rice was on fox news trying to do a twostep where she said there is this, there are four horse man coming, isolationism, protectionism, nativism and populism and we need to fight against them. On fox but does not say trump's name. Who are you talking about with those four threats? you know, if you think things are parril and that bad, why don't you say his name? well, i mean, not to talk out of school but the construct is george w. Bush. He writes about it in decision points and privately since before he left the precedency worried about those threats. But, the horses are not headless, you know, the head on all four horses, tim, is donald trump. Donald trump is galloping through not just the republican party but the world. Cozied up to victor. And putin. And i think the question, for all of them wherever they go is what is the difference between how you see the world and how dick and liz cheney see the world. There is no test, there is no difference between condoleezza rice's worldview as it pertains to putin and dick and liz cheney, the difference, the variable is somewhere else, right? yeah. Courage to speak honestly and to deal with the blow back. The cheneys have dealt with and the others have dealt with. Cheney lost her seat, lost her spot. You don't get invited on the show, i guess, if you say the words that is donald trump who is, who is the one that is the threat ahead of all of the horses. And i should say one other thing, i guess one rational that some of the folks might of given why they are different from dick and liz in the past is trump would have people more aligned with them around him. But the other big news story this week is we learned, again, confirmed again that actually trump has the most isolationist and most dangerous people around him now, this time. He chose j. D. Vance to be his v. P. At the advise of tucker carlson among a couple other isolationists. Platforming neonazi of historian who says church hill is the bad guy in world war ii. And, and we know, and we know that j. D. Vance, he does not care about the ukrainians, does not care about them. That is his inner circle. A bunch of people that are in ethama of the view in america's role in the world. In the view of internationalist and bipartisan consensus since world war ii. We know now there will not be other people around him that are more amendable to the condoleezza rice's of the world. Now we know the choice. Kamala harris is in line the consensus or trump who is a threat to it. And, and, a threat to our republic as dick cheney said. I don't want to beat a horse, so many horses, i did not mean to make another horse reference. What you said is so vital. Dick cheney's foreign policy views are what alienated him from all of the democratic party and swaths, that is what brought in trump that he sees his enemies and the world like putin, and kim jong un and hamas and the threat of terrorism and the threat economic threats from china and what not. More like harris does than anything that trump will do. It is a political earthquake that is, that is being felt and reported out. And i have never covered a republican making the move into the prodemocracy coalition without giving credit to the democratic party and the pro dem being on rages party for having all of us. What do what did they do with dick cheney? look, i am gob smacked. [ laughter ] i got to tell you, many, many years ago i never in a million years thought i would be sitting here one day talking about dick cheney and the cheney's endorsing a democratic nominee. That is how incredibly our world has changed over the last couple of years with the rise of donald trump. Look, i don't have to tell you this. I want to lean in with our viewers what a big deal this is. Probably about, there are few more iconic conservative names over the last two decades than the cheneys, right? you know, and, and, lord knows we can disagree and certainly disagree with dick cheney on a lot of policy and policy issues but, but, we don't think of him as someone who is not patriotic and loves his country and fights for democracy and what he believes about america, right? so, he was the vice president of republican vice president and their family it is now leaning into. That is an incredible moment in history. We have not seen the likes of this in our modern history i have grown cynical about how much endorsements matter or move people and i think in the last decade, just in my mind, i think there are a couple endorsements that move the ball that were impactful. One of them was another republican. It was, i think, it was, it was a secretary, the late great powell who endorsed barack obama yes. That was an impactful and meaningful endorsement. And primaries, ted kennedy endorsed barack obama it was a needlemoving moment for again, barack obama. I think this is a needlemoving moment, i think, for vice president harris because look, as you know, a lot of republicans have been sitting out there on the fence. We have been talking about permission structure. What bigger permission structure to lean in and vote for it than, than liz and dick cheney offering up permission structure. I think it is huge. Fiwere the campaign, i would be, i would literally running television ads with, with, with the cheneys and talking about bipartisan slp and something bigger than left versus right and america. All that i would add. I agree with everything you just said. I have a million thoughts about buses with shapiro and dick cheney. The operative in me wants to be in the room. What they are willing to help make their endorsement come to pass in 60 days, but, with the other piece, the frame on this, it is, it is, it is if she wants it or not, kamala harris now carries the banner, the only prodemocracy ticket before the voters. If she wants to grab it or run with it that is up to her. Strategic decision. No other frame under which to assemble her coalition. And the enthusiastic endorsements from liz and dick cheney. And i think that we have never, this has never happened before. We never seen this before. I think we have to stop comparing her candidacy to barack obama, barack obama was a phenomenal and it was historic and amazing, there is wider. We don't have the data to say it is deeper. But i think the comparisons are because of the crowds and the enthusiasm and the history she makes but this is wider it is potentially bigger and more grand. It is not at all partisan. It is about fundamentally do you believe in the democracy and hard stop. I think they are beginning to lean in. We are not going back. I think, leaning into it. I agree with you. This is, again, i work for barack obama. This is touchy territory and we handle it, it is special. I think, it may have the potential to be, be something greater because of its, because of the reach of what you just said as a coalition that has bernie sanders and dick cheney in it. That never happened before. And i mean, just, let me geek out about it. Do you cut an ad? if you are an eerie voter, and i spend a lot of time with them that vote barack obama, barack obama, trump, do you, do you, does it make the point that the harris/walz is not democrat or republican it is american ticket? if they are making the case? can you imagine? yes. An ad with bernie and dick cheney. Absolutely. Okay. Call somebody. This just happened so i do want to play some more of what liz cheney did. She made other news i mentioned it. Shean endorsement. I think that one ever the most important things we need to do as a country as we begin to rebuild our politics is we need to elect serious people. I want to say specifically, though, here in texas, you guys do have a tremendous, serious candidate running for united states senate and his name is. You are stepping on the news, guys, let her speak. Well. It is not ted cruz. But, colin allred is, he is somebody that i served with in the house and somebody who really when you think about the kind of leaders our country needs and going to this point about, you know, you might not agree on every policy position but we need people who are going to serve in good faith. We need people who are honorable public servants and, and in this race that is colin allred. I will be working on his behalf. You know, when dick cuts bernie ad that i imagined here on live tv. She will go in and cut outs for allred. She may be part of ushering in a pro democracy movement in november. So, my quip is, you will have a bernie and dick adventure. But, i am going to just stick with me on this, thinking about my career. So, when sammy, the underboss of the gambino family flipped and cooperated there were sort of shock waves through the family and every other new york family and what we saw was just a parade of cooperators because it suddenly was something that you can do. Even though these people had taken an oath. And there was, just mentioned, permission structure of, oh, i can do this. And i think with politics. Just speaking about it, just as a citizen. Politics, it is like religion or a tribe. Something that is so much a part of you in terms of i am a democrat, i am a republican. You don't think about the ability to step out of it to say i am going to vote in a different party. So, seeing somebody who is, you know, as republican as you possibly can get is dick cheney. And seeing that he is, in a way that is a lot more real than just saying, country over party. I mean, it is actually giving meaning to it and it is saying all of those foundational things that you think are just impossible that i can not switch from being a democrat to a republican or vice versa. It is really nonsense. That there are fundamental principals at stake. So, this is, i think, it is huge. I think it is needed because i think it is such a hard thing for so many people to think of themselves doing something so different than how they were raised. You and are making a point about permission structures and something that is impossible until it is possible. And then the possibility is contagious. Exactly. You don't think it is something that you can do. Sometimes it is not even in your imagination that it is, that you have not done it or seen it. That is why, you know, dick cheney and liz cheney are leaders. That is what you want from leaders, somebody that really steps up. And also doesn't do this sort of, sort of, well, i am not going to vote. The lamest thing ever. I want to get you in on this. Do i have a minute? okay. What i thought the day that i read about joe biden's decision to step out of the race and i think what i said in the moment we were on tv talking about it was, an active political sacrifice must be contagious, it must make other people do a hard thing and i don't think the military should be political and it is different and it must make republicans saying i devoted my life to it. This is different. Liz and dick cheney. And others that flocked the candidacy. I don't think it happens without joe biden and harris creating the circumstances. I totally agree. Joe biden set the temperature and showed the selfsacrifice. But, i think dick explainy, i probably led more marches against dick cheney around. And for dick chain tow do this, this is dick cheney. We marched on weapon of mass destruction. Was not all of that. I remember. For him to say that no, she is not unamerican. Imagine now, what donald trump and all have been trying to project her as. Unamerican, doesn't believe in the country, calling us socialists. Now you have dick cheney saying, i am going to vote for her. He just ripped the ground from trump's whole campaign. Now you are not arguing with any aoc or those of us, you are arguing with dick cheney on if she is a real american and with liz cheney endorsing allred, no longer i am preaching in houston on sunday, part of what we were dealing with is allred is not a black candidate, he does not even have to explain that any more. The whole thing is just flipped upside down. I agree with you. And i think that who would of thought that the cheney's would do it but they ripped all of these excuses off trying to paint her as just a black radical, that nobody, the most right winger will bleed dick cheney and do other than what they thought was best for the country. He is somebody that i always disagreed with but now i have to say he has done right by the country he has done right by t country make a statement of barely making a sound and command the road as well as what lies ahead? how we get there matters.
