MSNBC Alex Wagner Tonight September 14, 2024
It's a great book from a great reporter. I'm glad you had him on, chris. Agreed. Have a great weekend. You too. Okay, well, today started yet again with news of
bomb threats
in springfield, ohio. Yesterday two elementary schools,
city hall,
dmv and the
county court facilities
had to close because of bomb threats. Today two
elementary schools
were evacuated and a
middle school
had to close. Yesterday the mayor of springfield told
nbc news
he believes these
bomb threats
are directly connected to the baseless rumors spread online in the wake of viral
social media
posts claiming haitian migrants were abducting people's pets in springfield in order to eat them. I should note that the claims about haitian migrants eating pets in springfield are lies. There is no evidence to back up any of those claims. But that does not seem to matter. Here's the thing, a week ago today, on all of twitter, there were only about 1,000 posts mentioning haitians, migrants or immigrants eating animals. Twitter is a very big place. So this was truly a
fringe conspiracy theory.
During the presidential debate on
tuesday night,
trump used his microphone to bring that conspiracy theory to the
67 million
people watching live. And now, kids are being pulled from elementary school classrooms and canine units are sweeping the city's buildings for bombs and right wing influencers from all over the country have descended
on springfield to quote unquote report
on this completely fabricated lie. You might be wondering how did this particular conspiracy theory get to donald trump in the first place. As it turns out it's actually really hard to say. Because trump has surrounded himself with so many toxic fringy advisors that the pool of potential
conspiracy theorists
is just too large. Just as an example, look at a few of the
people trump
surrounded himself with on the night of the debate. This is video of
trump face
timing in to what his campaign called its social
media war room
just before the debate. Among the army of
maga internet trolls
assembled was a woman known as libs of tiktok.
Libs of tiktok
is famous for pushing
anti lgbt
content that has led to the arrests. And you may remember how her tiktok led to bomb threats. It is quite a resume. The woman behind libs of tiktok was of course one of the people that trump had in his
war debate room.
And she was also the one who pushed the
haitian dog eating.
And someone who was trump backstage and who came with him into the
spin room
after the debate. Let's talk about laura loomer. You may know loomer from her attempt to prove that the
school shooting
that killed 15 people and injured 17 more was a hoax. Or when she handcuffed herself to twitter's headquarters wearing a yellow star of david on her chest. That was before
elon musk
took over, of course. Loomer and trump have been seemingly joined at the hip all this week. I mean, even though loomer is a 9/11
conspiracy theorist trump
brought her to the 9/11 memorial this week. That's how buddy, buddy they've been. Loomer was one of those pushing the lie of the haitian
pet eating conspiracy.
Before spending this week with trump, a week ago today, laura loomer ate
dog food
on her show
loomer unleashed.
No pun intended. I think. Today for what is, whatever it's worth, trump tried to distance himself from laura loomer, sort of. Laura is a supporter, i don't
control laura.
Laura has to say what she wants. I know she's a big fan of the campaign but i really don't know. Is she an advisor. I would say that, well she brings a spirit to us that a lot of people have. We have very spirited people. Even if you ignore all the radicals and wierdos that trump has surrounded himself with and you look just at trump's presidential ticket, this conspiracy is still there.
On monday,
trump's running mate j. D. Vance himself was pushing this thing. From his
social media
to his social life to his professional
inner circle,
trump has surrounded himself with
conspiracy theorists
or at the very least people who are willing to push
conspiracy theories
in bad faith for personal or political gain. And because of the way the
republican party
is now structured. Once donald trump embraces something, well then everyone else does too. And trump is making sure his whole party feels welcome on this particular bandwagon. Even before trump said the lie about haitian immigrants on the
debate stage
he was posting memes about it online. As the
new york times
put it today, the memes over the top imagery gives him the feel of an inside joke. A just kidding is implied. Allowing political figures who have otherwise hesitated to circulate debunked particular to get in on it. And did they get in on it, they did. Even the official account of the republican
house judicial economy
got in on it. That's their tweet. The state's
republican party
brought the memes into the real world putting up 12 billboards around phoenix that read eat less kittens,
vote republican.
While trump and his supporters are all laughing on the meme based on this completely fake story. There are real
human beings
in springfield feeling the consequences. People who are now only sharing their stories anonymously because they are too scared for their lives to identify themselves. Their lives to identify themselves. [speaking global language ] ] but hey,
jd vance
says not to let the
cry babies
and the media desway you. So you know, keep the cat memes flowing. Joining me now is tim miller, writer at large at the
bull work
and political analyst. Tim, thank you for being here. To help us all figure out what exactly has happened. I just feel like the inherent nihilism of
maga world
and the trolls that surround it or are a part of its universe has led us to this moment, right. Where it's like all
fun and games
like a dark twisted sick game with decidedly real world consequences for a group of brown people who are here in the country. Let me just read you a quote from the
new york times
about how sort of this is a natural evolution of trumpism. Mr. Trump's mix of right wing politics, throwing and transgression during his 2016
campaign fit
neatly with the discontent and prankish instincts of the wilder fringes. This is inevitable, what do you think tim. Yeah it was inevitable. We all saw this in 2016. As someone who was an anti
trump republican
back then. I was awash people sending sexual explicit memes, racial memes. It was stuff that was out there unfortunately or whatever but that trump elevated and brought into the mainstream back then. And we're really seeing this now, you know kind of evolve and grow offline as well. And so, you know i was thinking about how outrageous this all was and what i was going to say. While i was listening to your introthere. And i decided actually that there's somebody that said it better than i could. So i'm going to pull this up. Here's j. D.
Vance october
9, 2016 when we were all seeing all of this. Trump makes people i care about afraid. Immigrants, muslims, because of this, i find him reprehensible. God wants better of us. So, everything that j. D. Vance said right then in 2016 is exactly right. It's irreprehensible. He persists in doing it plus encouraging others saying you're a patriot if
you postthese
racist cat memes shows a
deep corrupting baddens
of maga and of my party, my former party. And i see a difference between this dehumanization. It's this
no cost cruelty.
At least no cost in their eyes and the focus of it is immigrants, brown people. People they deem shouldn't be here. I mean, i guess we're now at the point where, that kind of nihilism. That kind of toxicity. That kind of dehumanization is something embraced by just regular old republicans in the party. Not even people that are in office. But everyone that jumps in. You see cruz' tweets. Migrants are eating cats, whatever he said. There isn't a dog whistle. It didn't a clever, it's not a joke. I guess it's a joke but it's a straight
racist joke.
And so, you know you can't imagine a
scenario right
where you know they were pushing something about ukrainian migrants or belgium immigrants who are coming here and who are like oh, these people are abducting your dogs and eating. They would never say that about, like you can't even imagine what that would sound like. Which reveals just how plainly racist it is. The fact that not only are many of the republicans getting in on it but nobody is saying, at least back in 2017, 2018. In the early years of trump. There would be some republicans in congress that would say, this grosses me out. I still like him for the policies. I don't like the
meme tweets.
You got at least that. The verbal acknowledgment that they knew it was wrong. You don't even get that now. Like there's no, the party is fully on board for the grossest
like conspiracy mo
new
mongeri ng
and racism. Now you see it's finding an
intersack intersactum.
The fact that loomer is on the
trump plane
and at the 9/11 memorial.
Laura loomer
said she would be fine being the
press secretary
if he wins. That might be a twisted parity, that's an actual prospect. I wonder what you make of marjory taylor green of all people and lindsey graham sounding notes of caution of trump getting too close to loomer.
Marjory taylor green
called loomers
comments racists
and lindsey graham has i think also cautioned trump to keep his distance though not in those words. Do you, first of all, how true do those
words ring
coming from someone like marjory taylor green and someone like lindsey graham who you have had, you know the history there between him and trump? i guess marjory taylor green is right on this one. Broken clocks and all. This whole
thing and tom
tillis, i've seen other people criticize her. The whole thing is absurd. That these congressional republicans like, oh there's a racist
conspiracy monger
on the trump plane. Like yeah, the person who's name is on the side of the plane fits that description. They can't criticize trump, right. So you have to criticize loomer. Loomer is extremely off the. You usually enjoy the local mayors or your best volunteer. Religious
leader or something.
This crazy internet troll is the person who gets invited with him to multiple stops is lunacy and it's not surprising that someone like that would be in the
trump administration
2. 0. Trump had this box, remember he's sitting there in
the box
like
king lear.
The people that were in
the box
with him were a little less crazy than loomer but it was marjory taylor green, it was gates. The magiest, most online, most controversial members were around him sitting him in the box. It wasn't the
lindsey grahams
or
tom tellicks.
These are the people that would be around him if he won again. I will just say, in a dark note. Like the
overton window
shifted to the green and paulina
luna and marjory
taylor green are on the more normal end of the spectrum. That's how crazy things have gotten. I mean, i think it bares mentioning the left has memes too.
Kamala harris
had
brat summer.
The
coconut tree thing.
I think we have exampleless of examples of that. There was j. D vance on a couch. But couches are not people. They were not
bomb threats
being called in. There were not
schools closing.
I just wonder if it tells you something about the inherent nature of the
republican party
at this point. The toxicity and the poison around the internet is so sort of, it is so, segregated meme. You're making fun of the politician, right. You should have a little bit of leeway. When you're spoofing people in this country has a long history. To me that's within the normal downs of politics. Creating
fake conspiracy
narratives that
target groups
with just totally lies.
Objective racist
lies. You would never say that about other groups. It's totally due to their race and
immigrant status.
Yes that is only happening on one side of the aisle among one political party and there's no reason to try to pretend otherwise.
Tim miller,
it is always good to talk to you even when the
subject matter.
Kamala harris
trys to woo voters in two pennsylvania counties that donald trump won in 2020. We're going to tell you all about that but first. Republican justices on the north
carolina supreme court
do donald trump a solid by removing a third
party challenger
from the ballot and voters are going to pay the price. We're going to explain, next. This is better. This is better. That's better. And that. Even this. Dupixent is an
addon treatment
for specific types of
moderatetosevere asthma.
It works with your
asthma medicine
to help improve
lung function.
That's pretty good! dupixent is not for sudden
breathing problems.
It's proven to help prevent
asthma attacks.
It can reduce or even eliminate oral steroids. And doesn't that make things better? dupixent can cause allergic reactions that can be severe. Tell your doctor right away if you have rash,
chest pain,
worsening shortness of breath, tingling or numbness in your limbs. Tell your doctor about new or worsening
joint aches
and pain or a parasitic infection. Don't change or stop asthma medicines including steroids, without talking to your doctor. When you can get more out of your lungs, you can du more with less asthma. And isn't that better? ask your doctor about dupixent, the most prescribed biologic in asthma. My life is full of questions. . . How do i clean an aioli stain? use tide. Do i need to pretreat guacamole? not with tide. Why do we even buy napkins? thankfully, tide's the answer to almost all of them. do crabs have eyebrows? except that one. For all of life's
laundry questions.
. . It's got to be tide. My
little miracle is beckett.
(a thousand years by christina perri) i have died every day waiting for you we wouldn't be where we are without saint jude. And in turn, we wouldn't be where we are without those people that have donated. () it was supposed to be the first state in the nation to send out 2024

general election ballots but instead, early voting in north carolina is officially on hold. That's because the state's
republican controlled supreme court has granted third
party candidate robert f. Kennedy jr. His request to remove his name from the
north carolina ballot. Now the republican justices on the board granted this request even after it came five days after the state's official deadline. As a result nearly
3 million ballots that were already printed must now be destroyed. That is forcing election officials to miss a key deadline mandated by the state and to scramble to meet another deadline mandated by federal law. The
court decision will shorten the early
voting period in north carolina which is going to affect thousands potentially millions of voters including those who attended kamala harris' massive rallies in the
state yesterday. But there is someone who will likely benefit from this. Donald trump, who now know longer has a third
party challenger on the ballot and who is currently tied with kamala harris. For harris, that alone is an achievement given that
barack obama has been the only democratic presidential nominee to win north carolina in nearly 50 years. The
harris campaign believes that it too has a chance to win the state but only if people can actually vote. Joining me now is
mark joseph stern,
senior writer covering courts for the law. His latest piece is called
robert f. Kennedy jr. a critical swing state. This piece is
essential reading. I think a lot of people had no idea what was happening in north carolina and indeed there are some
developments tonight. But let's just first rewind to the outset of all of this.
Rfk jr. Wants to get off the ballot in the state. You know transparently partisan maneuver to help the guy he's endorsed. Donald trumps and the courts decide hey why not. Can you talk a little bit about the process this happened? rfk jr. Waited days after the deadline in north carolina to remove his name from the ballots then he filed this overdue request. The
election board said hey, we actually can't accommodate this. We've already printed millions of ballots. We've designed more than 2,300 ballots for every individual
county and locality. We have to send them out under
state law by september 6th. It will take us like 23 days at least to do this. So we just can't accommodate what you're asking of us. He went to court and secured a 32 decision by the
north carolina supreme court. That is a court by elected republicans who issued i think a lawless and rather shameless decision accusing the
election board and the state's very hard working and under paid election officials of engaging in misconduct. Of attempting to undermine
rfks request because they somehow didn't read his mind and anticipate earlier that he would seek to withdraw his name from the ballot. State supreme court ordered the state elections and every
county board of elections to violate the law. To violate
state law which requires these ballots start going out by
september 6th to destroy
3 million ballots. To redesign more than 3,400 ballots and to try to do all of this before the federal deadline of
september 21st which congress has said, at which point these ballots have to go out to overseas and military voters. Tonight the
state board elections is saying they have raced to accommodate this order. That they have purchased
special printers and stationed them around the state to reprint millions of ballots. That they will spend probably millions of dollars in order to try to get these ballots out by
september 24th to the general public that means the ballots will start going out more than two weeks after they were required to. They're still encouraging people to do all this as fast as possible because they don't know if they'll be able to run this election as smoothly as they had hoped. All of this to accommodate r. F. K. Jr. 's attack. That's the key part of it right. I believe
wake county it's going to cost $60,000.
Election workers are going to have to work through the weekend to accommodate rfk jr. A proxy for trump. How disturbed are you by the decision of
the state supreme court and like how much do you read into that in terms of any future
election related concerns or lawsuits? so i'm really disturbed and i just want to get into the weeds a little. Because the north
carolina supreme court had years ago ruled that,
the state constitution has this provision that guaranteed free elections. It says all elections shall be free. The north
carolina supreme court says that restricts gerrymandering. They got the free
elections clause and said this is a meaningless clause and there's no real guarantee for free elections. But when rfk went to the north
carolina supreme court and said he wanted to be removed from the ballot. Those same republican justices sited the free
elections clause in
the state constitution as the reason why he could be removed from the ballot and why the entire early
voting process had to be abridged and thrown into chaos. It's sheer partisan hackery for judges that were elected on partisan line. It tells me these guys are very much putting their thumb on the scale for trump in this election. We know more republicans vote early and vote by mail. It seems these justices are doing everything they can to cause chaos,
wreak havoc, make it more difficult for democrats especially to cast their votes in 2024, to try to help trump prevent kamala harris from making this the
tipping vote state. All states matter, right. The freedom and the fairness of our elections is of utmost concern to our representative of democracy. The fact of the matter is, kamala harris did two events in
north carolina yesterday. The campaign believes this as you said could be the
tipping point for a potential victory. And it's not the only state where this kind of chicanory which is probably being optimistic is under way. Do you have thoughts on the efforts going on in nevada or pennsylvania? two other crucially important states. In pennsylvania republicans are fighting hard to require the nullification of
mail ballots. That are dated incorrectly. A
minor error that shouldn't really matter. The state supreme
court today said we're not going to decide that issue yet. That leaves it as a bomb under the table if that election is close. In nevada, one of trump's own lawyers is representing
jill stine, asking the u. S. Supreme court to put her back on the
nevada ballot after she was kicked off. No big mystery
alex why a trump attorney would be representing
jill stein here. Chicanary is the right word. This is all to ensure that in a close election, they can either flip it toward trump or if it still goes toward harris to claim there was
fraud or wrong doing and deny the legitimate of the results. Are you telling me trump doesn't just want to have a system where voters gets their issues heard. You need to know what's happening at the
state level as we head into november. Thanks for your writing, mark. Thanks, alex. Donald trump gets another small win in court but the clock is still ticking. And kamala harris went to the republican country but she might just find some willing to listen to her. We're going to talk about that

Vice president kamala harris was in johnstown and
pennsylvania today. Both of which happened to be in counties that donald trump won by significant numbers in 2020. Republicans see a reproductive freedoms as critical. That's why donald trump made a garbled explanation of what he called fertilization but probably meant
invitro fertilization. There is
health care that will impact families that will impact communities. Joining me now is alexis miguel johnson, ceo of the
parent election fund. Thank you for joining me. I'm really interested in the choice that vice president harris made today to campaign two counties,
luzern county and
cambria county which are decidedly republican counties. Biden got 42% and in
cambria trump got 68% of the vote. Biden only got 30. 8. Now, i know abortion is an issue that motivates voters. It sort of seems toutful that they would win that seems doubtful that they would win this county. Can you talk a little bit about how you see
abortion target the sort of center of the electorate. First of all let me be clear. The vice president has connected the dots on all of these issues. She understands that the fundamental right to control your own body, as it relates to abortion is also related to contraception. It's also related to ivf, it is also related to our democracy and i think she's been doing a beautiful job, out on the
campaign trail. Helping voters understand really getting into the granular of what that will mean in people's practical lives right. In telling the stories as she has done incredibly during the debate. I think to go into the belly of
the beast as she is doing right now in pennsylvania, counties that are rich in support for trump is actually really testing the assumption of what we know. Right. That the majority of american
support access to reproductive freedom. And she's going to go find those voters and make the case to them that you know, it's one thing to support and stand in reproductive freedom and it's also critically important to elect champions for reproductive freedom if you want to ensure that a state like pennsylvania which currently you know has access to abortion does not actually end up with a national
abortion ban under donald trump, effectively. You know what i think is so striking and the argument she's making to those voters. For the first time we have a national candidate for president, a woman who is able to tell the stories of the women who have been affected by the trump. Basically stun them into their senses. And i think the right is understanding that.
John mcabie reacted in disbelief. Can someone track down the women kamala harris says are bleeding out in parking lots because roe v. Wade was overturned. Don't
hold your breath. As it comes,
rolling stone was able to track down the woman. Unlike the stories about people eating pets. Can you talk a little bit about sort of the evolution on this. I mean, look, it has been heartbreaking. We have heard numerous stories, public stories of women who have been sent to
hospital parking lots to wait until they are just a little bit more in danger of their lives in order for a doctor to justify the treatment. It is, it is literally the first time i heard that story, one of those stories was during sb 8 in texas a year before dobbs as they were testing what it would look like to push such a ban through. And now we are here hearing more of them. I mean it is astonishing to me that you know, that they would be questioned. I think that, we are also at a moment where, people shouldn't have to tell their stories in such a, in such a challenging way. Like they're privacy. We're asking them to share the most intimate parts of their lives and their experiences and prove that. And, and also very appreciative because
story telling is actually what helps us break down the stigma. But i think what the president is doing and what many of us are out there in terms of educating people about the, you know the very, very deep impact is trying to make it plain to folks that this is not a game. This is people's lives. This is, this is what when you don't have access to health care,
people experience and when you put limitations on what doctors could do to support their patients, you ask them to call lawyers before they provide care. These are the kind of things that can happen. So i think that disruption that's happening in
health care is coming through these stories is the best way to kind of
put a name and a face on the data, right. That almost all of all women are living in a state with an abortion ban. More than half of black women are living in a state with an abortion ban. They're incredibly brave for those who are sharing it with us right now. As a matter of strategy to react to those stories with
disbelief and skepticism and say prove it does not seem like the right response.

documents case in florida. The case was thrown out. With deranged
jack smith,
deranged prosecutor. That was former president and convicted
felon donald trump. There is no question that trump's legal strategy of delay and then delay some more appears to be paying off at least for now. Joining me to discuss all that is
mary mccord,
form earl acting assistant general and cohost of the indispensable
podcast prosecuting donald trump. Mary it has been a moment but that does not mean things have not been happening in our
justice system as it pertains to donald trump. Yesterday
jack mcaffy dismissed two counts. But still eight
felony counts remain. I do wonder, the supreme court's immunity decision and what that does to these ongoing cases. Do you think the
georgia case survives in the wake of the supreme court's immunity decision. Because
judge mcaffey has not ruled on that yet. I think that
judge mcaffey will have to take briefing and go through any kind of allegations of official acts and do if kind of parsing that judge is doing right now. That is not what happened in his
ruling yesterday. In fact, he makes it very clear in a footnote, my ruling here is not based on the immunity decision, it has not been briefed, it was not argued. I'm not even considering it. His ruling was based on arguments that frankly the entire indictment should be dismissed based on the
supremacy clause. And an argument that basically the federal government is the only place where these kind of charges could be brought. Which is of course interesting, because in federal court, of
course donald trump's lawyers are saying none of this could be brought in federal court either. And what
judge mcaffey did is he relied on an 1890s case, not kidding. 1890 that stands for the principle that when you have perjury in a federal court, and there is a federal
perjury statute that applies to it. Then there's not a
state interest in also prosecuting that conduct. So the three charges that he dismissed were charges that involved one the complaint that donald trump and
john eastman had filed in federal court that contained false statements. He said that's something that federal charges could take care of so we don't have a state interest. And then also, the transmission of false statements, the electoral, the fraudulent
electoral college to the federal court in georgia. Which is one of the many destinations that electors have to submit. Those could be prosecuted in federal court under
federal law therefor the state doesn't have an interest. He denied the motion to dismiss the entire indictment. There's plenty of other false statement charges that remain. Including the fraudulent
e lek tores creating these documents themselves and transmitting them to the archivist. To everyone. It is a change in the indictment. There are still many many counts that remain including the
rico count against donald trump. Yeah, don't tell donald trump that, because in his mind it's all going away. I do have to ask on the note. As we talk about charges that are going away and cases that are effected. Tonya duncan in dc there's thinks going on. Trump's response is due on the 17th and the government's reply to donald trump
is due october 29th. So these are briefings on a number of topics including immunity. My question to you is, there's a fairly narrow question. Are we going as the public to get any of this? are we going to hear any of the arguments. I mean hear, are we going to see any of the filings. Do you think we'll see any of the evidence right now. Some of it is under seal. Do you think it will remain under seal. If there's more evidence brought up about trump's potential
election interference that's a
bomb shell for the political climate that we now exist in. It's unclear. Because her order did not say anything about filing under seal. And at the argument last week, there was no mention by the government or mr. Trump's attorneys or the judge of filing under seal. Now i do think, that there are protective orders about confidential. There are things that the
special office would submit in their briefings that they might think might need to be under seal in which case they might file under seal and then the judge would probably order them to redact only those things that needed to be kept under seal and filed a private document that may be redacted. What we expect to see and i do think some of this will be publicly available is exactly what the
special counsel said he would do. Outline their reasoning for why the
superceding indictment does not include the pressure on
state legislators, the
speech on january 6th that incited a mob. And they will also try to accomplish why the conversations with mike pence, the pressure i should say on mike pence to refuse to count the legitimate electoral ballots from the
swing states. They will argue that, that official
act presumption of immunity with respect to that is, rebutted. Because that was not the president acting in his official, you know acting with respect to something that he has
anything authority over. That's going to be a very explosive series of arguments to, regardless of whether we actually hear about them.
Mike pence and his conversations with donald trump is something that i think everybody wants to know more about. Mary mccormick it's great to have your level of expertise with us
