A man is in custody today, after shots were fired in what the fbi is calling an apparent attempted assassination of Donald Trump at his Golf Course in west Palm Beach, florida, yesterday. The former president posted on Social Media last night that he was rushed to safety during the incident, writing it was certainly an interesting day. Trump also thanked secret Service And Law enforcement, writing in all capital letters, quote, the job done was absolutely outstanding. Officials say trump waS Playing a round of golf near his Maralago Home. Around 2 00 p. M. when a secret Service Agent spotted a rifle with a scope in the bushes outside the course. The Secret Service then opened fire on the man who was able to get away. Fortunately, we were able to locate a witness that came to us and said, hey, i saw the guy running out of the bushes. He jumped into a black nissan. And i took a picture of the vehicle and the tag. Which was great. In the bushes where this guy was. Is an Ak47 Style Rifle with a scope, two backpacks which were hung on the fence that had Ceramic Tile in them. And a gopro which he was going to take pictures of. The tips from that Witness Led to an arrest. The man taken into custody was identified as 58yearold ryan wesley routh, according to Law Enforcement officials. His identity, we should note, was not released during yesterdays news conference. Trump left the motorcade a couple hours later and headed back to his maralago resort, according to a source familiar with the matter. A source tels Nbc News that the incident will not affect trumps campaign this week which includes stops in north carolina, and washington, d. C. Vice president harris released a statement that she was, quote, deeply disturbed by the former Assassination Attempt of former President Trump today, adding that she is thankful that trump is safe. Yesterdays attempt was two months after the attempt on the former president s life in july at a Campaign Rally until pennsylvania. Joining us david row. Thank you for starting us off. Give us the latest about the incident yesterday. Looks like the gunman got within about 500 yards the former President Trump. Whats unclear, whether he actually fired any rounds at him. It says four to six rounds fired, definitely the Secret Service fired at him. He fled. But concerning, regarding the Secret Service, 500 yards is within the range of the Arstyle Rifle he had with him. The question is how he was able to get in the bushes and how he was able to hide there. What more do we know about the suspect and possible information. He has traveled the world, he was in ukraine in 2022. And volunteered to fight in ukraine. He was rejected by ukraine armed forces. He complained about that on Social Media. Its unclear what the association was. He was moving around the world. And one of the charges, he had a machine gun, most recently, in hawaii. So, lots of questions when he got to florida, where he got the weapon, and again, his central motive. Yeah, theres certainly other chatter as to some of his beliefs on Social Media that have not been verified yet. But you say that this incident, much like The One in pennsylvania, shows the growing threat of political violence committed by mentally unstable people. Tell us more. Yeah, my colleague heard this from Law Enforcement individuals, you have individualS Potentially disturbed we dont know about his situation at thiS Point but who take action based on things this see online and heated rhetoric thats happened in multiple incidents and the Assassination Attempt in pennsylvania. And certainly, there was an attempt on College Students in vermont. Its not as if theres a cell of people, group of people working together to try to assassinate President Trump or Joe Biden or Kamala Harris. Its now individuals acting on their own. So, this is, of course, the second Assassination Attempt in two months time against former President Trump. The Secret Service is under immense pressure, imminute immense scrutiny with what happened in pennsylvania. Tell us how that would add to the scrutiny . Theyre under scrutiny. The director resigned after pennsylvania. And theres question, trump is receiving Security Staffing for a president ial nominee, for a former president. If the president had been on the Golf Course yesterday, the entire Golf Course would have been shut down. They could approve this for more protection of trump, he would get the same level of a sitting president given these threats. Well see what happens in the days ahead. There will be pushes for republicans for more security for trump but theres no question the Secret Service has to step up here. And lastly, what comes next in terms of the investigation and the suspect in terms of arraignments, what are the next couple days like . Hell be arraigned. The charges are primarily federal ones. The key thing is what hes telling Law Enforcement officials now. Often suspects in this situation are killed. Hes alive, he could be speaking and describing his motive to Law Enforcement officials. Well see whats in the court papers, whats in the indictment. But another close call. And another serious issue of political violence in this country. People have talked about it a lot and its happened again. And there are calls from last night saying violence has no place in this country. Do you think the debate mattered . Yeah, i think the debate mattered to a certain extent, but i think the debate in a way, is sort of a snapshot in time. Jonathan, were just a week out from the debate, and what weve seen from the debate is a massively changed News Cycle, including a second Assassination Attempt against former President Trump. So, i think were living in this News Cycle and this Election Cycle where theres constantly new developments, and voters are having to keep up with those developments. Where i think the debate mattered, though. I think we could potentially see this on polls down the line. Im particularly interested to see how this impacts independent Swing Voters is Donald Trumps rhetoric on immigration, particularly that rhetoric on immigrants from springfield, ohio. Look, talking to republicans last week, the sense i got was the former president missed an opportunity during that debate to hit the Biden Harris Administration on immigration and contrast what he would do on the issue. Instead, he was voicing these unfounded, baseless Conspiracy Theories that seemed to be a distraction, and have pretty dire or threatening consequences.
