Thank you so much for letting us into your home during these extraordinary times. We are grateful. The beat with Ari Melber starts right now. Hi, ari. Hi, nicole. Welcome to the beat. Im Ari Melber. The top story, the 2024 campaign. We are one week out from the campaign. The Harris Campaign is hammering this stark contrast as what they see as a key Selling Point in her campaign and its current momentum. Today brand new, i can show you another contrast, we can tell you that now both nominees have done this key Interview Appearance here taking questions from several reporters on stage for the national association of black journalists. Trump did his all the way back 48 days ago. Harris did hers this afternoon, today in philadelphia. Its a Split Screen across time which shows the very different approaches on substances, facts and certainly style. I dont think ive ever been asked a question so in such a horrible manner, first question. You dont even say hello, how are you . First of all, let me just say, it is good to be with the national association of black journalists. I thank you for the work you do and your members do every day. I have been the best president for the black population since abraham lincoln. Thats my answer. Better than President Johnson . So i appreciate the spirit of the question. Ill tell you, ive often been asked this question in a way ive had to respond bring first saying that i think its very important how do you define dei . Go ahead. Diversity, equity, inclusion . Yeah. Go ahead. Is that your definition . Give me a definition. That is literally the words. Give me a definition. Youre not asking me a question. Define it for me. When you are bestowed with a microphone that is that big, there is a profound responsibility that comes with this. Contrast pretty clear. Few leaders, by the way, could really claim abraham lincolns mantle. Historians havent put trump, Biden Or Harris on that level. Black voters have repeatedly rejected any idea of trump as a lincoln level figure. Since he mentioned that there, ill remind you over 85 of black voters cast ballots against Donald Trump in 2022 and 2016, an opposition that has been overwhelming and consistent. Today harris kept taking questions as a chance to emphasize how she argues that her policies, especially on the economy, can help all working class americans, including black households. Its an opportunity economy. What we can do to grow. A 25,000 Downpayment Assistance so they can just get their foot in the door. My plan has said no family, no Working Family should pay more than 7 of their income in child care. Understand what the public trust means. Need to speak truth about it in a way that its about driving solutions. Thats Kamala Harris out today doing an interview with journalists and making a pitch. You could boil that pitch down to something like solution with some details and options. Trumps is grievances, what you see memorialized on your screen, his pitch could also be boiled down to concepts of a plan as he conceded that he didnt have an actual plan, only concepts of one, when it came to developing Health Care Policy for americans, something a former president might have figured out by now. The Concepts Part speaks for itself, a kind of a dog ate my Homework Vibe which, by the way, continues to spawn mockery days and now a week after the debate. Some likening it to the great hbo succession character, cousin greg. Concepts of a plan. Or George Costanza who is known as an unemployed guy who always has concepts of a plan but never a full plan. Now trumps attacks are well known and they may be wearing thin. What once drew outrage or sustained Media Cycles of reaction are now often largely dismissed ormoced as i showed you. I mention that because in this new Interview Today Harris did issue the usual condemnations of certain trump low lights. As you know when you watch an interview, someone asks you something you are expected to address it in a certain way. I want to point out she also found ways to move past it. Notice how she hits this very different tone than some of trumps past foes, say, in congress who seem to approach a 10 every time theyre asked about trumps latest outrage or even possibly illegal demand or plan. If the trump reruns have their own sort of diminishing flavor, what im about to show you here is how harris, new character, saw the old seasons along with the rest of us, seems to be bridging to something else, asking americans to go beyond the reruns and the predictable cycle. Yes, she can channel the exhaustion of that history that we have lived together and she is a participant as the Vice President , but also she is clearly using this Appearance Today to use this as a chance to see through it and turn that page. I think most people in our country, regardless of their race, are starting to see through this nonsense and to say, you know what, lets turn the page on this. The this is exhausting and its harmful. And its hateful. And and and grounded in some ageold stuff that we should not have the tolerance for. So lets turn the Page And Chart a new way forward. There are different ways to reject a problem. One is to react to it, to fixate on it, to even say its so important we have to obsess over it, and there is a time and a place for that. Theres not one solution here. Im not trying to over simplify, but theres also a balance. Yes, experts say trump, a convicted felon, should not be normalized and Everyone Move on without dealing with it. The on the other hand, that is a challenge for all society, not just public officials or his opponents who in a democracy also have to spend time and energy advancing their own ideas, their plans, and their own style not just living in this Echo Chamber of outrage for him. So maybe some of the early reactions to trump were over raught, enabled him at times to get too much attention, energy and emotion. As one lyricist added how time can add perspective, things i once cried about are now laughable. Well, harris can certainly laugh. Today she even parodied these to corner or diminish her joyous personality traits, she discussed how joy can, of course, coexist with serious pursuits. Is joy important to you to insert into this election . What do you make of republicans using that as a way to suggest that you are not a serious candidate . Well, sometimes i think, and ill say to whoever the young people are who are watching this, there are sometimes when your adversaries will try to turn your strength into a weakness. Dont you let them. Dont you let them. I find joy in the american people. I find joy in the ambition of the people. I find joy in the dreams of the people. I find joy in building community, and i think we should all find joy and have a sense of optimism about who we are as americans and what we mean to each other and what we can do to lift each other up. Okay. So whatever you think about these two nominees of these two major parties, we do know harris comes by her joy honestly. Its been in The Public Eye for a long time now. Thats a fine chop. Right . I say this with respect, senator, youre kind of a show off. I like it. Yes. I like it. This is the song of the summer, okay. The you need to tell the d. J. To have that going. All right. There you have it. A lot of those songs have been blasting well through the summer. Harris fans, of course, dubbed it a brought summer linked with beyonce for the freedom anthem. Just last week harris got the huge Taylor Swift nod which has driven Voter Registrations and we havent seen this kind of cultural excitement. Artists coming towards a campaign and while numerically few can top Taylor Swift, i will tell you by way of background, this is the news, Billie Eilish is another one of the top young artists today. At 22 years old, she has 9 grammys already. She bested Imagine Dragons On The Hot Rock And AlternativeRock Chart with the big hit birds of a feather. She makes music with her talented Producer Musician Brother finneas. Thats background to another big deal to a lot of people. They came out today endorsing harris posting a joint video to eilishs over 110 Million instagram followers. Today is national Voter Registration day. We are voting for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz because they are fighting to protect our reproductive freedom, our planet and our democracy. We should stick together i want to thank all the women in the past who have been the reason that i can be the way that i am and do what i want. We cant let extremists control our lives, our freedoms and our future. The only way to stop them and the dangerous project 2025 agenda is to vote and elect Kamala Harris. Vote like your life depends on it, because it does. Vote like your life depipds on it. Sent out in her own words with her brother there to over 110 Million followers. Billie eilish is Advocating A Future with Kamala Harris in charge. As the singer once said, you should see me in a crown. Im going to run this town. And if harris makes trump a twotime election loser, then the hook would also apply. The watch Me MakeEm Bow One By one by one. You should see me in a crown. Your silence is my favorite sound. Bars. Now, these are heady times for the Harris Campaign, winning endorsements that the last democratic nominee, the current president , im talking about joe biden, endorsements in the culture that he did not have. And theres enthese see amp here thats hard to organize on the fly and pretty impossible to purchase, and we have studied campaigns and this cycle before. The evidence shows this kind of momentum does help, thats why campaigns would rather have it than not, but none of this votes by itself. And note one other thing, these very involved civically engaged sophisticated young artists, i quoted one just now, whos 22 years old, most people at the age of 22 statistically do not vote at all, let alone get informed about voting in advance of an election and encourage others to vote, they keep folding their pitches and endorsements of harris to also conjoin with the direct appeals for people who listen to them to register and to do it today, to do it with a link when they put it out there. And the campaigns amidst all of this are targeting the key states to try to get people voting on both sides. Early voting starts this week. Harris and vance have split up the Blue Wall and they have company. Trump is in Michigan Tonight with his aide turned Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee sanders. Its all happening. Maya wylie and john crass are here. Here question. If you cant see whats behind all this, how do you already know, its jeep . Probably the same way you know if a trex is chasing a jeep wrangler. Is getting away. Yep or if it takes you places that make you say, woah. And their Hair Looks like this. Or someone says, the doors come off. Then you just know what it was. What it is. And what it always will be. Because when youre an original, theres only one. Psst psst aaaah with flonase, allergies dont have to be scary. Spray flonase sensimist daily, for nondrowsy, longlasting relief. In a scentfree, fine mist. Psst psst flonase. All good. We must and will win and that through these next 49 days we continue to build community and coalition. Lets leave something for the work we are doing right now that lifts people up, that strengthens people, that strengthens communities, right . Kamala Harris Campaigning, and im joined by maya wylie, President And Ceo of the leadership conference. A new member wore, remember, you are a Wylie And Mary john crass. Welcome to both of you. Maya, it was a real contrast to look at Harris Today before the Nabja And Trump in the memory hole. Its the same contrast they got at the debate and one the Harris Campaign thinks is good for them. One thinks its important to be respectful. One campaign thinks its important to speak to the questions and answer them. Another campaign has been unabashedly respectful and in some instances outwardly racist. It really is important to call it what it is because we have heard explicit racism out of this campaign, as well as sexism. So i think its no surprise that there was a marked difference today, but theres also like really important to understand just how critical the rhetoric is to mobiliing people to show up to vote, which is interesting. Were looking at haitian community, for instance, in florida, often a community that does not always show up to vote when registered and able and yet this is really a reminder that the stakes are quite high in this election. I think the way the candidates are showing up is going to suggest which way theyll vote when they do. She didnt actively fight with the people asking hard questions. That was a stark contrast. They asked hard questions and they pushed her. They asked followup questions and they kept going. And it wasnt like a Softball Interview by any stretch of the imagination. She talked about springfield. She talked about gaza. The she covered a lot of broad swath of topics, and it was, you know, definitely a very sharp contrast to trump. You cant imagine trump saying any of the kind of policy explanations. You know, she was explaining her first time Home Buyer 15,000, 25,000 incentive. That kind of stuff, Trump Cant speak that faciley. It was detailed to the point of dry, maya, which is okay. She had one line that Parents Shouldnt have to pay more than 7 yeah. Of their income in child care. Not exactly the fdr new deal. I dont know why 7 is the moral ceiling, but in contrast to concepts of a plan, this is a person running on specific ideas and economic values for the country. Even though this was explicitly, as mentioned, a black Journalist Conference which matters because representation matters, the conversation largely was about domestic policy and how do you help people in this environment, not some sort of cutouts. You mean it was about what people actually want to know and understand from the candidates, ari . Is that what youre saying . Sort of what i mean. Yeah, interesting. Look, heres the other interesting thing i find about this, even the point you just made about, its a little dry to actually know and understand policy and have the specificity of plan that has a statistic like 7 in it and yet we have heard from far too many people, well, what is her plan . She doesnt have a plan. And then she gets sometimes, not from you, but sometimes actually attacked when she does. And her credentials by particularly the other campaign, not uncommon for One Campaign to say, our candidate is better qualified than your candidate, but in this case it was an actual denial that she had any qualification. And we see her time and time again show that whatever you think of her and whomever youre going to choose to vote for, you cant say that about her. And i think its really important to mark that because were not always getting, i think, sufficient equal coverage of each candidate fairly, and i think Thats Something that has to change. Yeah. That also goes to the reported setup, molly, which is how much people are learning and where theyre taking their cues from. Yes. There are people in public life who have a very good Faith Basis for opposing Donald Trump and he has bedeviled many parts of our system. In contrast to people that hit ten every time, of course as a candidate harris, as i say, answered the question. She says, thats wrong but lets turn the Page And Move on. She is not signaling, if she will, to her allies and followers, lets spend the week being outraged. Thats how we should spend this week, next week and every week. She says, this is wrong and she pivots to what she would do. She makes the case against trump and the case for herself. One of the things i heard her do today, she talked about her experience as a sex crimes prosecutor. She talked about when she saw people who had been hurt by guns, and when she talked to them and what that was like as a real life experience. I think that was really a good way to make the case for Herr Self because remember, she was first the sex crimes prosecutor, and then Attorneys General for the state that has the fifth largest economy in the world, then senator, then a Vice President. So she really is in fact, shes one of the
