We are just 45 days from the election of the next President Of The United States and voters are already heading to the polls in some states. Early inperson voting kicked off friday in minnesota, south dakota, and virginia. Overnight, in arizona, The State Supreme Court just guaranteed full Ballot Access for nearly 100,000 voters following a dispute over a clerical error related to the States Proof of citizenship requirements for voting. Meanwhile, Vice President Kamala Harris is working to maintain her postdebate balance with a pair of Battleground Events on friday, a series of New Polls also showing democrats gaining support. Folks, this race remains very, very close. Harris framed the choice for voters Last Night at a rally in madison, wisconsin this way. And in many ways, youve heard me say before, is an unserious man. But the consequences of putting him back in the White House are extremely serious, extremely serious. Joining us now to get in on all of this, Msnbc Analyst and professor at princeton university, Eddie Cloud and Michael Cohen, Donald Trumps former personal attorney. It is very tight, part of this being very tight is because economy is top of mind for folks. A share of registered voters have more trust to handle the economy, 46 harris, 46 trump. What is it about this idea people have, Michael Cohen, that he is somehow this economic genius . Statement and yet, we have all turned around and seen the number of bankruptcies, we have seen the number of failed business ventures. During the greatest boom in u. S. Economy, his own stock, the trump media that has that untrue social platform is down 70 . Everything else is sort of rising up with your 401 k , but not if you are an investor in the trump media stock, and yet, yet, weve got to ask princeton what his position is. I dont have an answer as to how he is managed to fool so many People Day in and day out. That was a part of my job. It is to me, michael, and i will let you take it away, a testament to Personal Branding and how solidified this idea is, this image of him became during those apprentice years ask some great businessman, a reputation that was earned, not on balance sheets, but on reality tv. And that is exactly right. I think eddie and you and i have talked about this, you have so eloquently over recent years, especially, framed this for the country to understand this space we are in. You have an individual who is very good and creative in a space, a wholly fictional space, reality tv, where it was actually rather scripted. But the reality was, for a lots of folks who had checked out of politics, he became their avatar to check back in and they liked the brand. They like the fake botulism, they like the fake boss. They like the guy who is behind the desk saying, youre fired. His viewers became his voters, now they have aligned and locked in with him, that is why he is feeling is so low. It is always tapping out of 46, 47 , but what about the rest of us . What does it say that the face of everything that we know to the discussion of what is happening in places like North Carolina, where the party is Leveling Up some of the most vile kind of candidates that you can imagine, people still buy it . I think first of all, we have this kind of combination, mike, the idea that republicans handle the economy better than democrats, joining with the reality television figure. At the same time, there is supposed to be an economic powerhouse here there is that going on. And then, there is the underneath, this kind of deep uncertainty, this deep panic about the cultural of the landscape of the united states that we really dont like to talk about. We tend to think about this as a traditional type of race, but underneath it is all of this grievance, all of this fear, all of this anxiety that trump has exploited for the better part of his political career. And until we are honest about that, we are going to constantly try to figure out what is going on around these folks, when in fact, what is at the heart of it is that the part of the nation at its founding, and that is who are we as a country . Are we a diverse nation, or are we really just simply white america . And i think that is at the heart of it that we need to get our minds around. Michael cohen Lit Up when you sent that. It reminds me of the movie, who are we . We have lost ourselves and what Donald Trump has done, is he has given the american people, those racist groups, he has given them a platform for which to continue to spew their racist ideology that has been so successfully put under a rock, into a whole in their backyards. He has not opened up pandoras box. And for whatever reason, this is who they want to be. You have talked, Michael Cohen, about how we dont need to interpret Donald Trump, just let the mans words absolutely. Let Donald Trump speak. The more he speaks, the more he tells you who he is. The person he is is not somebody who should be sitting behind the Lincoln Desk in the oval office. That is factual. I want to get into this idea though, youve got the character, the main character in this political melodrama in Donald Trump. Then, you have the real effects and impact of what he represents , and what he has put out there. When you look at, for example, the attacks on our election, you have Vice President Kamala Harris on thursday doing the unite america live streamed with oprah winfrey, taking some notes of that. Lets listen. This is not 2016 or 2020, the stakes are even higher. Remember, two months ago, the United States Supreme Court basically told the former president that he will effectively be immune, no matter what he does in the White House. Think about that. Just imagine, Donald Trump with no guard rails. He, who has vowed to be a dictator on day one, he who has called for quote, determination of the constitution of the united states of america. So, you have this idea that he embodies this attack on the country in such a profound way, and yet, people seem to be okay with that. Yeah, i mean, look, one of the things we have also seen, not only Donald Trump telling you he wants to rewrite the constitution, as if he could. All caps, sharpie. No, not sharpie, crayon, maybe on documents he took from the White House. He also has talked about destroying our Apartheid System of government, getting rid of the legislative branch and judiciary, confirming all power onto himself, making him the king. What else has he done . He has said, he wants everyone going to work in the administration, in his government to sign a loyalty pledge. That is something that you dont see from a president. That is something you see from making, a monarch, supreme leader, not from the President Of The United States. Everything here is wrong. It is all wrong for america, it is wrong for the future of america, and it is wrong for democracy. I think that is a really important point. It turns our attention to Donald Trump. I am really interested in the fact that he is appealing to such a large swath of america. That fact requires us to think about our history. And our history leads us to immediately to the fact that there has always been this democratic undertone to american life. Folks who are not committed to the democratic process, folk who are not committed to the idea of checks and balances, folk who think this is an at the national state, folk who believe that only certain folks should have rights. There has always been this battle. Why else is lincoln saying, we must appear to our better angels . Because there is the fact that there is an ugly underbelly to the country. And what is interesting about Donald Trump is, he has turned the wheel over and we can see the barnacles and all the ugliness underneath. So, a part of our challenge is, not just simply to exceptional lies Donald Trump, our challenge is to understand his attraction. Once we wrap our minds around that, and maybe we can open up the space. And look at the attraction. He has gotten Maca Mike Johnson to get on the mic and talk about how he wants to see america as a white, christian nationalist country again. That is their goal. On top of that, he even has Mark Robinson, a black man from North Carolina, buying into the nonsense. Dont get ahead of us. We will do that and we need you to stick around because we want to talk about trumps hateful rhetoric and the impact of all of that. Donald trump, no surprise, still using Hatred And Blame to drive his president Ial Campaign. Still spreading lies about haitian immigrants in springfield, ohio. He spilled antisemitic tropes at a campaign this week titled, get this, quote, antisemitism in america. I am not going to call this a prediction. In my opinion, the jewish people would have a lot to do with a loss. If i dont win this election and the jewish people would really have a lot to do with that if that happens. Eddie go out and Michael Cohen are back with us. So, eddie, there is really good stuff i think to unpack and The Way to begin with what we heard there, listen to second gentleman doug imhoff, who has not actually responded to trump, the clips that we heard, but speaking more broadly to trumps antisemitic themes he had been Leveling Up, lets listen to what the second gentleman had to say. He is somebody who has had dinner with known antisemites. He is someone who, after the horrific events in charlottesville, where people were actually marking with marching with Tiki Torches saying, jews will not replace us and he said, there are five people on both sides of that. This is a guy who has had a record of thing incredibly vile and antisemitic things. For him to say that, i just almost left at the chutzpah, as we would say, as Gas Lighting. And that is the thing, it is the chutzpah and the Gas Lighting that Donald Trump has perfected in our politics. I am reminded of, for example, the response that republicans had went Joe Biden inferred that the African American vote, remember the African American vote supports democrats, and the Hue And Cry that came from that. Here, you have Donald Trump saying, if i lose the election, it is your fault. And lets be clear, Donald Trump and m. A. G. A. Republicans have traded historic antisemitic tropes for years now. Before this, we heard talk about globalists, before that, we know that they have been the spike in antisemitism that is tied to white christian nationalism. We forget about the tree of life, we forget about all of these things we are really driven by. Remember, great Replacement Theory is being funded by jewish globalists, who were trying to change the democratic nature of the country. Weve had this moment where there was this critique of woke is him on college campuses. Suddenly, wokism became a justification for anti semitism. They were linked, layered, and weve got the strange bedfellows in the aftermath of it. At the heart of what trump stands for is, in so many ways, a deepseated antisemitism that has in some ways fueled the campaign, predicated on revenge and hatred, seems to me. That is the thing, it is not just rhetoric. It is that people become let me also say to michael steele, The Word is chutzpah, almost like you are coughing out a furball that he says the patients have been eating. He has been working on that. But is really important, i have a youtube show, i had a woman from ohio the other day who was on, and it was hysterical, because she said she had 16 dogs and cats. I asked her if anything had come up, because this conversation is so stupid that we have to even engage in it. She said, no. I said, good thing, because you would be considered a caterer. It was a big joke. It is a joke because it is not funny. It is so racist in the core of trumps group, this m. A. G. A. Group, it is so racist, we all need to just expel this ideology out, and that is why i believe that Kamala Harris and Tim Walz are surging, and why the momentum is completely on their side. There is Donald Trump, and then there is trumpism, the thing that we all circled back to me the idea that even as if trump does not win the election, trumpism remains in america. Check out what ramaswamy had to say about this fueling anti black racism. You take 20,000 people who are unprepared to integrate into a committee, dump them into a city of 3000, you will get a reactionary response, and then you demonize the people who have a reactionary response to say, you are blaming me, theyre going to have ill will in this case toward the Haitian Community. It is literally feeling a new wave of antihate against the black community and otherwise that would not exist if it were not from those antihate policies in the first place. Oh my god. Before you give a response, i just have to say, you are full of crap. Look at what the Haitian Community did when they arrived in springfield. Mike, i will give it to you. I was trying to edit myself in somebody ways. A part of it, alicia, is this , but back traded on a range of tropes and bad history. If you look at the debates around immigration in the 1920s, running to 2024 to the johnson immigration act, so many things were said about immigrants, they are not prepared to immigrate into the society. What we know that happened in springfield, you had an influx of folks, they did not have in place the infrastructure around schools and hospitals as they were inviting the labor into the community to revitalize it, but instead, you blame them and honor them and justify the deep seated prejudice against the folks. I would also say though, part of what Donald Trump does, and what you heard me back due, was a message to Latin Americans in this country who said, im not talking about you , you are not them. These people are not doing it correctly. For those of us who have always felt we needed to prove our americanness, we felt that our citizenship in this country was 10 tenuous at best, it was supposed to stroke a fear that these other folks, these immigrants are going to jeopardize the thing we have worked so hard for. You know where the problem comes in where it relates to springfield, ohio, they have spoken to people from springfield, ohio, and they dont feel the same way that Vivek Ramaswamy is trying to state. What Vivek Ramaswamy is doing, and please understand, i know from a personal, from my personal experiences, what he is doing, everything from the Trump Campaign, the trump groups, the Handout Talking Points and the goal is to mash in as many of these races, sexes, xenophobic, islamaphobic, transformative, antisemitic message that they possibly can in one single sentence. That is the thing they are doing. The more you do that, the more Donald Trump appreciates you and the higher you get elevated, until you dont do it and you fall off the ladder. And then you have that point that you just made the tricky magic. Buy into theism, buy into the ugliness and you too can be american. You take that, and we will accept you and the danger that follows from that. To your point, both your point, you have the governor of ohio, governor dewine, was born in springfield, by The Way, and he and his wife have lived in that area for most of their lives, and his connection to the Haitian Community is strong, given his work outside the politics in haiti, noted in an Oped Quote as a supporter of former president Donald Trump and senator j. D. Vance, i am saddened by how they and others continue to compete repeats claims disparaging the migrants in springfield. This rhetoric hurts the people and it hurts those who have spent their lives there. The reality of it is, and you made this point, that the people of springfield, i mean michael, you made this point, the people of springfield are looking around going, what are you people talking about . [ laughter ] it is coming right out of Donald Trumps mein kampf, the same sort of rhetoric where you dehumanize a group of people in order to make them less so that you can abuse them, that is what it is all about. Michael, what is it tell you that Mike Dewine comes out and says, im sticking with this guy, still voting with Donald Trump. Theres the politics, the electoral politics, and i get that. We have a whole lot of republican sticking with Donald Trump who i dont think should be sticking with Donald Trump, but in his role as governor, as someone who knows the haitian people, he has come out and has set the right thing. And i cant detract from that, because that, for me, the more important thing, where do you land when it comes to the racist, xenophobic, hateful language that is being drummed up about good, hardworking immigrants, who have legal protections, who are here legally, and who, by The Way, revitalize a community that had lost 30,000 of its people to other parts of the country. These folks have come in, settled, started businesses. Hell, the Haitian Flag is raised at the statehouse. So, come on people. Mike, unless he goes ahead and he denounces Donald Trump and says, i cannot vote for somebody who speaks like that, the fact that he turns around and says, these allegations are not true, but i still stand behind Donald Trump, he should not be reelected into office. Mark robinson, Republican Nominee for North Carolina governor is refusing to drop out of the race, despite a damning Cnn Report that found between 2008 and 2012, robinson made several inflammatory posts on a pornography websites message board, including calling himself a black nazi. Cant make that one up. And expressing support for reinstating slavery. In fact, he said, hed like to buy a few. Nbc news has not adequately verified that report. Robinson denies he made those posts. Nbc news reports, trump is not pulling his endorsement of robinson, however. The carriers harris campaign is now running this ad in North Carolina. And he has been an unbelievable lieutenant governor, Mark Robinson. Alchemy, there is no compromise on abortion. I think youre better than martin luther king. The abortion in this country, it is about killing the child because you are responsible enough to keep your skirt down. I lived with him a lot, i have gotten to know him, he is outstanding. Donald trump and Mark Robinson, they are both wrong for North Carolina. Alicia , the idea of peas and pods come together for me on this one. You have a situation here where yet again, the republican party, as we saw with herschel walker, as we have seen with other candidates, are promoting and pushing up the Vial Underbelly of the community and saying, hey, this is us. In my view, this represents the Days Trump Maga republican party. These are the kind of candidate that not only are they promoting, but when they found out, they refused to back down from it. They doubled down. The silence from other republican governors, the silence from the congressional delegation, yeah, they are taking down their photos with Mark Robinson, but they are keeping their mouth shut. You and i were on air together as this story was breaking earlier this weekend and we had the same response, which was like, this . This is what it took . Things he may or may not have done and said in private . He has told us very clearly who he is and what he believes and creates a clear contrast. What was interesting to me about that harriswalz add that we are going to see, a lot of it is, it bears no reference to the newest information, to the newest story, because the truth is, you should not need the newest story and the newest allegations in order to know that this man is unfit for office, and that he has, in part, come up through the true Religion Admiration of Donald Trump. That is a choice. It is very much a choice. And its just i dont know why the party has moved in this direction, why they think that is the kind of Leadership Look , let me ask the people of North Carolina, let me ask all of the maga heads out there supporting this guy, when you sit down with your 10yearold Son and you say, here is Somebody Id like you to be like , i want you to follow this guy , who says what he says about women, who wants to be a nazi, i dont care, black or white, nazi is The Apprentice for me is this the Role Model . What does that say . What kind of conversation do you have with your sons and daughters when you sit there in North Carolina, looking at supporting this guy for governor , what are you telling your kids . That is sort of the morality identity question, the one that you were driving at. I want to note the strategic conversation and what is happening among advisors of president trump, this was reported from nbc on friday. There are pockets of advisors within the Trump Campaign who have quietly been urging him to withdraw his endorsement of robinson, but so far, those requests have fallen on deaf deaf ears. Additionally, republican members of the North Carolina congressional delegation, including senators ted Butt And Thom tillis, and republican national committee chairman, michael wadman, from North Carolina, plan to privately urge trump to pull his endorsement of robinson, according to a person familiar with the conversations. Yet another example of in normal times, this would at a minimum the strategic move, given he is already out there, supporting him, and you can go back to our conversation me this was nothing that did it. He wanted to listen to those advisors. The democratic party, on the heels of a terrible debate by the President Of The United States made a public intrigued to him to consider some other options, stepping down. The republicans are quietly having conversations, whispering, could you please tell him, could you pull your endorsement . That tells you all you need to know. The fact that you are saying all of this quietly says, you are not serious. You dont really care. You are just going to go on the record to say, we are telling him not to do it. But put your name on a piece of paper so that we can read your words telling Mark Robinson to step out of the race, or at this point, Donald Trump, to withdraw his endorsement. They wont, because they are Hook Line and sinker all in on what Mark Robinson represents as Todays Maga republican party. Okay, friends, that is just what is happening in North Carolina. People with aspirations. It speaks to this idea of the future, turning the page, thinking about where we want to, not just where we have been. It ties so deeply the core of this campaign while she has this credibility of the economy in a way that has to be making Donald Trump panic a little bit. National teamsters chose not to endorse Kamala Harris, but the michigan teamsters did decide to endorse the Vice President. Tell me how something like that plays in the state of michigan. Michigan is a union state. We are strong, in support of our unions and our unions are strong and in support of our democratic candidates, from the bottom to the top. Teamsters have been terrific allies and partners of this party. They were very clear, as i talked to them, about their support for the Vice President. Whatever the national did, i always felt that the state here in michigan would step up and support the Vice President. Their folks are ready to do the work that the other folks are not ready to do. Folks are knocking on doors, making phone calls, talking to fellow members and workers about the importance of this election, telling the story of who Donald Trump is, the lies he has told about what he would bring back to michigan, jobs he sent away from michigan. Of course, what Biden And Harris have done to bring jobs to michigan and support teamsters and other union members. We know in order to win this election, we need a strong coalition that includes each and every one of our members and all of our other partners around the state. They leaned in deep to make sure we get this done. You know, arizona is important for so many different reasons. I think people are sick and tired of the Races Rhetoric being perpetuated by the republicans and republican party in arizona and Donald Trump. People want to return to decency. They want good, union jobs, which the Bidenharris Administration has been at the forefront, protecting our union jobs, fighting for workers and union families. I think people, we are seeing this across the board when i travel around the state, people want someone who is a leader. They want somebody like You Harris and governor Tim Walz, and not, you know me a convicted felon in Donald Trump and j. D. Vance. There are so many places she can go where workers will say, i would not have my job if it werent for you fighting by american policies, standing up for dairy farms, ensuring that wisconsinites get fair shake. She is doing incredible work and we intend to get that seat. Our Battle Game is strong. We have got thousands of volunteers, hundreds of staff, 50 plus offices open. We run a full campaign from the bottom of the ticket to the top. We talk about all of our candidates. We even got a race we are focused on. We have two terrific women, what is the first black woman to be on our michigan supreme court, who we are going to reelect, and we will elect another member of the supreme court who is a democrat.
