[hyperventilating] Tony Young it almost seemed a little rehearsed. Mig windows i saw her mug shot. Here we have this young, talented actress. We didnt know the full story. Like, this is absolutely crazy. Shes not who she says she is. Did somebody put her up to this . I had that nagging in my mind. There was more going on here. [dramatic music] hello, and welcome to dateline. Shane moore was shot to death on a sunny summer afternoon. In that instant, a bitter Family Feud turned fatal. But was shanes killing a crime . To crack this case, investigators had to unravel what happened in the moments before the shot rang out. There was no question who fired the gun. Keith Morrison Voiceover so, yes, a Horror Movie. Matthew spickard and his daughter, trinity, live in the Siskiyou Mountains of southern oregon. Isolated, yes, but not very far from the town of ashland with its shakespearean festival, artists of all kinds. Trinity and her dad had evolved into a talented, even quirky little duo, performing as musicians one night, comedians the next, and Stage Actors whenever the chance came along. I was 14. I was going into the ninth grade. Keith Morrison Voiceover thats when trinity said to her dad, why dont we make a movie . Were kind of blissfully blind. Were just like, oh, well just do it. Itll be fine. Our main goal in sight was just to get a story and a script laid out. Keith Morrison Voiceover in these mountains, myths are as persistent as the rain. Here, some people swear to seeing bigfoot wandering through deep woods. And the undead might just be a story, or maybe not. So what movie did Dad And Daughter write . From the dark, they called it. It ends up being a movie about isolation. Its kind of a film about the Human Response to fear, i think. Yes. Keith Morrison Voiceover Trinitys Dad had been saving for a motorcycle. Instead, he hired a screenwriter, a director, musician, and then came casting. The lead character, valerie, was in nearly every scene. The success of the film would be riding on her shoulders. But by the final day of casting we were just kind of sitting in the audition room, and were like, man, we have not found our valerie yet. Valerie or damon. We were kind of freaking out. Action get back to work, you savages. Dammit, val. Keith Morrison Voiceover and then, she walked in. And they just blew it out of the water. Im valerie. I dont know if you remember my name. Keith Morrison Voiceover she was Wyn Reed. She was such a phenomenal actor. It was just insane. We absolutely adored her. Keith Morrison Voiceover Mig Windows read for the valerie part, too. Mig windows i remember, we got to this really dramatic scene, and i was trying very hard to, you know, every ounce of my Acting Training to try to get this scene right, and then, we could hear wyn rehearsing with her scene partner, and she had absolute panic in her voice. At first, we thought something had happened. We thought, oh, my god, like, is everything ok over there . Oh, my god. No, theyre just rehearsing the scene, and theyre much better than us. I dont wanna do that. Keith Morrison Voiceover mig was cast as the grumpy housekeeper. Thats her with the braided brown hair. But a star, clearly, was wyn. A few of us are staying at a cabin. Were gonna have some drinks. Itll be fun. Keith Morrison Voiceover shooting began at a rented chateau deep in the mountains. The plot . The stranded staff of a Mountain Lodge slowly realizes one of them is a killer. And when Wyn Reed was on the set, they sensed they were in the presence of greatness. She could easily pull out an emotion the entire film. She could turn it on like that. She would walk into the scene with tears already coming down. Lets do this. Lets go. Diane, i think its time for you to go to bed. Diane no. Keith Morrison Voiceover mig admired wyns acting too, but something bothered her. Strange as it sounds, she had a Feeling Wyn was diane Keith Morrison voiceover well, not wyn. She couldnt be sure. The hair was very different, and her face, maybe. Yet, when reminded me a great deal of an old High School classmate, woman named tucker. Tucker reed. I really had a strong inkling that that was her. She looked so much like her. Did she seem to recognize you . No. Keith Morrison Voiceover it was just so peculiar. Mig and this tucker had been in plays together in High School. And i remember thinking i could really see her being someone who will succeed professionally. Keith Morrison Voiceover the High School tucker, mig remembered, also had a very, well, present mother. Kelly was her name. Always around. Her mom would come to the theater to help her with her Hair And Makeup. Keith Morrison Voiceover but memories can be tricky. And now, years later, on the movie set, mig began to doubt hers. I was kind of 50 50 on it. You werent sure if it was the same person or not . I was not sure. Keith Morrison Voiceover until the day a woman, introduced as wyns relative, showed up on the set. And i saw that her relative had a bag full of Hair And Makeup stuff. Keith Morrison Voiceover mig recognized her instantly. The relative was kelly, Tuckers Mom. And it just, it took me right back to High School, seeing that. Keith Morrison Voiceover mig was now convinced her hunch was right. When really was tucker. But she decided not to tell anybody. And she didnt, until shooting wrapped and all were back in town. And she was like, let me tell you something about wyn. And shes like, well, shes on trial for for murder. Keith Morrison Voiceover was it possible their Movie Killer was a killer . A Murder Case in real life. Turns out the talented actress has a deadly secret. Coming up. How are you holding the gun at this point . It was only in one hand. Only after they wrapped the shoot did they find out that their leading lady, wyn, was really named tucker, and that, in real life, she had shot her own uncle to death. When i watch the movie now, like, i feel like someones messing with me, and its like, its a sick joke, in a way, like, that i dont get. You can use anything. Keith Morrison Voiceover hard to understand why tucker would audition for a role like that, or why she would kill a man. I was absolutely, absolutely sure he was gonna kill my mother. Keith Morrison Voiceover here is wyn, now, tucker, in another oncamera appearance. The date is july the 26th, 2016. Tucker is at the police station. She seemed like a, to me, just on first blush, meek, mannered young lady that seemed upset. Keith Morrison Voiceover Tony Young was one of two detectives who heard firsthand, just hours after it happened, Tuckers Account of how and why she killed Shane Moore, the brother of Tuckers Mom and sometimes makeup artist, kelly. It happened at tuckers Grandmothers House out in the country. It was told to us in a way that painted the picture of Shane Moore coming in, trying to come into the front door of the residence, and kelly fighting to keep him out because he was coming in to seriously assault or Kill Kelly and tucker. You know how like in Horror Movies, the hand goes around the door . Right. And he was, like, wedging himself so the Door Couldnt be closed again. How are how were you holding a gun at this point . It was only in one hand. I sort of remember just sort of having it in the air. Did you make a conscious decision to fire the gun . I dont think, no. I tell me about that. Because to fire a gun, ive always thought you had to cock a gun. This gun doesnt do that. It just fired. Keith Morrison Voiceover she didnt know how the gun worked, she said, and it happened so fast. And she did warn him, she said. Can you, in your best words and your best recollection, tell us best you can exactly what you said to him when you got up there. Just reenact it for us. As loud as you need to be. You know youre not supposed to be here. Get out of here. I have a gun. Leave. Youre violent. We all know youre violent. Get out of here. It was very loud. It wasnt there was no mistaking it. Do this to us anymore. Keith Morrison Voiceover that same day, Tuckers Mom, kelly, still visibly agitated, told the same story about this frightening attack. Im telling you that moments before my brother died, he was assaulting me with the door. He was screaming at me. He was trying to force his way into a house he had no right to be in. I didnt know what shane was gonna do. It was horrifying. Keith Morrison Voiceover how did this Mother And Daughter ever get caught up in a killing . These are two very accomplished women. Kelly was once an attorney. Left the field to coauthor with her husband a bestselling True Crime book, deadly medicine, which later was adapted into a made for tv movie. It appeared on nbc. And tucker . Well, along with her mom and sister, she coauthored two young adult novels, even narrated the audiobook versions. Tucker reed on Recording Amber House was an odd place at any hour. She was always sort of ahead of the curve on everything. Keith Morrison Voiceover tuckers dad, daniel reed. I wasnt surprised that she became a good writer, because it was during sort of the frantic period where kelly and i were trying to write something that would sell that she was brought up into. So stories were just like in the air for her. Keith Morrison Voiceover though perhaps the biggest story of Tuckers Childhood was the unraveling of her parents marriage. Our kids grew up in a very well, kind of like a War Zone psychologically and emotionally. It was a very tense atmosphere that they were brought up into. Keith Morrison Voiceover later, while attending usc, tucker accused a boyfriend of raping her, and when the university said it found no evidence a rape occurred, she held a press conference. I believe that the weaknesses could be pinpointed and fixed. Keith Morrison Voiceover after college, she moved back to oregon, developed her acting skills, and two years later, shot her uncle to save her mom. Did he ever threaten to kill you . Yes. Keith Morrison Voiceover to hear this welleducated, wellspoken young woman tell it, this was a clear case of selfdefense. After police left the interrogation room, she seemed to fall apart with remorse for what shed done. Tucker reed [crying] Keith Morrison voiceover and yet. I had that nagging in my mind that this was a lot more. It had a lot of different tendrils that there was more going on here. Keith Morrison Voiceover indeed, there was. Craig melvin Coming Up. Must have seemed very strange when you got up to the house. As soon as the door shut, it was strange. Craig melvin a simmering Family Feud, and a shellshocked witness in the middle. He was trying to come in, and he was trying to hurt me. Keith Morrison Voiceover it was a heroic tales. Lives were saved, they said. Plural. But as detective young asked his questions, it began to dawn on him that Something Else was at stake. Money. Lots of it. Which led to a whole other version of the story. Listen carefully. It may sound more like an episode of, say, Succession Or Game of thrones. Once upon a time, shane had been an attorney in san francisco, but drugs got the better of him. And in 2001, he moved on to the family ranch, where he took care of both the land and his elderly parents. My brothers helped my father with the property, taking care of it. Keith Morrison Voiceover Ryan And Ronda moore are shane and Kellys Brother and sisterinlaw. As my dad deteriorated, shane took care of him. As he got worse, he was wheelchair bound, and my brother would carry him from the chair to his bed or to the shower. There was plenty to do, and he did it. Cheerfully, willingly . Good guy, in other words. A good guy. I personally think he was the kindest, nicest person in our family, after my dad. Keith Morrison Voiceover shanes sister, kelly, meanwhile, got divorced, and the parents bought her a house in town about 30 miles away, where she could live with tucker and her two other children. The Parents Plan was, when they passed on, kelly would keep the house, and she and shane would split ownership of the ranch 50 50. But complications. Once my dad died, everything changed. Keith Morrison Voiceover problem was, as kelly admitted to the police, she needed money now. I dont have any money. I was looking to get food stamps. Im that broke. My mother is taking care of my family with her property wealth. Keith Morrison Voiceover Kellys Mother did that for her by mortgaging the ranch, which did more than put money in kellys pocket. It diminished the value of Shanes Portion of the inheritance. It was just money going out, constantly going out. So you were aware of declining value of that place . Yeah. Shane must have been aware of it, too. Yeah. Keith Morrison Voiceover they argued. Kelly filed Assault Charges and took out a temporary Restraining Order against shane, which decreed that when kelly was in their mothers home, shane had to stay out. Then kelly cooked up another plan to keep shane in line. I was Gonna Adulterate the will with additional language that said that if anything happened to my mother or my family, that he would be immediately disinherited. Keith Morrison Voiceover well, shane heard about that and came up with his own idea. He asked his mother to sign over the property now to both him and kelly, 50 50, by filing whats known as a Grant Deed. That would prevent kelly from taking everything for herself. Its also what touched off this whole bloody business. Had he explained on the phone, you know, that there was a feud going on between them, i might not have gone. Keith Morrison Voiceover this is Carla Tryber. On july 26, 2016, the day of the shooting, shane hired carla to notarize this Grant Deed. But when carla finally got to the remote ranch house, shane was nowhere to be found. It must have seemed very strange when you got up to the house. As soon as the door shut, it was strange. Keith Morrison Voiceover carla didnt know about the Restraining Order that kept shane from entering, was surprised when she was met instead by three intense women, tucker, her grandmother, lori, and Tuckers Mom, kelly, who seemed upset. She kept yelling. Shes like, what do you need . What do you need . What are you doing here . Keith Morrison Voiceover tucker was standing silently in a dark corner of the kitchen. And i saw her out of the corner of my eye, and i said, oh, excuse me. Hello. How are you . And she goes like this. Just puts her hand up. Never said a word. Keith Morrison Voiceover carla tried to proceed with the signing, but shanes Mom Couldnt find her id, though she was sure it had been sitting right there in front of her. So a friend of shanes went to find witnesses whod vouch for her identity. The entire time, from the time that door shut, everything was just off. Keith Morrison Voiceover while they sat at the Dining Table waiting for the friend to return, carla said she double checked with Shanes Mom to make sure she knew what a Grant Deed was. And she said yes, she understood all that. And i said, ok. And kelly goes, i thought this was a will. And im like, i dont know anything about a will. And she goes, are you sure this isnt a will . And i was like, its not a will. And she grabbed the paper out of my hand, she read it, and tore it up in pieces. Did she go on talking and yelling at that point . She was always yelling the whole time. She was very excited. Keith Morrison Voiceover up until now, carla had never laid eyes on the man who hired her, shane. Theyd communicated only by text. I looked up, and here comes somebody outside of the window, like, walking up from behind the house. And i said, oh, look, maybe thats him. And she said, yeah, thats my brother. Keith Morrison Voiceover then, she said, tucker, who had been all but invisible, suddenly appeared. Tucker came up, and there was a towel on the table, and she had reached underneath the towel, and when she brought it back this way, in my head, i went, oh, my god, thats a. 38. Tuckers mother, kelly, corroborated the story, telling police she feared shane was about to harm them. But a witness who saw the deadly encounter told a strikingly different tale. Keith Morrison Voiceover in this faraway mountain home, Notary Public Carla Tryber felt like she had just walked into a scene in a Horror Movie, a scene where Everybody Else knew the lines but her. Oh, and one of the actors had a gun, a real one, this time. And i dont really know what tucker is doing, because shes behind me. So with a gun. With a gun. Right. Keith Morrison Voiceover what happened next was so traumatic, carla had to be hospitalized afterwards and still suffers from ptsd. This is the first time she has publicly told her story. And we can see her demeanor as a defense mechanism. She is still terrified recalling the scene. Tucker with a gun, her mother yelling. And this guy, meanwhile, is Coming Up toward the house. Yes. He wasnt coming in. He was just like, Coming Up towards the patio. And so kelly went to the door and said, hey, whats going on . I thought we were signing a will. And hes like, what . Why would we sign a will . Keith Morrison Voiceover carla could hear the conversation, but from where she was sitting, she couldnt see shane. So then, all of a sudden, tucker said, mom, mom, look out, hes coming in. Hes coming in. I remember, like, looking over my shoulder, and i couldnt see him at all. So he wasnt coming toward the door as far as you could tell . I didnt really know what was going on. And then, she went over towards the door. Keith Morrison Voiceover she, tucker, with a gun. Carla didnt see what happened next, but i heard the gunshot, and i was like, what just happened . And then, i hear him yell, you shot me. And i was like, oh, my god. Oh, my god. I dont know what to do here. So i was scared to death. I can only imagine. So after that, tucker went to her room. And i remember thinking there was a phone on the table, so i grabbed that phone and i kept trying to dial 911. And i put it up to my ear, im like, this thing wont work. And kelly comes around in front of me, and i said, oh, my god, you need to help me call 911, and she goes, no. And the phone dropped on the floor. And i looked at her and i said, you better go in the bedroom and get the gun from tucker, because i didnt know if tucker was gonna come out and shoot us, if she was gonna shoot herself. I didnt know what was really going on. But the intensity, intensity was totally ramped up this whole time. Oh, yeah. The amount of adrenaline in the air. For everyone, i think. I mean, i know i was going crazy. And kelly comes back out with the gun down to her side, and im trying to like, hold it together. And im like, kelly, just give me the gun and give it to me by the grips. And she goes, no. And im like, what . I go, kelly, look it, im really shaking. I just need you to hand me the gun by the grips. I just want the gun. And she leaned down and got in my face and said, i said no. And i was like, ok. I dont know what to do. So i was holding that phone in the kitchen, and i told you i was trying to dial 911. It didnt work, it didnt work, and it starts ringing, and i just push the button. And i said, hello . And she kept saying to me, get the phone to someone near the victim. And that gave me the idea of how i was getting out of there. So i grabbed all my stuff, and i had the phone in my hand, and i said, here, grandma, talk to 911. I have to go. Keith Morrison Voiceover when she stepped outside, carla Saw Shane lying half way off the porch. And i kept thinking, how in the heck did that Bullet Push him from the front door clear over to the ground . I mean, it was like 4 feet, 5 feet, something like that, it seemed like, you away from the door. He was nowhere near the front door when he was shot. No. Put me in your shoes or in your brain when youre walking from the house to your car 100 feet away and she still had the gun. Shes got the gun, and i remember looking at her, and i thought, whatever. If youre gonna shoot me, do it. I stepped over his body, which was the hardest thing to do, but there wasnt any other place to go. So i had to step over his body and go to my car, and i remember, i thought, just dont turn around. Dont turn around. Just get in your car and leave. And then i got in my car. I didnt know what to do. I feel like i was probably in shock. Keith Morrison Voiceover her memory was still vivid of seeing Shanes Body on the outside edge of the porch. He hadnt been in the house at all. Which is not the Story Tucker told the police. So my mom is against the door and trying to push the door, and i could see shane and he was trying to get in. Im telling you that moments before my brother died, he was assaulting me with the door. Keith Morrison Voiceover the discrepancies helped convince the Da To Charge Tucker with manslaughter, but it might not be easy to convince a jury. Tucker could be very persuasive. Her own lawyer gave it to the prosecutors as evidence. How did you learn about the Video Surfacing . And when did it happen . That was two years later. And i received a call from the Case Agent and he said, youre not gonna believe this. Youve gotta come to the sheriffs department. When he pushes a button on his computer, my jaw hit the floor. Keith Morrison Tucker had recorded the entire deadly incident on her Cell Phone. Theres kelly and the grandmother and the notary, and Shanes Friend, carlton ollison, looking for the grandmothers drivers license. This is my usaa card. Kelly moore she shot him. Carla tryber oh, god. Oh, god. Oh, tucker. Keith Morrison Voiceover with the phone still recording, you can hear kelly ask tucker for the gun. Keith Morrison Voiceover then, told shane is still alive, barely, tucker reacts with an obscenity. Keith Morrison Voiceover when detective young saw the video, he knew right away. This was a very different set of circumstances than we were told during the initial interview with tucker. Keith Morrison Voiceover during his investigation, young discovered that just two hours before he was killed, shane called the Sheriffs Office saying he feared for his safety. Keith Morrison Voiceover remember, tucker told the police she didnt know how the gun worked, said she was surprised when it went off. Turned out, shed already fired it that very day. Keith Morrison Voiceover when detective young asked tucker about that hours after she shot shane, she seemed caught off guard. Your uncle called reporting that you fired a gun on the property today. Well at that prior to that time. Well, thats bizarre. What was going on in your mind to make you want to test fire that Gun Today . To make sure it worked . I dont i dont know. Keith Morrison Voiceover tucker said after she test fired the gun, her mom put it right on the kitchen table, but hid it under a napkin. She was like, lets put it in a central place. Ok. Just, you know, so its there. Keith Morrison Voiceover they were afraid, she said, of what shane might do to them. Today, he told my mother that if she [bleep] things up for him, he would is that something you saw or your mother told you . She told me. Keith Morrison Voiceover so tucker never actually heard jane threaten them. It was what her mother said shed heard. So this question about something Shanes Friend carlton said he overheard after the killing. Carlton said that he heard heard you say something like, you told me to do it. Do you remember saying something to the effect of you told me i could do it. You told watch the you told me to do it, or you told me i could do it, or something. Actor Tucker Reed was cast as a killer in a movie while charged with manslaughter in real life. Tucker claims she shot her uncle, Shane Moore, in selfdefense, but a video of the deadly encounter turned the case on its head, leading prosecutors to upgrade the charge to murder. Now, tucker was headed to court, where her knack for drama would take center stage. Heres Keith Morrison with the conclusion of killer role. Keith Morrison Voiceover no movie roles this time. Tucker reed was held without bail, charged with murdering her uncle, shane. In january, 2019, tucker asked for a hearing to see if the judge would grant bail, a chance to get out of jail while she awaited trial. The hearing played out like a trial, complete with evidence and witnesses. Tuckers own video of the shooting was played, of course. This call was important, though, for another reason, too. It meant the revolver had been fired twice that day. But detectives, when they examined the gun, found it contained only one empty shell casing, meaning the gun had been reloaded after Tucker Test fired it. But who would have done that . Do you solemnly swear and affirm Keith Morrison voiceover Tuckers Mom testified under oath it certainly wasnt her. Attorney and after the gun was test fired, did you reload it . I did not reload it. Keith Morrison Voiceover so was she pointing the finger at her own daughter . Tuckers mom also testified shed had a runin with shane earlier that day. He was mostly saying, this is my property. You better not [bleep] up my deal with mother, kelly. You better not [bleep] up my deal with mother. I was afraid. I was more afraid than ive ever been. And i wanted tucker to come outside with the gun. I wanted to have the gun. I was that afraid. And tucker came out, and she gave me the gun, and then she took it back from me because she could see that i was panicked, and she also knows that im half blind. Keith Morrison Voiceover tuckers own mother had now placed the gun in tuckers hands twice that day. The third time, of course, was when tucker shot shane. And now, it was time for the judge to rule. If bail was granted, tucker would be free to pursue her acting career. If denied, shed have to remain in jail for at least another year awaiting trial. I do think the state has established enough evidence that gets them to the standard necessary to not grant bail. Keith Morrison Voiceover no bail. No release. As the judge went on to explain her ruling, tucker began to sob and hyperventilate. Judge miss reed, if you dont behave, im gonna just have to remove you from the courtroom. So if you do i cant. I was there to be supportive, because i at first, there was No Doubt in my mind from the story that we got that i could support someone defending themselves and their mother and their family. Because how terrifying of a situation it could be. Yeah. And then, to not to see contradicting evidence, it just i was taken aback. What was it like to hear your Star Actress screaming in the hallway as the hearing went on . You Cant Help but to think, is that just another act as well, you know . It wasnt going her way, so lets try to make it another act. Lets try to shift it. Keith Morrison Voiceover detective Tony Young, whose job it was to monitor Tuckers Prison calls, Said Tucker was not at all happy about her mothers testimony on the stand. I learned a lot from listening to those. It was pretty obvious to me that tucker was not the weak, Wilting Flower in the whole thing, and the dynamic between she and kelly, certainly is the stronger personality. No doubt about it. Keith Morrison Tucker is. Tucker is. Tucker. Tucker is definitely a lot stronger than she was portraying in court. They loved him, but they also knew he was a cranky, reclusive Drug User who might be portrayed at Tuckers Murder Trial as someone less than. My brother is not the most sympathetic victim. Keith Morrison Voiceover which may be why, in may, 2020, the Da Allowed Tucker to plead guilty, not to murder, but to second degree manslaughter. The da said she had no way of predicting whether a jury would believe tucker was play acting or truly afraid. Why do you think they let her plead out to manslaughter . And not only manslaughter, manslaughter two, for heavens sake. Im just gonna assume that the District Attorney just wanted to get it done and out of the way. I guess, if youre a District Attorney, and you want to try a young, attractive young woman for murder, and she also happens to be quite an accomplished actress and you put her on the stand, were you concerned about that . Yes. They were concerned about it. I was concerned about it. Keith Morrison Voiceover under the terms of her deal, tucker was sentenced to six years, three months in prison, the minimum under oregon law. She could be out after serving 5 and 1 2 years. Tuckers dad said hell be waiting for her. Without taking anything away from my other two children, tucker was my first born, and shes always been a brave, curious, loving person to me.
