Now on the last word with lawrence o'donnell. Good evening, we will get to andrew weissmann and other news, but we will begin with the hurricane. As you just heard from alex wagner, there are 600,000 people are ready without power. We will go straight to nbc news meteorologist bill karins at this hour for the latest on exactly what the track of the storm is. What do you see coming? we are in the impact his own. We are now watching the northern eye move onshore and it is like the equivalent of a tornado that is 40 miles wide that is now moving into florida and it will knock down everything in its path if it is not made of concrete or brick. You can see where the storm is. It has intensified all afternoon and all evening long. It is a solid category 4, almost to the higher end of category 4. The hurricane hunters said it is still intensifying right up until landfall. This is the coast and where the really destructive winds are and now they are starting to close in on populated areas. This blue box is what we call an extreme wind warning. They are only issued when we have hurricanes with powerful eyes making landfall. They are telling everyone from tallahassee up to madison along i10, get your storm shelters or interior rooms, closets, bathrooms. Use blankets, pillows. Try to get as many walls between yourself and the storm because that is how it will feel. This will be a devastating wind event over the next couple of hours and on top of everything the storm surge is really coming up. We have historic flooding even in tampa. This is the highest we have seen the storm surge in tampa. There will be a lot of destruction when we wake up in the morning. Bill karins, we will check in with you during the hour for any new developments on the hurricane coverage. Thank you very much for starting us off. Today, ukraine's president zelenskyy had two meetings at the white house. The first with the president and then the second with the vice president. In the first meeting president biden said this. I see two key pieces. First i now we have to strengthen ukraine's position on the battlefield and that is why today i am proud to announce a new, $2. 4 billion package of security assistance. I have also directed the pentagon to allocate all remaining security assistance funding that has been appropriated to ukraine, period, by the end of my term, which is january 20. This will strengthen ukraine's position in future negotiations. Second, we look ahead to help ukraine succeed in the long term. As you know better than anyone, we said that the washington summit, we have to support ukraine and its path to membership for both the eu and nato and continue to make reforms to counter corruption case which you are working on right now. We have to ensure ukraine has sufficient capabilities. I mean sufficient capabilities to defend against future russian aggression. So i am proud of the steps you have taken on these fronts. Russia will not prevail in war. Ukraine will prevail and we will continue to stand by you every step of the way. Thank you for being here and the floor is yours. Before her meeting with president zelenskyy, vice president harris said this. I've been proud to work alongside president biden and the 50 nation coalition we have built up to allow ukraine to defend itself. Thanks to this coalition and the skill and the bravery of the ukrainian people, along with your courageous leadership, president zelenskyy, ukraine has stood up to russia's aggression and today kyiv stands free and strong. President zelenskyy, i am clear. Putin started this war and he could end it tomorrow. If he simply withdrew his troops from ukraine's sovereign territory. I share with you, mister president, there are some in my country who would instead force ukraine to give up large parts of its sovereign territory. Who would demand that ukraine accept neutrality. And would require ukraine to forgo security relationships with other nations. These proposals are the same of those of putin and let us be clear. They are not proposals for peace. Instead they are proposals for surrender. Which is dangerous and unacceptable. President zelenskyy has also been meeting with some republicans in washington who remain supportive of ukraine. It is crucial for us to be fully understandable and work in full coordination with the united states and this morning i talked also to the congressman, both chambers, both parties, and i am thankful for their bipartisan support. We believe this war could be won and just peace can be only with the united states. Madame vice president, this is you said seventh seventh. We have to keep pressure on russia to stop the war and make truly lasting and just peace. It is a top priority for us and for other freedom loving nations to achieve real, real peace for us. So we need to keep sanctions against russia strong and policies for immobilized russian assets to protect ukraine. Our people, our cities, our front line from russian evil and of course we must work hard to bring all russian war criminals to justice. President zelenskyy scheduled to meet with donald trump tomorrow. Today, donald trump said this. I believe i will be able to make a deal between president putin and president zelenskyy. Quite quickly. Reporter: what does that look like? i don't want to tell you what that looks like. Okay, two things. Imagine the news media reaction in america if kamala harris ever said i don't want to tell you what it looks like in response to any question about any of her plans. Think about that. And second, of course, what it looks like is exactly what the vice president just described as donald trump's position, which is a proposal for surrender. That is the trump plan for ukraine if he makes it back in the white house. Everything donald trump has said about ukraine indicates that he believes the solution is for ukraine to simply surrender to vladimir putin. Today the white house office of gun violence prevention, which is led by vice president harris, proposed executive orders signed by the president today that combat emerging firearms threats like 3d printed guns and machine gun conversion devices and improved schoolbased active shooter drills. Last year after another school shooting, my predecessor said like so many members of congress, just get over it. I'm going to be very blunt. Senator vance of ohio has called these shootings facts of life. Who do these people think they are? i mean it. Over the years i have held the hands of far too many mothers and fathers to try to comfort them after their child was killed by gun violence and let us all agree, it does not have to be this way. We know. We have in our possession, we know how to stop these tragedies and it is a false choice to suggest you are either in favor of the second amendment or you want to take everyone's guns away. I am in favor of the second amendment and i believe we need to reinstate the assault weapons ban. And pass universal background checks, safe storage laws and red flag laws. If vice president harris becomes the first woman president, history will be made in more ways than one, including by her husband, doug emhoff, who will become the white house's first first gentleman. Our next guest, jen psaki, just interview the current second gentleman, doug emhoff. You have also been front and center in the fight against antisemitism and i imagine, your faith has long been important to you. You have talked about it quite publicly and if the vice president was elected you would be the first jewishamerican to be a first partner, first gentleman, whatever you may call yourself. How does the history of that way on you in the moment? well i took and i take being the first jewish white house principal ever, i take it very seriously. I am accountable for it and if you recall even before october 7, really at kamala's urging, we really leaned into this fight on behalf of the biden harris administration and we put forward the firstever national strategy released in may, 2023. So we had that out there and then when the horrific day of october 7 happened, the administration was ready to take action. It is something i have been working on, speaking about, meeting with released hostages, hostage families. It is intense and a lot of times i don't want to do it. It is too raw, it is too emotional for me and she is the one that keeps pushing me out there because of the responsibility that i have in this role and because she cares about these issues. She is out there fighting these issues just like i am. So when we win and the first jewish first gentleman, i will continue to speak out very loudly and also what really bothered me a week or so ago was when trump got up at an event, an event purporting to fight antisemitism and he said vile antisemitic things. Long tropes that are just terrible. We have to speak out every single time when something like that happens. So i'm going to continue not to be afraid, not to be intimidated. Not to live in fear, but to live openly and proudly as a jewish person. When you hear him say things like that, and he said that if he doesn't win it will be essentially the fault of jewish americans. One of the oldest tropes. An old trope. I know you put a statement out on x at the time. Do you worry he is putting a target on the backs of jewish americans? he is. Take him at his word. He lies about a lot of things, but you have two take him at his word on things like this. This is a disgusting trope. The socalled dual loyalties. It is an outrage and it is not just jewish people who should be outraged. I spoke recently at the groundbreaking for the memorial at the tree of life in pittsburgh and there i said essentially that antisemitism and hate, it is a poison running through the veins of our democracy. So all of us, whether you are jewish or not, need to fight back on this. This hate affects all of us, so we all need to come together as a community coalition, to come together and fight this together. Do you think he's anti semitic when he says things like that? you look at him and see the repetition of this type of words and language as anti semitic? of course it is and i said that publicly. Definitely. I want to also ask about mark robinson because we are sitting in north carolina. You spoke about him at this event. He also reportedly recommended hitler as a good read. He is still the nominee for the gubernatorial race. Josh stein is obviously a good candidate. What you make of that is you look at the state of the republican party? it is pure cowardice. It is shameful. We need a strong republican party. We need people like liz cheney and adam kinzinger who come out and endorse kamala harris. You may not agree on every single idea and policy, but you agree on who we are as americans. You agree on our constitution and who leaders should be. When you have someone who made comments like mark robinson, he is clearly unfit, unhinged, and should not be running. The fact that donald trump was right here in wilmington, right where i am sitting, where he could not disavow mark robinson. He was trying to ignore it, but he did not disavow what robinson said. It is shameful. It is just shameful. Donald trump is the guy who said this guy is a start. He said that he is martin luther king jr. On steroids. He has not disavowed any of that, so donald trump is supporting mark robinson. Those are the types of candidates he is supporting. It shows you yet another of the many, many examples of why donald trump is unfit for any job, let alone president of the united states. Joining us now, jen psaki, former white house press secretary and host of inside with jen psaki on this network. I just want to show you the latest from donald trump about mark robinson after what we were just listening to. He was asked are you going to pull your endorsement of mark robinson. Let's look at this. Reporter: are you going to pull your endorsement for mark robinson? i don't know the situation. So that is what donald trump looks like when he is lying and walking away from a reporter. I don't know the situation. Of course he knows the situation. He knows it involves a book donald trump himself is reported to be an admirer of. What you make of where this is in north carolina for mark robinson and donald trump? well, as doug emhoff said in the interview i did with him yesterday, it is cowardice and as you said, of course donald trump knows what mark robinson has set online. What he has said publicly. We all know what his views are and instead of speaking to that, it is not only him by the way, as you know. It is also so many leaders in the republican party who claim to be people who speak out against antisemitism. Who claim to be people who are defenders of a quality in the country and when they are asked, they are silent on this. That is complacency. It is worse than complacency, it is cowardice. It tells you quite a bit and i think what is behind all of that in my view is that donald trump handpicked this guy. Still supports him. Has supported him. They are afraid. There is cowardice of trump, too. They are afraid of standing up and calling out this guy who is clearly an antisemitic candidate and a candidate who is making outrageous statements about martin luther king. About being a black nazi. That should be easy to condemn and some reason it is hard and we know why, they are scared of donald trump. I'm fascinated of what i've seen with your interview with doug emhoff. I will eagerly watch the rest of it on sunday when you present it because i have never seen him speak this way. I had personal chats with him when we find ourselves at the same coffee joint in l. A. which happens from time to time. I know, you've talked about that. And i have at different times been passing through rooms and halls where he is and it is just kind of a hello, very brief thing. I never asked in those social settings anything serious about government, his life and government or anything about it. Here he is talking to you in a way that i have not heard. What did you learn about him in this conversation? one of the things that struck me and you talked about this, too. Before doug emhoff fell in love with this fierce attorney general who loves to kick, to cook, he was a successful entertainment lawyer. He was somebody who's jewish faith was deeply important to him. Someone who had his own life before her and i think what i learned about him is how deeply he feels.
