With 36 days until the election day, the president ial campaigns are shifting their focus to the aftermath of hurricane helene. At least 125 people are dead acrostic states, and the search is on for hundreds who remained missing. The highest Death Toll is in the state of North Carolina where entire communities are still underwater. Fema is on the ground in North Carolina along with 10 federal Search And Rescue teams and 200 federal ambulances. Around 1. 6 million people down there are still without power. But the number is steadily coming down. Today Vice President harris cancel campaign stops in Las Vegas to fly back to d. C. For a Fema Briefing and the White House has announced President Biden will visit North Carolina wednesday. Today, Donald Trump was in parts of georgia that were hit by the storm and while he was there, he got in front of crowds and spread lies about how the federal government is responding. He falsely claims that Governor Kemp had not been able to get a hold of President Biden for help, even though Governor Kemp told reporters last night that he had in fact spoken to the president. And you know, he is looking to divide, i mean one thing that was consistent in Trumps Presidency that we are seeing in his response right now is truly a view that there is Blue America and Red America and he conceived himself to be a president for Red America and now he is a candidate for Red America and i thought it was revealing that his accusation of the North Carolina governor would be well youre only serving your own areas because i think that is how he categorizes the world, and i thought it was very revealing that he is seeking to plant this doubt, you know i just think of Donald Trump, disaster released relief president. Rico, throwing the paper towels. Its not exactly his strong suit, organizing a government response. These seeds that he is planting are lies and my question is, will they take root and grow. Officials are already saying that the storm could affect voting, and think about the mail disruptions, destroyed Polling Places and people who have lost their belongings, no ids, voting might be the last thing on their mind. How big of a problem could this be in North Carolina . I think we are just now beginning to learn what a big problem this could be but it absolutely is a problem and you are right to mention that, i mean, we are just a few weeks now away from the election. Its just the beginning of october, the election is November 5th and the disaster, the tragedy, that these people in the states have faced, and the infrastructure loss, it means that not only are they dealing with returning and repairing their lives but basic things like going to the Voting Booth and or receiving ballots in the mail and putting them in the mail, thats up for grabs, so that is absolutely something that is on the radar now. And could end up really having an impact in the election. I would just add as well to some of the clips that you are playing earlier, i was in the Pool Today at the White House, i was in the Oval Office when President Biden was asked about former President Trumps comments, and the anger that he displayed is pretty real, i think it is frustrating to him, to have to at the same time that hes trying to navigate this major disaster for the states, also having to deal with these misstatements from trump, his former opponent and his predecessor. Of course what with the federal response be if Donald Trump got his which wish when he wanted the federal government to shut down. Imagine if our government were shut down in a disaster like this. You know, i will be interested to see whether trump can resist demanding another shot at the Debate Stage, you know, his ego would seem to demand it. You know, he has really operated under the principle in politics that if theres a spotlight, you should run to it. Not just in politics, but his entire life, Tomorrow Night will be the debate between Vice President aspirants tim Walz And Jd vance. I dont know that trump is capable of staying out of the spotlight of one that is offered like that. We will see his rhetoric, as you pointed out, it is really escalatory. I think the next 36 days, its going to go up and up and up and up. If the palpable threat of violence that trump tends to wield, the closer to the election. I mean, that is the through line for me, is the idea that violence will cleanse our society. When Donald Trump himself is calling his remarks dark, you know that we are in a pretty scary place. All right lets stay dark because trump and his fellow republicans have these new talking points. 13,000 migrant murderers, who they say are currently at large, who are let into the country by the biden harris administration. For fax sake, lets Tell The Truth. The people on this list are not at large, they are just not in ice custody. Many are in federal or state prisons and most of them did not enter the country during the biden administration, they entered the country in the past 40, not four, 40 years, including the trump administration. So immigration is a problem. It is a vulnerability for democrats. Many americans on both sides of the aisle are unhappy. So why doesnt Donald Trump just Tell The Truth and make a good case . Well i dont think he can really help himself, honestly. Im with susan on this one. I think he ties the idea of violence towards electoral benefit. I mean its kind of shocking, honestly, to step back and he went on stage and literally called for a national day of violence. I mean thats what he did. He called for a national day of violence and that was the tip of the iceberg. The stuff about the immigration was to borrow a word far darker, he talked about migrants coming into your kitchen and slitting your throat. I mean the imagery is just Beyond The Pale and i was thinking back to his runs for 2016 and 2020. Nativism, antiimmigration rhetoric has been the through line throughout his rush of politics but i would have to say that this run is the most scenic phobic, run for the presidency in modern american history. And i think journalistic way, we owe it to the public to call it out for what it is, and precisely that, this historically the phobic campaign and i dont think he has the ability to temper it. He thinks this is a winning issue. I cant believe im saying this but even if you wanted to put Xenophobia Or Humanity aside, and i realize that is absurd. Jeff, immigration doesnt have to be a weak point for democrats. Our economy grows through legal immigration and Donald Trumps solve is to build a Wall And Mass deportation. What we need, the answer we need is inefficient processing system, why dont democrats just lead with that . Well, youre asking in a broader sense, why dont people just vote on policies and in this case, why doesnt the democratic party come up with a different policy. I cant answer the latter question, the first question is a longer answer, too, policy has played a role in this Campaign But Policy issue of immigration has been a vulnerability for democrats, for Vice President harris, for President Biden when he was the candidate. She tried to address that a little bit by visiting the border this week, by suggesting a stronger border policy, they are certainly benefiting from the Executive Order that President Biden put out, which is impacting a number of people coming across the border. But back to your initial question, do voters look at these policies and do they judge the candidates based on their policies or do they remember insults and mistruths and i think the broad answer to that question is, its a little bit of all of the above and i think thats one reason why the former president uses the tactics that he does because they do help him. And its one reason that Vice President harris is using a different kind of tactic or strategy, and it is to come out with some of these policies and to talk about them and see if they resonate but at The End of the day, they have to resonate with somebody as they go to the ballot box, and whether or not people do that, that is the question. Donald trump accurately identifies vulnerabilities or issues that the american people care about but he has yet to offer a coherent policy that solves any of these things. We did get a new policy alert, i guess you could say, today in a new interview, Vp Harris said she supports legalizing weed, it is the first time we have heard her say this, as the democratic president ial nominee, and i think its the first time any major president ial candidate has said this. Susan, what did you think about this . I think we are in the phase of the election that its so close that both candidates are handing out essentially you know, dazzling little trinkets for subgroups of voters whether its marijuana or Donald Trump with the no taxes on tips, its easy to make promises like this and then you might go back and say well, you know, i would like to put this into effect but unfortunately the congress is divided and i cant get it through. I think that these guys are in an election thats so close, we may see a lot of promises in the next few weeks. It also reflects i think a demographic and a cultural shift in the country, as different states have experimented in localities, with liberalizing their marijuana laws, its less radical of a Step Step for a national candidate. In the airport, think it was ohare airport, they have these big Marijuana Amnesty boxes now because people are flying all over the country and theres a patchwork of different state laws, so i think on some level this is how that advocates are nationalizing this, how they wanted it to go. According to a telemundo survey, Kamala Harris leaves trump among Latino Voters but its the narrowest margin for a democratic candidate in years. Look at this, in 2020, Joe Biden, this is from the exit polls, beat trump by 33 points, that was an improvement but now look at it for years later, look at that 14, where it fits in with the recent elections. Much tighter than we are used to seeing. This is a group, fastgrowing, about one in six voters will be latino in this election. We see a gender gap, we talk about this all the time. This race is tied among men, women, harris with the 26 point advantage. We see an age gap, under 50, this race is almost dead even, harris by just three points over trump, over 50, thats where harris, thats where the heart of her support is. What does the Survey Show you when it comes to what is motivating Latino Voters. The economy, harris leads in so many different aspects, she leaves on character, she leaves on who would be best to address the latino community, she leaves on the abortion issue, every other, the two most important are the cost of living and the economy, trump leaves on those. 4 on economy and 9 on inflation. Frankly, the Latino Voter looks more like the average voter when it comes to securing the border. To those voters realize that his number 1 plan Mass Deportation would blow up the economy . I dont know that, i dont think they do and in fact its really hard to look at the Trump Plan and see something that would reduce inflation. Think about his Tariff Plan and think about that deportation of many workers, that would almost certainly raise wages and cause a huge Inflation Spiral in the country. Donald trump has a 13 Point Lead over paris when it comes to securing the border. Mass deportation crushes the economy. His other plan is we need money for security to build the wall. The wall doesnt help the country. What we need is an efficient processing system, because if you want the economy to grow, then we have to actually not have the labor shortage, fill these jobs and once the jobs are filled, those people will be contributing to the economy, to democrats need to make this more clear because it stunning that Donald Trump to pull so well on the economy that hes offering no inflation solid for and the border that the wall doesnt solve the problem. This goes back to the caravan for migrants. They disappear the day after the midterms. When i think about this, Kamala Harris has made some distinctions between the policies of Joe Biden and what she plans. They will have more aggressive asylum policies, but i think about you know, the main point here is security, i think what you just said, she is going to have tougher regulation in that regard, at least thats what she is signaling, and the thing about immigration and how it relates to the economy, we have this massive demographic issue. We are doing better than other developed countries when you think about germany and china. Nobody thinks about germany when they are renting an apartment. No doubt. What you just read, all of the issues where trump is beating her on the Economy And Inflation and the like, thats across every voting block. When i think about the fact that latinos, think about where they are, and a lot of very reliable democratic states, so i dont think its that important. They are the fastest group when it comes to entrepreneurship, so this idea that trump just throws out there, im going to all regulation, its enticing for them, and Vp Harris and democrats can talk about that. I think thats really important. I will point out, Vice President harris is the first candidate to talk about Small Business. Think about the number of people who work at Small Businesses, either who rely on it, who shop there, and you say okay, Hillary Clinton almost never used the word entrepreneurship, never talked about the free market. The democrats have felt like they have had trouble saying those words and the fact that harris is saying it, its a good thing. But Small Business owners also panic when they hear about the Care Economy, and heres why, because we want to be a more inclusive economy want to give people jobs with dignity and we want to pay people more and offer them benefits, offer them unemployment but when we do that, the Care Economy costs money. So we have to make choices as a country, so should Kamala Harris say in order to be this more inclusive economy where the Small Businesses will thrive and Individuals Cant support themselves guess what, we are not going to have Five Dollar meals at Residence Restaurant and your Pizza Isnt going to cost 18, its going to cost 28. The data shows that we have a great economy. But if we explained to the american people, the tradeoff, maybe that is where they need to solve for the issue. If you look at what republicans are offering, theres no safety net. When i think about what fed Share Powell just did, they want to support employment, so today when you think about what he just said, they will be very measured about how they lower Interest Rates, if they start to see a fall off in employment, and steve this is something you track, then they will go out and they will lower Interest Rates again and theyve done a nice job of threading the needle as it relates to tamping down inflation. Think about this, unemployment at 4. 3 is the lowest levels. Its at a 40 year low, so theres a lot of things going on in the economy that are good. And i think the administration, when they talk about capitalism for the middle class, this is something that you dont You Republicans talk about, they dont put the Word Capitalism into many things. When i think about how she taps towards the center, she is coming with a lot of policies that trump some people are finding that attractive. Prices were lower with trumpet they are not coming down if Donald Trump is the president again, and doesnt that argument no, it is right, prices are not going to come down and i dont think theres any Fixer Explanation about inflation. I think all there is, is time. People argue it is greed inflation. Ive talked to many people about this issue. You cant bring a policy of prices going down because if your prices go down the income goes down. The only cure is having a job and getting a raise and potentially running a tight labor market. I dont think there is an explanation to the american public. People are angry about this and they say who is at fault and they say the biden harris team, for better or worse, if you think about it, what they did is they spent a lot of money in the middle of the pandemic and they did it for a good reason, you could say. We were looking at unEmployment Rates that might have equaled the great depression. We avoided that, and had decent economic growth and we paid a price. Can we paid a price with the russian invasion. But by every measure we have a strong economy but in less than one hour we could potentially have a major port strike. This could derail some of the progress that we could see. Could this be the October Surprise . I dont think itll be right away but over time it would be bad. But these are related issues that we are talking about. Theres catch up to be had in workers wages and i look back, the union has not had a raise since 2018. They would like a 77 raise, the company is offering 50 . So theres going to be some meeting in the middle. How quickly, we dont know. Its costly over time and reigniting or rekindling some of the economy. At that with the tariffs, and the one thing about the biden administration, theyve been a friend of labor, so the idea that they could try and fix this sometime soon, you use the term October Surprise, it could be a real headwind to some of the progress i think that the administration has made toward the industry. Any think about manufacturing, thats the one other area where these tariffs are not good for, when you think about the issues of listen, if we have a strike, theyre going to lay people off and you will see the Employment Rate go higher, but that may cause further rate cuts. Look, the democrats just havent been trying to try, they havent been doing politics for this demographic. Theres this thought that weve got the young boat. And thats not true. You look at that harvard pole, theres a massive gender gap, they are doing well with young women, they are winning young men but narrowly and compared to the cohort, and you just dont have an effort to go out and talk with them, Mark Cuban went on the ovonic podcast, its just this broke pot coast podcast, they are like brose, they are irreverent cuban went on and i thought he was great. I talked to him about it. Made the case for Kamala Harris. Tim walz should look at that. It would certainly help. I do think the democrats arent talking but i will refrain this, i think the outcome is the same, there are a lot of young voters that dont feel connected to what they are saying but i dont know if its because of them so much or because just a global trend that you have a lot of young people that just dont trust institutions anymore. So if i am Kamala Harris or im Tim Walz and im thinking got to trust us because we are going to bring this country back, there was a time when i used to think that even though the institutions were flawed, as long as there was the right person leading them, things could be better. I think a lot of young people just dont believe that anymore, that the institutions themselves need to be scratched so how can you come from the institution, so they are not buying that. Dont you think its crazy, Donald Trump still wins their favor because they dont view him as a politician. But thats right, they view him and many ways as someone whos willing to tear it down and start over. The challenge is getting them to think about the other stuff that he has done and the problems with hearing it all down but i would also say theres always a backlash, theres a great research that suggests that successive generations tend to get more liberal than their parents, and we are doing right now with a generation that generally is not going to do that. Tim walz should just disqualify Jd Vance, that might be more useful. Because Jd Vance is a phony. He doesnt care about them, either. Hes not a bro, he doesnt seem like he is comfortable in his own skin. When he was asked what you do for fun, he said thats another gotcha question. Jd vance is not a guy that you have a beer with, so maybe just creating a contrast where Tim Walz is showing a personality and pointing out how weird Jd Vance is, that is the way. Just this idea of just beat him but beat him on policy. Where the were talking about trump or vance, they are not talking policy, Jd Vance, the whole rap is lets bring back the strongman. Expose him to be not a strongman which hes not and then discuss policy, how we are going to make your life better, could that be the solve . Do some version of what Kamala Harris did to trump in the debate. Like yeah, whatever, lets talk about whats really happening out there. All of the Childcare Work that hes done, hes really been good at that. And really practical. And can speak it plainly. So your point, if he goes out and says look, tim, i dont know , america, lets have this conversation in turn to people and have a direct conversation with the voter. If tomorrow does not go well for Jd Vance, do you think trump will change his mind on a second debate . I keep thinking that hes going to change his mind just because his manhood demands it. He couldnt even look at Kamala Harris in the first debate, she crushed him and now hes going to be scared of doing it again. I think the only reason that he is maintaining this posture is because hes in such a cloistered circle that maybe he has deluded himself into thinking that he won. But im like the only person who thinks that hes going to debate. I think its his ego. I mean hes just going to run home like a little toddler after she wiped the floor with him . Hes not going to stand up to her again . I hope he is watching. I want to talk about something else. I want to talk about democratic Senator Tester in montana. The outcome of this race could decide control of the senate. The amount of money pouring into this race is nothing short of a gazillion dollar, youve got the heaviest of Wall Street heavyweights pouring money into his republican rivals campaign. I want to talk about this because people are saying, Wall Street is x or y, isnt the reason they are dumping the money is because if you are really a rich and powerful person, you love the Status Quo and you left the gridlock. They want to keep things exactly as they are, broken like this, so there isnt progress or change, why would they want change, they love the present. If you have Kamala Harris as president and you have 51 republican senators, she cant do any of the things that you are worried about, shes not going to tax your unrealized gains. Which shes not going to do. By the way, if you are a democrat big money person, theres diminishing returns on that. Im disappointed that the democrats havent put more money into colin allred. Hes only down by two points in the last poll. The dnc has been putting millions of dollars in each state party, because it does help the infrastructure. But youre right, listen, the tester seat, the senate hangs on that for democrats. A lot of the wealthy folks that you are talking about have moved to the state during covid, so they are constituents, and have a very specific stake in this but tying it to the point from earlier, theres always backlash.
