The birth of the three Chacoan peccaries is significant because they’re on the endangered species list as a result of overhunting and habitat fragmentation, Sisk said. A pig-like animal, the peccaries are natives of Argentina, Bolivia and Paraguay.
Sisk said it’s too early to tell the gender of the babies, but they likely will be split up eventually to help other zoos that are also working to expand the population of the endangered species. It is the third time that peccary babies have been born at the zoo.
The zoo has had numerous other successes through the years breeding both endangered and non-endangered animals — including a flamingo and peccaries last year, Sichuan takins in 2019 and many more through the years.
